It had much less depth than the riggies and felt very one note. A lot of angel hair pasta and two small meatballs. Adding at least garlic or basil to it would have helped. We enjoyed a lovely dinner at Rex's Pasta this evening. I was looking to add Italian into the mix of cuisines we have been sampling during our work trip in Cortland this week and Rex's seemed like our best bet. It's smaller than I anticipated but the bar is long and there isn't much else you really need, na'mean? I was not expecting a wait at around 6:30-7pm on a Saturday but it was around 30 min for 2 people. We decided to forego the wait by sitting at the bar which had a few seats available. The bartender was very friendly and provided excellent service despite the busy demands of the restaurant. We were both very intrigued by the champagne margarita which is, according to the menu, a house special. Not only did it go down easy but the bartender hooked us up because I was turnt about halfway in. There was no pussy footing around with the liquor in that bad boy. I'm trying to reduce the size of the old waistline and decided to start with one of their salads, the only salad that didn't come with a meat product, the yada yada or yada zing or some shit like that. I requested no onions which was accommodated. Maybe it was the strength of the beverage I was simultaneously consuming but I have to say, this was one of the better salads I have had recently. It was dressed PERFECTLY. There was adequate dressing, but it wasn't too soggy or overdressed. The greens were spring mix, which is not a favorite, but it was crisp and fresh. I absolutely demolished this shit and that is probably a first. Usually I find at least a few greens that have seen better days but not today. Angel hair is heavily represented on their menu and I tend to prefer a more bulky noodle so I struggled with this part of the menu. They had some enticing things, something with hot oil which seemed intriguing but it was with the damn angel hair. They had a few other things that either had meatballs or chicken or Alfredo sauce (not friendly to the waistline). I was very impressed by their option to have mushrooms instead of the meat for the vegetarian patrons but I'm an oddball vegetarian that also hates mushrooms. I ultimately settled on the gnocchi but requested no meatball or mushrooms. this probably got lost in translation because we were then faced with what to do with the side salad that comes with it as I had ordered another salad with my meal. We ultimately decided to package the side salad to go for tomorrow. I was also given the option for regular tomato sauce or "dom's" tomato sauce which is supposedly spicy. She detected the sheer terror of indecisiveness when I was faced with these two options and offered to do a halfsies which was the only real way to go. The sauce was delicious and the gnoccchi were a very delightful texture. I did not get any heat from the sauce so I'm not sure what the standards are in this area for spiciness but if you are at all adventurous, don't be worried. Unfortunately, there was a massive meatball on the plate but this was easily avoidable. GF ordered the eggplant parm which consisted of two giant filets of eggplant and a mound of angel hair (I told ya). She ate the shit out of it, with my assistance. For "dessert" we ordered their version of an "adult Gatorade" and I was very disappointed to see a clear drink. Shouldn't it be purple? It also wasn't quite as sweet as the version I was used to ordering in college. Great meal, solid spot. read more

Just when I thought I couldn't taste anything better, I had the veal parmigiana. If you have ever had this dish, I would recommend Rex's version over any other you've had, no matter where you had it. Because of my Italian heritage, I'm pretty particular about my Italian cuisine. Rex's hits th ball out of the park in many areas. At the top are food quality, food portions and service. If your looking for white gloves and an extensive wine list, then Rex's is not your restaurant. However, if you're in it for the food, it is worth going the extra distance and take the time to try Rex's Pasta. You won't be disappointed and you will be coming back. read more

We have been several times. The service is very good and it is nice that they honor your reservations so well. When we arrived the table was already set up with waters poured. They are the best pasta place we have found in Cortland. Everything is very good every time we go, but I haven't yet found a phenomenal meal that I crave. Friends who live in Cortland, NY gave us two options for meeting for dinner as we hail from Liverpool, NY. After viewing the menu, I was sure this was the place which they confirmed would have been their preference as well so off we went. We arrived right after they opened on a Saturday. The escargot was what enticed me and I did not order it so I could do the main course justice. This means I will have to go back! :-) I chose the lasagne which was the perfect balance of just enough seasoned meat to the cheeses down to the perfectly cooked noodles topped with their delectable sauce. Service was outstanding and very friendly making us feel right at home. We took our time to talk and no one rushed us despite people waiting for tables by the end of our meal. Everyone was more than full, we all took home leftovers, and I am definitely making plans for my next visit. The ambience of the place was really nice and cute, but my dish I ordered was sooooo spicy. It was the Three Wise Men dish, which from the menu says hot oil, Dom's Sauce, and Alfredo. I don't know what I was expecting, but I wasn't expecting it to be so spicy that I couldn't taste anything else except spice. I took one bite and then didn't eat the rest. May I add, on the menu itself, the spicy dishes had a pepper by it, and I immediately don't look at dishes with peppers by it. This one didn't, so I thought it wouldn't be unbearably spicy. It was, the waitress took it back and said she would take the dish off my bill which was nice. But when she brought us the check, she informed me she would charge me still for the (very small) salad you receive prior. It ended up costing 7.95, which I thought was ridiculous. Dom's pasta is the best! Take out us working better now that they are taking orders earlier in the day. Look forward to eating on premises later this year! Portion size is great. We don't get the salad because we are cautious. Since we gave to take it home anyway we make our own. Get the house dressing though...it's great. Visited here a few times after hearing good reviews from friends. The place has odd hours so it's a little difficult to find time to get food if you're busy. The restaurant itself is very tiny so I've only ever ordered pick-up. The spicy spaghetti and meatballs were very good and actually spicy! Let's talk Italian and service..... Service the service was ok but I want to have someone wait on me a little more dressed up if I am going to pay the prices they charge. My girl ordered a nice rib-eye steak and it was well cooked and flavorful, but, was $28. Served by a young girl in a T-shirt. I got pasta in "sauce" with meat balls. Any one know the difference in sauce and red gravy? Go there you will. The "sauce" was dark, heavy and just made with paste and puree and was bitter as hell. I asked for sugar to make it less biter and the waitress said allot of people ask for sugar. THEN CHANGE THE SAUCE. The meat ball was large but was full of bread filler and was not seasoned at all. The salad was good. So the bill was $58.00 no wine or soda and I took mine home and added herbs, fresh tomatoes and made it eatable. I won't even discuss the owner father walking about drunk bothering some people. read more

If you are looking for a nice family place to eat in Cortland where the portions are big and the garlic is free flowing look no further! Started with a few desserts first... then some cocktails. On to dinner: Jumbo Ravioli- plate was brimming with hot delicious pockets of cheese! Aunt Josie's Special (Yes this is the same Aunt Josie's plate from Syracuse!) - one with extra garlic plain one regular with extra shrimp and let me tell you the shrimp were big! Then the wife said I should have gotten extra garlic too!!! I had the Pasta Alfredo with added Shrimp. Our waitresses must have heard 1/2 portion out of me... say it isn't so. Oh well it was just as well this way I was able to eat my whole dinner. Then the son ordered Caprese with Chicken. Nice big portion of chicken with the penne pasta and fresh mozzarella and grape tomatoes. Really enjoy coming here and will certainly be back. read more

When we arrived, we were greeted by a friendly waitress. The restaurant itself had a relaxed, warm atmosphere, but there were no seats available, so we were promptly seated on the patio at the back of the restaurant. It was very stark and felt more like a corral. Although roomy enough, it was actually quite uncomfortable. The escargot was terrible, the calamari seemed to have too much cornmeal & was flavorless, the spicy pasta dish was spicy enough, but too oily. The other main pasta dishes were nondescript.
