I went back two months later and was disappointed. What was different, the exterior and interior were the same. The menu was the same. But the waitress was younger than the one I remembered from before. I wished to order the same lunch special as before because it was so good. The waitress said too late, lunch special ended seven minutes ago. REALLY?!! What are they doing for three hours until the dinner menu becomes active and prices increase. Quite positive I was served the same lunch food that others were having for the last three hours but not as fresh. Here's an idea, maybe lower the menu prices between lunch and dinner. Call it Happy Hour as you serve food that has been kept hot for hours. Chan's has the best Chinese food! I have had Chinese food over the years . It was pretty good. But this food is outstanding ! Their lunch is incredible! Very big portions! For lunch . I have never had better Vegetable Lo Mein noodles ! The vegetables are perfectly done. The rice is amazing . Everything comes out steaming hot! Two cream cheese crab puffs and Hot tea! Their prices are great! The waitress is so kind and friendly! Don't pass this place by . I'm so glad my son insisted that it was amazing and I had to try it! The dinners are huge! Frist off I post a lot on Yelp. I feel I do a honest job is rating a restaurant. The food at Chan's is tasty and fresh. The Chop Suey is excellent and rice better than average. Was not a fan of the egg Foo Young, but that's my taste. The service was ok with one of the I assume daughters waiting on the tables. The biggest two issues I have with this restaurant are, I was asked if I wanted more Iced Tea which of course I did I found out later I was charged for a refill. I've never been charged for a refill but can understand it but the issue was I was never told. The other issue was when I asked for the Sweet and Sour sauce to be on the side, I was charged an extra 25 cents to do so. Yeah, I know it's only 25 cents but why. We actually had the gravy with the Egg Foo Young on the side so that's an extra 50 cent. Again, yes, it's only 50 cents but why. Was it for the extra dish they had to wash or what? Honestly, no one has to go out to dinner so it's the little things that make you go back but also the little things that make you not go back. Will never go back to this restaurant. read more

Unfortunately this place is not very good. My partner is chinese chinese and normally they will adjust the americanized version to make it authentic. We requested such like less to no sugar and for the dishes we ordered (sichuan beef and hunan chicken) and to be very very very spicy(as would align with the authentic version for both items). Like we emphasized the spicy part very heavily. With this we got the family deal so it came with other americanized items and then char sui pork. For the soup we tried to get the hot and sour but they only had the egg flower soup. I also bought some chili oil to have with the food. The two entrees came with a very good amount of meat which was good, but even with the adjustments it still wasnt that spicy at all and the sauce was still very sweet. If this is the non americanized version then I assume the americanized is crazy sweet and basically spiceless which is not great even for the americanized taste quality. Regardless it was fresh made. The egg flower soup, I wouldn't know if it was authentic or not as I basically don't normally get it, but the thickness was nice and I liked the black pepper they put in it. It felt pretty fresh as well. Regarding the appetizers from a just americanized version review, the fried shrimp was fun to eat, the egg rolls could have used more filling, the cheesy crab thing didn't have much of the crab but I actually prefer that- I enjoyed it. The char sui though was just straight up dry and terrible, my guess is they used the wrong cut of meat and did something odd about the flavor. All fried items were very fresh as well. The chili oil though, that is what straight up disappointed me. It literally had so little chili that it wasn't red... It was the color of plain oil itself. Real even basic homemade chili oil isnt red from dyes, it is red from the chilis. It had a tiny spicy but I still wouldn't call it chili oil. The chili oil by itself is what made my rating a two, otherwise I would have given a three. The ambiance was nice, I liked the traditional decor. Service was also quite good even for take out. The daughter was very kind and hardworking. I know the locals are happy with how crazy americanized this was, but given the level of tourists I would expect for a coast town I hope they reflect on the flavors and things I mentioned above. People are becoming more open and enjoying of closer to authentic food and the locals I would hope might at less appreciate less sugar. read more

Well, this place was recommended to us as it's been around for 40 years so we were excited to try it - should have known by the lack of either cars in the parking lot or people in the restaurant on a Friday night that we were going to a dive of a place. We ordered and the soup was delicious. Had high hopes but it Went downhill from there. One ordered lo main- pretty good, three ordered speciality dishes- sweet and sour chicken, shrimp and lemon chicken for the other two. All the chicken were same blobs of chicken in batter with very bland sauces. Mine was served Luke warm. Pretty disappointed. What was worse was service- the server came over and put to go boxes on the table (like I was taking that crap home) and never came back to see if we needed anything else. And there was no one else in the entire restaurant. Maybe it's time to retire- your food demonstrates your interest in serving your community- not interested at all. read more

So it was between Chan's and the Rice Bowl so i decided on Chan's because the Rice Bowl reviews of people repeatedly getting food poisoning seriously sooo many reviews about it I definitely wasn't going there so i ordered from Chan's and i am gonna be totally Honest get your bootay in the car and go there NOWWW! It was OMGGG WOW FACTOR SO DELICIOUS AND HUGE PORTIONS AND GREAT LUNCH SPECIALS . like the best Chinese food i think i have ever eaten i got the lunch special You get 2 choices so i got Mar Far chicken and Vegetable chow mien straight up nom nom. There is 2 things i didn't like about the to go order they threw my Mar Far which is fried crispy on top of my juicy saucy chow mien which yup you guessed it some pieces got soggy and i like texture so they get zero stars for that bad decision but luckily i live around the corner so i was able to save more then not . And one more thing when i am paying $13.50 I thought it was Cheap of them to try and charge me a $1 for a tiny package of hot sauce .for that much money i would expect for them to throw it in for Free. Here's the optimal strat for ordering. Family Style Dinner is $18.50 per person but gets you the whole chosen dish (which average $14) plus soup, appetizers, and fried rice. INSANE OG CHAN'S VALUE. I know that some people lived through the Covid Era of Chan's where stuff was not as good as it used to be, but Chan's is back on the map as the big location in Brookings in both food and value. Mongolian Beef in the special order is my go-to, but it used to be the Wor Won Ton Soup when I was younger. Not a huge fan of the fried shrimp, but the egg flower/hot and sour soups are on par and the pork fried rice goes harder than it should. If you order the family style you will probably have leftovers, so go with one of the other options if that is undesired. However, some of the more exciting dishes are only available on the higher priced dinner combos! read more

Went here for dinner on a Thursday after not having been there for over two years. The food was hot, had good flavor and the portions were ample. I was pleasantly impressed after avoiding it for so long because of negative feedback. My only real complaint would be that the waitress was wearing sweat pants, which I think is inappropriate attire for a server. read more

Been a couple years since I visited Chan's. The was this time was down right awful. Usually almond fried chicken is a breast sliced with gravy and almond slices. This time it was cut up weird pieces of light and dark meat, very tough to chew, gravy on top tasted tainted, and not a almond in sight. Fried rice tasted burnt, chicken chow mein was the only redeeming factor after I picked out the tough weird grisly pieces of chicken. We went to Chans for a nice evening out. The staff was helpful. Our food came and it was not the same as it usually was. The flavor was strange and the chicken was dry and stringy. The soup was so slimy it would not stay on the spoon. After a few bites we were not feeling well. We went to the front desk and kindly explained the the food didnt taste right. We couldn't eat it. The food was all still clearly on the table. They forced us to pay for it anyway and charged 5.00 extra to use a card. The customer is not respected nor do they have any desire to make it right. It was offensive and unproffessional. I can no longer endorse chans. 1 of us is already throwing up. Health department will be notified. read more

When I drove up to Chan's and saw a small little building I was wondering where the people from the 27 cars in the parking lot were. The interior is much larger than the facade and the place was packed. I was greeted immediately upon entering with a "welcome back" friendliness even though this was my first time here. I ordered the Friday special to go, General Tso's chicken with fried rice. It didn't end there, then I was told it also included BBQ pork and another choice of entree, I opted for sweet and sour chicken. Both chicken dishes were very good, the rice was average and the BBQ pork a little bland. All in all I would give the food 3 - 3.5 stars, but the shear quantity, price ($8.95, that's right $8.95 for all of that) and wervice pushed this one into a four star experience. I ordered here once so far. The 3 entrees were excellent, beef broccoli, shrimp with vegetables and Happy Family, flavor and freshness a plus. Fried rice was very good. Portions were large. The Rangoons were full of cheese, crunchy, but not much crab. Hot n Sour & Eggdrop soups were both very good. We had total of 4 eggrolls, vegetables were mush on the inside, but were crunchy outside, but we couldn't eat them. They serve these slices of BBQ pork but it was a bit dry and out of place in the meals. Our take out order was $75, including 10 pc Fried Wontons. it pricey but bought for 3 people which made 6 meals, basically because all 3 of us could only eat about half of the food night we got he food, and it made another 3 meals the next day. That's a pretty good haul when the food is decent. We have very few asian/chinese choices in our area and gal to find this place. They have a pretty big menu and makes me wonder how a place can do so many recipes very well, maybe we lucked out. I hope the egg roll insides aren't always overcooked. Reviews here are worse than I thought they would be.. I will definitely eat here again, just hope the egg rolls are better next time. read more

Someone said it before but I will reiterate it. The food is five star. The staff is five star. They will make anything you want and exactly to you your request. The decor is barely a two star... but I'm not going into a restaurant to chew on the chairs. I have travelled to Beijing and Shanghai and Xian... and I prefer Chan's to the cuisine I was served in China.
