7/10/25- It's ironic- I never used to shop at an Rei when I lived in Elk Grove, Ca.. probably because it was further away.. Since living here, and it's right next to Costco.. I'm a frequent shopper.. Purchased some Hoka's back in November- but one side started ripping - so I returned and purchased another On shoes.. Surprisingly they did not fit.. (yet I have four pairs that are the same size and fit).. go figure- Returned them and started browsing in store.. Just my luck- found a nice On pair- I like these because it's really not messy on the upper.. Noticed an email on the Rei app about the new On Cloudsurfer 2 trail running-.. REI = Recreational Equipment, Inc. Quality/Quantity - We are members. Current promotion, spend $50, become a member and get a $30 giftcard. What a great deal. And how do you NOT spend $50 on every visit here... Came here to check out bikes, mountain bikes, e-bikes, etc. But ending up buying a new boot on clearance. Atmosphere - Good size location. Plenty of private parking. Service - Mostly self service. The shoe salesperson, the only person helping 10 people, did a good job. There were 4 people working in the bike area, and no one acknowledged me?!?! And these bikes go for like $7k. I am not sure I want an e-bike yet; I just want to stay as young and long as possible. Very friendly salesperson. Price - $150 ish. Good deal for the quality of boot I got. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1938! I like the COOP concept and $30 lifetime membership model. I have been shopping at REI for over 25 years. The store is still well stocked and the staff is very helpful. At times I have thought that the prices were a little high, but i have to remember that being a member gets some money back in co-op dollars. I needed some leg gaiters for snowshoeing and I was considering ordering form Amazon, but I figured it was better to try them on in person and support a brick-and-mortar store. I am glad I did, I was able to find a pair that will work well and last a long time. There wasn't the size I needed on the floor, but a friendly staff member went to the stock room and found one. I will continue to support a store that always has high quality products and top-notch service. read more

I recently went into REI to check their backpacking backpacks for my son who will be working in forest conservation for the summer. While we were browsing the selection the outdoor gear expert immediately found us and offered to help fit him for his pack, so we took her up on here offer. She spend the next 45mins with us to explain the differences in brands, sizes, and thoroughly explained a proper pack fitting..she even gave us a tip on when to purchase to get a great deal. I understand some of their prices can be a bit steep but their REI branded items really is great quality and much more affordable than some of the prestigious brands they carry. At first the clothing felt very overpriced then realized it was made in a certified fair trade factory. I will happily pay extra knowing that the product isn't made using underpaid workers or child labor in abhorrent conditions. Paying fair wages and prioritizing environmental sustainability should be more important than cheap clothing. read more

Bike service is atrociously slow and irresponsible (was originally double charged when I bought it, and they've had it in service for 5 days without getting a simple derailleur replacement done, I've had to go in and request updates on two separate occasions) selection of inventory is poor, new layout doesn't make sense, and the refurbished gear is lackluster and dispersed throughout the store. not worth the money, not worth the effort. go to scheels. read more

Stocks the best outdoor equipment money can buy and charges what you would expect for that quality. Cool thing is if you are an outdoor enthusiast, buying a membership and becoming a "customer/owner" means you get some of the money you spend at REI back at the end of the year. Honestly, they are mostly too expensive for me to shop there for basic stuff but when I need something that won't break, that will keep me warm and stand up to the elements, this is the place. One tip is to hit up their end of season sales. You can get some good items for pretty reasonable prices at those times. The amount of staff and their width and depth of knowledge is also impressive, so if I want to know how a thing works, where it is made, how it operates in the field, there is likely someone there who is either very familiar with the products or uses it themselves. If you ever went into an outdoor store and wondered why no one seems to know what they are talking about, it's because all those people work at REI. read more

I have always enjoyed shopping at REI. This specific one has always clean and organized. Today specifically we had a very good experience with my wife looking for some Tevas. A young man named Michael was in the shoe department and was very attentive and helpful. I was a member from a while back but Michael did a great a great job reminding us of all the benefits we get. Specifically he reminded us that members have up to a year to return things which made my wife decide to take the sandals and give them a good try out in real situations instead of just walking up and down the store. REI is definitely pricey but the quality of products is great and there are great member benefits. read more

I recently had my bike serviced at REI Reno. First time, so I was a bit apprehensive. My bike is a 35 yo Specialized Hardrock, so I didn't want it messed up. I couldn't have been more pleased with the experience. They did an assessment with me standing there and gave me an estimate which I thought was fair. They (Gary and Alden) explained the scope of what they would do. They finished on time and the final cost aligned exactly with the estimate. The bike rides great! I couldn't be happier. I love REI! I've been a co-op member for a lot of years and it is so worth it. It's a winning combination of super great products, easy returns, and excellent customer service. I recently ordered a bunch of shoes online that I had to return and it was a pain- but the person who helped me was super patient and kind. I also got some very great sunglasses recently for only $25! Score. I love that they rent snowshoes and lead snow shoe trips. Parking is easy and the store has good bathrooms- always ups my estimation of a store. read more

It's always good to have an REI within a short driving distance. When I resided in the Bay Area, I spent quite a bit of time at the REI outposts in Pleasant Hill/Concord and Berkeley. Since moving to Genoa, I've mostly shopped online, but with a recent trip to Iceland coming up, I needed to find some rain pants pronto and in person. My drive to Reno also included a COVID test (PCR) at RNO, which is actually pretty close to the REI. My REI visit was approached from South (where I was also looking at the Trading Post), so when I popped out onto Plumb after my visit and heading to the airport (thanks to Google Maps), it was quite a surprise. My other discovery is that REI is right next to Costco. I was in and out of this REI quickly. I knew what I wanted, the nice staff person found it quickly, and after a complete tour around the store, I checked out before I could say "Bob's Your Uncle". As it turned out, I didn't use the rain pants in Iceland, although that could have quickly turned out to be the case. It's always good to pack the right layers, because you never know, especially in a Country where the distance between beauty and danger can be a very fine line. Post trip, I'm now personally well stocked for future hikes and canoe trips. But I'm sure some new opportunity will come up that will require another trip to REI. Now if I can only avoid most of those freeze dried/just add water meals...... read more

I personally really enjoy the concept of REI, and do enjoy their membership. My lady and I took a trip out to South Lake Tahoe a month ago and had an exceptional time. A small blizzard had ripped across the night we arrived leaving all the trails freshly packed, so we decided to go and rent some snowshoes from REI. Danielle was beyond incredible. She was insightful about the gear, showed us ways of identifying snowshoes for our preference, and had great enthusiasm in educating us on the nuances of the equipment. I definitely wanted to let her know that she's doing a excellent job and next time we're out that way, we'll make sure to visit again! read more

I've been a fan of REI since the moment I stepped in the store many years ago. If you love the outdoors, you will love it here. They have gear for everything to make outdoors activities more enjoyable, safe and doable. Some things you can find- camping gear, bikes, trailers for kids, outdoor clothing, high quality footwear, hats, tents, sleeping bags, chairs, stoves, freeze dried camping foods, navigation books, yummy snacks, mountain climbing gear...you name it. I became a member ($20/year) to reap their perks-annual member dividend gets you money back on you purchases, classes and outings available, epic exclusive member deals and exclusive events. Even if I don't need anything, I will take the whole family here and make a trip out of it. There's always something cool to look at. They also have a repair shop for bikes that I used for my jogging stroller tires. They did an awesome job and my stroller held up for so long. I went from never stepping into REI in my entire life, to being a huge fangirl who is now a member, with the app on her phone, and has wishlists made inside the app curated to my adventure dreams. My friend had me come into rent some backpacking gear so I could try out that type of adventuring. I rented a pack and a tent, and a sleeping pad, and a few other essentials. Their rental people were super nice and measured me so I'd have the right sized gear. Everything worked like a charm and the staff at REI were so helpful. I suspect they might have been more excited about my trip than I was (heading out) and they were so curious about how I enjoyed my experience when I returned. I'm now a lifetime member and and excited to keep gearing up and learn about new fun ways to get outside with the help of REI. read more

I love rei! I have been a member for a while and love to come here for all my outdoorsy equipment. Even though rei tends to be more expensive than competing brands such as Costco, and at times even Patagonia, the quality is great and the customer service is almost always very helpful. It's never insanely busy when I've been, and even at times where there are more people than usual, there's always an employee around to help with any questions. I love the array of goods they have. They have everything from equipment to clothes to dog supplies to games to food. You name it! It's fun to walk around and make lists of all the things you didn't know you needed, but that you all of a sudden really want. My only complaint is they no longer allow dogs. I don't know if this is a new rule, or just now being enforced but it's definitely a bummer. I have been shopping with rei for years and have always brought my dog and never once been told to step out except one of my most recent visits. Sometimes when I'm about to go on a hike and have my dog in the car and realize I need to get something, I would go to REI but will now have to go to other options. I understand if this is a company wide policy and will definitely comply to make others comfortable, however I do think it's a bummy rule and will lead to loss of some business! read more

I asked my neighbor boy why he wasn't out riding his bicycle (he lives with his grandmother and the grandfather had passed away a few years ago) he's 10 years old so when I see him I always check in on him and his brother and his grandmother to make sure they have everything that they need. Normally I just change out their filters on her Honda and do other small projects for them. With that said today I took him down to REÍ in my car to get his two mountain bike tires fixed today. It was super easy to get in and out without an appointment and the people there are always so incredibly helpful. read more

The bike team was helpful and kind; however, when we took out $200 worth of purchases to the check-out counter, we were greeted by a very rude and aggressive woman. Maybe she was having a bad day? Regardless, we won't be back to spend our hard earned money where it's not appreciated and where the customer is clearly taken for granted. There's not one thing they sell you can't get online. Like to shop local but only where we are valued and greeted with kindness and respect. I cannot recommend. read more

Perks of membership are 10% off, members only special events, garage sales, classes, rentals, cash back and etc. According to their website REI gives almost 70% of it's profits back to environmental causes and events. Believe it or not a lifetime membership is just a mere $20.00. This store offers Classes, outings, and events and travel. They have offered travel since 1987. According to their website they have local guides that will lead you on a spontaneous and immersive fun filled outdoor adventure. They offer four different types; Classic Europe, North America, Women's adventures and Outdoor. They look pretty cool to me. We were in need of new hiking boots and a new back pack for boy scout camping. All the employee's that we met were extremely out going, friendly, informative and truly loved their job. It was clear that all the employees were out door experts of their own. We tried on boots and were informed of what type of boot was good for what type of environment. He then introduced us to another employee who helped us figure out what type of backpack and how much weight it would hold. They had weights to stick in the backpack so you could see how it felt when weighted. I think one of the employees names was Andy. Plus when we were there we earned a free $20.00 lifetime membership for spending over $100. This offer however expired on March 23. How awesome is that. The customer service is on point here! Outdoors equipment is not lacking at this store! I mostly utilize this store for my outdoors clothing and hiking gear. Overall the selection at this REI is off the charts and the staff is always so knowledgeable with all of their new products. I'm a long-time REI Member, but first time shopping at this location (8/12/23 from 12 pm-2 pm PST). Michael (Shoe Department) and Michelle (Sunglasses Department) were engaging, knowledgeable and helpful. However, the 2 white/males in Men's Clothing made me feel very uncomfortable. They did not approach or speak to me the whole time and I witnessed the smaller of the two lurking within eye-shot of me and we made eye contact at least a dozen times. In contrast, they approached the White shoppers in a friendly and helpful manner. REI not a good look. Reno is fast becoming a diverse metropolitan region and personal politics have no place in a Retail setting. read more

The shoe team was helpful and knowledgeable. When I we went to the check-out counter, we were greeted by a young man. My husband gave him his REI number but was told to present ID, since our REI dividend was over $20 (it was $24). My husband did not have his wallet so we asked if a photo of the DL was ok - nope. We could provide all the information on the account and the DL picture would be my husbands, but nope! All "for our protection". I am not sure if I have ever been asked for my ID when I clearly state the REI # and it clearly only has my husbands name on it! Yes, in hindsight, we should have asked for the manager. The customer service was poor. I try to purchase at the stores and not on-line, but honestly, no one hassles you on-line! REI - you could do better than this! read more

This is the all outdoor store if you are looking for your next gadget or try before you buy, with exceptions of course. Now it's a little pricey but what quality gear of anything isn't pricey? You can easily get help, suggestions, and thoughtful feedback if you are looking for it, or you can be on your own. It depends on your experience. I recently tried on hiking boots and bought online because I could wait for them but I did buy other outdoor gear for an upcoming trip. I also did a little research in gear. I like this store and location, easy to get to and hours are great too. I have high regard for REI products and I think this is a solid store with good service. read more

I have been a REI member before the Reno location opened. I love their staff and products. Today I needed a replacement pair of sandals. Kaylyn in the shoe department was kind and helpful. She quickly assessed my needs and got my shoe size. With the aid of her digital handheld device she just scanned the barcodes of the sandals I wanted to look at and she could tell me what versions she had in the back in my size. I tried them out and was able to walk out the store with them after I paid for them with a discount from using my membership dividend. read more

Bought some great new hiking shoes and socks. The salesperson was so helpful and a really good variety to choose from and try on. A fake rock wall really lets you test out the grip on a downhill as well ~ very important to make sure I like the traction and my toes don't rub. It's fun to browse through all their outdoor stuff too - quite a variety. I bought one pair of merino wool socks the salesperson recommended to go with the shoes and, if they work, I'll get a couple more. read more

REI has a good selection of outdoor gear for a variety of applications. They sell premium brands but those brands only leave the store with you when you are willing to pay their premium prices. REI is at the peak of retail pricing and only when something is on sale is there anything worth buying in the store. Online prices are literally half what they charge in store. Customer service is thin but good when someone actually has time to help you. As you can tell i'm not a huge fan. But thats because i'm not a huge fan of paying the highest possible dollar for gear. read more

I've avoided REI because it had the air of expensive and snobby outdoorsy stuff. I'm not that guy, I like the affordable and the accessible to the regular everyday guy. Well either I am becoming just a snob in all areas of my life, or I was totally wrong about REI. They give GREAT service, and they are well stocked in lots of stuff. I bought my last two pairs of hiking boots at REI and when one of them had a defect, they were quick to resolve the issue. It's a little cramped on the store floor and maybe compared to other cities they don't have the same size of footprint, but we are lucky to have this business in Reno. read more

As an avid Hiker and Backpacker, REI quickly became one of my favorite stores to pick up gear in. They have a vast selection of items and the quality of said items are second to none. In my experience, the employees are usually very knowledgeable about their products and are helpful in giving you advice and options. While I am a member of the Co-Op ($20 one time fee), I feel that the quality of their products are good, but their prices could be better. Their a bit too much for me as it pertains to certain products. So example, I purchased a packable floor mat to sleep on for around $75 bucks but a little while later, I saw the same item being sold on Amazon for $55. That's my fault for not doing my research, but it does provide an example to their on the higher end prices. That said, though, I do recommend REI to anyone who's serious about their gear. Especially us backpackers. It may be a bit more here, but at the same time, you can't put a price on comfort and safety. read more
