We have had Selena for all of our visits, which is really nice that it's the same person going to your apt. each time and not a different person who doesn't know your pet. The price tag is well pretty on par with other pet sitting services in the area as I researched ahead of time. I've found that they go out of their way to answer emails or calls quickly, which is especially important with last minute trips. Their online booking is pretty straightforward and easy to navigate. It would be great if they got a phone app, but the web version is fine especially for a small business. Highly recommend if you are looking for petcare for your dog or cat. They are in Cap Hill, Brookland, and NoMa.

I selected Pets on the Hill, a small service, rather than larger services in the area because I wanted my dog to have consistency (i.e. a friendly relationship with 1-2 walkers). Initially this was the case and Kerith, his primary walker, provided text messages about his walks. Over time, I stopped receiving updates about his walks and there was no consistency in who was walking him. On my last walk request--which was scheduled through Kerith and delegated to another walker due to Kerith going on vacation--my dog was left and no one ever came to walk him. Kerith did not notify me of a schedule conflict at any time. When I came home and discovered that my dog had not been walked, I texted Kerith asking for my keys to be returned (so that I could use them to secure a new service) and she did not respond for more than 48 hours. When she did respond, she simply said that she was "sad" that my dog needed to go out and was not attended to rather than apologizing for his neglect or the complete lack of communication. Rather than returning my keys (a small consolation for a bad experience), she directed me to get them myself. If you are searching for professionalism and reliability this is not the service to use. Regardless of accommodations for personal travel or time off, there is no excuse for not communicating. Lack of concern for animals who have been entrusted in your care is also completely inexcusable for a company with animal care as its primary mission.

What a strange journey it's been with Charlotte, one that has unfortunately ended with her calling…read moreme tonight after 8p to say that she couldn't be our cat sitter over my (repeated) request to her to not turn off light switches to external lights while she was watching our cats. (See pictures of text exchange). Charlotte keeps what I would consider very non-standard hours (AM visits to our home range from 10a on the early side to after Noon at times). PM visits were nearly always after 10p (often times near or after midnight), and per the video our security cameras would capture, mostly consisted of her turning on our TV and sitting on our couch after feeding our cats. Twice in two years I had to text her to come on our first day of being gone as she wrote the wrong dates down in her schedule. But, overall, the cats survived (they're cats, after all), so we put up with all of these oddities instead of finding someone new. Apparently my request to her to not turn off external light switches (which was clarified and confirmed over the phone with her to obviously only mean external lights) after her doing so led to an entire freezer of food spoiling in our garage was just too much(?). To top it all off, she ended the conversation with a catty (see what I did there?) comment of "good luck finding a cat sitter for Christmas," as if she wasn't aware that this is a booming business line in DC with many qualified professionals. Like I said, what a strange journey, indeed.

When we got our new puppy, I knew we needed the extra hands while we were gone most of the day. Enter Fairytales. From the moment you meet Megan, you can tell she is deeply passionate about the care of animals. She cares about their wellbeing just as much as the owner! She's not just a service provider, she's a godsend to our family and new pup! From field trips, long walks, south block pup cups...Megan has given our new pug amazing socialization and enrichment. He is thriving as a new city family dog and we have Megan to thank for most of that, continually looking out for him, updating us with photos and videos of his fun-filled days, and her extraordinary effort to adjust him to all different types of dogs and people! What a difference a day (with Atlas) makes! After just one visit with Thomas my puppy is remarkably…read morebetter behaved! I have a 8 month mini golden doodle. She's incredibly smart and before finding Atlas she was pretty well behaved but I had sort of hit a wall with her undesirable behavior (barking, separation anxiety, jumping up on people). I knew she needed better instruction than my partner and I were giving her, but knowing how social my dog is, a group puppy class didn't seem ideal. Luckily I met Atlas owner, Danny, and immediately I felt the right vibe. He seemed to have a training approach based in dog psychology, and I knew I was gonna have to think like my very intelligent dog if I was going to effectively communicate with her. I then met with Thomas (who I thoroughly enjoyed on a personal level too!) for only 2 hours and we went over a lot... all sorts of tips and tricks and it helped me to understand the overall philosophy of dog training. I was so busy going over every training mistake i had made, that I didn't even notice that Thomas was efficiently correcting her and my dog began to be on her best behavior... quietly cuddled next to me. Later on that night the change became more apparent when my partner was also like "um did you notice how obedient puppy is being?" We began joking that it's like we brought over a military school recruiter and now she's like "I'll be good! I'll be good!" We're not 100% sure which tip that Thomas gave us was so magical (but I suspect correcting the pack hierarchy was a major point) but it worked! Barking has turned into a low growl or nothing at all, she's stopped pestering us for fetch in favor of waiting for "play time", the results are kinda mind blowing! But the best part I never saw coming. Until seeing the after effects of Thomas I didn't realize how my stressed my puppy was. So now everyone in the house is happier! This is one of those business I love to support! Great people doing great work!

Once I brought the issue to their attention, instead of correcting my account, they tried to assign blame on my card, even though they charged the very same card fourteen weekdays in a row after the alleged problem. In addition, I never received an explanation as to why some days I was charged more than others, for the very same service.  All in all, Atas Doghouse is a convenient, affordable option for doggy daycare, but you will want to be diligent about checking the charges to your credit card frequently.
