I checked in on Yelp and you get a free homemade doggy treat! So awesome! The store itself is a dog lover's paradise with every type of treat, toy, and dog amenity. It's well maintained and super clean and they even have a dog bakery with pastries. WHAT? So awesome! read more

Excellent store with knowledgeable and helpful staff, great selection of products, and a variety of activities and samples for your pets. We came in and learned that they offer a free puppy play time, and free samples of frisbees, snacks, and training pads. They also offered a broad range of toys and treats that kept our teething puppy happy and their staff provided us with some fantastic recommendations. The biggest drawback to Metro Mutts is hat it is not the most accessible place and that as a boutique, it is priced well above other stores or Amazon. All the same, it's worth a visit. read more

Very sad the SE location closed as that was the location closer to my home. I have visited the H Street location though, and although small, they pack in a lot of products! My main review is to update that I still love the cat sitting service offered through Metro Mutts. It's super easy to schedule in advance online. And the best part is the online pet journals are emailed to you as soon as they're created. The sitters include what was done on the visits (fed, changed litter, picked up mail, etc), how long they stayed, and writes a personal note about how the visit went. And sometimes they'll upload a photo too! Such piece of mind for nervous pet parents! My past vacation I had a flight cancelled and rescheduled for the next day. I called Metro Mutts asked for a last minute cat sit and they were on it no problem and with only a very minimal fee (seriously, just a couple extra bucks). I've been using them for over 4 years now and they've always been wonderful--highly recommended! read more

I LOVE this cute pet shop so much. Sometimes when I'm walking past I will go inside just to browse around and look at the awesome stuff they have or buy another cute accessory for my cats. The resident cat, Romeo makes the visit much more enjoyable. He is friendly and affectionate and loves being petted. Customer service is TOP NOTCH! Love Metro Mutts dog walking service and staff at the store. The walking service is super attentive and on my first time using the service, they were very understanding when a friend "borrowed' my dog, had an accident with her (don't even get me started), and Metro Mutts had to cancel the remainder of their services. On the second time around, they now had to care for my pup who was bandaged and wearing a cone, but did a fabulous job of making her feel comfortable, happy and cared for while I was away. The part I love the most is that they leave detailed reports on how your pup did on her walks, her eating behavior and any skills you are working on with training. I am pretty particular as I love my pup and she can admittedly be a handful (border collie, lab mix--she's got energy!). As for the store, the staff is great (I go to the SE location). The prices are a bit steep and they are working on the loyalty program (the printed bucks are easy to lose-- need a card!), but I am somewhat understanding given the rent prices on 8th St. Given the convenience, its worth a few extra bucks for treats and puppy necessities. Wow! A great pet store on H Street! I don't have to leave the neighborhood anymore for cat food, snacks and toys. They have a really excellent selection of dog and cat products. The super nice guy (sorry I forgot your name already!) is so helpful and so knowledgeable about not just the products they sell but also the products that they chose not to sell. Really great store--great products, friendly people, and for me, right in the neighborhood! I love that I can get the really high quality, natural, no-grain foods for my cats there (I used to go online and pay ridiculous shipping charges), and they also have a nice selection of toys and things. Also, it seems like they have a really nice social conscience--work with rescues, etc., which makes me feel good. My one quibble is that the store is a bit too doggie focused. at first I thought it was really just marketing--the name, the website, and the window display with lots of doggy stuffed animalscould lead you to believe this is only a dog store. For cats, the basics of food, toys or litter are taken care of nicely. .Still, I was just in looking for a cat carrier to take my kitties on car trips--mostly just back and forth from the vet. While they have several rather fancy ones that are appropriate for dogs, going to work, with little tents, etc., and some larger, more simple ones for dogs, they had nothing that was really good for the average cat's needs. They offered to order, which was nice. Still, I just think as dog people they may need a cat consultant. I'd be willing to serve :-). read more

I've been only once there an it is enough. On the positive side: it carries a high quality, difficult to find, cat food brand that I like. In fact, that was the whole reason I when there in the first place. I live in Germantown, MD but work in DC. For reasons I am not going into, I run out of the cat food I feed one of my cats and couldn't buy it where I shop normally, Whole Pet Central, in Rockville. I called two other pet stores in DC before I found what I was looking for in Metro Mutts. The person who answered the phone kindly offered to separate the 12 cans of cat food and keep them behind the counter until I could pick them up that day. I arrived to the store after work around 7:00pm, looked around the store and it is tiny. The aisles are pretty narrow. Not a place to hang out but just buy what you need and head out. I saw some overpriced toys (and yes, I bough two) but that is expected given the location and the size of the store, and other good quality, grain free pet food. The reason I'll never set foot on that store again is another story. After I left the store with my purchase and arrived at the bus stop, it occurred to me that not once I even glanced at the content of the bag the boy attending the store handed me over with the cans of cat food to count them. Pretty stupid of me, but I was trying to get home to a decent hour (which didn't happen). One can was missing. At $2.94 per can I decided to go back to the store and get the one was missing. I did and I actually found the manager who was the person I spoke earlier on the phone. He couldn't believe it. He said that he counted the cans personally. In the meantime the employee brought the missing can immediately. The manager gave me a look like I was trying to steal one can from him but he still handed it over. I do believe the manager was right and he put all the cans in the bag. What I think happened was that the employee took one can from the bag to scanned and entered the quantity by hand and even by mistake ..or not, took the can and placed it some place other than the bag. I wasn't paying much attention to what he was doing since I was looking around. The boy probably didn't want to fess up to the manager and that is why he promptly retrieved the missing can. Going to that store was stressful enough. I haven't rode a bus in years, the neighborhood is a mismatch of weir people walking down the street. The whole time I was clutching my purse to my chest to be honest. I am not looking forward to go the neighborhood or that store. read more

I just moved here a few weeks ago from San Diego, CA and I was worried about where I was going to get some food-allergy-friendly food for my adorable lil shar-pei mix. After a bit of researching, I decided to check out Metro Mutts. This place is PERFECT! The store is quite small but they pack in QUITE the variety of high-quality pet food. And their prices are so reasonable, in fact, they seemed cheaper than most places. At check-out, the owner introduced herself and told me to come back if the food I purchased didn't work out so she could make different recommendations. I'm actually moving pretty far away from Metro Mutts but I plan on making the trek there to get my pup's food and toys. And the icing on the cake? They have a store-cat, Romeo, that is hilarious and feisty. Chased my 42-lb dog around the store, hilarious! read more

ABOVE & BEYOND!!! It's a Friday night and feel compelled and almost inspired to write a review on this Pet Store...I know, my life is way too exciting, HA-HA! Anyways, being brand new to the area we were excited to find that Metro Mutts was so close to our place...definitely within walking distance (as long as you aren't buying heavy dog food of course). I was a little upset when I initially heard they didn't carry the dog food I use. However, they quickly reassured me they could just as easily special order it at no extra cost....as long as my order is in by Wednesday every week it will show up on Friday and I can just go and pick it up..perfect!!! The first time I did this my hubby picked it up and he had nothing but good things to say about the store. I was going to wait to write a review on this place until I had a chance to visit, but I just couldn't wait any longer after tonight.... Metro Mutts was my saving grace this evening! Making this story as short as possible, I ended up leaving a lot of my extra dog food at my mother's house this past weekend, and let's just say she doesn't exactly live right around the corner! Anyways, having a lack of transportation this week & working longs hours, I figured I could just as easily order the dog food through Amazon. Because of my poor planning and forgetfulness with leaving the dog food at my mother's house, I was okay with paying the extra $$$ for expedited shipping. Well my last minute plan ended up failing miserably!!! I would be out of food by Friday night and the delivery would not get here till Tuesday b/c it was delayed...Just My Luck!!!!!! In comes Metro Mutts to the rescue!!! I called Metro Mutts right away to see if they could put through a last minute order for me and have it shipped to my place instead of the store because of my lack of transportation this week. The lady I spoke to (Kelly??) mentioned she lived in the area and didn't mind dropping it off on her way home from work that night...WOW....really??? Kelly (I think that's your name) YOU ROCK!!!! Sure enough, she arrived with the dog food, which made me super happy and my dog even happier!! I met two of the owners at a happy hour supporting local arts programming. They were both enthusiastic and seemed like conscientious business owners. Lee told me all about one of their pet food vendors that is made locally and out of high quality ingredients. So I ran by the store today to check it out and pick up a bag of food. While there Lee's wife recommended some of their catnip toys and she was spot on. I've never seen Fritz play with a toy that long and he was in heaven. I'm definitely going back! read more

This review is about their dog-walking services. I have been so happy with the Metro Mutts service! First of all, Darnita is very response on email and has been able to schedule extra evening and morning visits on short (1-2 day) notice. My dogwalker leaves long detailed notes, which are so much fun to read when I get home. She also seems to care just as much about giving my Golden Retriever some "TLC" as she calls it as she does walking him. Their standard practice is also to refresh your dog's water, which is nice. The only thing I wish Metro Mutts had is grooming service! Overall, very pleased with the service, attention to detail, and level of responsiveness. read more

I was amazed at how knowledgeable the staff were, they provided a ton of detailed information about the variety of food they offered and even have bags ready made with samples for your pet to try. A big plus for me was the selection of made in the USA toys! They also appear committed to selling local products as some of the food varieties were from a small company in Maryland. I stopped by this store a few years back, and let me tell you - it has ALWAYS left a positive impression. I was SO EXCITED when I found out there was one RIGHT next to my new place on H Street! At first chance, I took my sweet dog Nya over to make sure they had our her food (they totally did - GREAT selection!). She's NOT a city dog...and was so scared by the time we got there she was shaking uncontrollably. The SWEETEST girls were working and came out from behind the counter to introduce themselves. They gave her lots of hugs and calm attention - such a WARM welcome to our new home! By the time we left, she was feeling a LOT better - thanks to the fantastic staff that evening. Now, Nya gets SO excited to get in that door! They remember her, and you can really tell they care a great deal. Tonight, she became a TRUE city dog with the purchase of her new poncho...LOL - it even has rubber duckies. OMG! To die for. See! The smiling girl behind the counter just wanted to make sure she didn't get wet on the way home! Seriously, this store is the BEST. They have all the natural products I'm looking for, lots of new interesting toys, but people who CARE keep me coming back. I was supposed to replenish my dog's dry food supply all weekend, but somehow forgotten to do so until 3:00pm on a Sunday. While I used to shop at Super Petz in Annandale for their competitively priced dog food and their good selection of grain frees, I was feeling too lazy to drive 30 miles round trip from a bag of dog food. 2 minutes on Yelp brought me to Metro Mutts, a place that I could have walked to, but chose not to as I was planning on buying a 30lb bag of food. The store was not very large, but definitely had some unique knick knacks and there was a strong theme of healthy, organic foods and treats. I bought a 30lb bag of Taste of the Wild for ~~45 + tax, which I felt was very competitively priced! The staff was also very friendly. I will definitely make a return visit here, and recommend it if you are looking for health conscious items for your dog. read more

We use Metro Mutts for their dog walking services and couldn't be happier. Our two dogs get a half hour walk each weekday afternoon. The staff always arrive during the right time frame and spends the whole half hour with our dogs. I know this because our security system charts when people come and go, but also because our neighbors have commented on how diligent and friendly the walkers are. Jackie and her staff are very accessible by phone or email. They always respond quickly to my emails and will give you advance notice when there's going to be a substitute walker or change in the walking schedule. I also appreciate that Jackie has a background in dog training and has taken the time to talk with us about our specific training practices. One of our favorite aspects of the service are the 'Mutt Diary' notes that the walker leaves each day. These notes let you know how the walk went which can be really helpful if you're training your dogs, monitoring their health, etc. Depending on the walker, they can be really hilarious too. read more

I love Metro Mutts! I live equidistant between the Capitol Hill and H Street locations, and have gotten great service at both, but the H Street location has easier-to-find parking and a larger selection. Staff have always been incredibly friendly to me and my pups (when they accompany me). We always feel welcome, and the store's stock never disappoints. I'm also a frequent user of Metro Mutts' dog walking service, which has to be the best in the city. They are incredibly responsive, leave detailed notes and text me with updates if something goes awry (I have one dog who can be a bit shy with new people). I always feel comfortable knowing my pets are in their care. All in all this is a uniquely great business in the DC area, particularly if you live in Cap Hill or northeast, and I highly recommend the store, the staff and the dog walkers. read more

Love this place!! I'm new in town and when I got a dog, she came with some fancy bags of food. Not wanting to switch her diet, I searched around for a pet store that carried it. Luckily Metro Mutts was just two blocks away! I went in with my Great Dane and they immediately helped me find the brand I was looking for. And since they didn't have the puppy formula, the awesome guy that helped me gave me free sample bags of the puppy formula! So awesome and always friendly! Great store! read more

House side of the Hill finally has a decent pet supply store! Everyone is so friendly, including the resident cat (I think his name is Charlie?). He's always willing to help you test out those cat toys before you take them home. The place is small but not much they can do about that and they fill it as full as they can without being too cluttered and overcrowded. They are more geared for dogs, which makes no sense with the boss being an actual cat! But they have all the basics you need for your felines and the cat foods are excellent quality - the food actually has meat! I haven't bought fish supplies at this location and I'm not sure if they even have fish supplies come to think of it. I have bought frozen worms at their SE location but haven't needed any from my local yet. My onliest complaint...regret? wish?... is that they don't do any grooming. They do have pet sitting services though which I fully intend to take advantage of soon. I think I read someone elses review that said they'll even water your plants for you so I'm hoping they'll feed the fish as well. :) read more

Hipster Pet Heaven! This place has some great stuff and a good verity of pet food. My cat is on a total grain-free/soy free diet so it's hard to find cat food, but Metro Mutts has a few option. We love the Metro Mutts store, and especially love the dog walking service -- both get 5 starts from us! First, the store -- the employees are exceptional, friendly, knowledgeable and clearly love dogs. We love bringing our dogs into the store and find it so convenient that dogs are welcome inside :) The store is full of high quality, ethically manufactured pet items and healthy food. Just as a warning, if you are looking for a low-cost pet store, Metro Mutts might not be for you, but if you are looking for high quality and healthy items to spoil your pet, you are definitely in the right place! Bonus points for its super convenient (for us) H street location. Second, the dog walking -- we have been using Metro Mutts for our dog walking for over 1.5 years and LOVE it! We can do the scheduling online, conveniently cancel walks or request additional walks, and most importantly to me, if our walker talks a vacation or needs to cancel, Metro Mutts will make sure our dogs are taken care of and I don't have to worry about rearranging my work schedule. Every day we get a note emailed from them regarding what time our walker came, details of the walk, and special little notes. I love getting these updates at work and knowing my fur babies are in good hands :) Our two dogs LOVE our walker Challys. I love Metro Mutts and so does my dog. I would have never known about Metro Mutts had i not taken a dog training class with "Spot On Training" as they are in the basement of the store. The staff of Metro Mutts is ultra helpful and you get "points" - printed on your receipt - for every purchase that you can apply to your next purchase. They have a great selection of dog toys, dog treats... They also have dog food but I don't buy mine there. They have a lot of alternate chew things for dogs. for example an antler that my dog is CRAZY about and which lasts forever. I love the place and head over there for the stuff I need although I live in Columbia Heights and not on Capitol Hill. Needless to say, you can bring your dog inside the store and they have bowls of water outside. read more

Before I even had a pet, I loved this store. The owner is super sweet and recommended different places to adopt a dog. I recently adopted a black lab puppy and am a frequent shopper at Metro Mutts. The have a wide variety of treats/toys for being such a small shop. The fact that I can walk my dog the few blocks to MM and bring him in with me is so convenient. I went to the H street store. They are very awesome at this place. I went in to see if they happened to carry my dog's food because I saw on their site that they carry not-as-common brands. They do not carry the brand but she looked up all of her distributors to see if she could order it for me. She could not order it for me but she did tell me who sells it in the area AND helped me find one that is comparable in the brands they carry. I am going to read up on Fromm's and if I like what I read, I will probably switch. They didn't have to do all that for me and I greatly appreciate it. read more

I stopped in to Metro Mutts just before heading out to run errands, with a big name pet store on my list of stops. It was the quick internet search that brought up so many rave reviews that made me decide to stop over. I promise this store is packed with every good thing for your dog, including the staff. The guy helping me was a wealth of information about their food options and helped guide me to the exact product for my sick dog. I was equally impressed that the more I shared about my dog's situation, that the "best" option for my dog was not the most expensive item in my hand. Kudos for not trying to up sell! NOT ONCE have I heard the words "Can I help you?" or "How are you today?" come from this comatose individual's inoperable lips! I've had pets all my life and done business with all kinds of pet stores in different places in the country. Never, and I mean NEVER, have I encountered a gem like Metro Mutts. It is more than a pet supply store; it's more like a community connection for pet owners where you become known and valued as a customer and also a friend. The owners are just the neatest people and they are committed to bringing on staff that share their enthusiasm for pets and pet owners. It all shines through. When I have friends and relatives in town (also pet owners), they always request a trip into Metro Mutts because they like the vibe and the personal attention they can get if they are looking for a particular kind of item. For instance, my daughter brings her teacup Chihuahua in (very hard to find tiny dog items in many places), and Rosa has a blast running around the store--playing chase with Romeo the cat (in residence at the NE store), and getting personal fittings for outwear, sized-right chew toys, and the rest. It is a a fun outing, and one that simply couldn't--wouldn't-- happen in most places of business. Gotta love it. I'm an avid Metro Mutts fan and proud of it. It's a perfectly passable pet shop, but the selection isn't great. They also now keep a "shop cat" in the store, which is fine, except she's aggressive to other animals. Tonight she hissed at my dog and swatted at his nose... for no real reason. The cashier copped a major attitude with me, telling me that there was a sign on the door "warning" customers of the cat. Note that my dog was on a short leash. He wasn't even approaching the cat, and he certainly wasn't being ill-behaved around it. It's fine to keep a "shop pet," but only if the pet in question is friendly to other animals. read more

Special order issues: very disappointed! I ordered special sized training collars from them on a wednesday.. They told me they would order the collars from 2 different suppliers.. I was impressed. They advised me,at that time, that my collar distributor preference may have discontinued the collars that I wanted... I was discouraged but willing to entertain the secondary option as long as the product material was comparable. Both options were supposed to arrive in the store on the following Tuesday, I strolled over there to see what selection they ordered, only to find the collars hadn't arrived yet... The employees fumbled through a few boxes but then offered me a business card and the suggestion that I "call in before I come next time". A mild feeling of frustration began to overcome me.. Thoughts of "why did I come to this place?" and "why don't I just order the collars online?" began to race through my mind.. I decided to be a lil more patient and wait another week.. Certainly they would call me within the additional week to let me know the collars were in... No call! So again, I walked over there (disregarding the employees advice to call before I come) the following Monday.. I asked the same employee had the collars I ordered come in yet? He checked the computer, he checked invoices from the filing cabinet, he made a few calls.. Again, the collars were not in the store! He stated that "his boss, said that WHEN the collars came in, they would deliver them to me, free of charge"... While I appreciate the sentiment, Boss, your missing the point, these are training collars.. Training collars that i need for my clients.. I decided to pay retail because I figured you'd have them in stock.. I ordered them because your employee told me she could have them in a few days, and she gave me the additional option to look at another distributors similar product... But to wait two weeks only to be be told "when it comes in, well bring it to you!"... When i expressed my frustration to the guy behind the counter, at the lack of communication and apparent stall tactics to just admitting something happened with my special order, he just shrugged his shoulders... I was pissed... I told him to cancel the order and that I wouldn't be back. I will order them wholesale for my clients rather than support this local business. I am a dog trainer and dog walker with clients up and down the hill, between both metro mutt locations, I will make sure my clients know about my experience. Very disappointed. They get 1 star from me based solely on this experience. The store is cute and seemed to have a fair amount of product selection for the space provided. Had I not experienced this, they would have gotten a higher score. I hope the "boss" reads this yelp review and reaches out to claim the disaster their lack of communication created for me. The owners put so much thought into their store and the needs of their customers. And they continue to solicit ideas from their customers on product lines. One of my cats had some pretty serious health problems, and the organic, local cat food that metro mutts carries has helped keep my little girl healthy. The staff are very helpful and the prices are reasonable. I love stopping in for a treat or toy to spoil my kitties. read more
