I stopped by Mattie's Pancake House today 2/15/2026 while passing through, and honestly, it turned out to be one of those memorable roadside gems you're so glad you didn't miss. Wasn't impressed. I got the corned beef hash breakfast plate. I ordered my side of bacon well-done BUT they made the entire order overly well-done. I picked through it, but left 90% of it behind. The waitress was nice, and asked if I wanted a box. I said no, it's too over cooked, if I didn't know what I ordered I would have never guessed what was under all this charcoal. While she did agree and even said she noticed that when she brought it out, she chalked it up to a new cook. I didn't ask for a refund, and she didn't offer one. But in the end she did offer to send it back and make me a new one, but we were already paying our bill and ready to leave. Everyone in our group of 8 had finished eating too. It was just time to go. Mattie's was a bit of a confusing experience. First we were trying to figure out whether or not they were open. Google and Mattie's website both showed that they opened later in the day at 11:30 however yelp showered different hours. When we called to confirm, someone answered the phone and it was clear there were diners chatting in the background but they told us they were closed. Confused, we called back a few minutes later and were told they were open. We drove there and were sat immediately. Drink options pretty limited but their coffee was pretty good. The tables were very close together and when we told the server we needed a second to decide she came back less than a minute later and it felt like we were rushed. The food was good but not great. A couple of the sides came in correctly as well. I was hoping for more of a breakfast or brunch atmosphere but instead it felt a little more designed for people passing through town looking for a really quick breakfast bite. read more

I've been going to Mattie's for almost 20 years when I'm in the area. At one time it was great. Then got to be average. Today was not good. Omelet was eggs overcooked, cooked 1/8" thick then veggies wrapped in it. Charged $2. Extra for cheese on it. My toast was cooked so dry it was like eating a dry cracker. Fruit instead of potatoes was maybe 6 grapes and 4 pieces of pineapple. Since Blue Water Cafeclosed not many options I'll drive to Crescent city or Gold Beach next trip. read more

Huge servings! I wish I'd split with my husband. It's a little pricey for a diner, but the servings justify it. It's on the heavy side, lots of butter, anything with cheese has a lot of it, sausage is the real deal. The butter was delicious though, very freshly churned seeming. Everything tasted good, but I ordered over easy and got sunny side up eggs and the hash browns were a bit over done, so I took a star for that. In general, I highly recommend just order accordingly. If I went back I'd ask for light cheese and probably just have my eggs scrambled. I'd also split something if someone was willing. The pancakes were wonderful. I ate at this place on 9/18/25 when I was in town for business. I went based on reviews, and the fact that they were open early. GREAT choice! I had the eggs benedict, and a single pancake. Holy guacamole was that a lot of food! The hollandaise on the eggs was awesome, eggs done to perfection, and the red potatoes were crisp and tasty. Be warned, the pancake had the diameter of a basketball- it was huge! I think this breakfast could have fed two people! Coffee was great, service was friendly and attentive, and the food was superb. I give this 2 stars and that's only because I like vintage GM vehicles. This place is festooned with car art and model cars, which distracted me from the dining experience. If you like Dennys or a 2am Waffle House vibe, you'll feel right at home with the food and service. The server threw our food on the table, clearly upset. All I did was sit down with my wife and kids, we are nice, friendly people. No need to behave so rudely. Should have read the reviews before visiting this place. Seems as though the location has changed ownerships and service / food quality is not the same. We were seated on the booth facing the kitchen and so we watched as the kitchen placed the "ready" food on the counter for the waitresses. Was immediately turned off when I saw one of the waitresses pick off some onion rings from the plate she had just received from the kitchen. She placed it on a small dish she had to her side and proceeded to take that same plate to the corresponding table. When she returned, she ate the onion ring she had taken off. At this point I had already placed my order, a cheeseburger with fries. When my order was ready, I watched as the waitress grabbed my plate and removed a good amount of fries for herself (her back was turned to me, she must have thought I couldn't see). She handed me my plate and I watched as she proceeded to go back to the fries she had just taken and season them with something. She then stuffed some in her mouth before continuing to work. Not in a bad way but a room for improvement would be nice. Sometimes the food isn't made in a consistent way, sometimes pancakes are burnt at the bottom, potatoes are half cooked, eggs aren't served as how you requested; maybe depending on the person in charge of cooking, food comes out different each visit. But, still good nonetheless and the servings are easily shareable for a decent price. This place is always packed during the weekend, enjoyed by locals and travelers alike. We had to wait a half hour to get seated even though there were multiple open tables that needed cleared. This place is a hidden local gem. We only learned of it because of our niece's recommendation. We had to travel north out of Crescent City, CA on US-101 because US-199 was closed due to a wildfire. We arrived at about 8:00 AM to find the place "packed." There was one last table available and we got it. For the amount of people in the establishment we were pleasantly surprised at the speed of service. My coffee cup never got below half full. We had the Eggs Benedict which came a lot faster than I thought possible given the number of people inside. Mine was with the red potatoes while my wife got regular hash browns. She preferred my red potatoes as did I. The servers were definitely "hustling" but alway were pleasant and friendly. Bottom Line: GO, but be prepared to wait. You might end up being given a "beeper" to take to the parking lot for a while. The food and value make it worth the wait. read more
