I have to say the workers here are very helpful, very friendly, and never seem to be angry. They are frequently asking if they can help with anything. This specific store is pretty big and there are a lot of options to choose from. I bought a Co-op bundle, towel, pants, stool, and other items for a decent price as it was Labor Day sale. Bri was so helpful with getting me set up for my rental, and joining the membership program! Such a sweet girl, the process wasn't boring it was like experiencing something and being helped by a compassionate and sweet soul. SAVING MONEY? As I understand it, $50 spent when joining the program (you'll probably spend that much tbh unless you are just getting propane it a snack ahah) gains you $30 off when you join their Co-op - Kathy and Bri helped me understand this, hopefully, I understood that, go in and ask! EMPLOYMENT?: I a sled the question that I think the "not so outdoorsy" are afraid to ask! The hiring process! I thought that only those who have hiked mount Everest had been selected, and the truth is that everyone is approachable, and that is not a criterion to be a part of this wonderful environment! Your personality and cooperation with others are the keys, and that's what made my experience so amazing!!!!!! MANAGERS: Shoutout to Kathy as well (has a sea turtle on her back!) so helpful as well! She set up the complications on the machine and got us set straight, strong analytical thinking on her feet haha!! OH! and shoutout to the man/manager?-who saw me waiting at the rental station for camping gear, he called someone over to help me! AWARENESS: *they definitely get busy with lines- so be ready for a long haul, embrace the journey!* The last person I wanted to mention was the man at the watch station, helpful, (I never know where anything is!) he was funny too! Warm and personable staff that make an experience come together is something that makes my day, and really speaks to the environment and culture! I'll be returning later today to pick up my rental, and use my $30 from the Membership program! BONUS POINTS: I'm getting extra PROPANE with that $30, and watch Man (of the Tuesday 7pm shift) let me know there is a return policy of a year if need be, but he made a fair point that I could use my heater with the extra propane, and with this weather, that makes the most sense! read more

I have to give credit to where credit is deserved, and REI definitely has taken the necessary steps to open with the COVID situation in mind. They have amazing curbside pick up and makes its really effortless to initiate a pick up (as well as fast!). You receive an email stating that your item is ready for pick up, and upon arrival to the clearly marked parking spots, you can state the make/model/color of your car and an associate will come out with your item in about 5 minutes. No log ins required, just a photo ID to confirm your pick up and they will either place the item into your trunk or rear seat based on your request. The store is also open and has sanitizers up front as well as associates monitoring the incoming guests. I've done a return in store and the associates are helpful and clear with directions. Honestly, the only problem I have with REI is that they use ontrac shipping, which has a poor reputation of marking items as delivered when still out for delivery or mis-delivery of locations. Other than that, I'm happy to be an REI member (paid 20 bucks for lifetime membership back in 2009) and it's still really easy to acquire a membership now! The prices may not be the cheapest but the service and experience definitely make up for the cost. read more

I am very disappointed. I took my new snowboard to REI and they did a horrible job on the hot wax and edge job. I usually take my other boards to a mom and pop shop but I thought that because I spent a lot of money on a new burton snowboard, I would treat it right. Nope. I was wrong. I have rust on my edges and there are scratches. I would of taken it back and demanded a re-wax and get the edges redone , but I'm leaving to snowboard tomorrow. Also, the employee that convinced me to become a member , failed to mention that only machine waxes are free. I had to pay more for hot wax. I was already a little irritated about that but I decided to move past it and just pay more for the hot wax and the edges to be done. Never doing that again. It was not worth the money. Moral of the story, don't trust big corporations. Give the business to a snowboard shop that deserves it. read more

This review is not for the store as a whole. The store itself is nice, clean, and everything you would want it to be for an REI. It is stuffed full of everything you would need for high end camping, biking, hiking, trail running, and a few other outdoor activities. This review is specific for the bike department. I will soon be making my fifth trip to REI for my brand new bike. This is actually my second bike in a month and will be my third trip for it. I purchased my bikes online. It said they would take a few days to arrive. After the time came and went, I ended up calling in both cases. In both cases, the bikes had arrived and had been built and we were never notified. The online tracking never updated and the store never called. Both bikes had issues. With the first bike, there was something wrong in the crankshaft. After the first attempt to repair it failed after one ride, I took it back in. They had no idea what the issue was, so I returned it and ordered a totally different bike. On the second bike, they built it and did not check the derailleurs. This wasn't something they could have just missed. When the bike gets into the higher gears, you can hear the chain on the derailleurs. It causes the chain to skin and jump dears. When I took it in for the free adjustments, they told me it would take 6 days for them to fix it. They didn't build it properly to begin with, and now it will take 6 days to fix it? Needless to say, I am sick of going to this store. The staff is friendly, but their bike services are flat out lacking. If they don't fix it properly this time, I'm just going to return the bike for a refund and purchase from a local cycling shop. If you do purchase a bike here, make sure you fully test it BEFORE you leave the store. read more

I feel like REI is an overpriced sporting store. I went to buy a shirt for my dad's or for Father's Day and I noticed that there was two of the shirts and when I asked for someone to look it up, they took a long time and they asked someone else and they didn't help me and then when I ordered it from the Front they ordered it but they said I have to pay nine dollars for shipping and I was like what the hell because can't I pick it up from the store. I was shocked that the only option was to have it shipped to me and I had to pay and I feel like they're all they're looking for is money. Everything in the store is so expensive and they don't even give you a bag. The only thing they offer you is a box which I thought was so dumb. read more

Tell me what is the purpose of having telephones throughout the store that are constantly ringing off the hook. So fucking annoying. Ever considered the thought of having walkie talkies so that the ambient noise in the store isnt just a blaring phone. Or idk extension numbers for specific phones so that not ALL THE DAMN PHONES GO OFF ALL AT ONCE. Didn't see a single floor member either. WOW was REI busy today ! They are having a big CO-OP sale and I ordered gear online for pick up and then ending up having to cancel. Evan at the store is who I spoke to over the phone multiple times was just awesome. Kudos to Evan and REI for making the experience a pleasant one. Came here to pick up an item my boyfriend ordered and I was an authorized person to pick up. The girl was a little iffy but thankfully the guy next to her knew exactly what we were talking about. I was able to get the item with no problems and I was on my way. Before I left I decided to look around the camp area items. So much to choose from and so much to admire. We are trying to consolidate our gear and also trying to make everything compact. There were a few items I was eyeing and actually went to go back to purchase them. I really feel the items they have at this store are really cool. Like every REI, this too was really clean and they also had great deals throughout the store. The staff is knowledgeable and have great customer service skills which I think is a plus. If you are an outdoors person and enjoy going on hikes, camping, or backpacking this is the place to find all your gear. We will definitely be back! read more

REI is an outdoors aficionado's paradise. The store carries everything from lanterns to camping stoves. You can get tents, camping chairs, and outdoor clothing at REI. It's kind of a one-stop shop if you think about it. They offer a lifetime membership for a $20 fee that gives you access to special promotions and events. This location in Tustin is much bigger than their old location. The staff was super nice and answered questions about products. Some items they don't carry in the stores so you can always check the website. They do have sales on display items or returned items so keep an eye out for those. I don't always shop at REI but if you have someone who loves hiking, camping, or nature in your life, this is the place to get them gear. read more

Misleading store inventory on website. Does bot tell you when placing order if one of the items is not in stock and has to be shipped to store, even when using the store "filter" on the website. Upon arrival the person dropping off my half order was curt and rude. I went into the store to inquire and was told you actually wont know if what is in stock, is actually in stock until AFTER the order is placed, again the staff person at the counter, Karen, was curt and rude. Don't shop here unless you want snot nosed nasty employees to deal with, and you want to play magic eight ball with a website essentially selling items that MIGHT or might not be in stock at the store the website says its in stock in. Deceptive inventory listing, rude service= not ordering from the brick and mortar store to pick up here again. I was in need of hiking shoes and I received great advice and customer service from Wayne. His knowledge and experience got me into my first hiking boots. I am not a hiker but needed something for my snow day with the kids. Found exactly what I wanted and am really happy with my experience there. I hope corporate is reading and give him recognition for his above and beyond service. I will be back for more shoes. FYI, REI pricing was on point with Amazon which was a big win. Lastly they're not hassling people in the store about stupid MAN DATES which is not a law is appreciated and made the shopping experience better. REI stance for require extra income LOL. By far the best customer service and selection around. I always bring my skis and snowboard here to get it tuned waxed and sharpened. They are pretty honest about letting you know whether you need service done or not. I really appreciate their honesty. I've been turned away many times where I want it to have my skis sharpened and they said I don't need it yet. Which I am grateful for because it saves me money. The store itself has a better selection than the Huntington location, but unfortunately I had my first terrible experience with the company here. Sandy was very obnoxious and disrespectful. I had two previous purchases (both shoes for the same price), and I was returning one of them, so I could exchange the one I had for the one I wanted (they were on different cards). So keeping one, but wanting to have it put under a different card. I had explained this to that woman while she looked at us as if we were stupid. At first I thought she just didn't understand, so I tried explaining it differently each time she had asked, to which she interrupted and said," are you returning one or both." I told her that once more, but she interrupted by speaking over us another time speaking to us very slowly saying that, " I don't think, that whatever exchange means in your head, is what it means to us." Of course it means I want to swap the item in my possession with the item in your possession. I've worked in the retail and customer service industry, and trust me when I say: no person in their right mind would speak to someone in such a way as she did today over as simple and common of a transaction. She then went on to interrupt us, again, to say," You know what, let's start with just this." And once the first item was returned as we wanted it to be and started to say what we wanted with the next item, she spoke over us again for the millionth time saying, " No, one thing at a time. Only one thing at a time." Keep in mind this entire time she was talking to us she spoke over us each time we spoke, slowed her speaking down and changed her tone the way you would with a toddler you're lecturing, and used her hands to gesture alongside that for each item and thing she said. For example, when she said, "let's just start with this" she shook her head and her hands as if she's had absolutely enough of what we were saying, and when she said, " one thing at a time" she literally gestured holding up one finger. This experience with her was not only terrible, but absolutely demeaning. She was insufferable. The entire time we spoke to her politely and well-mannered and her attitude did not respond in the same way. If I hadn't met the dozens of genuine hearted and helpful employees here, I wouldn't have loved and trusted this company for backcountry supplies and the like. If this was my first time coming to REI, I would've never come back. My thoughts about REI was yes it's expensive, but the workers, their expertise, and support made up for that. Not anymore unfortunately. What a sour way to ruin someone's day. She shouldn't have to get fired, but I'd definitely recommend management and corporate to watch over her behavior, because she seemed all too comfortable acting this way, and I can only imagine how she behaves with her other customers or even coworkers. read more

Our favorite item that we've purchased at REI is our evrgrn starry night tent. Last time we went camping we kept half of the top of the tent rolled back and were able to see a shooting star on the last day of a meteor shower from the comfort of our sleeping bag inside our tent! I also bought my favorite Patagonia plaid flannel shirt here a couple years ago and despite my initial hesitation about the price, it still looks almost new despite the amount of wear. Overall, you might spend a little more but the quality is much better which means you won't have to replace your gear as soon which is not only good for you since it saves time but is also better for the environment since you're consuming less. Excellent customer service! My toddler pulled off her socks in the store and I didn't realize until we got to the car. I went back frantically looking for them and an employee asked if I needed help and paged the staff. Luckily someone found it and the employee looked for me! In any other store, I would be told to just check lost and found. This doesn't have to do with their products but customer service in general is so important to me and leaves a lasting impression on the business. REI is really the only fully equipped camping and hiking store. While I miss the 1970s REI which was much more utilitarian and warehouse-like, they still have a wide variety of items to meet your needs. I suppose it provides a more traditional retail experience, but it was much easier to locate things by category. Service here is always friendly and helpful. read more

I recently bought a bike from this store on Sunday, which I had to return 2 days later. It was an electric bike and something was wrong with it. REI is a great store with great return policy. The reason I am giving 3 stars is that I was very unhappy with how the store operates. I am fine with the employees but not their management. The whole experience with buying the bike and Returning the bike was absolutely annoying as you have to wait forever. At one point i was wondering what was taking so long for them to take my money, and at another point I was wondering what is taking so long to give me my money back. I blame management for not taking into account for the support needed in the bike dept. Every time, I am there it always looks like there is a 3 to 1 ratio of customers to employees. Pros: - customer service was good, people were willing to approach you and help the best that they can. - Store is clean an organized - the staff at the bike dept. is friendly - Staff was courteous Cons: - they seems to have inventory only on their own bicycles - very few knowledgeable people selling bikes. (I felt I knew more) - Only 1 slow register being shared - Bike dept. staff needs more support, i.e. more staff or more registers - can only return in one location, while there are 5+ open registers in the front. So customers are waiting, and a bunch of staff staying around. - only 1 system in bike dept. for looking up parts, purchasing, services, return, taking phone calls, and rentals. - need a better process around bike support, if you selling a brand, make sure you can support it, as in buying parts. Don't tell the customer to source the parts themselves. - Overall, if you have the free time, than sure. Take your time and buy the bike you want. But if you want to be in and out. Don't expect it to happen. The cons is the only reason why I gave them 3 stars on only. read more

This branch will charge you more than the stated late fee on rentals. Signage said 25$ for late fee - but what you don't know is, there are many more fees on top of that that they charge. They are willing to lose a customer of 15 years of loyalty. The late fees were as much as the rentals themselves - it's obviously a scam against their customer. Their rental program is so early in the process they don't even have an SKU / product entry for a late fee and will charge you on the same product code as the actual rental itself. The late fee structure is entirely arbitrary and has cost them a customer that has spent thousands at their store. What a shame. Used to be a great company focused on customer experience. read more

Robert in the running/hiking shoe is amazing! He helped out my son picking his trail running shoes. In addition to that, he also helped him find the best pair of running shoes for his track and field and his street running.
