They never let you know what you are being billed for or what they plan to do during your visit. Last time I checked out the bill felt high but it is what it. Until I thought about it and asked for an itemized breakdown. Turns out I was charged for two haircuts. Also you can book a cut and color but you end up with highlight a glaze and no haircut. They just do whatever they can charge most for in the time they have. Also very hard sell on products and lectured that if you don't buy products at the salon your hair won't last. Also some stylist require you to stay absolutely still for the entire 4 hour visit. The blame issues on bad color cut or timing on of you move in the chair. It expensive with no perks. No changing room no coat check. No water or coffee. Over priced budget service and every single person leaving the salon has the same cut and color. read more

I've never had hair problems before I started visiting this salon. Disappointed time and time again. I moved from Hawaii and was looking for a salon that specializes in quality hair care and a stylist that had experience with blondes. I did countless hours of research before deciding to come here, and I regret it deeply. I sent numerous photos of my hair, and how I liked how it was- just was moving and was looking to have the same hair highlights and overall color. Every-time I left the salon I was disappointed and felt worse than when I came in. I don't like ashy tones on myself, and every. single. time. I would voice I don't like this color, it's too ashy, and the stylist would just dismiss me and tell me that it's blonde and made me feel belittled to where I felt like my own opinion of my hair didn't matter. I've never left this salon happy with my hair, I've voiced my concern multiple times, but the atmosphere here doesn't feel welcoming if you voice your concerns so why would you want to go back for their "one week" guarantee. Shame on me for continuing to go back, I felt that if I kept giving it a shot maybe eventually my hair would look how the photos of my actual hair was before I moved, but low and behold, my hair is currently darker than my natural hair color.. My most recent visit is the reason for the review, and the reason I will not return, and encourage others to be cautious before choosing this salon. I came for a partial highlight, days before being in my best friends wedding to get lightened up before the big day. What a disaster. Immediately the stylist greeted me and said my hair was green( I disagreed), and asked if I've been in a pool- I haven't, as any blonde knows don't mix your hair with chlorine. She then asked if I had moved, which I had. I then explained that we had a brand new water filtration system installed, as well as a softener but she insisted that the well water caused my hair to be "green" Then we proceed, a few hours later I end up with my hair in a slicked back bun, because they can't get my hair untangled. I was sent home with my hair in a sopping wet bun and told to come back tomorrow. Never in my life have I heard of a salon sending you home and being told they'll fix it later. Needless to say. I went home crying. I called the company that installed our water system, they came out to our house the next day to test our water. Water results came back in, our water Ph, iron levels, etc were better than that of city water... so I'm not sure that my well is to be blamed for how wrecked my hair came out leaving this salon when I've had well water my whole life and my hair never ended up this tangled in my life. I rearranged my entire schedule to come back the next day, they shampooed me, and my hair was dark and ashy... surprise surprise. Disappointed yet again. I went to 2 other highly rated salons in the area to get a consult and another opinion, needless to say they completely disagreed with studio 101 assessment of my hair and did not think my hair had any damage from well water and I showed them the results from our water test. Thankfully I was able to have my hair fixed and highlights put back in from another salon. After paying thousands $$ and numerous visits being disappointed, voicing my concerns- yet being dismissed every time I will not be returning and I would urge others to be wary. read more

My daughter and I needed to have our hair done for a wedding after a salon to be unnamed took a deposit from my daughter, who through no fault of her own could not get from Boston to Providence in time to make the appointment because of the Celtics parade. This wonderful salon not only accommodated myself and my daughter, but did an amazing job and considering prices in the area where I live, was beyond reasonable. I wish I could less than a 1 star because my experience was horrible. I hardly ever write reviews but i had to share this to save others. I requested the owner because I thought she would have the most experience but I was very wrong. She didn't listen to what I wanted at all and did what SHE thought would good. She bleached all of my hair without me knowing and didn't leave any of my natural color as I had requested. She charged me for a multitude of services that I didn't approve and my bill ended up coming to almost $1000. If you want your hair ruined and to be overcharged, feel free to go here. read more

It's been about a year since I have gone to this salon and Looking back retrospectively, I can say my hair is a lot healthier now than it ever was when I would go here consistently. I know that dying your hair blonde involves bleaching it, which undeniably leads to damage, but I feel as though they were extremely harsh on my hair here compared to other salons. Ive been getting the same highlights/balayage done for 8ish years but never was my hair so brittle and fried until going here. I also don't love how you are part of the assembly line and whoever you see is juggling you and another client at the same time. I think I've come here about 9-10 times and only twice have I walked out really LOVING my hair and thinking it was worth the $250+ dollars that I've spent. On a final and positive note, if I will say that Greta is really talented at achieving beautiful blonde highlights and my hair has always felt the healthiest/fullest after seeing her, and I have friends that would agree with this. The hairdresser, Jessica, injured my scalp while bleaching my hair. Also, the result is a completely different color from the photo I showed her. I paid the extra $200+ plus 20% tips because she said she had to use more coloring products and time. However, when I got home, I noticed that the color was not what I wanted. The next day, my scalp was still so painful and totally covered in scabs. While they, my hairdresser and the owner of the salon, Kristen, doing the root bleaching, I told them to check my scalp and see if it's ok cuz I was feeling burning and painful, they said my scalp looked fine not even red. The next day, I texted my hairdresser about the issue with my scalp and the wrong color. She didn't even say sorry and only said it could happen and even mentioned because I'm pregnant... (i don't know, somehow she became a doctor??) although she offered me a complementary toner and blowout. I took the offer but also said: I appreciate her offer but If it doesn't work, it would be only fair that I ask for the extra $200 back. Since then, the hairdresser and the owner never ever responded. And of course the feedback system on the email sent by them doesn't work either. I don't know about you, but I think lots of people care about their hair. To me, my hair is one of the most important things I care about. So, be careful and prepared if you are planning to go to this salon and bleach or color your hair, there is a high chance that you could only get excuses when they screw up your hair and still charge you tons of money. (The consultation in person was a joke cuz they ended up charging me almost double the price) It was absolutely a terrible experience, an unprofessional hairdresser and a ridiculous salon. read more

I will never return to this salon. Upon looking I noticed this has happened to another client. Jessica needs to find another profession. She was my stylist and she ruined my hair. The haircut was an atrocity. The owner did offer to fix it which I did let her. Upon leaving the receptionist asked me if I wanted another appointment, to which I stated I would not be back. They must have had an old appointment in there system and 3 months later my credit card was charged 180.00 for a no-show. I had to call the owner numerous times until we got it resolved. Kristen is a great stylist - she knows exactly what she's doing and will make all your hair dreams come true. After many years of cutting my hair by myself (sorry) I went in a couple years ago for a professional cut. Lori has always done a great job cutting my hair, and I appreciate that she always gives recommendations on how to care for my hair that are suitable for my life/routine. I've gone to salons before where the stylist recommends an 800 product routine that requires 3 different tools and I just sit in the chair thinking "lol I'm never going to do any of that." Lori actually listened to me when I said I wasn't interested in a complicated hair routine! Served green tea and regularly updated did not feel neglected. Lori listened to me and made helpful suggestions when I was unsure of what I wanted. She took the time to give me style points even though it was well past the hour of closing on a Friday night. All her tips were easily reproducible by someone who's a bit of a klutz with hair. First of all this place is SWANKY but in that oh so FABULOUS way... hardwood floors, chandeliers, + exposed brick! Beautiful. I had my hair + makeup done for a recent photo-shoot. Everyone who worked there was so lovely, warm + welcoming. The offer of something to drink is always a nice touch! I've been seeing Taylor for over 2 years and she is directly and completely responsible for this addiction. Thanks to Yelp, I was able to find Studio 101 and get an appointment just in time for a wedding. Being an out of towner, I was leery of letting a stranger cut my hair but needed it so badly it was worth the risk. How lucky I was! The folks at Studio 101 are incredibly welcoming, and I could tell this was a thoughtfully designed place. It is a warm atmosphere with wood floors, chandeliers, and floor to ceiling mirrors. Taylor took time to discuss what I wanted and talk through what would work. She was able to create the perfect side-swept bang and even explained to me techniques for styling. I appreciated her attention and care, which she might not have had much incentive to do given that I can't be a regular customer. This is a great place and I don't know what the going rate for a cut is in Providence, but at $55 this would be an absolute steal in LA. Take advantage! read more

I came in here looking for an ombre kind of hairstyle. I'm so lucky and happy they were able to accommodate me in such a short amount of time. my hairdresser was Taylor, and she was so sweet and the three or four hour process went by really quickly because of her. When she was finished with my hair, I really really loved it. Now this isn't her fault but, a week passed and I absolutely hated my hair. I feel like to maintain an ombre, you have to always use heating tools and I'm not one to use those on my hair especially knowing the damage that it can cause... So basically I paid $300, hated it after a week...and bought a box of black hair dye for $8 and I feel a lot better. Lol Not Taylor's fault. The ombre did come out beautiful, but for it to look beautiful all the time I would have to, like I said, use a curler or blow dry my hair all the time and I'm just too lazy and afraid of my hair getting damaged for that. read more

Best salon! I'll never go anywhere else. I always leave excited about my hair and feeling amazing! Kristen is fantastic. She is a brilliant colorist and always gives me an expert cut and style. I've had highlights, lowlights, balayage, gloss/glazes, etc and it always looks flawless. Very natural, and I get TONS of compliments on my hair. And when my hair grows out and I can't make it to the salon for a few extra weeks, it always grows out very well-blended so my hair still looks good until I can get back. She always gives me great cuts that are exactly what I ask for. I also love how she gives me advice for at-home haircare. My hair is longer, stronger, and visibly and palpably healthier since I started seeing Kristen a few years ago. This is a benefit both from the way she treats and colors my hair and from listening to her advice. She just clearly knows what she is doing and is an expert in her craft--I trust her with my hair implicitly! Not only is Kristen great, but every stylist at Studio 101 is excellent and talented. Even the girls who shampoo and assist are skilled and professional. You always know you are in good hands. It is clear from watching the care and effort Kristen puts into educating her aspiring stylists that she values quality to the utmost. The receptionists are helpful, friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. They are one of the many reasons that Studio 101 has such a pleasant environment. It is an open and clean space with a chic and upbeat vibe. Another thing I love about Studio 101 is that during the holidays there are elegant decorations around that Kristen does herself--that's the kind of thing that makes me really appreciate a business. My hair can be difficult, but every time Kristen does it I feel confident because I know it looks fabulous. Last thing I'll say is this: I moved to DC over a year ago and I still get my hair done by Kristen. I refuse to let anyone else touch my hair. I choose to wait until I am back in RI for a family visit to get my hair done rather than let anyone besides Kristen do it. I cannot say enough glowing things about her. I've been a client of Kristen's for...I've lost count of the years! It's been at least 9 or 10. I've happily followed her when she's moved salons because she's the only one I trust with my hair. :) She always listens to and wants my input when I see her, and has always remembered our convo from my first visit with her where I said: I don't want to have to style my hair, I just won't spend the time on it. So if it takes more than 5 minutes, I don't want it. Other than that, have fun. She always makes sure that the style / cut / color complement *me*. Not just my need to not have to spend a whole lot of time on my hair, but my personality as well. She always has ideas for fun colors (I love the reds, fuschias, and whatever else she comes up with!) and great styles. And always, *always*, they're easy styles to maintain and still look good 10 weeks later! Studio 101 is also a great place - easy to get to, super nice people working there, great atmosphere. When I walked in I was thinking about getting just a trim but I told her to convince me to get my haircut short and sure enough she convinced me.
