I found Claudia Curl while looking for a hair salon that would understand my frizzy, fine hair with questionable curl potential (depending on weather, mood, and alignment of planets), and was very happy that I did! My stylist was very helpful in both her assessment of my hair and tips for keeping it healthier, which I very much appreciated. She was quick but meticulous, and talked through a variety of options for ensuring the best possible curl. The cost was very reasonable and I was quite happy with my cut! The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that it took me a while to get in touch with them - I wound up calling several times and playing phone tag for a few days, but once I reached them they were quick to fit me in! Having once upon a time loved the magic that happened here, I have to update my review as that sparkle has left the building. I was thrilled with my initial cut, but it all went downhill from there. The stylist who did the job no longer works at Claudia Curl, so my review had to change. The service at Claudia Curl isn't what you'd expect from a salon on Hope Street. Claudia herself isn't that warm or accommodating, and operates the shop with a 'not my problem' attitude. What the stylists do is their own business, and Claudia makes no exception to that, which you just cannot do in this industry. The fact that the cast of stylists is ever-revolving is a dead give-away. I wish there was a great retail section or stellar service I could recommend, but no such luck. I'd been going to Claudia Curl for years, but lately, something seems remiss. Every time I've gone in the past couple years, there was a new staff member cutting my hair. While I'm all for experimentation and trying new things, when it comes to hair, I want to know who's going to be working on me. Here's a typical phone conversation from anytime in the past two years: Me: Hi, I'd like to book an appointment with Michael/other Michael/Deanna/Kevin/ect. Receptionist: I'm sorry, but s/he no longer works here. Would you like an appointment with *insert unknown stylist here*? Me: How about Claudia or Dee? Receptionist: They're booking out appointments starting sometime next year if you want to wait. Me: *Sigh* Claudia and Dee are always booked, because if you're lucky enough to get an appointment with either, you can be sure your hair will look fabulous. But I'm not a months in advance pre-planner, and I don't do standing appointments because I'll end up having to change them later. I usually book an appointment when the seasons finally change, or I see a really cool haircut I wish to covet. Overall, all the other factors are in place. The vibe there is pretty good, the decoration is rad, all is clean and sparkly, the music played is pretty sweet, and the stylists are always friendly. Over the years, the prices (or is that inflation?) seem to have crept up, but not by an inordinate amount. 2nd time at this place after fellow Yelpers led me here and I couldn't be happier. The first woman I went to left the salon soon after and I could've followed her, but I also wanted to see what else the salon had to offer. I just got back from a much needed cut and color and it was a relaxing, stress free and satisfying visit with Kevin. I was welcomed at the door and my coat and scarf were hung up for me along with a sincere inquiry to whether I wanted something to drink or anything else. I was then promptly escorted to a chair where Kevin has a nice consolation with me about what I wanted to do and what he thought would look good on me. I was happy to be talking to someone who was able to give my some suggestions within and just outside my comfort zone. I left an hour and a half later with a new color and 4 inches cut off my hair. My hair feels silky and light and I love it. Kevin was easy to talk to and made me feel good about my hair, the color choice, and the cut.. All of the staff seemed friendly and if they were not working on a customer were engaged in cleaning the salon - a good sign. Claudia actually was sitting down next to one customer as they were seated under the heaters and was engaged in conversation. It's nice to give business to a place where you know you'll leave happy and you know who you're investing your money in. Prior to moving out of Prov, I was a little worried about who would cut my hair. So I had to have Claudia cut my hair. Even in the west, I wish she could cut my hair! I met Claudia back when I got tatted by her hubby [who by the way is an amazing tattoo artist as well] Wolfie was not even 1. Danny recommended her to me because he was moving to NM. Somehow I ended up at her shop when she first opened. And I never let anyone else cut my hair but her until I moved to lalaland. Sweetest lady. Amazing mom. Thanks for everything. Haven't had the others work on my hair, but they're all good and as friendly as Claudia. I always made appointments so I'm not sure how the walk ins are. I started going to her right when she opened years ago when my hair was to my waist and not maintained..to today, when I come down from Boston for her to cut my hair into cute little snappy do's. Her prices are so reasonable, and she does a wonderful job. I think Claudia is amazingly talented, i love her as a person and as a stylist. No, I don't tend to do anything too crazy with my hair, but she always listens to me and seems to be able to get me my a little out of my comfort zone to a place where I always am pleased when I look at in the mirror after..."you're right..i love it"... If I was writing this review a few months ago, I would have given Claudia Curl five stars. However, when I called this past weekend to make an appointment, I was informed that the stylist I've been going to regularly is no longer working there. The girl on the phone acted as if she didn't even know who I was talking about at first, and I had to repeat my stylist's name three times before I got an answer. I was upset, since I felt extremely lucky to find a fantastic stylist (Kevin) after moving to the Providence area from Boston. Not only did I get a perfect cut every time, but it was about half the price of the salon I used to frequent in Cambridge! After reading some of the other reviews here, I'm starting to understand what the problem is. There is no lack of talent at Claudia Curl, but there has always been an uncomfortable vibe in the salon, like the stylists don't get along or they are unhappy working there. I'm not going to speculate about what the root of the problem is, but I will say that people don't like going to a salon where they have a new stylist each time. You need to be able to depend on your stylist and know you'll always be happy with your hair cut. It's a shame, since this place has the potential to be an outstanding salon. I've been going to this salon for a while now. The decor is really fun (gotta love the pig picture and octopus tentacles on the wall) and the stylists working there definitely match the vibe. They all seem to get along and work hard to give their clients what they want. I also really like the products they sell, they smell great and work well. I always have Erica do my hair, and she's amazing. She was actually recommended to me by my boyfriend and does great men's hairstyles. Her specialty is doing crazy colors. In person I've seen her do some pretty incredible color jobs from rainbow mermaid hair to ashy blonde highlights to super subtle dark burgundy. She really knows her stuff and when I finally took the plunge and got a color job from her, I couldn't have been more satisfied with how it turned out. She really knows her products and technique and is always trying to take classes to learn more skills and tools. She's also just super fun to talk to. I can't imagine having anyone else do my hair. read more

Everyone at the salon is fun and nice. Kate does a wonderful job with my crazy thick and semi curly hair. They go out of their way to make enough time for each client. The pricing is very competitive and the results are fantastic. They do social media contests as well and are in a adorable area. I have been going to the same hairdresser in CT for the past six years so I was nervous trying a new place. Kate Scott was my hairdresser and I admit I was a little nervous because her technique was a little different then what my other hair dresser had done. However, I must say I absolutely love my hair. She was extremely thorough and took her time with each step, even though my hair was extra thick, and more than she anticipated. She was extremely friendly and got along great during the time she did my hair. The cut is great and the color is very natural, which is what I was going for. A week later and my hair is still silky smooth. I will definitely be going to Kate again. And on top of the excellent job, you cannot go wrong with the prices here! read more

I love my curly, healthy beautiful hair. I usually have it just above my shoulder, but a horrible stylist in Boston chopped it all off last summer so I let it grow for nearly 7 months before it was time to get something done. I have had such trouble finding a good salon in Providence or anyone who can cut curly hair, so I thought I was safe when I found out about Claudia Curl. I called without wanting any stylist in particular because I figured they could all cut curly hair. Seems logical, right? I went in February and got no length taken off (because it was still growing from the previous disaster), but just got it styled with some layers and an angle in the front. This was fine. Nothing to write home about, but fine. I went again last week to get about an inch taken off. I asked for my hair to be cut slightly shorter in the back and longer in the front which is a style I had for a long time (but not at the moment) and was easily performed by every stylist I'd been to. I am very trusting of people cutting my hair because my hair rarely looks bad. But when someone gives me a bad haircut, that's it for me. She started cutting my hair on the right side and when she had gotten half way around my neck I mentioned that it was shorter than I wanted it and asked if she was going to make sure it was longer in the front. Her response made me feel like she had forgotten about that part of my description, a very important part if you ask me. She also said something that no girl with curly hair wants to hear when you have scissors to her head: "I'm cutting it when it is straight, but I guess it shortens up as it dries." Oh my goodness. She clearly did not know how to cut curly hair and thus was cutting at least half an inch more than I requested. She also made a comment about how thick my hair is making it sound like she was unsure how to cut thick hair too. Geesh. She then cut the other side of my hair and I went home. I should mention that I was her last client of the day, leaving the salon around 5:45pm. When I got home I couldn't believe my eyes. My hair was NOTICEABLY uneven on either side of my head. I guess when I said that I wanted it longer she went ahead and left it longer on the left side. That doesn't even make sense. I could tell from running my fingers around the back of my head that the style I wanted of shorter in the back longer in the front, was missing. In all my life, this is the second time I've cried over my hair. I am in no way nit picky about my hair. It's curly, so if a piece or two is out of place it looks fine and having all the pieces be the same length is never something I worry about, but this was so bad I could feel it hitting my left shoulder and not hitting my right shoulder. That was just too much for me. I called the salon immediately, maybe ten minutes after I'd left, and knew the owner was the there. I told her that my hair was uneven and she must have not understood the caliber so she told me the stylist had gone home and I would have to come back the next afternoon. She seemed like she didn't care in the least. Like I was bothering her with my hair trouble that her salon had caused. I went back the next day and the stylist was very apologetic and did her best to fix it. She cut it so at least my hair is even. Still not the style I want and definitely not the length I want. She gave me 1/2 off my next haircut, but there's only a 10% chance I'm going back. So now my hair is too short and I despise the cut. I decided to just wear it in a ponytail until it grows a bit because I really dislike it. That's just sad. I paid $40 (+$5 tip) for a haircut that I hate and have to wear my hair in a ponytail! Lesson learned: I'm only getting my hair cut in the wintertime when stylist are less apt to chop it all off. I really dislike writing these bad reviews, but I know how hard it is to find a stylist who can cut curly hair and how helpful other peoples' comments are. I'm sure Claudia Curl has stylist who can do wonders with curly hair, but you should ask for them. My stylist, Kate, was so so nice and was one of the only stylists I've meet that I really enjoyed talking to, so I'm sad that it didn't work out. read more

i've decided to give claudia curl 3 out of 5 stars since i wasn't in love with the final result of my hair...don't get me wrong claudia will do whatever you want to your hair..its just her technique in cutting hair isn't what i expected it to be...i thought it would be superb but it wasn't...it was just ok i guess..i'm a super picky person when it comes to getting a haircut...and the thought of paying $40 for something i wasn't in love with, wasn't really worth it the place itself is very unique, its an independent own salon...they even offer tea, water or coffee, which i think is pretty cool for a mom-dad shop kind of style. read more

I have lived in major cities in the U.S and find it so difficult to find a great hairdresser. I moved to Providence a few years ago and could not find a great hairdresser..and an awesome environment until I met Claudia. I don't think I will ever trust anyone else with my cut and color. My whole group of friends go to her, one of whom Claudia did her hair for her wedding. She looked amazing!! I highly recommend going to this salon. I feel like the whole staff is fantastic and that I would be comfortable with anyone. The best is that Claudia listens and she is always up for a change, I never feel bored. read more

Last week I went back to Claudia Curl to have my hair colored. I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted besides "dark", so I explained a few colors ideas to Kate (dark brown with reddish brown/burgundy, I believe were my exact words). My hair looks better than I thought it could! I've dyed it myself a few times and it always looked fine, but this is just specTACular. I cannot rave enough about the expert work Kate did. The color looks great with my skin tone; any cold tones wash me out, so I now have a rich chocolatey/burgundy/somethingy color that is just magnificent. This is the first salon I've found where I'm consistently happy with the work and how I'm being treated. So yay to Claudia Curl! Go there and get your hair did. I have heard great things about the other stylists as well (I just haven't been to them to qualify), but I can definitely say Kate's work is incredible! read more
