This review is delayed for 2 months to see how my final haircut would appear, and I have to say that despite the friendly service, the first $10 off the initial haircut, I was really unhappy with my initial haircut, and my haircut never blossomed beyond the initial bad haircut look. I do have high expectation from a salon, especially because I embody the typical Asian hair; but alas, this place did not utilize the typical sheers and scissors that are used in Boston Chinatown for a good Asian haircut. Overall, the staff was great and my hairstylist was fun to talk to and professional, but the skill set was...not tailored for me. I had a wonderful haircut yesterday by Jessica Barnes. Lured by the stellar reviews for the salon, I called and asked for a same day appointment. This was especially wonderful because I am 9 months pregnant (due tomorrow). I arrived at 12:15 for my 12:30 appointment and Jessica accommodated me right away. She spent so much time with me - over an hour, and I felt super pampered. The shampoo experience was so great....I could have sat there forever. And she took her time styling my hair, saying "I don't want you to have to do your hair for a few days". It looked awesome afterwards, and felt so light. I have been searching for a stylist in Providence, feeling okay about past ones, but I can't wait to return to Ky Michaels and to see Jessica again. As other Yelpers have noted, the salon is super chic and clean and a pleasure to be in. In the past year I have come to Ky Michaels Salon 3 different times. The haircut studio is very clean and chic. They don't have a private lot to park in but I have never had any problems parking on the street. It is not so busy in that neighborhood. Every employee who works there is super friendly and welcoming. It is pretty easy to get an appointment even if it is last notice. I usually pay around 50 for my haircuts which is reasonable because I get a wash, cut, and dry. The first time I had a wonderful haircut from Danielle. She cut bangs, angles, layers... pretty much the whole shebang. I was very happy with my haircut. The second time I came I had a different stylist but I cannot remember her name. She cut full front bangs for me. A couple days later I decided I looked horrible with front bangs. Not her fault at all. I just looked chubby and childish with them. The third and finally time I came her was last week before my college graduation. Danielle was my hair stylists this time. I told her do what ever she thought would look good that my hair is super boring. My side bangs have never looked better!!! I can honestly say this was one of the best haircuts I ever received. The only thing I don't like is that they blow out your hair, put yummy smelling products in it and your hair looks amazing but after that it never looks that good. Okay it is not really a bad thing they just spend their time to make you look your best. I guess if I blow dried my hair every day the way that they do the day of the haircut my hair would look that good everyday. But, I don't have that much time on my hands so quickly brushing my hair and leaving it to air dry will have to do. Come get a haircut from Danielle and you will not be disappointed. read more

I love this place! Everyone there is so sweet, and from what I could tell, they're all extremely talented. I had Danielle ! She was fabulous. She bleached my hair and we put in some purple and pink color. It looks so pretty. I am going in for another appointment to add some more color, after looking back at the picture of what I showed her, it wasn't what I wanted. They were super kind when I called back asking for another appointment to see what they could to mirror the picture. I will update when that's done ! So, I went back to get my hair redone. I had to pay another $300 (+55 for tip -I chose to give her this much, and was not pressured, JS). Totally the right color and style this time... I'm a little sad that I could've saved 400 dollars though if it were like the picture the first time. I wish I was told. Ok. So I called Ky. And he is amazing. Super sweet and kind. He called me back to talk about what was done and I will say that he's taking care of me and I'm totally happy with everything. I'm so impressed by the customer service. I gave this place a shot based on all of the glowing reviews and I was not disappointed! When I called they only had one slot open that day for a haircut and I jumped at the opportunity. I arrived 10 minutes before my appointment and there was noone at the desk so I had a seat. A few stylist filtered in and out of the desk but I was never greeted. Once it was a few minuted past my appointed time I stepped up to the desk and gave the gentleman my name. Not the greatest first impression, but definitely the only bump in the experience I was scheduled with Jena and was blown away by her consultation. I explained that I wanted long-ish hair on the top and shaved on the sides, but that she was also free to give me some suggestions on a cut. She then gave me some celebrity names to conjure up an image in my head. She was also really awesome and parted out the hair and actually explained the haircut to me. Jena also explained each of the hair-care products she was using and recommended that I get the mousse. Super awesome product for those of us with fine hair, I love love love it! She also gave me some tips on how to style it at home. It's been a few weeks since the haircut and I can honestly say that I am able to recreate something gorgeous at home. Whoever runs their website should really put Jenas picture up on her bio. Because she doesn't have one up it gives the impression that she is a junior stylist, but the woman is definitely confident and talented with a pair of scissors! Highly recommend her! read more

I've gotten my hair cut at Ky Michaels Salon three times already, so I figured that it was about time I wrote a review! Emily is my girl - I always ask for her and I've never had a bad experience. I've got short hair, and I believe that's her forte, though I've got no doubt that she's amazing with any hair length. After my first haircut, I knew she was THE ONE (hairstylist) for me, and since then, I've just let her take the reins with my hair. I've gotten to the point where I just tell her to have fun with it and give her pretty much no guidelines (other than the fact that I like my hair short), and I always leave feeling awesome. She's creative and fun, and you can tell she not only has great technical skill, but that she loves what she does, and that's what makes such a huge difference. I could go on forever about how great she is, but the best would be for you to book an appointment with her and see how wonderful she is for yourself :) As for everything else, I really like the salon. All of the staff are really friendly, I like the music, everything is clean, and the waiting area is comfortable. Every member on Ky's team treats you well and I have no complaints at all. I moved here about 14 months ago, and have had a hard time finding a new hair salon. I was with my girl for over 10 years in CA so it was a bit stressful for me. After trying a place that kept losing stylists, overcharged me, and made me feel like I was wasting their time, I decided to try Ky Michaels. I called on a Friday, and they squeezed me in the next day! I had an appt with Jessica and she was awesome! Side note, she moved here from San Diego like I did so it was a personal connection that made me feel even more comfortable. The place is cute, modern and clean. I enjoyed my time there and walked out with a great cut and color. Great service and tons of smiles. I'm willing to pay a little more for this type of service but that certainly wasn't an issue. I've been living in Providence for 2 years and have dreaded getting my hair cut. I had a few bad experiences at a salon not too far from here and since then I was avoiding finding a new stylist. Thankfully I turned to yelp and saw the high ratings for this salon. I called and got an appointment the same morning. Jessica was my stylist and she did a fantastic job. I showed her an image of what I wanted and she knew exactly how to translate it for my hair type. She did take her time cutting it (an hour and 15 minutes) but it was totally worth it in the end. It was such a relief to be happy with the way my hair looked and I got a ton of compliments on it at work the next week. Ky is the first stylist I've ever been to more than once. He's very friendly, much less intimidating than most hairstylists (if you don't think hairstylists are intimidating in the first place, you are braver than I am), and he really, really listens to what I want. I also have a tendency to explain the simple things I want done to my hair in very convoluted ways, and he always knows exactly what I'm trying to say. I appreciate that. I've had way too many stylists try to put some sort of spin on what I ask for. If I want them to do whatever they want, I'll say that (and I have said it before), but that's not usually the case. He will give suggestions, but he will always ask first if he has an idea. I am confident that if I asked Ky to do something crazy, he'd do it and do an excellent job. But he's just as good at giving me the boring haircuts that I ask for. The atmosphere is pleasant, not overwhelming even if there's lots of clients being tended to. It's a good haircut experience, and I'd definitely recommend it. read more

Riki. One word, like all the great women. So of course there is a story...basically the saga of my bangs. She knows the way of my bangs and didnt make a big deal out of it. She nailed it. Today was my first trip there. Everything about my experience from entering the salon to finally leaving with my hair cut was a positive and delightful experience. I only wish my hair grew faster so I can come back for another cut! I consider this salon to be upscale from my usual salon visits. I measured this from the welcoming staff, the cute decor, and of course the hair cut!!! My stylist was Jessica. I asked for layers and a bang and was extremely satisfied with the results. I was more so thankful for the extra effort she put in to fine tune my hair cut. She used some cutting techniques that I haven't seen before. I had been looking at reviews for Ky Michaels Salon, and since it had so many good ones, figured I would give it a shot- I am so glad I did! I had a wonderful experience at Ky Michaels Salon. I called about a week in advance and they were able to get me in with the exact time and day I wanted. Morgan did my color and highlights- she spent time with me discussing what look I wanted and completely delivered- I was thrilled with the result! The color came out amazing with a lot of dimension and my highlights looked sun kissed and natural (exactly what I was going for). While I was waiting for the color to process I was asked multiple times if I needed anything- the staff was so friendly and helpful- even Ky himself came over to see if I needed coffee or a magazine! I felt very taken care of. The best part about the whole experience was the blowout. She absolutely rocked it. I love Ky. In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I've been with Ky pretty much since I moved to RI almost 10 years ago from Boston. The experience starts from the time you book your appointment. Everyone is professional and kind and eager to book you into a convenient appointment. For those of us office types, there are plenty of evening and weekend appointments available. Appointment times are booked adequately, so there's always time for your complete service. The salon's location is great. It's convenient from the highway, in a cool area with lots of fun shops to walk around and check out if you like, and with plenty of free parking. Inside, the salon is clean and welcoming, with comfortable chairs and an attentive staff. I'm always offered a drink when I come in, which is a nice touch. When I have no idea what I want to do with my hair, Ky is very happy to go creative. But when I know EXACTLY what I want, he never disappoints. This past weekend, I wanted some slightly more exterme color, and I couldn't be happier with the results. We discussed a few options about whether to cover or work with my old highlights, and his ultimate recommendation was "if you're going to do it, we should have it come out exactly the way you want it." We invested the time to get exactly what I said I wanted, and I'm thrilled. His prices are extremely reasonable for a salon and a stylist of this caliber. When I first moved here, before finding Ky, I went to another salon that fancied themselves top-notch. They charged me a top-notch price, but made me feel like they were doing me some giant favor, while giving me an astoundingly average cut. Ky is the polar opposite. He is down to earth and friendly, but a seasoned professional who can bring out the best in even my ridiculously thick, ornery hair. Just had a great haircut here today. I booked my appointment based on Yelp reviews. When I walked in they offered & brought me some coffee which was a nice touch. My hair hadn't been cut in over a year, reached my lower back & was thick and dry. I've been using a clarifying shampoo everyday, and was told this is a big no-no! First thing they did was give my hair a treatment that made it feel like silk. Something with the words 'Born Again' in it which made me laugh. Then I showed Ky some pictures of what I wanted (with bangs!) and my hair turned out better than what I imagined, and really compliments my face shape. This is the first salon that I can say I'll happily visit again. I'm a happy girl. Thank you Ky! Next time, I'm thinking of getting an even more dramatic cut because I trust him. The Hair Saga, Part 2... I went back to Ky today, six weeks after I went from dyed-black to red in a single day. Color notes: My red color has lasted wonderfully. It was getting a little brassy at the end of the 6th week, which is obviously to be expected, but it didn't look bad at all. In fact, if my ugly mousy roots weren't showing, I probably could have gone another month. I use Kevin Murphy shampoo and conditioner, which is pricey, but is also the first high-end hair product that I can justify buying because it works that well. We redid my red color, and it turned out great, which is to be expected - nothing new there. Cut notes: I chopped all my hair off! The ends were just too dry after bleaching them. You couldn't tell by looking at my hair, but I could feel it and it was bothering me too much to justify keeping it long. Ky gave me a really cute layered chin-length bob and I've already gotten compliments from strangers on the street AND my professional model sister. I love it! Overall notes: I'm moving to Minnesota in a week, and one of the things I'm going to miss most is this salon. I've only been here twice, but it's a place where you instantly feel comfortable, instantly trust the stylists, and you're treated like a human being. You're not a customer the salon has to appease in order to make money. Instead, you're someone that the stylists want to see happy and confident. I am a haircut snob and well on my way to being a haircolor snob. I've been to some of the best salons in the country, and I can truly say that I trust Ky to style my hair more than the other, significantly more expensive folks in DC, Boston, Baltimore, etc. Go here for great hair.
