This review makes me sad. We really wanted to like this restaurant. Unfortunately, we can not. This was a takeout meal. We got the honey walnut prawns, spicy veggies with tofu and the cheese puffs. The cheese puffs were rather lacking in both flavor and crispness with only 6/order. The spicy veggies had lots of veggies in an average sauce. The tofu was just thrown in and not treated. So, now for the most disappointing part of the meal, the honey walnut prawns. Flavor was pretty good, nice and crispy, unfortunately we couldn't eat it after finding 2 hairs in the dish. We wound up throwing away our entire meal. Just gross. I did call when I found the 1st hair and she was very nice, understood how we were unable to eat our shrimp, said they would give us another when we came back. When I called after finding a 2nd hair, she was very sorry. We talked and I just wanted our money back on the shrimp. She understood. In closing, will we go back? Nope. Ok hands down the BEST CHINESE FOOD in Brookings!! Our family favorite is the Garlic Chicken and their Pork Fried rice! If you have a large group make sure you call ahead to give Shao a heads up and she will make sure your table is ready when you arrive! This place wasn't horrible but it wasn't the best either. I got their combination plate of sweet and sour pork with fried rice and a spring roll. My dad got kung pao chicken with fried rice and we got a big plate of chow mein. The kids ate everything but my oldest ended up throwing it up that night. The fried rice was pretty plain. It didn't have any vegetables and the sweet and sour pork was tough to chew threw. The waitress was nice but was all trying to get done things quickly so it was hard to communicate with her. She never asked if we wanted anything to drink. My dad ended up yelling to her asking for a sweet tea. For such a small town it's not a bad place to eat read more

Wow! I did not know Chinese food could be so bad. This is a cute, small place across the 101 from Rite Aid and McKays. I adored the classic Chinese decorations and ambiance. My husband and I ordered the #8 for lunch. Orange Chicken, chow mein, shrimp and an egg roll. When we got it I was shocked to see EVERYTHING except the chow mein was heavily battered. It was awful. Everything tasted of flour. The chow mein had thick yellow noodles that were tasteless and just gross. There was a strange flavor underlying everything. The egg drop soup was fine but not quite hot enough for my taste. The woman I assume is the owner was slightly concerned about my failure to eat but not enough to take my food off of the bill. In fairness my husband did eat most of his meal but says he will not go back again. It's a shame, I was hoping for a go to place close to home. This is not it. read more

I don't understand the one star ratings for this restaurant. I lived and worked in San Francisco most of my life and was used to eating great Chinese food. When I came to Brookings, I was so delighted to find Chinese food as good as S.F.'s China Town. It's clean, cozy and has a varied menu. It's the go to place when family and friends come to town. Our favorites are sesame chicken, beef broccoli, combination chow mein, or chow fun, war won ton soup, pot stickers, prawns and on and on. read more

The Mongolian beef had 3 times as much onion as beef and was salted to death, the orange chicken was at least 3 parts breading to 1 part chicken, and the fried rice was the poorest excuse for that dish we've ever eaten. Been by this place on numerous occasions and finally decided to stop, really wish I would have kept on passing by. First, our waitress was very, very rude. I really can't explain it, she was very distracted, barely spoke, and had a major attitude. Never received refills on drinks which I desperately needed after ordering the food. Secondly, ordered Mongolian Beef. I don't know if the cook was having a bad day or what, but my Mongolian Beef was an easy 80% onions!!! This is no exaggeration!!! I asked our waitress if my order usually had that many onions and she just giggled and said, "You know that Mongolian Beef has onion in it right". So disappointed. After the glowing Yelp reviews I was so highly anticipating this restaurant that I saved it for my last dinner in town. What a terrible let down. The building is cute and the decor the typical kitsch Chinese restaurant style with paper lanterns, red and gold streamers and a fish tank. Staff was friendly (and actually Asian, usually a good sign). Food was inedible. It literally went into the trash bin. Our order was to go so we could enjoy the fabulous sunset from our room while savoring dinner. Starters: Egg flower soup. No flavor at all, none, nana, nil, zilch. The primary feature of the soup was the thickening agent (corn starch), you could feel the flowery texture on your tongue. Two bites and down the sink. Dinner: Chicken with vegetables. How can a Chinese restaurant screw up a basic stir fry? Dowse it with a reddish watery sauce that was so strongly vinegar that the dish was rendered inedible. YUCK... Again, two bites and straight to the waste bin. Combination chow mein. Again, a basic stir fry shot to hell in a hand basket. The noodles were not Chinese, they were so thick that you had to chop them up before chewing. Flavor, what flavor, not even a hint of soy sauce or onion I wont even go down the path of meat (?) and the unusual textures they presented. If I had been given this during a blind taste test I couldn't even guess as to what I would have thought chewing on this pile of mess. Orange chicken. Okay an Americanized Chinese dish, um no. The sauce had the only flavor of any of the three entrees I picked up this evening but the chicken was so over cooked that it should have been sold as chicken jerky. By now I am hungry and willing to pick through the container to try to find something to eat that I dumped all of it out on a plate and poked it piece by piece with a fork trying to find some soft ones. I finally was able to find a couple of pieces the fork could pierce, so I proceeded to put them in my mouth, OUCH, again so hard I literally thought I has split a temporary crown. Spitting it into my napkin I was pleased to see that my dental work was intact and the only thing there was a sinewy, stringy, over cooked chicken chunk. Normally I would think that I had hit a restaurant on a bad night and give them the benefit of a doubt. Had the family "A" dinner combo. We were allowed to substitute sesame chicken for the sweet & sour as the sesame is white meat. The fried rice was ok but pretty bland with just rice & egg. Not the worst or the best I've had. Pot Stickers were pretty good, not served with the vinegar, fresh garlic and chili oil I love, but I asked for vinegar and oil was on the table. The servings are large. We shared Mongolian beef, Kung Pow chicken and steamed rice. They were okay. Lots of flavour and they don't advertise they don't use MSG but I didn't feel the effects I usually do after having MSG in Chinese food. Shao and Susan are some of the nicest people I've ever met. My husband and I have been going consistently since we moved here three years ago and we will not go anywhere else. The egg flower soup is unlike any recipe I can find online or elsewhere in town. It's simple, yet satisfying. We both add a little soy sauce and pepper to ours BUT I like it either way. The tea they serve is oolong, and the atmosphere has always been extremely calming and inviting to me. I almost always order their green onion beef. It's a good portion of beef with tons and tons of onions for all the onion lovers out there. My husband mixes it up with either teriyaki chicken, or sesame chicken depending on how he's feeling. Teriyaki is very clean with white rice and vegetables. Sesame is deep fried with fried rice as a side. And watch for their lunch specials! We also get their cream cheese puffs for dessert and they are just phenomenal. Love the food, love the crew, and they try not to bug you too much when you're eating. Just refills and a check or two. I will recommend them to everyone any day. Reason over some of the previous reviews I have never felt like Shao was rude or their food was bland. And I have NEVER felt disappointed. If you are looking for Americanized tv dinner style Chinese food then go elsewhere because this place is the real deal . The food has always been hot, fresh, and has excellent favors, portions , and at a good value too. Ordered Mongolian Beef, was warned it was hot... but it was all onions and green onions.. hardly any meat, and all grease. It tasted horrible. we've been looking for a decent chinese restaurant in the area since moving here. guess we'll keep on looking. we went to 'the rice bowl' and were SO disappointed. first the hot and sour soup. i couldn't eat it. it was beefy broth w/'stuff' in it. not hot/spicy, not tart, don't know what it was supposed to be. it wasn't so much not tasty, it tasted bad. i had the twice cooked pork. the cabbage and water chestnuts and sauce were tasty. but the bbq pork? not so much. i've never had bbq pork quite like that. hubby had prawns sizzling plate. the sauce was tasty but. the mushrooms were large chunks and the shrimp was overcooked. the rice was not hot. the tea. omg. first, it wasn't hot or even warm. next, it tasted like lipton tea. read more

This place has incredibly tasty food, a WIDE selection, and good prices for what you get. Service is excellent and the people friendly. The food is definitely 5 stars. Try the #6 dinner special with the beef. That along with the chow mein is heavenly. My only sadness comes from their to-go orders, where they don't include the soup (which they do include for sit-down orders). Their soup is exceptional ! I wish they would reconsider including it in their to-go orders, I'd probably be eating their to-go orders 5 times a week. A small business that Brookings and the gold coast can be most proud of ! Stopped in for lunch as I was down at Gold Beach Lumber and had read the review on Yelp. I'm impressed. Really fast service and a great lunch for under $6. Soup, fried rice, main dish, and fortune cookie. I had the Hunan chicken. Just the right amount of "hot", lots of chicken, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts...and not overloaded with onlons, celery, and bell pepper. My family loves The Rice Bowl! Even my 2 year old daughter gets down on the delicious chow mein, white rice, & broccoli beef. I had driven by this place dozens of times thinking, "No thanks. I bet that place is gross!" Boy was I wrong! Almost 3 years after we originally tried The Rice Bowl, we still make the 30 minute drive (one way) to get take-out. I always highly recommend this place to anyone who will listen, and their chow mein, sesame chicken, & broccoli beef are amazing! Their broccoli is always cooked to perfection, crunchy & fresh. Who would have thought, this hole-in-the-wall, house looking place in Harbor would be one of my family's favorite restaurants in the area!? I certainly did not see this coming. It's been a great lesson for me, that "you can't judge a book by it's cover." I like Wing-Wah in Crescent City, but since we discovered this place it's been fading in the rear-view mirror. Try it!
