REI has great products and a fantastic selection for camping and outdoor gear. We recently bought a Coleman propane grill from them, and it worked awesome. However, we noticed that the 16oz propane cans they sell were nearly double the price of the same ones at Walmart, with no difference in performance. Overall, REI is a great place for quality camping gear and clothing, but if you're buying propane, you might want to shop around for better pricing. read more

REI is one of the best and oldest names in outdoor sports retail and becoming a lifetime member for a one-time $25 fee is money well spent. Why? Because you earn 1% back for every dollar spent. The clock resets every January 1st and the all important certificate for total dividends earned the previous year can sometimes be an astonishing amount. Use it or lose it! What i like about this particular location is the larger retail space compared with Rancho Cucamonga or Huntington Beach. While it gets crowded sometimes, there's still room to navigate around clusters of people. Our favorite subsections of the store include the hiking boots and socks, especially Smartwool, followed by packs and accessories. Outdoor wear doesn't change much, basic color palates and functions for the same high prices might dissuade some, but subtle improvements to fabrics are worth considering. For instance, having clothing that truly is UV30-50 resistant is important for watersports and activities at altitude of southern exposure sites. After some 25+ years I'd have to say that Patagonia and North Face are my top two producers for jackets and technical wear. Parking is plentiful but getting out on a busy day is a lesson in patience and being quick to assert oneself or wait an eternity for another opportunity. As noted, it's the collective space and larger than average inventory that makes this store an essential stop for new trail shoes or something that makes a great gift. For years, REI has been one of my main shopping stores. This is one of the larger REI's in Southern California. I circulate between many of them depending on where I am and their stock. A few years ago I had my bike repaired here and specifically asked for the experienced manager/trainer to work on it because I had a reference for him from someone else They instead had a newbie work on it who f'ed it up big time and damaged the derailleur and other parts. They had to replace the derailleur and the manager did a half-fast job correcting the other mistakes. It never was put back together correctly. I learned from that experience not to have your bike repaired here and to go to a shop where you know a quality dedicated technician will work on it. But it is hard to find a quality bike tech in our area. The good ones can't afford to live here and move on. The employees that I interacted with here were helpful. The dressing rooms are fine and the parking is free and easy right outside the door. This store suffers from the same issues that I recently confronted at the Manhattan Beach location: Employees roaming around constantly asking me if I need help locating something. It throws off my shopping concentration and is frankly annoying. Better practice for REI would be to have a circular help desk in the middle of the store for customers to come to where employees are lined up ready to help those that need it. Put a Big HELP sign there suspended from the rafters so no one can miss it. Much better than 5 different employees asking me if I needed help every few steps I take. Makes no sense. At a certain point, it was so distracting that I forgot what else I was looking for and just purchased the things I initially found and left the store. It takes away from the pleasant shopping browsing experience. Again, just let customers know when they enter where the help desk is and dispatch from there. read more

I'm not a real outdoorsy kind of guy. In the past year, my wife and I retired and are now interested in hiking and in another week are going on a cruise to Alaska. The first thing we purchased was hiking boots for me. Then we bought boots for my wife. In both cases, once we got home and began to wear them (we did walk around the store before purchase) we found them somewhat uncomfortable. The great thing about REI is their return policy. It is like Costco or Nordstrom's. In my case, I had worn them outside a few times so that the sole was no longer pristine to look at (though no wear and tear). We returned the boots and found other brands that were more comfortable. Yesterday, we bought two pair of bincolulars, both Nikon, one pair 8x25, the other 10x25, compact. Good sale price and easy to use. We did our homework and picked them before we went to the store. In EVERY shopping experience, employees are friendly and helpful. Special shout out to--I believe his name is--David, who helped me with my boot shopping. Having a membership comes in handy for sales and, if you shop at REI often enough, points that translate into savings for future shopping. I believe it is $30 for a lifetime membership, worth it if you are going to shop at REI with any regularity. read more

Membership discounts on ski resorts! This local REI offers great discounts for Big Bear, Snow Valley, and Mountain High. Online, there are more featured resorts where you can get up to 42% discounts on lift tickets/packages. 3. Bike shop discounts: Free machine wax and discounts on services. 4. Last, but not least, warehouse sales open to members only. This "garage" sale is located in Manhattan beach, and features open-box/used/like-new gear from clothes, gear, to tents at discounted prices. They are final sale. I went in this afternoon to purchase a pair of running shoes. I will say I had a great experience in the shoe section with Robert. I felt really welcome with him. Thanks for the shoe information they fit comfortably. That being said other than Robert, all the other white employees walked around eyeing every thing we were doing. My two sons love looking at the great gear without feeling uncomfortable. Not only did we feel like we were about to be watched, Pamela the lady who rang up my purchase had the worse attitude with me. Completely disappointed in how the staff is here these days. I have always loved REI, this store in particular has been my goto place for 12+ years. Spend a lot of money here every year. Twice now, in a row that I have come in to buy a new light jacket. They have cables through them through the sleeves which I have no issue with, it's not their fault that a lot of retail crime has increased. My issue is with their staff, working in the mens section both times when I have asked if I could get the cable removed so I could actually try it on. The past two times it has been the same response, no. Today the exact response was this "Sorry I can't, I would have to go get a magnet to do that". Ok, go get a magnet. It's your job. I went to the front just to give some feedback only to have the fromt cashier person go "yeah she should have handled it different, she should have found a solution" without offering anything. "hey, do you still want to try it on, I'll help you out", "I'll call someone if you'd like that can help you". Nothing, zero help. I came in twice this week, once on Saturday and today. My Saturday visit started great, I went in to look for some Hoka's, got the pair I needed, then it went sour once I went to the register to ring out. I politely declined getting their membership, and the employee named Robert who was on registers that day told me "you should be considerate when declining, my manager asks me why I'm not making my quota and I have to say it's because you guys decline". I left with a nasty taste in my mouth. I came back today, Monday to buy another pair of Hoka's with the hope of a better experience. Only one person was helping with shoes, I stopped another employee to ask for help because I didn't want to interrupt the employee who was already helping multiple people at a time. They didn't have my size so I asked to see the next size up to compare, the employee said yes then proceeded to help another client, which is fine, but I never got the shoes and I was sitting waiting, eventually I just got up and left. What started as a grass-roots, hippie-backpacker, crunchy supplier of useful camping gear, has become an overpriced, obnoxiously trendy boutique for hipster Instagrammers. Yeah, they have a lot of camping gear, but it's sooooo high-priced. And for those of us who grew up backpacking for real, most of this junk is completely superfluous. It reminds me of that Reese Witherspoon movie where she shows up at the trailhead with so many gadgets she can't even lift her pack. And by the time she's done, she's dumped most of it. This place carries all the bearded-hipster brands like NorthFace and CAVU and everything that's considered hip. You can buy your $2000 plastic kayak or your $300 single-burner camping stove or your $60 polyester beanie here. Somehow backpacking has become more expensive than golf at a country club. They even carry a $1500 solar generator to power your laptop so you can post selfies from Everest without missing a beat. REI also carries the useless gadgets that you'd never really take camping (like a carbon-fiber spork). It's become more of a store for millennials and Gen Zers to LOOK like they're rugged adventurers without actually leaving their parent's house. You know, throw on the NorthFace, tie up the man-bun, toss the kayak on the Subaru and drive to Trader Joe's for some soya milk. Everything here is YouTube friendly. The staff is good for the most part. There are some knowledgeable folks. They're efficient with checking out. They do have a good rental department so you can try before you buy. And they do carry stuff like climbing gear which other stores don't. One last thing: this place is as liberal as it gets and they're toeing the narrative, so expect agro-masking and plan accordingly. REI has become way too woke-- it's evident in their staff because it's obvious they put more emphasis on the demographic they hire-- it's more important to them to hire hip wokesters than knowledge staff. I have been a member since college days. I can rarely get quality answers. In college I worked at mountaineering shops and ski shops and thought it would be a great part-time job now because I love selling outdoor equipment. I have taken two video interviews and never hear back and it's because I'm the older demographic they sell to. I've decided in my next video interview to wear a wig with a "man bun" or ponytail and perhaps a earring and a fake token tattoo. Even my lib girlfriend agrees with me on this --so much for the inclusion that REI touts. I'll keep shopping there because it's my only option but I now do my research on line for some products. read more

Needless to mention that she didn't apologize when she realized that she made a stupid assumption. This location always has customer service on point! Been here a few times to return/pick up and never an issue. I do recommend you get a membership as it also helps expedite the process if you don't have a receipt. Their online ordering for pick up is also pretty fast, same day if in stock and usually only 1-2 days if it has to be transferred from another store. read more

When in need of outdoor gear, REI is all you need! I'm not an avid outdoorsman type person but I've gone to Alaska and headed to Jackson Hole this week. I was able to easily pickup all the snow gear I needed. They have a huge selection of different colors and brands. Their items are pricey but the quality is apparent, so I would say it's worth it over ordering something cheaper. This may be one of those "you get what you pay for." My only issue is their kids section was barely existent. The sales associate said it was picked over and I would have a hard time finding my toddlers size. Boy was she right. I would like to see more stock on hand for the littles. read more

Great customer service! The employees at this REI are super nice and helpful. I was approached at least 3 times asking if I needed assistance. They're eager to help and are easy to strike a simple conversation, which is refreshing in the age of social distancing. When we arrived, there was a line outside (about 15-20 people deep). The line moved quickly, and we were inside within 15 minutes. They're currently holding a holiday sale, so it's understandable why there was an influx of customers waiting to get inside.
