It was also ironic because by right by the register and their takeout menus there was a brochure for a carpet cleaning service ? I digress. I could also see in to the kitchen and I could see it was also unkept. I ignored these red flags and my urge to leave because again- we were starving and nothing else in town was open. I paid $60 (with tip) for "cashew chicken", beef & broccoli, spring rolls and shrimp fried rice. To say the least - it was inedible . It all got thrown away . The fried rice was mushy, it had no soy sauce, the spring rolls looked like .... Giant nuggets of something ? Idk they were salty but not good. The cashew chicken had more celery than chicken and it was also in some sort of gravy ? The beef and broccoli was also insanely Horrible. Clearly frozen broccoli and mush. It was so bad. Everything we ordered was heavily loaded with grease and thats the only thing you can taste. The owners are very amazing, good friendly people. I think they havent been out into the world and tasted fresh , food though. I know they have been in the community for years and years but, the food is horrible. They should take a walk across the street to the thai food truck and taste fresh take out , to compare it to theirs. They have lots of cheap lunch specials from 11:30-3, and senior (55+) combo plates for dinner that are very reasonable. The "fried" rice does not appear to be fried. Lo Mein very salty, probably because of the MSG (wish I had noticed that on the menu). Very pleasant owner. Says it will take 1/2 hour to cook, but only took 15 minutes. Restaurant always empty-looking because they are still not allowing dine-in. Not sure why, all the other restaurants in town do. Look, there are just not a lot of restaurants in Gold Beach and suppose you want to take a break from seafood. Well then, here ya go with Wong's Café! When we first arrived on a misty night we were the only customers. We immediately liked the clean interior (restrooms are spotless) and soft Chinese instrumental music playing. We also liked that you could order your dishes without MSG. However, when we requested eggrolls, our waitress was honest and straightforward and cautioned that the eggrolls did contain MSG and suggested we try something else. So for an appetizer, we got fried wonton. Nothing special about the wonton, but we did like the sweet sauce with pineapple bits that came with the dish. They have several combination plates and four family style combinations, in addition to individual dishes. We went with the shrimp lo mein and the chicken moo goo gai pan. Admittedly, I couldn't recall what moo goo gai pan was, so I ordered it because I liked the name. Though the shrimp lo mein was rather oily, it was delicious and I had to restrain myself from wolfing it down. The moo goo gai pan was not much to look at, but was pleasant tasting. In addition to the chicken, it contained broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, water chestnuts and baby corn. Service was outstanding. And when it came to water refills, our waitress's service was so devoted it was humorous. A couple times after I had taken a only a few sips from my refilled glass, our waitress turned around and immediately refilled my glass. That kind of service really pleases me! read more

The Wong's are both great cooks. It's a Mom (Amy) and Pop (Mr. Wong) shop, that overlooks (in the distance) the ocean and the jetty of the Rogue River. Adjacent to Sunset Family Pizza. Ample parking on the side street next to the restaurant. Open weekdays for lunch and dinner, dinner only weekends and closed Tuesdays. Always clean and welcoming. We drive 25 miles one way for lunch at least once a month or so. The lunches specials are $7.25 and under (most are about $6). Lunch comes with hot tea, and soup. The Lo Mien (beef, chicken or veggie) is so tasty, that we almost always get that, along with the fried shrimp. Large portions and made special (no garlic etc.) on request. We have eaten here for 7 years and go out of our way to visit. We are sad to leave the area and not have the chance to enjoy. If we are ever in Gold Beach again this will be a 'for sure' stop. read more

We came upon Wong's Cafe as we drove into town late and it was one of the few restaurant's open. There it was, a rather nondescript, dated looking building where you had to use a side door to enter. Now, I have to preface this by acknowledging I grew up eating Cantonese-style Chinese food from the 50's and 60's in a farming town in the valley. Wong's reminded me so much of these Chinese eateries that were plentiful at the time - cantonese styled offerings, adapted to suit the taste buds of the local patrons, many of whom were Japanese and Filipino Americans. This is food I know and it was like visiting an old delicious memory. It was tasty, clean and good. That said, know this is not like the Chinese food you find today. All of which I eat on a regular basis. This is for the palette that wants unpretentious, flavorful, old-school cantonese food that was around before the influx of new Chinese schools of cuisine. This is its own, un-apologetic style. Measure your expectations accordingly. Then, enjoy the sepia-toned ambiance, Mr and Mrs Wong, and their honest, early Chinese American dishes. The basic ingredients of this dish HAVE to include a spicy chili/bean based sauce, meat, fermented black beans and usually appears dark in color. 30mins later, I picked up my order and once the package was opened in my room, I found instead a pale looking concoction of tofu, meat, corn, carrots and other veggies. We have been coming to gold beach for one of our summer trips for about 6 years now. Just saw this place and thought we would check it out. Had seen the reviews, which are mostly great. My fellow Californian however claims it isn't as good as San Fran or la Chinese food. Completely disagree. The chow mein has a good balance of flavor, not overwhelming soy sauce flavor. The egg rolls were right up there with some top restaurants. I do agree that the fried rice is not what you would expect. Not seasoned but does have pork. A good accompaniment to a saucy dish like broccoli beef. The star for me was the sweet and sour chicken. It has a nice tempura like batter, not soggy or too crispy. There sauce is also very good. Not the artificial red sauce that so many seem to make. Very very good flavor and again, a good balance between sweet and sour. So for Those of you on the fence, go for it. This little cafe has a humble appearance but the food was delicious! I was greeted and served by a very kind woman - who, I believe, had also prepared the food. After I inquired about the difference between chow mein and lo mein she brought a small plate with each type of noodle to show me... what great service! I ordered the lunch special combination "SN1" and it was honestly the best Chinese noodles I've ever had! She adjusted the spice to my request and brought out small dishes of extra sauces to enjoy with the meal too. Oh wow. I'm not certain, because I haven't been to China, but I don't think this food qualifies as Chinese. It's something else. It's not even good. We ordered food to go...pretty simple stuff: pork fried rice, chicken chow mien, egg rolls... We kept easy. Holy fortune cookie, Batman even the fortune cookies were stale!!! The 'fried rice' was regular rice with some dry pork pieces sitting on the top. The egg rolls were these two giant deep fried things when pried open revealed something that resembled a pot sticker. Nothing special at all. I tried ordering on the phone and she was just very confused. They take absolutely forever, I mean she said 45 mins for 6 items, I said ok. We got there at 45 mins, she said another 15. I waited in the car for 15 more minutes. Went in, he said 10. I said I was already told 15 more, now, 10. Some of the best Chinese food I've had in a LONG time! Everything was made to order, easy pickup, and food was absolutely delicious. We ordered egg rolls (amazing and crunchy), mar far chicken, sweet and sour pork, pork fried rice and orange chicken. All the breading was crispy and done perfectly, meat was tender, and they used actual orange slices for the orange chicken instead of that fake processed orange sauce you get from other restaurants.
