Prices are fair and they often have great sales. The grand kid tells me his old boogy board got crunched at the Huntington Beach outing and please be able to get a new one for an upcoming vacation? Big 5 Sporting Goods on Harbor Blvd is a big store and I am sure they will have plenty to choose from. We went inside and were greeted and sent to the side of the store where the boards are located. When we got there we were somewhat disappointed because there was only three boards on display, two different companies. We looked at features and size. He selected the one that was light grayish in color and thought the feel and size would best fit. Done, good choice, and we go to the front to pay. The young lady Mariana was very helpful and smiled when I showed her my email from Big 5 for a discount. Big 5....man have I spent a boat load of money in this place. Never occurred to yelp it but hey, let's see what happens!? Okay so, how do we approach this? By section I guess... Swimming: good for goggles, ear plugs and toys. Not so much trunks and fins. Shoes: loads of shoes, mostly crap but some good deals can be found. Good luck finding your size! Weights: excellent place to buy weights. Camping: pretty damn legit. Not exactly REI but it probably has what you came for and it's probably cheap. Ammo and guns: pretty weak. Not a great selection of fire arms or ammo and what they do have is either cheap quality (guns) or to expensive (ammo). They usually have pretty nice knives for cheap. The rest of the store is kinda the same. They generally have what you're looking for, just the cheap versions of everything. Customer service: this is usually someone's first job and almost always their first managers job. I've never seen the same person twice leaving me to believe they have unreal turnover. As long as you keep your expectations low, you probably won't be disappointed. And oh ya, you can buy a fishing license here! read more

So I was near this big 5 and needed gloves. Went in and showed my coupon and couldn't get it because the date was not on the picture, it had the barcode but the cashier didn't even attempt to scan it to see if it would have work . Found online that there was a pellet gun in stock at this location. Called numerous times to verify if they had it in stock but the phone lines were busy the whole time. So I drove over an hour and a half to get it. When I got there, they checked and said the online system was wrong and they were out, when I asked the manager if there was anything she can do, she just shrugged her shoulders and said the only thing she could do was to try to have one shipped from out of state but would take 3-4 days then I would need to drive back to get it. All I wanted to do was take the Firearms Safety Certificate test. They informed me to take the test I also needed to purchase a gun (lol wtf). I agreed to the odd terms because all the other stores are closed. So they told me to wait for the blonde girl who is the only one who could help me. Anyways, after waiting for 20 mins for the gun specialist (blonde girl) in the firearms section said she would "help me next". Instead she made me wait over an hour while she hid in the back taking care of who knows what ...probably with the hope that I would give up and leave. She succeeded. This is probably why she took off her name tag lol. If you like having your chain yanked for hours and treated like a piece of trash I highly recommend this store! I wish you had more locations or were closer in distance. You're the first establishment I think of for any type of sporting goods. We went in a bit lost as to what we needed in fishing poles and tackle. I can't remember the gentleman's name, but he helped us choose just the right reasonably priced poles. He understood our needs perfectly and didn't try to oversell us on anything. He even rigged one of the poles for us and was so pleasant. Will definitely be back for other purchases. read more

Wow!!! In attentive is an understatement. Family of four hung around shoe department like loitering vagrants for about 15 minutes waiting for some help. We gave up. Upon approaching with items we are purchasing I said to the checkout girl (Angelica). "I feel as if we could have strolled out the doors with our merchandise and no one would have noticed". Angelica didn't even bat an eye. At this point I felt the need to escalate my comments. I said, " Angelica, this is going to be a strong Yelp review". Still nothing from Angelica. After going to this big 5 I can tell why brick and mortar stores are going out of business. Tried to pick up a pair of football gloves and was told that there were some in the back but I­t­ was too far back in storage to get. If you have inventory go and get I­t­ and sell I­t­ to a customer who is willing to pay. I've never heard of a retail store that had inventory to sell but didn't want to sell I­t­ because the box was hard to get in storage. My advice is call before you go to the store.
