I called the manager, She was unprofessional and rude. She did not give me a full refund and I am furious. She acted like a real life Regina George from Mean Girls. I understand that not everybody feels comfortable walking into the space (I don't love feeling like a misfit in a room full of confident babes, either), but once I'm in the chair, I completely forget there's anyone else around; Lauren treats me like an MVP every visit and I genuinely feel like I'm having a conversation with an old friend. Never do I feel judged, nor like I'm boring her or wasting her time. I don't feel forced into uncomfortable small talk since the conversation flows so naturally; she's smart, professional, and sincerely cool. It's worth reiterating that the price of your visit ALSO includes intangibles like active listening. Lauren encourages me to share my ideas, photos, million questions, and requirements before we start. Any concerns, re: texture, length, complimenting my skin or face shape, color, maintenance, styling, etc. are addressed fully and thoroughly, and she checks in with me several times throughout the appointment to make sure we're still headed in the right direction/achieving the results I want, offering me the control to change my mind, ask questions, or fine-tune along the way. Never have I felt so in control of my appearance, nor had as much trust in the person doing the work - she always knocks it out of the park. I've been to this salon 3 times. Every time I go, I show them a picture of the blonde I want, absolutely no dark hair in the pictures, and they still leave so much dark in my hair. My last visit, I made it a point to say I didn't want any dark in my hair. I was initially okay with the results because she didn't leave as much dark as the last girl did. Then recently, I saw this picture someone took of me. The last girl I went to completely missed two huge strips on the back of my head. I'm so embarrassed that I've been walking around like this. I have been going to Lauren Billingsly for EXACTLY two years now (happy anniversary). I can't even think about going to anyone else without getting anxious, every time I go no matter what cut I get it's perfect. From bangs to layers to fixing the undercut I got on a whim without consulting you (oops). The salon itself looks like a building made for photoshoots: Clean, minimalistic, greenery, big open space, and room to walk so you're not crowded screaming over each other. I called and booked an appointment for Tuesday April 18th for highlights. I was told by Jessica if I didn't cancel the appointment within a specific amount of time there would be a fee. She never said how much. Due to circumstances beyond my control I did not make the appointment. I received a call from Jessica stating they were going to charge my visa $ 220.oo for not showing up. I love my color and my stylist did a great job. She also mentioned the salon offers Brazilian blowouts although I didn't see this on their website. When I checked my email receipt I admit I was pretty surprised to see I was charged $45 to touch up my undercut, which took about 5 minutes using a buzzer and I wasn't cleaned up after so had a nice itchy drive home. Even with Manhattan prices which I am used to I've never been charged more than $15-20, and I am usually cleaned up afterward as well. I checked their website and a "barbered haircut" with clippers is $35, not $45, which is still expensive for what I received so somewhat frustrating to see I was upcharged. They send you a follow up email after your service in case you have questions, which is nice in theory but I responded and have yet to hear back about my questions... I will definitely come back especially as my stylist was super sweet and really thoughtful with her work, but will skip the undercut touch up and ask any questions in person! :) read more

Such a shame, located in Olneyville in the same complex as Riffraff Books, Clinica Esperanza, and Troupe, Ello Pretty is a glossy beacon of gentrification catering to clients dropping $$$ to become more blonde, don't expect to be treated with standard customer curtesy if you're coming in for regular barbered cuts ($35). I should have listened to my gut when 1. My stylist asked me what it meant to be non-binary on my first appointment 2. I showed up once for an appointment and was told they didn't have me on the schedule 3. They called me at 10:30 am to cancel an 11 am appointment when I was already across town 4. Have paid full price for canceling an appointment 24 hours in advance, they do have a 48 hour cancellation policy although the policy describes no shows as requiring 100% of the fee, cancellations 50%. 5a. Left without a haircut when I arrived 8 min late for my appointment. I apologized genuinely for arriving late as I biked across town in the rain on my lunch break and road visibility was limited / required caution... front desk's reply? "I've had to train myself to leave extra early for appointments." Some of us have busy lives, work in medicine, and squeezing in a haircut is tough. 5b. This was even more insulting as I had another appointment scheduled with them for the week prior, but got a call that they had made a mistake while scheduling and needed to move me to a later date. Cool, but then why schedule me for such an inflexible time? They had rescheduled me at a time that squeezed me between another client getting highlights, and had no wiggle room for a barbered cut with clippers (takes 10-15 min) because the stylist needed to be attentive to the final results of ongoing color lifting for their main client. Here's a tip: maybe try giving clients their own appointment times!! Its a shame that after all the times I've been patient and lenient with their mistakes to not be treated with the same decency. The only conclusion I have is this place just does not value customers seeking short haircuts equally, the stylists will see themselves as above it (less costly service), and you'll be put to the back of the line time after time as they service a room full of ladies with enough time and financial resources to dedicate 4+ hours to lightening their hair. Yep, you've been read. Enough is enough, you honestly couldn't pay me to go back here. I'll be taking my business for cuts and products elsewhere thanks. POC owned businesses to the front! read more

She is a wizard when it comes to my hair, and makes me feel so beautiful! I have been seeing Kara Evans for hair cuts and color for several months. I have shaved, barbered sides and a shaggy modern mullet-type style. Many stylists are uncomfortable with untraditional hair, but not Kara. She is fantastic! Kara makes sure you leave with exactly what you want. She checks in periodically during the service to make sure you are happy or would like her to make changes. In between appointments, she also keeps in touch to make sure you are happy with your regrowth and will answer any product or styling questions you may have. The only problem was the hair cut - the most important thing of all. I had asked for face framing layers, layers all around, and for it to be cut a certain length. It seemed like she had rushed the job and just tried to cut off a couple inches. When she finished the cut she was moving around my hair so much didn't realize the lack of layers and the fact that my hair was still longer than the length I had asked. The haircut was something that I could have done myself and have done the past. The only reason why I wanted to get it cut professionally was for the layers. I feel like there was probably a lack of skill which is aggravating considering the prices they charge. I'm all for getting what you paid for but this place left me feeling jipped. read more

I see Stephanie, and she is so talented, every time I leave I get so many compliments on her work! Had a perfect blowout by Alyssa last Saturday. Myself along with three girlfriends went for blowouts and had a fantastic experience. Olivia greatest us at the door with the biggest smile to make us all feel completely welcome. The entire staff were all extremely accommodating as they offered us various refreshments and totally rocked each of our blowouts. Alyssa truly understood what I wanted as far as style goes. My gorgeous waves lasted all day, night, and into the next day/night. She put the perfect amount of product to give my hair some extra love too. Guys, I want to like this place. Really, I do. The staff is so kind and they serve blueberry sours as a part of their beer and wine selection. Actually, the wine and beer selection is totally on point here. Wait, though. I'm not writing about a bar. Hello Pretty is a salon but I think they'd be even better if they marketed themselves as a bar where you could get hair and waxing done because that's about how lackadaisical and sloppy their styling is. I got my eyebrows done here once. First, they weren't even. Second, they looked about as grown out as they did before when I'd asked the stylist if she could keep them looking 'natural.' I went ahead and scheduled a hair appointment on the day of brow disappointment. Why? I was already there and figured they may do a better job with hair because of the rave Yelp reviews. I had a bad feeling given that all the pictures people have posted are basically of the same soft angled bob styled with waves done with product and a curling iron. Yet I persisted. I tried to describe what I wanted, which was more texture and to avoid having to use extensive product and styling beyond blow drying because I already have to get up at 5 am for work most mornings. Well, that resulted in not much more than my split ends being trimmed and some weird uneven cutting at the bottom. I think they aren't trained to do much besides the aforementioned bob because the stylist was very reluctant to touch with scissors above my chin, saying there were a lot of layers. This resulted in a very limp, flat cut. On top of that, she insisted on giving me a cut where I used expensive product, a flat iron and a curling iron only to give me a variation of the same bob I've seen over and over on their Instagram, just oddly sloppier and sadder. When I went back to work after having just washed my hair, the first reaction from a co-worker was, "Weren't you supposed to get your hair cut?" I think that sums it up. I went back to my old stylist in Texas over Thanksgiving, who gave me the cut I was looking for at less than half the price. Two stars back to Ello Pretty for the friendly staff and the beers. The service I received was a pixie cut and both times the back of my head was uneven. The salon offers a pixie cut service starting at $50 but if you want someone who is an advanced stylist you pay a higher amount. No pixie cut should cost higher than $50. Certainly the best repeated hair salon experience I've had. I even really liked my last stylist, who moved to Hawai'i, and Nicole and Jessica run an even better ship. I got a BIG haircut here my first visit--10-12 inches. Nicole spent 15-20 mins with me before ever cutting a hair. She went above and beyond by helping cut it so I could sell the hair, teaching me how to use different products to style my new 'do, and by taking pictures so I could show my best friend. Plus, the #1 most important part--my haircuts here (3 and counting) have been exceptional. Nicole clearly knows her subject matter, and with Jessica running the salon at a very courteous level, this place is THE place to get your hair cut. I wish I could give a better review. I asked for an ash blonde (I like a cool blonde) but ended up with grey hair. Like totally grey. With the lighting I couldn't tell it was that bad until I got home. I actually screamed when I saw myself in the mirror. I think the problem was that Kelly was booked with another customer and did the balayage on the other customer while I sat with a toner. My hair lifts super quickly, which Kelly wouldn't have known because I was new. So I do take some responsibility because I didn't speak up to say "hey, I'm still sitting here with toner and my hair tends to process super quickly" but I've never had to do that, ever, with any hairdresser. I also didn't wake up to the mirror and look super closely or I would have noticed earlier how bad it was. But the lighting in there really wasn't very good - it wasn't until I was in natural light that I could see how grey it was. Overall, I was disappointed and ended up going somewhere else to fix it. The new stylist told me that my hair had first been lifted too much (bleach left on way too long) and then the issue was compounded by leaving the toner on too long. But I should have spoken up more for myself. That's why I was generous and gave 3 stars and not 1. I also didn't feel very safe with the street parking but if you park in the actual parking lot, it is much better. read more
