I wanted to leave a review for Masterpiece Canine Spa. I have been taking my cat, Billie-Jean (BJ), here for almost five years and will continue to use their services. Having a cat groomed or shaved is not easy, and finding a place that specializes in feline grooming can be even harder! Not only do they work with my busy schedule, but they also take the absolute best care of BJ. I always feel completely comfortable dropping her off, and even better when I pick her up. The staff is professional, caring, and truly understands how to make both pets and their owners feel at ease. A special shoutout to BJ's bestie, Jerrod! His calm demeanor is contagious, and he makes BJ feel so safe and comfortable during her grooming appointments. It is clear how much he cares about the animals he works with, and that peace of mind means everything to me. We love it here and highly recommend Masterpiece Canine Spa! read more

New to the DC area, I needed to find a groomer for our Cavapoo Gracie. I did research, stopped dog owners on the street to make inquiries, but Masterpiece Canine Spa, specifically the owner Abby, was the only one who responded immediately to my message and she is a most effective communicator. Upon arriving, we were all greeted enthusiastically and Gracie did not show any trepidation about going with the groomer, which she usually does when going to get groomed. She was very happy when we picked her up and looked beautiful. Masterpiece did a phenomenal job. The space is clean, open (so you can see what is being done to your dog), and it only took an hour. I am so grateful to have found Masterpiece and Abby. If I could give more than five stars, I would. Thank you Abby and Masterpiece team! read more

Masterpiece is a name completely in line with what you get with this groomer. My pom Oliver is a cantankerous little guy, but they love him anyway and take extremely good care of him. His groomer Sharon always makes him look like a million bucks and as adorable as humanly possible. He also has severe tracheal collapse, so finding a groomer that will not wrap anything around his neck and keep him safe is a must and I absolutely trust him with them. Their policy of never kenneling any dogs is also a big plus, as anxiety can exacerbate his cough and ensuring he's not waiting around or left alone is crucial in containing his cough fits. You get what you pay for with groomers, and while Masterpiece isn't inexpensive, you WILL get the best groom you can get in the city. If you've got a dog like mine that has a lucious coat that needs lots of TLC and/or a dog with major health considerations, I highly recommend you come here. Your dog will get LOTS of compliments on walks. read more

If you have a simple cut (think teddy bear), your dog is young and healthy, and want your dog cut short, this salon will do a good job. The salon is unable to work with dogs with special circumstances (medical issues, matting, etc.). I was refused service after my dog had a tumor removed. The groomer was unwilling to take the time to remove 10% of the mats that were caused from the Cone, after I extensively removed 90% of them myself. Ownership's communication style can be abrupt, abrasive, and strict. Ownership is not open to feedback in any way. At masterpiece, money, social media posting, and maximizing time/effienecy, come before love of the animal, passion for the craft, and empathy for the human being. read more

It is Masterpiece's policy to express your dog's anal glands on every visit whether they need it or not. There is no ability to opt out of this procedure and they do not notify customers of the policy in advance. They just did it without my permission to my healthy 10 week old puppy that saw my vet last week (no symptoms of a gland issue). When asked, they said they did it because they did not want to spend the time having to bathe a dog twice on the off chance the dog expressed its own glands naturally while on the grooming table. Please have a talk with your vet about the health risks of preemptively (no physical signs of an issue like scooting etc) expressing a dog's anal glands before booking with Masterpiece. For reference, they have outlawed groomers performing this procedure in the UK due to the potential negative health consequences. read more

I love to take my toy schnauzer here for grooming. The staff are so kind and gentle with my pup. They take the time to discuss your pup's grooming before they start and text you 20-30 minutes prior to them finishing, so you can be there to pick up your pet as soon as they finish. You must book your appointment in advance just like you would your own appointment at a salon. read more

I took my dog Truman in for a groom last week. Abby and her team were easy to schedule with, were responsive and did a GREAT job. I liked that they notified me when my dog was almost ready. The pricing is pretty comparable to other salons in the area. The service is top notch though and you can tell Abby really takes pride in what she does. Truman looks great! Started off with Rachel & positive impressions. My dog is a very healthy 12 yr old so they required Vet approval which they received within a day. For some reason they wanted MORE info from the Vet (poor handwriting or something). Two weeks of waiting, I spoke with Abby which was NOT A PLEASANT EXPERIENCE. SHE IS RUDE & CONDESCENDING. THIS PLACE IS TOO IMPRESSED WITH ITSELF. AVOID THEM. NOT WOTH THE HASSLES read more

We just relocated from Seattle and are looking for a groomer who does a single-dog approach like this place. We thought they were the one. They are VERY friendly people, single-pup handling which makes for low stress, and have a very thorough intake process that asks lots of good questions. My dog was calm and chill coming out like he had a pleasant experience. I can tell he was handled gently (he's a senior now). -- Why 3 starts: After providing very specific details and a picture of what we wanted we didn't get close and my guy was also uneven on the neck and knees (I am fixing it). Some choices the groomer made were directly opposite what I asked for (muzzle mustache, face in general), some things I asked for were ok (paws and tail). All in all the cut was ok but not near like the image I sent. Since I had to even parts myself, and it's the most pricy groom we've had at this quality level, 3 stars. I won't go back because of the congestion of the location (ease), the cost for experience (value), and the attention to detail. I guess for the price point and it being in a home/ish setup I expected excellence (not perfection but excellence). read more

Masterpiece Canine Spa has the best customer service and groomers in D.C. While the prices are quite steep (almost $200 for a full bath and groom), it is worth it. Why? Well for starters your dog is not locked up in a kennel half the day waiting for their turn- the service each dog one-by-one and make sure to have them perfectly groomed in 1.5-2 hours. I have always been very pleased with the job they've done on our pup and they follow my neurotic instructions perfectly. I get our dog groomed every 3-4 months, but I still think it is worth it knowing how well they take care of him during his grooming appointment. It is the only groomer I can take him to where he happily follows the groomer inside. read more

Simply the best. Yes, more expensive than other groomers, but it's because you get a quality groom you just won't find elsewhere. They do an exceptional job in a short amount of time, and the customer service is superb. I'll never leave! read more

Masterpiece Canine Spa - The best grooms for my cockapoo - Pet Groomers Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

The BEST Dog Grooming Spa in the DMV. I am from Manhattan so I look for groomers that provided that Manhattan look/skill. If you know you just know. I live in NYC and have an apartment down in Capitol Hill, DC area so whenever I am down there, this is my go to. Due to COVID & exclusivity, appointments in NYC are rare to come by and this is the situation with MCS. I came here after meeting the owner's of Kash - and when I tell you the night and day difference I saw in him made me jump at getting an appointment. The initial appointment for my 2 boys had a slight hiccup due to miscommunication on my part possibly - and those 2 women were able to still exceed my expectations. My boys looked the best they have and they grew out amazingly (which is something I always be sure to look out for as it tells a lot about the quality of skill) I had a secondary appointment but had to have spinal surgery that ended up making me lose my appointment. By the time I tried to rebook, they were filled until mid-October and as of recently, I found out they are booked until the new year. So be sure to try to setup all of your dog's appointments in advance. If I remember the groom for both of my small dogs was about $230 - much less than I expected especially after their quality of service and skill. If I could book them privately I would do so in a heartbeat. I wish Yelp allowed for video, as pictures can not do these women's work justice. I cannot say enough good things about Masterpiece. I first started going to them when I needed a groomer who could handle my elderly dog after neck surgery. They were so incredibly patient and understanding of his limitations. Then, when we got a nervous puppy, they went to great lengths to make him feel comfortable, and provided updates during the grooming which helped this nervous dog mom- I would not take my dog to anyone else! read more

Can't say enough good things about the team at Masterpiece! They make setting up an appointment a breeze - including allowing you to make arrangements via text (they are very responsive!) and, while I know they're quite popular, they can usually make appointments as soon as the next day - great for lousy planners like me! The first time I took my Beagle mix, Bruce, to Masterpiece, I had just adopted him a few weeks ago and - for all I know - it may have been his first grooming ever. The team at Masterpiece made me feel confident he was in great hands. They treated him with the care and gentleness I hoped for, and let me know as soon as he was done (as opposed to some other places in town that won't let you pick up for a few hours while the dogs air dry in a cage). We are happy, loyal Masterpiece clients!! read more

Lilly is our mini poodle. We usually have her groomed by Pamela at another dog grooming place; but had to cancel at the last min. So onto Yelp. I found Masterpiece Canine and was so grateful that they were able to accommodate Lilly's groom within days. I was worried about Lilly giving the groomer a hard time. Her ears, mouth, paws were all sensitive areas and she squirms a lot when handling these areas. I was also worried that the groomer wouldn't be gentle with her. After seeing her and going off of my husbands take of the drop-off and pick-up, I was relieved. She was calm and was not in any obvious stress. The groomer also followed our instructions by shaving wound areas more than other parts of her body while keeping the cut even; difficult to explain but HEY they managed to do it! Thank you so much for grooming Lilly, for being gentle with her. You guys are our go to place! read more

Took my havanese pup here for his second ever groom. Abby and her team did an amazing job on my Maxwell's mini style. I wanted to keep the characteristic havanese length he's growing but needed things cleaned up. Abby called me before I booked to talk through the services and she also called again to double check on details after I dropped him off. I am so happy with the result. I can see his eyes again, his sanitary area is all tidied up, and I'm obsessed over how perfectly round his little paws look. Thank you so much! Maxwell and I will be back read more

Today I took took my senior rescue dog here in the sweltering heat. The closest parking spot was a quarter mile away from the spa; I arrived there just before my appointment and hoped to be at the spa in a few minutes. But at 102º, it was much too hot for my dog to walk. The owner was kind enough to wait for us, especially when I told her I was a disabled person carrying a 32-pound dog. The owner was able to bathe my dog, dry her, trim and grind her nails, and trim her paws in only 40 minutes. Impressive, especially for $85. I appreciate the owner being so patient when I was so anxious about being late. The owner assured me that my dog was fine; she had to be groomed while lying down, because she was exhausted from the heat. The owner was very honest and told me it was best to get my dog groomed at a veterinary office in the future because she is a senior. I would love to take my dog here, since the staff is so nice, and they did such a great job with my dog, but I can understand if they're not comfortable grooming senior dogs. It's probably best for anyone with a senior dog to bypass this place entirely in favor of a veterinary groomer who is more adept at grooming elderly clients. read more

My dog Benny is usually a fairly decent furry client, but definitely gets nibbly around the paws. Our groomer was so patient and really listened to everything I had to say. I love the drop off and pickup process. Benny can be quite fearful of other dogs so I loved knowing he wouldn't be stressed by being surrounded by tons of other dogs before and after being groomed. He looks totally adorable, I'm going to use photos from today as examples of what I want in the future. Our groomer was so kind to him. It's definitely on the upper end of what grooming can cost but it's SO worth it. Not only are the staff being fairly compensated, you can see the result of having really well trained personnel. Our groomer noticed a tiny scab on Benny's leg and sent me a closeup photo. I had already known about this but it was so comforting to know he was in such careful, caring hands. I can't recommend this place enough! read more

Brought my pup here for a bath and groom. He is usually so nervous but they were able to get him clean and keep him happy! One of the best parts of this salon/spa is that they are "express" so when you have an appointment they stick to it. They try to get your pup done in 1-2 hours (depending on the service) so the pup doesn't have to wait in a crate all day. Many of the other groomers in the area only offer that you drop your pet off and they keep them in a crate for several hours until they get to them. They text you about fifteen minutes in advance from when your pet will be ready for pickup. Overall a great system for everyone! read more

Great place and our old English sheepdogs love their spa days. Abby and Rachel are so affectionate. Winston and Clementine couldn't look better. We have had terrible experiences with groomers in the past and we are so grateful to have found Masterpiece. I trust them entirely to take good care of the pups. Best of all our pups seem so excited to go in for a groom when we drop off and so happy after their cuts to show off on their walk home. Highly recommend. read more

Kaitlyn did a fantastic job grooming our Bernese Mountain Dog puppy. Because of the breed's challenging double undercoat, I've been nervous to take her somewhere. The breed standard cuts are great here, and they do nail trimming and ear cleaning. She also pointed out some allergy spots on Darcy's skin, which is really helpful. I love that the dogs aren't kept in cages in the back, and that they really strive to make the pup as comfortable as possible. The facilities are clean and everyone is friendly. Darcy looks beautiful and we will definitely be going back. read more

Im so happy I found Masterpiece Canine Spa to groom my 12 year old Maltichon Tex. He's a good boy and likes most people and dogs but doesn't really like to be groomed by strangers. Its difficult for me to trim his nails and feet and he will not let me brush his teeth. I was able to make a same day appointment with Anthony. The location was easy to find with the clear instructions I was given and it was quite clean and clam when I arrived. Check in was easy and they even offered us some water while we waited. Anthony did a wonderful job cleaning up tex's feet bum and face and he looked so cute afterwards he's had so many compliments. My sister even said his feet looked like "show dog feet". This review is long overdue. Masterpiece is a rarity these days in the dog grooming world. Not only do they always execute a perfect cut on my dog, but they do so in a way that puts the dog first. While this comes at a slight premium, it is well worth it both in terms of getting the cut that you asked for and having a happy, calm dog who is not afraid to go to the groomers. For years, I took my dog to groomers that would have him wait for hours in a cage amongst other panicked, barking dogs and loud music before being groomed (i.e., the typical dog groomer). And often, the cut was not properly finished or was clearly done in a rush. On top of that, I noticed that my dog was becoming increasingly anxious about going to the groomers. Clearly, this wasn't working for either of us. Finding Masterpiece was a blessing; and while more expensive, was clearly worth it after seeing my dog come out looking immaculate and happy in record time (you get what you pay for). My dog is groomed by BRITTANY who is the BEST groomer we've ever had. She is not only incredibly knowledgeable about dogs and grooming, but also extremely caring and present. I have learned so much from her on how to better care for my dog's coat in between cuts, and I love that she points out any new bumps or changes that she sees in him during each grooming (she takes notes!). I highly recommend her and your dog will LOVE her calm and positive energy. read more

Now they have just moved to straight out lies. I clearly stated that he had a shave down with the vet earlier. I recently got a Malshi puppy and his hair grows very fast. We always schedule our appointments with Katelyn because she's really patient with the little pup. Throughout the whole process, she's chatting with him to make sure he's comfortable. My puppy is known to be very dramatic - just ask my vet. He's literally the biggest baby ever, but Katelyn is still able to do her job well regardless of his random cries (he cries even when the scissors are nowhere near him or if the dryer turns on). They groom the dogs out in the open so you can watch if you'd like. The place is also clean, which is always a plus. OH! Another thing, another client picked up her dog with an ear infection and Katelyn saw that it had spread to in-between the paws (most likely from scratching). This dog was so furry so it would've been hard to spot it but seeing how Katelyn works, I'm not at all surprised that she caught it. Katelyn is thorough and handles her furry clients like it's her own. When I first met her, she had a doggy voice and I instantly knew she was animal friendly. As long as we're here in DC, Katelyn will be the only groomer I will take my Malshi to. read more

Masterpiece is awesome. Scheduling an appointment, dropping off/picking up...everything was friendly, on point and smooth. Katelyn did an absolutely phenomenal job on my standard poodle - she has got some serious skills!! I'm grateful for the time she took before the groom (it was our first time there) to review all the different aspects of grooming (shampoo scent/cleaning ears/etc.) and the cut style. I never felt rushed or unheard. Masterpiece is a more pricey than other groomers, but the quality, service and care are top notch. I am normally not a review writer, and if I do it's usually positive, but my last experience at Masterpiece on Friday March 19, 2021 was a disaster. I explained how I wanted my Goldendoodle Hunter groomed and styled, provided pictures, explicitly said please don't cut his body or legs close and they did a butcher job anyway! They kept texting me saying he was matted...he's not ( he just had a blowout bath 2 weeks prior to his grooming ---see the pic with the blowout) so instead taking the time to de-tangle (there are conditioners for that) the few spots he has (he is a long haired breed) they decided without telling me in advance to give him wack butcher cut. He's got sores on his legs and a very unattractive non-Goldendoodle looking cut! Every dog is different and some may require more time for grooming and styling but if it seems like they have to put in any work they will just cut it all off and say "oh sometimes it just better to start over"! What! And for $200....I would NOT recommend them to anyone and will NEVER ever take my dog there again!!!! read more

Cannot recommend Masterpiece enough! We brought our 3-month-old goldendoodle, Judy, here for her first-ever grooming and are SO happy we did. The place is brand new, remarkably clean, and all the staff members are so kind, friendly and incredibly skilled. We felt totally comfortable leaving our little lady in their capable hands. The groomer, Katelyn, was super patient with our wiggly 3-month-old, and took extra time and attention to make sure she wasn't freaked out or scared during all the necessities (nail trim, ears, private parts, etc.) and blow dry. When we came to pick Judy up, we were blown away by how refreshed and beautiful she looked. Not to mention, she was calm and not traumatized in the slightest. Even better, this isn't your typical groomers -- you book your grooming by appointment and bring your pet in for just that appointment time, as opposed to just dropping off your dog for the day (although, if you need to do that, they team up with Atlas Doghouse next door to make that possible). I much prefer this, so that our pup can get their full attention for the time she's there, and not have to wait around in a crate before/after. Plus, they're open on Saturdays and Sundays -- so you can bring your pet in for their appointment, go grab brunch, and come back and pick up your beautifully groomed pup! read more

They are not super close to my house, but I love them! They set our appointments for the entire year but have worked with me the few times I needed to reschedule. The groomer did a fantastic job. The logistics at the Maryland Avenue location, however, are a nightmare for anyone who doesn't live within walking distance of the location. I understand and appreciate the drop off pickup requirements due to covid, but with no place to sit outside, trying to arrive for pickup within 15 minutes of the service being completed or incurring a $25 late fee, which was added 3 hours after receiving my initial receipt, did not make for the best first-time experience.
