Went there last night and I am so sorry. Among other items I ordered I got chow mien and it was the worst chow mien I have ever had. Also ordered something called pork fu young. Certainly no pork in it and I threw it away. It was awful. Also ordered sweet and sour pork which I judge all Chinese restaurants by, not good and the sauce was in a separate bag which I did not notice until most of the pork was gone. What a waste! Who is Chan? We went there tonight for dinner. The place was 3/4 packed with a constant flow of take out orders. I had the No.1 Combo plate which included Hot and Sour soup, pork fried rice, chicken chow mein(with the crunchy noodles) and pork egg foo young. The wait staff was friendly and accommodating, Jenny our server asked a customer to move their car so I could get my car out. But..... the Chinese food lacked on so many levels. Maybe it was just what I ordered..... maybe it is the fact that I have eaten Chinese food around the world in London, San Francisco, Honolulu, and Hong Kong that I have just been spoiled with the real deal. You know what? This place is awesome!! The owner is sweeter than sugar, but a little sly with her sense of humor too. The food portions are large (too large!!) and very flavorful. Be very clear about how spicy you want things, because my dish was rather spicy while my cousin's was rather not, even though he asked for about the same level. Chans is consistently delicious! It is much better than any other chinese places in our area. Although I wish the restaurant was be updated, better bathrooms, etc, I still won't stop going there! Staff is always friendly, prices are great, and huge portions! No better way to feed a large family! Most meals come with hot tea and egg flower or hot sour soup. My favorites are the chicken chow mein, pork friend rice, sweet & sour pork, mar far chicken, shrimp, and lemon chicken. Our picky children also love their food, that says a lot! The food in 5 star, the atmosphere is 2 star, the staff is 4-5 star the consistency is 5 star! Don't go to the China Hut in Crescent Cit! Bleck! I came here with my family on a vacation and stopped by for some dinner. My parents and I are picky eaters especially finding the best places to each in the harbor area. Coming from Portland, I know what's the best and the worst places to eat. All I can say is, this Chinese restaurant can do way better than some of the Chinese restaurants in Portland. NO JOKE!!! We ordered their chicken fried rice, crab puffs and several other dishes. Portion size were huge, which is an absolute plus. Services was quick, which is how it's suppose to be. My family goes to Chan's regularly. We live 30 minutes away and make the drive when we feel like going out. Food is always fresh and tasty. The prices are great also. Everything is good but my favorite is the sweet and sour pork. The sauce is put on at the last second so the breading doesn't have a chance to get soggy like other places do. I have never had a bad meal there. The waitresses are always very friendly so that makes the dining experience even better. I would say the only bad thing about this place is they need an update on their decor. But that won't stop me from going there! By far my favorite restaurant when I want some comfort food. read more

So I am a firm believer in eating what you order or at least sucking it up especially when trying new restaurants. That's how you find what is good and what's not. Today I returned some food. I ate here once a year or so ago and it was decent but the service sucked. Today the service was awesome but the food was terrible. I didn't return the whole meal although it all was crappy. I did however return the very chemically tasting honey walnut shrimp. It seriously tasted like melted plastic. The ladies were awesome though and I super appreciate that. I am kind of bummed. Revisited Chan's after being away for some time because I heard there was a recent change. The Kung pao chicken lunch special was flavorful and cooked well. The chicken was very tender and the vegetables were cooked just right with the right amount of crunch, and topped with a ton of cashews!! The fried rice was also delicious. I'm happy for the visit. I have gone to this restaurant for many years . Good food for great price. It's always consistent even after changing ownership. I have allergies and would get my food steamed but lately this was not working. We stopped in Chan's while visiting Brookings. My husband and I were very pleased with the food. Everything had a "clean, fresh" taste. Even the deep fried food were wonderful. I mentioned it to the waitress, and she told me it's because they change the cooking oil quite often. He doesn't use the same oil over and over like some places. There was only one waitress waiting tables, handling the cash register, the phone, and take out orders during the lunch rush, but she did real well. Not impressed in three significant ways: First they screwed up our phone order. My assistant coach and I ordered two of the same thing and it was definitely "General Tso's" I heard her say on the phone not the Sweet & Sour that we got. Second, it wasn't good. The fried rice was blah, the fried prawns too much batter, and the Sweet & Sour was runny and not very tasty (if it had been good I would totally forgiven the order being wrong). The food was decent but the service was horrible. We ordered takeout. The person taking the order was clearly exasperated by her duties "I don't know what I'm doing" were her words. But I am certain she's been there for a while. When we got home, there were ants on several of the containers. We'd already started eating as I said the food was decent. So we called to tell them about the ants. The same lady said, very rudely, "I've got a lot of orders in front of me. There aren't ants on any of them." We would not have called if it were not true. chan's hubby and i stopped for dinner at chan's because of the high ratings on the web. the hot and sour soup raised our hopes for the meal to come, since it was not bad at all. :) however, neither of us could understand what all the hype is about. we found the meals to be tasteless and simply awful. my garlic beef, had absolutely no flavor of garlic in it. the sauce over my beef tasted very much the same as the sauce on hubby's mongolian beef plate. the mongolian beef dish was unlike any i had ever seen or tasted. it had not snow peas, but green peas in it. there was so much sauce smothering the beef, mushrooms, onions, and water chestnuts. there was an overabundance of miniature corn pieces. it was impossible to eat from the plate without the sauce running over the edge of the dish. to me, across the table, it looked like slop on a plate. this sauce was also tasteless. pieces of beef were not cut into bite-size pieces - there was one huge piece which should have been 4 smaller pieces, but was all still connected together. yuck! read more

I Went vegan a year ago and it's super hard sometimes to find any vegan options In such a little town but they have a vegan list on their menu and always substitute things when need be! We had a family reunion here in Brookings this past weekend. On Friday night we wanted to go out to eat and wound up at Chan's. I initially thought there would only be about 12 of us and didn't bother to call the restaurant. The wait staff started lining up tables, chairs and setups for the group when suddenly we grew to 20 people! The gals did a TREMENDOUS job of accommodating our group with lots of smiles and no negative attitudes. We had babies and children ranging in age from 15 months up to 10 (complete with normal behavior) and there wasn't any issue with this. The food was great and the service was outstanding. We went here while vacationing in the redwoods and were blown away. The food is amazing and the portions are big. Got the impression it's a family business (on our second visit we were seated by a very polite young man of about ten or eleven). Very fast and accommodating. Wife was feeling sick so got lunch to go. It was super fast (I've waited longer at fast food places) and the were very accommodating. My son wanted spice pan fried noodles with out vegetables and they did it no problem. Wife had Mar far chicken and loved it. Large pieces of breast meet. I had the sweet and sour pork it was good. I got broccoli & beef, pork rice, pork, tempura shrimp combo. The beef was squishy, like it had been sitting in sauce all day. The broccoli was over steamed. The pork rice was good but the pork was dry. The shrimp was good. We also got spicy tofu and veggies. The veggies were mostly celery and carrots. The tofu wasn't that great. This is the BEST Chinese food I have eaten on the West Coast. I came in with my family and we ordered a family style dinner, there was a lot of food. The vegetables were very fresh and every dish was very tasty. I enjoyed the general tso's chicken, enormous egg rolls, and the Hong Kong style pan fried noodles was a amazing. Our favorite Chinese take out place! We have Chanda probably 2-3 times a month. Highly recommend the Chans take out special. You get a small variety of foods and it always tastes great. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 star is the parking is pretty bad, and eating in restaurant you'll have 50/50 chance of good service depending on who is working that night. read more

Having eaten there before with no problem, everything changed. Ordered sweet/sour chicken, pork and shrimp to go and drove off. Opening the box, there was nothing BUT dry, stale shrimp, dry, tough pork and inedible gristly something called chicken. Even my dog wouldn't eat it!!! Everything appeared to be microwaved and was served in 5 minutes flat! Rather get canned Chinese than that tasteless, warmed over mess with no noodles, rice or anything on the side.
