My husband and I were relatively nearby camping at Jedidiah Redwoods State Park when we thought it'd be fun to drive into Oregon for a little bit. We didn't necessarily do much when we were in Brookings, Oregon, but we did stop by Compass Rose Cafe and it was one of the best steps yet. They are a smaller cafe so you can expect to wait for a table on the weekend. We originally opted for the food to go because we weren't sure if there would be a table available, but things worked out and we were able to eat here surrounded by all the whimsy knick knacks. I opted for the half size biscuits and gravy with an added patty on top and my husband opted for their monster burrito. Both entrees had great flavor and the staff was very hospitable and friendly. There is plenty of street parking and they also have a small parking lot available. Overall, Compass Rose Cafe is worth a stop if you're in the area and want to relax with some good food! read more

I am an over the top foody and I love the Compass Rose. They have excellent organic coffee and the artwork on their cappuccinos and lattes is beautiful. My favorite dish is the veggie burrito with no potatoes. I give them a five out of five except that recently they are serving sour cream and salsa from packets. Really? Great little breakfast and coffee spot. We chose this spot because they allowed dogs in the patio. Our pup was provided with water and scrambled eggs. Probably won't be going back. Tried again for the third time. Got the waffle, bacon, scrambled eggs. Waffle was warmer than previous visit. Bacon was still severely over cooked, almost as if it's pre-cooked in a mold and reheated. Also overheard one of the staff tell a customer that they ran out of waffles. Do you mean to tell me that they don't even make their own waffles? My guess is that because of the limited kitchen, a lot of food is prepared elsewhere. I really did give this place a chance after my first visit which was quite good. However, when I want a hearty homemade breakfast, this won't be the place to go. read more

The Plain Jane breakfast sandwich lists "scrambled eggs" as one of the components, but this egg was cooked in a mold most likely in the microwave, or maybe in an oven. A scrambled egg is a specific thing; it's prepared over low heat and pushed around resulting in fluffy curds. The egg in this sandwich was like an airy sponge and was very bland. I was impressed with the "we can make anything gluten-free" tag on their menu, as that hasn't been easy to find in Central OR, or the southern costal area...yet. I had a burrito bowl without the tortilla and I was impressed with the quantity of crispy bacon bits, cheese and flavor...I didn't even need salsa. Why a tortilla-less burrito bowl had never occurred to me as a possibility in a restaurant before, I dunno! There was seating indoors as well as outdoors (shaded in the late morning hours). We were promptly greeted and instructed to order at the counter after we decided on our meals. The space itself is wonderfully decorated with unique and fun artwork. It definitely kept us busy with delight. I loved the scenic views playing on their tv as well. Our order was served pretty quickly. Specialty drinks were delicious. Each of us thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast meals. Very clean restaurant throughout. Great use of space, including single person bathroom. We look forward to returning the next time we're in town! I will preface this with I am picky. Might be a great spot lots of locals just do not go on Monday. It's their Friday and they didn't have anything I wanted to try off their website, OJ or hemp milk for a latte. As I said I am Particular. I had the biscuits and sausage gravy and it is to die for...I thought my late wife made the best sausage gravy i ever tasted, but this cafe makes it just the way i like it. We got there and ordered our food at about 12:05 pm and did not get our food until about 1:10 pm. We actually had to go up and ask about our food because people who had gotten there after us were getting and even finishing their food. When our sandwiches and fruit bowl arrived they looked rushed and neither had any condiments. For reference I got the plain Jane, and my mom got a blt. My mom asked for mayo on hers because it didn't have any as previously mentioned, and the waitress walked briefly to the back and said it's on it already. My family and I visited Brookings today and happened to be walking by this little shop when we saw the sign Metolious Chai outside, we are big fans of Metolius so we stopped in and my wife got a chai and I asked for the spiciest Mexican mocha they've ever made. Spicier than the core of Mount Vesuvius, spicier than the eye of a Cayenne tornado... and they delivered! This is my first time eating at compass rose cafe, I ordered through DoorDash and the food arrived piping hot. I got the biscuits and gravy with two over easy eggs and a sausage patty, with a hot chocolate, the gravy has a very healthy amount of pepper in it so there's no need to add pepper to it. What a sweet spot. We came for coffee and looked at the menu and ordered a breakfast burrito as well. The steady stream of customers were well taken care of by the happy staff. It's so refreshing to have happy kind helpful service when ordering at a new place. The ambiance was very clean and tended to. Our order was a to-go order so as we sat a waited we met the owner Natalie. She explained we have a large order in front of you and that our order will be out soon. Taking that time to make a connection with your customers goes a long way. We continued our chat and she shared this is a family run business and that they LOVE what they do and where they chose to lay down roots for the last several years. It was quite honestly some of the best yogurt I've ever had??? Not sure how or why. The london fog I got was also lovely and all the drinks are customizable.
