The staff is quick, friendly, and knowledgeable. We go about 3 times a year. I went yesterday and the guy remembered me and what I had last time and suggested something just slightly different this time. He nailed it! Whole experience felt incredibly disrespectful. I called at 215 to check if they were indeed open and ask if we needed a reservation. I told them we'd be there at 2:30. We were indeed there by 2:30, but we were not greeted. Not a single person said hello, or smiled, or welcomed us in any way. Instead we were informed that they were closing at 3. No one gave us a menu, I found one myself so that I could be ready to order when the waiter came by to take it, begrudgingly. First time here based on our local relative's recommendation. We picked up our order of noodles, tofu & veggies, fried rice, and mango dessert to go. We are from the Bay Area and like spicy food, so asked the helpful staff how high we should go on the 0-5 scale (she said 2 is medium spice) , so tried level 3 for the tofu & veggies and level 4 for the noodles. Both dishes were enjoyable spicy, but not overpoweringly so. We don't think we need to try level 5 spicy next time, as it would be too much. This is by far my favorite restaurant in Brookings. I always get the golden fried rice with beef and it's so so delicious. The peanut sauce onto the rice is just straight fire. The service and cooking time is super fast you'll never even realize you just put down the menu. I sit by the window to look out at the view every-time and I enjoy this place even more than the first. Please give Khun tai some love. read more

Middle of the day, time to go shopping at Freddy's. Where can I have lunch that's so nearby that I can walk to in my flip flop's that is not fast food. Ah, a Thai restaurant. I love Thai food. Walking up the steps from the street below I see an open door. Inside looks like a dive bar. Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared at me. I left thinking I am not at the right place. I walked around the building, noticing at one time it has a drive thru. I almost make a full circle before finding the main entrance. Greeted by smiles, I placed my order. A little language barrier but that's okay, kinda adds to the ambiance. I sat at a very low table, barely enough room for my legs underneath while waiting for my food. My food was in a disposable box at the place where I ordered it. I don't think they would have brought it to me. When the person behind the counter and I made eye contact, she said here is your food. When I returned to my table with the box, I noticed the chicken and rice had no peanut sauce. I took the box back up to the counter. The staff was apologetic while scooping warm sauce from crock pot behind them. So yummy with the sauce. Not so much without the sauce on the grilled chicken lemongrass I ordered. I ordered number three for heat. That felt about right. Overall not too impressed with the thin chicken slices and being treated like a to go customer. Now I notice another Thai restaurant in town with a very UN Thai name for me to check out next and compare. read more

The best green curry I've ever Had!!! the flavor is so robust yet lite and creamy makes you keep going back for Spoonful after spoonful! I was not able to see the inside of this restaurant so this is purely based on takeout. I got the yellow curry and chicken pad thai. I was quite unimpressed. This might have been the most bland Thai food I've ever had. It lacked in flavor and color. For such positive reviews I was genuinely surprised to not enjoy my room to such an extent. We tossed the curry, not saving any left overs as people who refuse to waste food. It was similar quality to a tv dinner at least in flavor. Would definitely recommend. We were staying at Harris Beach Campground for the night and wanted something to bring back and eat at the camp. We got an order of the drunken noodles and chicken teriyaki to go. The amount of food per order was enough for 2 meals and quality was top notch. Much better than expected for the very reasonable prices (especially in todays food service industry). Got both at a level 3 spice and it was perfect if you like spice but don't want fire. 9 years since our last meal here ... and it's STILL a 5* from me. This time, my husband and I had 3 meals here in the span of a week. Twice I had the Red Curry (veggies being my add-in of choice, which adds Carrots, Broccoli, and Cabbage to the usual ingredients). They allowed substituting Jasmine rice with Brown rice for $1 more, so I happily did that. Spice level choices were 0-5; I chose 5, and it was about right (a bit weak for my heat tolerance, but enough to enjoy). It has a decent amount of veggies, but too much curry for me to eat all of it. I enjoyed it both times. My husband had a Rainbow Wok Fry with veggies for one meal. He enjoyed the taste; he thought it was a garlic-based sauce. He chose a spice level of 4, which gave some heat without making him feel like his mouth was on fire by the time he finished. Portion size was very good for the price. Another time he had the Garlic Prawns & Peanut Sauce, which came with eight! prawns (quite generous these days) and steamed veggies (most noticeably broccoli, but also mushrooms, onions, cilantro, and at least one other). The garlic sauce itself was delicious, but the side of peanut sauce was really great. Not sickly sweet like at many Thai restaurants, it added another dimension to the flavor profile of the dish. Very enjoyable (yeah, I did eat some of it, so what?). We also each had a Papaya salad once. Admittedly we don't order this very often in Thai restaurants, but all the other times we've had it, the papaya and other ingredients were on a bed of lettuce. Not here. The lettuce comes separately, so it doesn't get soggy, and can even be used to make a few wraps if you feel like it. The fish sauce / lime dressing was delicious. Another winner in my book. The Fresh Summer Rolls with tofu tasted fresh described, and were very well wrapped. They came with the same delicious peanut sauce as described above. Service ranged from fast when very crowded, to ridiculously fast when nearly empty; once, our meals were delivered to our table in less than 5 minutes of us ordering. All servers were very pleasant, but one in particular stood out. Five days after our first meal here, when we came for our second meal, he remembered me, and that I prefer hot water instead of ice water. He brought it without me saying a word! That's a crazy good memory, and fantastic service. Considering service, pricing, and food, it remains a solid 5* for me. read more

A nice surprise to find this restaurant within a few minutes of our accommodation. I'm Asian and I thought the food was pretty authentic. Our family ordered the basil pork with fried egg, Massaman curry, grilled lemongrass chicken and Thai iced teas. Everything was fantastic. The food at Khun Thai has fueled a lot of late nights working. Their take out is amazing. I also eat in the restaurant every few visits and the atmosphere is very kind and friendly. The chicken yellow curry is my favorite, along with the crispy basil chicken. I would also recommend the chicken satay and shrimp summer rolls as appetizers (or a meal!). I will also say this- they spell my name right every time when I get take out (I definitely go there too often) and some of my coworkers can't even spell my name right so I'm impressed. read more

One unhappy customer due to the waiter Albert being rude and arguing with me making me feel like a piece of crap. The food is excellent when John is cooking. I have been coming here for years. I usually enjoy my time. I had a bad experience with the waiter Albert. I went in with my 2 friends and ordered my mom and I are both allergic to eggs, so I said no eggs. And the waiters usually repeat what you order so they get it right. He did not so I thought oh he is good and going to get it right. They brought out the food with eggs and when I sent it back Albert argued with me saying I was wrong. That he didn't write it down. So he adamantly said you are in the wrong. So his mistake was my fault. I have worked in the restaurant business before and the customer is always right. And when this happened the waiter or waitress was always fired. So after Albert made me feel like a piece of crap. i lost my appetite and he was all laughing and giving me attitude and weird looks. I talked to another waitress and said what he did was completely unexceptable. She said she would talk to the owner Pete and let him know how rude Albert the waiter was to a customer that brings lots of people into this restaurant. Now it makes me feel like I want to tell all my friends to not come back. I personally think that Albert doesn't like his job. First off, so kind staff! (We were traveling with two dogs, and the staff helped us refill our water and offered to carry things to the car. )Secondly, really, really giant portions. Delicious Thai food - don't even need to discount for the location (small town vs big city). We got take out here and ate it at Harris Beach state park. Got one red curry, one pad see ew, and one spring roll. Each was excellent. Curry was the winner given the rich broth and excellent flavor without being too heavy. It was my first visit to Khun Thai. I am not a fan of spicy food. I've never tried Thai food before. Therefore, I would not have gone if my friend hadn't insisted on going there as she knew a fellow who was playing music that night. My first impression when walking in the front door was how astoundingly clean and neat everything was! I've never walked into a restaurant and instantly noticed the cleanliness of the place. We continued to the cocktail lounge area and again I was delighted with the surroundings. When the waitress took our order, she explained that we could advise the level of "spiciness" that we wanted or without any hot spice at all. We both passed on the "heat". I ordered the coconut butterfly shrimp. My friend chose the curry chicken. With my first bite of the shrimp, I declared to my friend that it was the best coconut shrimp I had ever tasted, done to perfection to retain the taste without compromising on the tenderness. My friend offered me a test of the curry chicken which was in a creamy yellow soup type of base. I accepted her offer with hesitation, and was once again delighted with a wonderful flavor that I knew I might order for myself at some future visit. The service was excellent.
