I'm normally not into Italian restaurants, but Gola Osteria blew me out of the water. WOW. I had a date with someone who was very supportive of my Yelp review ambitions and was enthusiastic about having dinner here. We ended up having 3 courses + drinks and loved EVERYTHING. There's something about the way the chefs pair the ingredients in the dishes. Like we had the arancini for an appetizer and the way they seasoned the food and used ricotta and marinara to balance the cheesy rice balls was well executed. Prices are higher at this spot, but the ambiance and the portion sizes of the food justify it. Photo doesn't do the plating justice because it's a pic of my leftovers lol.

Sam! What a chef. Met him on the way out and it was an honor. Eating my leftovers now and you are soo talented. Unique dishes. We loved our meals. Split the arugula salad with mushrooms and I loved my shrimp dish. Pictures attached. Like other reviews have said this restaurant is hidden in a parking lot and you have to buzz to get in and it's in a residential building but the waiter told us that you can get in another way. Very unique wine menu too. Loved our wine overall a great experience. Wish I could bring Sam back to CT to a restaurant here. Soooo amazing!!!!

After reading great reviews, I was disappointed with my dining experience at Gola Osteria. We were seated at a table by the bar and it was so dark you could barely read the menu. Our waiter did not come over to our table for at least 15 minutes. The food was just okay. The Grilled Octopus was a generous portion of octopus, but half of the portion was undercooked and half of the portion was overcooked. The fennel salad that came with the Grilled Octopus was different and flavorful. The Black Spaghetti was okay -- the pasta was not cooked enough, but there was a decent amount of large shrimp which were good. The Linguine alle Vongole was swimming in butter. The Aperol Spritz was very good.

Very romantic spot. Great service. However, it is a very hidden location. It's by the fountain in the Collegetown Terrace buildings, you have to really enter inside the building and walk through a hallway. There's a paper-sized sign on the front of the door of the building indicating Gola Osteria is inside. Although it is a bit of a funky and hidden location, the food and vibes was certainly a great experience. I came here on Valentine's Day with my boyfriend (definitely book at least a month ahead of time to secure the time and day you want). We got an octopus dish as an appetizer and it blew my mind. Citrusy, savory, texture, all of it was there. Then, we got our main dishes. I got squid ink pasta with meat - it's a little spicy with very flavorful meat. It tastes almost like a little Asian fusion. My boyfriend got a cacio y pepe which is also pretty good but definitely not as flavorful. We were too full to get dessert, otherwise I would have 100% ordered the tiramisu. The service was very attentive, friendly, and full of smiles. I enjoyed my experience, and it is a really special place to go to. Fun fact: they make their pasta in-house, which is a really cool thing to boast about but they don't really highlight that much for their restaurant surprisingly.

Great Italian restaurant near Collegetown - would highly recommend the octopus appetizer and any of the pasta dishes! A great spot for more intimate gatherings or celebrations.

    Is there a dress code?

I saw a variety in terms of dress code so if there is one then I doubt it's enforced. Mostly, everyone seemed to be in casual clothing.

Super cozy restaurant with phenomenal food and service!…read more We ordered a few starters: the chicken liver crostini, beet salad, and mixed green salad--all of which were fantastic. The chicken saltimbocca and bucatini were delicious, but the star of the meal was the hanger steak. Not only juicy and tender, but so so flavorful! I don't order steak often, but I wouldn't hesitate to get it again. They also have a solid selection of cocktails and wine to pair with your meal. The staff are really friendly and helpful with menu suggestions and wine pairings. I believe it's run by a family, and it certainly provides the comfort and care of one. We enjoyed a fabulous dinner and will be back!

The layout and vibe were nearly identical to the other location: cozy, softly lit, and upscale. Deciding what to eat was the hardest part. I went with my gut and got their Lamb Ragu Pasta - rich, herby, and the pasta had this firm bite. My girlfriend had the Porchetta, which she found a bit too fatty, though she polished off the potatoes with zero hesitation. My friend ordered the Chicken Piccata. I tried it, nodded, and moved on - good, but not groundbreaking. We ended with an affogato (fancy words for vanilla ice cream drowned in espresso). Simple, classy, and somehow the star of the night. If nothing else, I'd come back just for that.

Unique mac and cheese and good gnocchi!…read more I am debating giving the rook 3 or 4 stars... I was not a fan of the salmon mousse... far too salty and I wish it was paired with crisped bread or at least something other than Ritz crackers. I did, however, enjoy the presentation and taste of the macaroni au gratin. The square shape is very unique and I liked the cheese sauce. The lamb w gnocchi was also quite good. Pillowy and soft. The lamb was cooked well. Overall, I would maybe return. I enjoyed the macaroni au gratin as well as the lamb w gnocchi!

Staff was pleasant and quick. The menu is dominated by drink options (cocktails and wines), and happy hour is 4-5pm, which is perfect for an aperitif. The fried chicken is by far their speciality, with the macaroni coming in as a distant second. But while both were delicious, I'd say the best value and taste goes surprisingly to the simple summer salad, which was crisp, sweet, tangy, and refreshing. It's only $10 for a hefty portion of food and I'd order that again anytime (and that's coming from a guy who'd never normally order a salad). My only criticisms are that the Rook doesn't have many entree choices (which may be a good thing for indecisive diners), and that it's very slightly pricey. Otherwise, it's an easy recommend for me.

My recent…read morebrunch experience included ordering a Where the West Begins omelette, which includes "Braised short rib, butternut squash, red onion jam, spinach, smoked gouda". I wasn't sure how to feel about butternut squash with everything else (I'm not necessarily a huge squash fan - but I'm trying to learn to enjoy it), but the omelette was decent... it's the other side on my plate that looked less than appetizing. The biscuit was still covered in flour (and who wants to bite down on a clump of flour?), the cheddar hashbrown casserole lacked in flavor, and the brown sugar cinnamon oatmeal just... wasn't doin' it for me. Other recent experiences have been similar... there's usually one item on the plate that's flavorful or imventive (sometimes a main dish, sometimes a side), and the other parts of the plate are lacking. In reality, I think MIX is suffering a bit from rising food costs and inconsistency in their service and offerings. They've also changed the style of their menu from the original tapas-style to now being more typical entree options. Again... they've lost some of their innovative, experimental approach. In terms of ambiance, it really depends. I've been here for a work event and, because of the number of people, it was SO LOUD... they had also done a buffet offering for the event. As you can imagine, the food from the buffet was lacking, but that's often what happens when you're more mass producing your food (and it's left in a chafing dish, trying to be kept warm). On the other hand, I've been here for a dinner on a random night and was able to enjoy one of their Thai noodle bowls (and split some other apps with friends). The reality is that experiences at MIX are... well... a mix. Whether service, menu offerings, etc., I've found MIX's recent inconsistencies to be a disappointment. Will probably only visit in the future if it's suggested by others.

Server also didn't write down our orders, and then brought out one of the orders incorrectly... which, unfortunately, my friend didn't feel like she could send back because everything was taking so long. Food itself was okay... but could use more flavor. For example, a friend and I split the lobster corn fritters (fresh Maine lobster, sweet corn, asiago, cilantro, honey mustard, and sriracha). The fritters were almost entirely corn, and I tasted no hint of asiago or the cilantro (and I like cilantro, so I tend to pick up on the taste pretty easily... but there was nothing). The pizza I ordered for my main dish was fine... if perhaps a bit undercooked. One of my friends ordered a pizza with tomatoes on it, and it came out with large, rectangle chunks of tomato covering the pizza (red and yellow tomatoes). At first, she though the yellow tomatoes were pineapple chunks because of the size. She figured out they were tomatoes, but the amount of them on the pizza itself made it a bit awkward to eat. Ambiance was interesting. It feels welcoming enough, but the door to the outside patio was open and there were numerous flies that would seemingly dive-bomb my friends and I during our meal. Because the door was open, it was also a bit muggy inside the restaurant itself. Anyway... would I/we rush back? Probably not. FIVE MINUTES LATER we received our personal slices which had been left in the oven so long the crust was burnt to a crisp. When I said "excuse me, this is burnt" to the counter person, they looked at me with a blank stare and then proceeded to walk away. As a former server, maitre d, and FOH manager, I know this is not how you appropriately handle a situation in which a guest is upset before even touching their food. There was no offer to replace the (literally black crusted) pizza, no "sorry" no ... anything.
