Big 5 is an interesting spot. If I had a kid where I needed to outfit them for a sport, but they were not overly competitive, I would shop here. Everything seems aimed at the mid-range market. Not toys like you would get at Target or Walmart, but also not the high end equipment you would get at a specialty store. There are also lots of things for game rooms, family picnics... sports equipment that again, it elevated from the toy category but not what you would get at a high end shop. The type of stuff that won't break after one use but also not where you are going to be upset if you forget it at the park. read more

It seems like if you want to buy sporting gear you are pretty much stuck with big corporate stores like Dicks or you have to buy online through Amazon. I'm not really a fan of either one of those options. I'd avoided Big 5 previously because the store is small and cramped and always a mess. I went in there today and was pleasantly surprised to see it was way more organized and seemed to offer some more updated items. I am thinking they may have had some turnover and the new staff knows what they're doing. read more

STORE HOURS : If you want to open later and close earlier than your posted hours as listed on your store window and in your ads, change the posted hours so customers aren't wasting their time and they can then make their purchases at Walmart or Target.. Went there 12/9/23, posted sign hours said close at 9:00 PM and they closed the doors on me at 8:30 PM. So I go back 12/10/23 posted store opening hours 9:30 AM only to stand out front with other customers, to find out they open a 10:00 AM. I don't have anything super positive or super negative to say about Big 5, which is why I have to give them an honest 3-star review. Everyone knows that Big 5 is known for their cheap products and good deals but on the day that we came there, it seemed like nothing was priced below what we could have just bought on Amazon. Given the fact that it's winter season, it's understandable to sell snow products for a higher price but when they're significantly higher than expected it's just quite a disappointment. The upside is that there are a variety to choose from and you can compare the prices with Amazon. Plus, they also have a coupon for $10 off a purchase of $30 (excluding Columbia and a few other name brand items) to help make it a little less expensive for you. Overall, Big 5 has got a lot of products for you to use for a myriad of sports and outdoor related activities but you'll want to purchase them off season to help save on cost. MY QUEST FOR WOMEN'S SNOW PANTS... I was in need of buying my own pair of snow pants for an upcoming snowboarding trip where I did not want to spend too much, but wanted some quality pants that wouldn't rip after one use. let me tell you... I searched far and wide! I first initially searched on amazon and all of those seemed to be poor quality for those under $40 and I could not try on so I opted to not buy online. I then went to nearby stores (REI - best quality, most expensive & Dick's Sporting Goods - middle of REI & Big 5 with pants around $60 and slightly better quality than Big 5). my last stop was at Big 5 (I also happened to get in the mail a day before I went a $10 of $30 purchase!) and was pleasantly surprised! I had not been to Big 5 in years, but they have almost everything packed into this relatively small store!!!! from camping to snow gear to sports gear they had a wide selection. I was going in February so it was nice to see they had a whole rack or two for snow pants and I found a pair of pants for $40 that fit perfect for my height and may not have been as thick as REI/Dick's but it still was a easier and better design but cheaper with a quality that would hold going a few times a year. when checking out I used my coupon for $10 off and to my surprised the pants were also on sale for another $5 off... so in total my good quality snow pants were $25!!!!!!! CAN YOU BEAT THAT?! PROS: -really nice, chill staff and didn't even look down upon me for using a coupon! they even made conversation so I really liked this place -the discounts they normally have! -every couple of weeks I get mailed a coupon for $10 of $30 and this came much in handy! -the variety -low prices -changing rooms (2) -easy, huge parking lot CONS: -none! I don't usually shop at Big 5 but my experience today changed my mind. I stopped by to look at some free weights as with this whole C19 thing my gym closed. I was immediately greeted when I entered. As I was in the dept I had a male employee ask if I was finding everything ok. I wanted a price check on a item and he immediately found me the price. He answered a few questions I had and the price was better than most online sites I looked at. The store was organized and clean. I ended up purchasing my item and used a 20% coupon I found online. This location needs to rehire an entirely new staff or close down. All the signs on the front door of the store and online say the stores closes at 9pm on Fridays. We called the store before coming in to confirm they were open. Get there at 8:40 and the doors are locked. We call, they answer the phone and say they are closed. Ask for a manger and the lady on the phone claims to be the manger. Apparently they just close whenever they want and the posted hours don't actually mean anything and I'm almost certain the woman on the phone was not actually a manger. read more

I love this Big5! Every time I've come here, everybody is incredibly helpful. One time a gentleman stayed with us while we tried on a particular item and stayed until we found the perfect fit. Another time, a lady stayed with us to answer all our questions about a particular item, even if that meant going back and forth to the front to check prices and whatnot. Both were so kind and honestly every time I go to this particular Big5 it been good. If anything, sometimes it's a bit empty. If that's the case, you may need to look for someone to help you. Just go to the front! It's a small store anyways. Once you do, they help right away. Some folks expect workers to follow you around or something. Just ask and they'll help. read more

I have shopped at this store pretty much my whole life and tonight had such a terrible experience that I left and didn't buy anything. There were at least 5 people working and nobody seemed to want to help us. Found the cleats we wanted in the shoe section but when we asked for our size were told that we had to go look for it ourselves in the front. We found what we needed plus a few other items and went to check out. The clerk took a call from what appeared to be another employee and spent her time helping them while we waited. Then the shoes we selected in the back that showed $40 rang up as $64. My husband went to check and tried to get assistance from a clerk named Dillon who was less than thrilled to help and was throwing stuff around. We ended up telling them to cancel the rest of our order. We'll try a different store. Update- got better cleats and better customer service for a better price at Dicks. read more

I frequent this location of this chain store regularly to buy tennis balls and occasionally the New Balance cross training shoes that come in wide for my size. And when I need an inexpensive but decent watch, this is where I first go . There is almost always a sale on tennis balls, though I wait until the Penns (truer bounce, longer lasting on hard court) are on sale. Everyone probably knows they don't carry the latest and greatest of the brands they carry, They tend to carry overstocks and previous years models - that's why the great price when on sale. So, if you're, say, an athletic shoe trendoid, this is not the place for you. This store is usually well stocked, though the popular sale items in your sizes can go pretty fast. This is esp. true during the holidays. The people that work there for the most part are helpful but not usually experts in the items they sell, like at a pricey specialty store, e.g. tennis pro shop or golf pro shop. But if you know what you want, this is a great chain for people like me who don't like to pay retail. Sadly, I see many people walking in here not knowing what they want, don't ask any questions, and probably buy the wrong thing and end up returning it later. So I am flying out of John Wayne for Thanksgiving, like so many others are. (Oh, and I hear they have that new surveillance camera that can see what you look like without your clothes on. Yikes!) The other day, I decided to get a back pack that could fit my larger laptop, a binder, my small camera, small shaving kit, and room for a jacket if the plane gets too cold. I finally make my selection, and take it to the register. It was also about $15 off regular price. It was a Friday evening around 6 PM before going out to dinner. There was no line. I was pleasantly surprised by the help from the guy behind the counter. Turns out he was one of the assistant managers. "Did you check ALL the zippers?" I said, " Yes, I did." He said the back pack I chose was fine for my needs which I explained, He said, "Good - with any backpack, the weakness is often the zippers." As he was talking, he checked a few of the zippers inside. It was great to get dialogue and confirmation from someone that knew his product line. I thanked him for his help, and he said he didn't want me to come back later and return it. Most of the time, the discount store cashiers just take your money and say goodbye. They live for the sale! I understand it cannot compare to REI or those "higher end" sporting stores, but it should still demonstrate good and knowledgeable customer service. I've been to this location several times when I don't feel like spending top dollar for something sports related. On more than one occasion, the employee had little to no knowledge on the products when asked. He then proceeded to read the tag/box description. I can also do that. Either way the selection they have their is scarce and you have to pick thru stuff to find what you want. Went in there to buy a bean bag toss game (aka corn hole.) When I lugged the 50 pound game to the register I found all the employees standing in a circle talking to each other. I placed the game down on the ground at the closest register and the employee who decided to check me out then proceeded to ask me to move to the register in which HE was closest to (mind you , I was the only costumer at the register) All the employees watched me pick up this 50 pound game, and did not offer to help. Shocked at the lack of costumer service I sarcastically said "I'm okay guys, don't worry about it." To which again, no one offered to help. After the transaction I was again disappointed that no one offered to help me take this heavy game to my car, which was parked all the way at the other side of the parking lot. I had to stop to rest many times on the way to my car, and could not see other cars in the parking lot do to the size of the game. To be honest I felt like I was bothering and inconveniencing the employees. They did not make me feel welcomed or appreciated. read more

As I was standing there waiting to be helped the guy behind the counter was too busy socializing with another colleague. Normally I don't waste my time with reviews, but he made eye contact with us and continued on with his conversation. We looked around the store for about 5 minutes and came back to see if they were done, they weren't. He then was aware we were waiting and asked what we need. My family and I have been coming to this and the Orange location for many years. I prefer to give my business to the smaller Big 5 chain than the larger big box retailer up the road. I recently purchased fishing gear from Ivan and his team and was quite thrilled with the personal service. While I believe the Orange location is more accommodating with price adjustments, customer service, etc., the manager I worked with today (on a Monday) was not able to do any sort of price adjustment for a pair of cleats. Not sure if this is discretionary? or another sr. manager would need to be preset for her to do that adjustment? However I presented the prices from another chain in the area and asked if they could get the price inline with their competition, which she was not willing to do. Unfortunately this manager and associate could care less that money was walking out the door due to a small discrepancy in price ($10 cheaper up the street, as an e-blast customer you get only so many coupons, which I used on the fishing gear. I suppose Big 5 may be counting on that to compete? and not adjust pricing when needed). I was very disappointed that depending on the store, or manager they could do right by the customer, but this particular manager could not. I have not wrote this location off my list just yet, but I plan to ask other managers for their input next time. read more

I went there today and I thought they were okay. Maybe 3.5 stars, rounded up. It's a bit larger than the one in Irvine. However the area is a little more sketchy. Granted, this is Orange County sketchy, which is nothing compared to like the inner city. It was average cleanliness. It wasn't very busy at all but it was the middle of the afternoon during the slow hours. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. I did have to call them over a few times and they'd help and then go back across the store, but they did help. I tried on some shoes, didn't like them but they looked nice and good prices. I recommend this place. Although I prefer the Irvine store even though this place has a wider selection. read more

I am genuinely surprised that I am giving a Big 5 store four stars. Normally, I try to avoid Big 5 because the stores are cluttered and the staff is unhelpful. While this store has a lot of stuff, the aisles were clear and the shelves were fairly neat. The staff was very helpful and asked if we needed assistance several times. We came here to get soccer gear for our boys. Big 5 has a package that includes cleats, shin guards, and a ball for $30 to $40 depending on the brand you choose. We went for the middle priced package that has Diadora equipment for about $6 off the price if the items are purchased alone. We also picked up some socks, a ball bag, water bottles, and cones since my wife is the coach. (I guess that means I will be the one quartering oranges for half time) The deal is decent, and they had plenty of stock. I really was impressed because the staff stopped by a couple time to see if we were finding everything we needed. I saw them treating other customers the same way. The only hitch we had was at checkout. The person on the register had a tough time figuring out how to apply the discounts on the soccer packages. It took longer than it should have, but I think the person was new. Hopefully, she will get better with time. While our check out took longer than it should have, I will say that the staff did call up extra help as soon as they saw a line was building behind us. Again, they seem to have a better handle on customer service than most Big 5 stores I have experienced. Big 5 tends to have decent sales on shoes. Next time I am need, I will check out this location again. read more

I have been buying camping equipment, ammo, exercise equipment, shoes and clothing over the years from Big 5, and I usually go to the Tustin location. Their handling of a mistake in a recent ad led me to write this review. For months I had considered buying a rifle they advertised from time to time. Reviews of the rifle in question were unanimously high, although it was faulted for not including accessories some reviewers thought should be standard equipment for the price. Lo and behold, Big 5's ad showed it on sale at a very competitive price INCLUDING those accessories (hard case, iron sights, and Picatinny rail set). That did it-- I decided to buy it. The manager on duty showed me the rifle, and he noticed it did not have the hard case as advertised. He called the head office to find out why, even though another employee said the ad was a mistake and that I wouldn't get a case for it. After the 10-day waiting period I picked up the rifle, but they still did not have a response from the head office. Apparently they asked the manufacturer to ship them a case, but the manufacturer had none left. The new manager, Jason, called to tell me they'd give me another hard case free of charge because they couldn't get one from the manufacturer. I appreciate their commitment to customer satisfaction. They could have given up and told me, "Sorry, it was a misprint. How about if we give you 10% off a case of your choice?" That would have been a poor response. As it was, they came through with flying colors. They have earned my business, so I will continue shopping there and recommending them. read more

Spoke with Isaac who stated they had it (last one in stock/clearance item), and that he'd pull it aside for me. When I got to the store (on Black Friday, no less), Isaac pulled the item from the back, brought it to the register for me, and even wheeled it out on a dolly and loaded it into my truck. The Labor Day sale was the day I planned to shop here today. If you have a beach or camping outing or an active event set sometime after first weekend of September, then this is the perfect day to visit. Or you can just stock up for next years summer. I signed up online last week to get the email printable coupons for their sale...but they also have it on their website. This location is a bigger one than a couple others in the area, which is why I came. I figured there'd be lots of good options for what I was looking for...and I was right. I was able to snag a nice cooler for less than 1/2 of the original price. Was also looking at the canopies that were $50, their cheap beach umbrellas, and small body boards for $15...so I got one of those too. Staff is helpful & asked if I needed help while I shopped, and there was no line at 6pm...so I was in & out. This is my go to Big 5 location in OC. My visit at this location of Big 5 got 2 stars from me. I called for a couple of items for the winter gear, the male whom I spoke with told me they had it in stock. So as I make that trip to this store I find out that they don't have the items. I then proceed to look for similar items and found what I was looking for either it was poor communication or the employee did not bother to look. My experience here started out good we found a good deal on a rifle that we wanted. When I went to pick our gun up after 10 days the manager on duty said no one was certified to release the gun to me. Disappointed I told him I would come back in a few days. Had that been the end this would be a two star review, but another manager named Jose called me and apologized for the inconvenience. When I came in to get my gun Jose again apologized, he got our paperwork done and us out the door fast, plus told us about a great deal on ammo which we stocked up on. read more
