Most delicious, fresh caught seafood. Rockfish and Dungeness crab are in season and that's what we ordered up. I recommend the crab tacos with salsa because they are so delicious. The grilled rock fish was a little crunchy on the outside, very scrumptious, and moist inside with mashed potatoes and butter floating in the middle madhec hole. I'm talking Yum Yum! Fresh fish every afternoon brought off the boats, Rock fish. What you're eating tonight was swimming this morning in the ocean!I I ordered the fish and chips and yes, the fish is going to be Rock Fish, but they had a grilled option. I could also substitute the french fries for their clam chowder for $3. Sold. I never had Rock Fish, but it's a very mild fish and they had an excellent seasoning used when grilling. It was moist, it was tasty, and the seasoning, just a slight kick to it that was perfect. In addition, they gave me plenty of it! The cup of clam chowder was absolutely delicious. The best I've ever had, this includes my trips to florida, maine, san francisco, ireland, san diego and we live just north of malibu. Hands down get this clam chowder. For small fee, they'll also put fresh shrimp on top of it. I wish I would have done that too. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures, because I was too hungry and I ate it all up too fast! I had a very cold kendall jackson chardonnay for 9 dollars to wash it down with. Now, mind you, this is a family restaurant, basic old decor and really no ambiance; I would give it 2 stars in those categories. That said you don't come here for that, you come here to get absolutely great food at a very good price and the service, rather average, but she tried all the time with a smile. Easy parking. Very friendly and quick service. We had the clam chowder in a sourdough bowl topped with crab and the crab French roll. Both delicious. I came here specifically for the clam chowder, It's supposed to be good and it is! This is a really cool spot also, with a great atmosphere for it's location, it really fits in well. When I was here, the service was also good, fast and efficient. I'd give the chowder a good 3.8/4. It's thick and it's got great ingredients and plenty of meat. read more

We were told it would be 25 minutes to be seated and we decided to wait since the reviews were glowing. We weren't seated until 45 minutes later. If we knew it would have taken that long, we would have just gone somewhere else. Finally, we were seated at a table next to a large party. We felt pretty neglected by our server the whole evening because she was busy taking care of them. It was hard to get anyone's attention to order and get drink refills. The food was delicious, the service was friendly and attentive. The ambiance left a lot to be desired. There is, at first, decent music playing in the dining area, but there was loud heavy metal music playing from the kitchen. It sounded like a train wreck. I told the waiter as such, and she laughed and asked if we wanted the dining room music turned off. We said no.. she said she would talk To the kitchen staff. She did. Several people from the kitchen came to look at us through the windows of the double doors. The dining music was then switched to heavy metal, but still not the same music that was playing in the kitchen. Still a train wreck. Apparently kitchen staff desire for loud music trumps customer experience. If you go, enjoy the food but maybe bring ear plugs. read more

Unfortunately this establishment is in decline.. When I arrived in Brookings 8 years ago Catalyst came highly recommended and justifiably so. Food was fresh, well prepared and the staff delightful. Not so much these days. The restaurant has suffered what all businesses have. Increasing prices and staffing issues. Help turnover being my main complaint. Some truly try to please, others are obviously stressed and a few just don't give a damn. Maybe owner management will correct this, maybe no. In the interim my suggestion would be SuperFly in town. This place was busy on a Thursday night but we only waited a few minutes to be seated. It's tight quarters inside but cute and not at all loud. Our server was quick to take a drink order and brought our beer. I asked her about the fish and chips fish and she advised it was rock fish. I asked if it was more like cod or halibut as those are the ones we have seen around here. She looked irritated and said she couldn't say. The fish was good but very greasy. They had a great deal of fried food here and I would have had their clam chowder but it had bacon in it. If you need to put bacon in clam chowder, to me it wasn't great to begin with. Wished for better seafoood options. I had high hopes. The clam chowder wasn't great, too much of the food is fried and the salad was just gross. I only went once, and doubt I'll be back unless the menu changes. It just astounds me that a seaside town doesn't have more healthy food options available. The only thing that would have made it better and I would have gave 5 stars was if they would have turned on the patio heaters...it was freezing and everyone on the patio kept making trips to their cars to add layers. Catalyst Seafood has been, is and will probably always be my place of choice while visiting Brookings/Smith River/Crescent City area for eating out. The loaded clam chowder bread bowl is superb and the fish and chips are next level! My children also love the Chicken tenders and fries of course. The seafood is always fresh being on the port and the service is wonderful as well. This visit I have been here two days and have already ate here twice. The establishment has wonderful outdoor seating for beautiful sunny days and the indoors can suit children pretty well too.
