Our first time staying at Brookings Oregon and our first night we ordered in from Catalyst seafood. Let me just say- I wish I took photos because the food we ordered was DELICIOUS! Hubby ordered fish and chips and popcorn shrimp. I ordered the breadbowl. Hubby said his food was amazing. My chowder in the breadbowl was also delicious. The bread was toasted just right- the potatoes inside the chowder were diced so it felt they kinda melted in your mouth. The clams were really delicious too! Service is hard for me to gauge but honestly I think it's pretty good since they packed everything with care! First time here. Did not have a good experience and emailed the owner twice but never got a reply. No reason to return if the owner can't provide reliable customer service which is identical to what we experienced with our server. Party of three and went in to celebrate a birthday. We ordered: 1 oyster shooter, 1 crispy oyster appetizer, 1 patty melt, 1 cheeseburger basket, and 1 fish & chips. She walked away and we had to call her back to order drinks. The oyster shooter came out quickly. It was huge! We also saw another guest with a whole crab. We then realized that there was a seasonal crab menu. Our server never told us about the special menu. I would have easily ordered the whole crab or seafood tower (I forget what it's called but it had scallops, crab, sirloin, etc.). Our meals came out, patty melt, cheeseburger, fish and chips, and crispy oyster appetizer. Wait...what? Why didn't the crispy oyster come out with the shooter? Oh...because our server gave us a meal instead of the appetizer since it had a pile of French fries with it and we were charged for it! Overall, the meals were good. Our daughter enjoyed her patty melt. My crispy oysters and fish and chips were OK, nothing to write home about. Also, the server did not ask how I wanted my fish and chips since the menu offers them deep fried or grilled. They came deep fried. Either way is fine with me but if there is an option, the server should know that and ask. After our meals, we ordered two slices of brown butter cake and instead were served two pieces of mile high chocolate cake. At this point, it was useless to complain to the unattentive server. The lady that first had to go to the front for something else may not have seemed the friendliest but our server was really nice and prompt. We'd been driving for several hours and had many more to go when we stopped nearby for gas and to take a break in general. I figured we were near the beach and wanted to get some seafood. After looking at a few places I came back to this one because the menu looked good. It's not the newest but it's a nice restaurant, plenty of seating. The prices and portions are good. The chowder was nice and thick with a good flavor. We did go for fried foods which were kind of greasy, but also really golden and delicious. We enjoyed what we could before getting back on the road, and we enjoyed the rest later from the air fryer. Glad we stopped in here. Friendly service and solid food. read more

Most delicious, fresh caught seafood. Rockfish and Dungeness crab are in season and that's what we ordered up. I recommend the crab tacos with salsa because they are so delicious. The grilled rock fish was a little crunchy on the outside, very scrumptious, and moist inside with mashed potatoes and butter floating in the middle madhec hole. I'm talking Yum Yum! Unfortunately, the service made the meal feel rushed and uncomfortable. Our server was very short with us. When she brought my soup, it had spilled over, and she quickly set it across the table and walked away. I also ordered a meal to go, and just as I had started eating, she placed the bag and check in the middle of our small table. It felt like we were being pushed to leave rather than allowed to enjoy our meal. I hope the restaurant provides better, more considerate service in the future. read more

I've been eating at the Catalyst ever since they opened. This past July the food was different than other times before and not very good. Had the clam chowder "loaded" bread bowl last evening. In the past, it has been some of the best clam chowder I've ever had. Yesterday evening, not so much. It was terrible. It was more like potato stew with dough consistency. Maybe three breaded clam strips and a quarter cup of baby shrimp. It was loaded with potatoes! I was very disappointed. Definitely not worth $22! Sadly this place has gone downhill mightily in the last year. They only have rockfish and not lingcod anymore. They never have halibut it seems which was always the best. The batter now is more of a cornmeal and not the great batter they once had. It's consistently not good. The shrimp melt was just a dry sandwich with hard cheese and bay shrimp only on toast and painfully gross. Clam chowder is usually good but overall, very subpar food lately. Pull it together Catalyst and get the great fish and chips back that you once had, Brookings needs it. read more

We were told it would be 25 minutes to be seated and we decided to wait since the reviews were glowing. We weren't seated until 45 minutes later. If we knew it would have taken that long, we would have just gone somewhere else. Finally, we were seated at a table next to a large party. We felt pretty neglected by our server the whole evening because she was busy taking care of them. It was hard to get anyone's attention to order and get drink refills. The Fish and Chips were not very crispy, but the dish was delicious and fresh. The fries were absolutely mouthwatering. We also tried the Popcorn Shrimp and really liked it. Fresh fish every afternoon brought off the boats, Rock fish. What you're eating tonight was swimming this morning in the ocean!I I ordered the fish and chips and yes, the fish is going to be Rock Fish, but they had a grilled option. I could also substitute the french fries for their clam chowder for $3. Sold. I never had Rock Fish, but it's a very mild fish and they had an excellent seasoning used when grilling. It was moist, it was tasty, and the seasoning, just a slight kick to it that was perfect. In addition, they gave me plenty of it! The cup of clam chowder was absolutely delicious. The best I've ever had, this includes my trips to florida, maine, san francisco, ireland, san diego and we live just north of malibu. Hands down get this clam chowder. For small fee, they'll also put fresh shrimp on top of it. I wish I would have done that too. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures, because I was too hungry and I ate it all up too fast! I had a very cold kendall jackson chardonnay for 9 dollars to wash it down with. Now, mind you, this is a family restaurant, basic old decor and really no ambiance; I would give it 2 stars in those categories. That said you don't come here for that, you come here to get absolutely great food at a very good price and the service, rather average, but she tried all the time with a smile. I give Catalyst an "ok" if you know to expect. Admittedly, we didn't check the menu prior to eating here. The restaurant is busy for lunch on a balmy Sunday afternoon. Catalyst's menu consists almost entirely of fried food. Starting with the wine by the glass, I noticed the pour is on the light side. The chowder is hot and flavorful but doesn't contain much clam. The calamari is greasy and contains mostly tentacles compared to rings. I was disappointed in this, expecting more from a local seafood place that boasts local, fresh fish. The rockfish is the best thing we ordered! Perfectly cooked, it comes with veggies (squash, zucchini and a pepper or two) and mashed potatoes with the skins! We passed on dessert. read more

I had fried clams, was told by server were fresh (as in not frozen) but we doubt this was true based on texture and flavor. Excellent tartar sauce! But at $75 w/water and one non-alcoholic drink, no dessert or sides, definitely not worth it. Only fair service, with no mention of specials, advice or interaction from server. Many good reviews on Yelp, but at these prices I am hesitant eat here again, until we check out the competing restaurants first. read more

I came here specifically for the clam chowder, It's supposed to be good and it is! This is a really cool spot also, with a great atmosphere for it's location, it really fits in well. The only plus I'd give this place is the price. I got the grilled rockfish and salad for $22, my brother got the rockfish dinner for $25. We also had popcorn shrimp for $11. Our food was okay. I was excited to find this place with a decent price. I was even more excited when the place was packed. I thought that would mean good things. It didn't. I'll go back but hope they take the clams of their menu until they get a MUCH better delivery of Clams. There is, at first, decent music playing in the dining area, but there was loud heavy metal music playing from the kitchen. It sounded like a train wreck. Food came out faster than I could think of something to talk about, and the meal was delicious. I normally don't eat a whole clam chowder bread bowl, but I did in its entirety. It's a shame I don't have one of these places where I live; they also have these good mini cakes that are peak. Our server was quick to take a drink order and brought our beer. I asked her about the fish and chips fish and she advised it was rock fish. I asked if it was more like cod or halibut as those are the ones we have seen around here. She looked irritated and said she couldn't say. The fish was good but very greasy. I had to pull the coating off to eat it. But the fries were seasoned with something akin to crack. I couldn't stop eating them. The calamari was a good portion but didn't thrill either of us.
