I called to confirm the appointment and left a message, but did not receive a response. because of the strict cancellation policy I went in person. I never ever leave negative reviews anywhere but my experience with this salon needs to be aired: I made an appointment for a consult: 1 hour of my time, not including travel & in preparation for the texture treatment I was going to pay this salon to perform. All the details were discussed at this time with one of their stylists & an appointment was made - the earliest they could get me in was 5 weeks later. So, I waited. 5 weeks. Jump to the appointment 5 weeks later - I show up and the salon Owner, who I had the appointment with - was completely unprepared to provide the services I had pre-arranged [via an in-house consult] for and waited 5 weeks for. She had not put aside the time needed for the service and new information arose that was not brought up to me by the stylist at the consult 5 weeks earlier. Because the Owner had personal needs that were more important that afternoon than I was and was unprepared for my visit, the service was not provided. This wasted *several* hours of my time. No concession was offered. Reluctantly at this point, I allowed them to book me yet another appointment for the same service, made for one week later. One week later, I get a phone call *less than 24 hours before*, cancelling my appointment entirely, filling the short, rushed conversation with excuses as to why. No compensation or concession for their wasting of my time [& never managing to provide the service initially promised] - was offered in any way. Unbelievable. My beloved friend and hair stylist moved away. After doing some research I made an appointment with Cassie at Hairlab and I hit the jackpot. I came prepared with pictures and what I wish was different, and she talked me right through what she was going to do to get it for me. I'm sure she can handle the soft, long, pretty styles no problem but I have short jaw length hair and prefer things to look a little edgier and she totally got it. The shampoo and conditioner they use there smells amazing. It was more than I'm used to paying, but I've been spoiled by my friend until now and Cassie made me feel cool af. Worth every penny. Tips: I'm from southern Rhode Island so I'm a huge nerd about parking in big city Providence. I don't think there is designated parking so I just parked in the first spot i saw on the street and walked. Also you can't tip with a card there so be prepared with cash, check, or venmo! I've gone 5 years without a good haircut. The first thing I did when I got home was schedule a cut and color with co-owner, Riki. I've got to say, no where on Earth can I say too hairdresser, "do whatever" and be so blown away by what they do. She cut my hair enough to get rid of the frizzy inches at the end to reveal actually healthy hair! And I can still get it into a ponytail for work! The sneaky dark blue highlights she tucked in there are perfect. Enough to make me happy and still feel like myself but not to much to make my boss twitch. Haha! I have been in here three times since they opened. And I always leave better than I came in. Kirsten is one of the most knowledgeable and talented stylist that has ever done my hair. I come in with one vision (Sometimes a bit unrealistic) and she makes it happen or is very honest with me and gives me a style that is way better than I could've ever imagined. Went to Hairlab this week for a trim of my slightly-longer-than-shoulder, naturally curly hair. My cut was solid, nothing to wrote home about but nothing to complain about either, which is totally fine because I asked for a trim! ...and then was charged $70, the maximum they have listed on their website for a cut. I had no warning that it was going to cost so much and at no point did the stylist even suggest she was doing anything particularly special (ie the last time I got a cut this pricey, it was DevaCut or whatever that technique is called). Maybe this is on me for not asking ahead of time, but seriously? I was in and out in under 45 minutes and ended up with, once again, a *trim* that cost me $85 once tip was included. Seems like a spot to be avoided if you have curly hair, since that's the only reason I can possibly think of for being charged so much. read more

I went to Hairlab the day before yesterday for a cut and color and was overall very disappointed with the results. I'm not happy with how my hair looks: the cut is uneven and the color looks nothing like the inspiration pictures I showed the stylist--I asked for blue and purple blended in throughout my hair (no color-blocking) but instead my hair is 95% purple at the bottom and 100% blue on top; the edges of the color-block are soft, but it's definitely still a color-block. But what tripped me up the most was the price. The person I spoke to on the phone when I booked my appointment said that the cost of a color varied by person but was usually between $80 and $120. However, my bill for color was $218, almost double the highest price I was quoted. (Plus $55 for a not-great haircut. And on top of that, the dye got onto the back of the shirt I was wearing, so I will also have to buy a new shirt.) At no point during the appointment did my stylist mention the price being higher than what I was quoted on the phone, so I only learned about the higher price when I saw the bill, after my hair was already done. I was stunned and didn't know what to say, so I just paid and left without saying anything at the time, but thinking about it now I do feel somewhat taken advantage of. This was my first time getting my hair dyed, so advice for anyone who is in a similar situation: double-check what price you will actually be paying *before* you book anything, and be extremely clear with your stylist about what you are looking for! I should note that my stylist was very kind and friendly, as was everyone else at the salon while I was there, so I really enjoyed my experience getting my hair done -- just not the end result or price tag. read more

I wouldn't consider myself a "hair person". In fact, I hate hair which is why I pay to get it cut. Not so much for the style, but just to see that damn hair removed and thrown in the trash. That being said, I am very happy with the haircuts I have received from Jenna. I went here for my wedding cut and my wife didn't leave me at the altar so she must have done something right. She is helpful with suggestions (because I don't know what I want) and patient (willing to iterate through multiple lengths). I was getting tired of my thick shoulder-length wavy/curly hair and decided to get it chopped down to a pixie. Very nerve-racking! I made an appointment with Riki, and I was not disappointed. After a good amount of consultation as to what I wanted, as well as a generous amount of time in the chair, I ended up with a cut that works with my hair in its natural texture or straightened. Would not recommend for blond highlights or keratin express blowout. I've been getting my hair professionally for 15 years and have a lot of experience going from brunette to blond, and with keratin treatments. I requested a full-head highlights (no balayage) in a cool tone. Half way through my appointment I was told we'd do highlights next time and that it was going to be a more warm balayage since it would take more than one appointment. I ended up with orange/red hair that was uneven and fried. They later blamed the color on the keratin, yet I'm not sure what treatment they used on my hair because it was very dry and frizzy. The salon offered to fix the color (and redo the keratin at a later date). It looked better until I washed my hair the next day and apparently the toner. I ended up going to a different salon that fixed my color, and oddly enough my hair felt so much softer after their highlights than after the keratin. The people are nice at this salon, however it was an expensive visit that I ended up having to get fixed at another salon. read more

I wasn't going to leave a bad review at first because the initial offense wasn't that big of a deal. It was, however, enough for me to cancel my first appointment, which I made because of the number of glowing reviews -- Maddie, the assistant and junior stylist, misspelled my name despite me spelling it out for her over the phone, to the point of it seeming intentional: maybe she took it personally when I had requested Jenna to be my stylist instead of her since I wanted someone more senior to work on my hair, I'm not quite sure. Regardless, I figured if they can't even pay attention to spell my name right, I really don't want them handling something like my hair. I'm quite fussy about my hair and don't want the risk of living through a nightmare while shelling out city prices for a cut. So I canceled the appointment as soon as I could and booked with another salon. What really shocked me and prompted this review is when Jenna the hairstylist called me back. I was relieved at first, thinking she might apologize for the (albeit small) mistake and say it wasn't representative of the care they take with each of their customers, and maybe that could have convinced me to come back for the appointment. Instead, she angrily demanded that I pay a cancellation fee, citing their 24 hour cancellation policy. Unbelievable. I understand that they have a business to run and it's completely fair to ask for a 24 hour cancellation fee if it's simply the customer changing their mind about their schedule; however, (a) this could have been avoided if they had paid attention in the first place, and (b) there was no opportunity to cancel any sooner even though I found out 3 days before my appointment -- my appointment was made on a Saturday for the following Tuesday. I called on Sunday when the confirmation text showed my name egregiously misspelled, only to realize they are closed on Sunday and Monday. And since their text confirmation system doesn't allow you to cancel over text, only by phone, I called to cancel first thing on Tuesday morning. Then they try to get on my case for not cancelling on time and want to charge me a fee and argue with me over the phone about how stupid it is for me to cancel for a misspelled name. Sorry but I'm not going to have my hair handled by people who don't pay attention to the details when paying attention to details *is* a hair stylist's job. The owner's responses to the other 1-star reviews just confirms how poorly this salon handles issues if you ever have a complaint for mistakes *they* make. They're nice and everything's great until they're not. Bad attitude all around, no apologies. Not sure if this level of service is typical for a small town like Providence but where I'm from (SF and New York) this treatment of customers wouldn't last a day. read more

Once I find a stylist who works for me, I'm afraid to switch it up because that means there's a chance someone might mess up my hair! I'm a little picky :) When I moved from California to Rhode Island for college, I had to leave my beloved salon behind. So, I was on the hunt for a salon/stylist that I could stick with and really trust here in Providence. Riki has been my stylist for over a year now and I can't say enough good things about her! I have actually followed her from her previous salons after she moved, because I couldn't see myself trusting anyone else to do my color and cut! I've had nothing but great experiences at Hairlab. I alternate between a partial highlight and a base break every 5-6 weeks (and I throw in a cut every so often). Riki introduced me to the free-form highlighting technique a while back, and I absolutely love it--I won't be going back to foil highlights anytime soon :) She's always very receptive to the sort of style I'm looking for, and at the same time, I feel more than willing to take her advice and guidance when it comes to my hair color or cut. She really knows what she's doing and based on what I've seen, the other stylists seem very talented as well! Reached out to the salon to schedule a revisit to have the errors in the cut corrected and stunned that the stylist (Jenna) blamed my child for wiggling about. I attribute this to a lack of customer service training - but nonetheless the Providence area is full of salons that have talented stylists and a strong commitment to customer service. My initial vibe from HairLab was good. I'm a newcomer to Providence and the salon has a great location, beautiful decor, and is very well reviewed overall. The experience itself? Honestly subpar. I've worn a pixie cut for the past 8 years and due to travels for schooling and additional training after graduation, I've done my fair share of communicating with stylists in new cities about the cut I would like. Usually the new stylist and I have a pretty extensive conversation prior to the cut, I show a few pictures of what I want, they might ask a few follow-ups as the cut progresses, and results go swimmingly. For this first-time visit here I brought photos of myself taken a few days after my most recent haircut one month prior and the stylist and I talked at length on what I was looking for(essentially a clean up of what had grown out since my last cut). However, she made me a little uneasy as the haircut began. In the course of conversation, she stated that she "wasn't a great communicator" (okay. .. ?), which perhaps should have been my cue to exit. She asked a fairly continuous stream of nonspecific questions about the haircut as she progressed, to which I answered to the best of my ability. I should have taken her comment to greater heart, as the end result was a shaved head with a two-razor on the left side of my head and a side bang along my forehead (which is what I HAD asked for) and a short "bowl cut"(above my earline) on the right hand side and around to the back of my head; the "bowl" ended abruptly with the remainder of that portion of my head a two-razor shave (this was all something I'd definitively NOT asked for). Once I'd realized what had happened I asked her to blend in the abrupt bowl cut into the remainder as best she could, but she'd honestly taken so much hair off what she could do was minimal. She slapped some product on it and said, "That's better!" (Spoiler alert: It wasn't; half my head still looked like the end of an olympic ski jump). I was then charged 45 dollars because the cut "took extra time because I was a new consult". The stylist did let me know that it would likely grow out to some extent in two weeks and she could blend the abrupt portion better at another appointment. I called back to schedule an appointment in that time frame, was told they'd call me back. They did not. It wasn't the worst haircut I've ever had, but it certainly wasn't the best. But it was a pretty subpar experience for a cut that was over 50 dollars with the tip. So, meh. I got a haircut that I expressly didn't like/ask for and made this known, was charged 45 dollars anyway + a promise to "fix it" in 2 weeks that I called to schedule without a returned call back. The entire experience left me with a sour feeling about this place. I've found another stylist in the area who does a fantastic job for a better price point. read more

I don't know how I haven't rated HairLab yet!? A friend recommended Cassie to me about a year And a half ago, and I haven't been to anyone else since. Cassie is talented, skilled, and super knowledgeable. I trust her implicitly, and often go in without a clear idea of what I want. I know that if I tell her to do what she thinks is best I will leave with my hair looking fantastic. I have never left an appointment with her for a cut and color less than thrilled at the results.
