The last few pairs I paid $25 each and they are now $40... But glad they still have the brand I like. When my kids were younger and when they first learned how to ski, we shopped here for the discounted prices for brand name items. It helped that it was on the way to Mt. Rose. Atmosphere - Discounted sporting goods store. They carry random discounted stuff, so you have to get lucky to find something you want, especially seasonal gear. Place does not change much, just the seasonal stuff. Plenty of parking. Open 7 days a week from 10am to 6pm. Service - Many team members working today, all were nice, helpful, and we even cracked a few jokes. Price - $40 + tax. We needed to get her knee pad quickly for a wrestling tournament. My son hurt his knee, but did not want to stop wrestling. This place did not have one, but they called the one over in Sparks and they had the one we needed. It was very nice of them. Also I receive daily sales emails from big five. And I wanted to get my other son a nice BB gun for his birthday. In California this last summer, my nephew took them out target practicing with a BB gun and the kids have been talking about it since. Big five had a Winchester model with a scope that is dual ammo. It shoots both pallets as well as BBs. Normally it's $140, sale price $79. It seemed I was one day past the coupon discount. I'll give two stars for actually having what I needed after going 3 other stores to find it; however, the the horrific service you receive is not worth the stop. We entered the store looking for hiking shoes for my 10-year old. We have struck out everywhere else in Reno today. Usually can find what we need at this store, the kid in the shoe department was super helpful and polite. That's where it ended though. We get it, COVID, everyone has to wear a mask. We are wearing masks. Myself, my husband, and my 10-year old. While talking to to my family my mask falls down, so I am constantly pulling it up. I'm doing the best I can, I feel like most of us are. But no, still out of all the other customers in the store, the manager approaches me to tell me I am required to keep my mask over my nose. Well first off, I am very well aware of how to wear a mask. Second, are you actually seriously going to harass your customers who ARE wearing their mask and ARE trying even though they DON'T want to? Save it for some one who walked in without a mask and wants to argue with you. It's truly unfortunate because we were shopping for more items that we didn't come in for and would have absolutely spent more money, but because of this really awkward uncomfortable encounter I was absolutely done being in the store. Perfect the cashier isn't much better! She was all agitated but it's absolutely our fault the POS won't allow for Samsung pay and then wouldn't read the actual credit card. She insisted on my husband handing the card over, but your manager just yelled at me to keep my mask over my nose and you want to put your grubby little fingers on our stuff? Hmm... I feel like this took a weird turn. The answer was no, the card won't be handed over. Meanwhile all of this is occurring employees are living their best lives having the best conversations with each other, grouped up in their clicks. I wonder if managing your employees better and NOT micromanaging your customers would be profitable? I had already put $200.00 worth of merch up front, right? Then I asked the manager to open a box so my wife could hold this firearm and make sure it was comfortable in her little hand. Generally I visit this store once or twice a year for gifts. They have good deals when you know what you're buying and use a coupon if available. Staff are generally helpful and friendly if they're not super busy. They do have a ton of stuff crammed into a small location so if you go in here around the holidays it can get really crowded and claustrophobic inside. Some of the items they sell are good buys when taking into account price vs. quality, but they do have stuff that is not, so just be aware of what you're buying as not everything is top notch quality. read more

High Five for Big 5....maybe next time. Been coming here for years and they always seem to have great deals on just about everything related to most outdoor activities. Anytime I've priced out items, they seem to beat their competitor pricing (most of the time) by a good margin. When walking in, we are usually greeted (Hi, welcome to Big 5) but this time we were not...maybe they were just busy. Proceeded to the back of the store where the shoes are located and found a great pair of Nike shoes for a great price due to their sales! The associates that helped us were very helpful and friendly. Made our way to the front of the store where an associate named Marco helped us check out but I have to say; this was the most awkward and most uncomfortable check out I have ever experienced here. When walking up to his register, "hi" were the only words that came out of his mouth and as he continued to check our items out; he had his hand on his mouth the entire time and didn't say a word. We paid for our items and handed us the receipt (hand still on mouth) and just starred at it as I folded it up and put it in my wallet. Still, not a word from him as we proceeded to leave (with his his hand on his mouth still) Maybe he was new and overly nervous. Management, take notice and help him out. read more

I was recently at this Reno location, store #051, and the staff there seemed deeply resentful of doing their jobs or even being there. It started when I called the store ahead of my visit. An employee calling herself Rachel answered the phone. I told her that I was calling to see if they had water shoes in stock. She replied with "we might." and I waited a count of ten, expecting her to maybe say she would check or what size I needed. Nothing. So I replied, "well that's what I'm calling to find out." She let out a heavy exasperated sigh like she really didn't want to be helping anyone and I was ruining her day by asking her to check. And she finally said "fine, what size?". I told her I was looking for a size 1 and a size 5. She left me on hold for several seconds and then came back and said "we only have size 2" ...I was actually surprised she checked so quickly, but I didn't question it. I told her size 2 would probably work if it was all they had and if she could please put a pair on hold and I would be there in 15 minutes. She lets out another deeply annoyed sigh like maybe I just called her at home on her day off and asked her to hand sew me a pair in 15 minutes. She asks my name and tells me they will be on hold and then abruptly hangs up. I was very patient with her the whole time on the call, and the whole time on the call she was extremely rude and resentful. I show up to the store 15 minutes later, and ask for the pair they have on hold. They said there isn't anything on hold and one girl goes to the back to ask Rachel who won't come out of the back (probably didn't want to look me in the eye after how she behaved). I know this because I had told them Rachel put them on hold and that's why they went to get her, and the other girl said she won't come out. Then the cashier asked "well where did she put them?" and the other girl replied "she didn't." So I ask them politely, can you just tell me where they are and I'll get it myself? She shows me where they are and behold....a FULL section of water shoes, every size you could want mens and womens. I turn and ask her..."Why did Rachel say you were completely out of water shoes except for size 2 when clearly you are FULLY stocked, and Rachel even put me on hold when she claimed she went to check?" The cashier replied "oh well someone must have just put these all out, there probably wasn't any out when you called." It was painfully obvious they knew what happened and were trying to cover for their dishonest and lazy co-worker aka Rachel. I looked her strait in the eye and asked, "you guys stocked 200 pairs of water shoes in less than 15 minutes, and you also didn't see anyone doing it?" She flushed and and just murmured that she didn't know, obviously embarrassed that she was caught in the lie not realizing that I had called only 15 minutes ago. I get the pairs we needed and check out. If we were not in a hurry we would have just left and spent our money at Dicks Sporting goods, who also had them in stock and wasn't too lazy to check for us. I mentioned to the cashier that someone should talk to Rachel about lying about checking and that is probably costing the store money, and she just sheepishly replies "I'm sorry you feel that way." At a time like this when many want to work but can't, you'd think that people who actually have jobs wouldn't be so loathsome to do their job. And from a manager/owner's perspective I would be furious that my staff was literally turning away business because they couldn't be bothered with basic custom service. read more

I really like buying my work shoes at Big 5, it's always great sales and easy in and out! I think they may need some extra help on weekends especially in Shoes, I left on my day of check in and unfortunately I purchased the wrong size, too tight. I took my them back on Sunday early afternoon and man they were overwhelmed in Shoe department. It took quite a while before I was able to pick up proper size. I will continue to go back and if you're looking for some great shoes always check them out. Big 5 Sporting Goods is a good store for most your athletic needs. I usually go here for my running and cross training shoe wear. They usually have better sale deals that it's big store counter parts. Also I looked for a pair of shoes online and found them with a discount but with shipping and the waiting time for the shipping. Your better off buying here. Not to mention they could ship off the wrong pair of shoes. Which could be a pain in the butt. That is why I prefer to buy my shoes local and at the stores. I have had the wrong pair sent to me too many times. I am the type to really use the crap out of my shoes and if I get the shoe late how am I suppose to workout. I know I'm rambling now but online purchases pisses me off sometimes haha. It's not all bad experiences. But as I said I prefer getting my workout shoes at the store location. Parking isn't bad here. I have never had an issue finding a spot to park. I always try to get the one right by the door and 80% of the time I get it. The staff is very helpful and I have been coming to this Big 5 since high school. Man high school that seemed like 100 years ago haha. Came in for a quick look for snow gear to go sledding in. They didn't have much left, but I found some cheap snow pants and a jacket that was on sale. I'm glad I was able to try some stuff on over my clothing really quickly. I'm sure a lot of people do it. Lol It worked out well! Great local sporting goods store. Its way better than the overpriced barren wasteland known as Sports Authority. The store has a wide selection with a little bit of everything. The prices are usually really good. They also always have a sale going on and I check the weekly sale ad online to spot any great deals that I might need. The only downside is that the store is jam packed with merchandise which sometimes makes it difficult to find exactly what you are looking for. The store is generally a mess and hard to navigate but when you need that thing. That one thing - like boxing wraps or a tube to float the river - Big 5 has your back! In December I went to Big 5 to buy some shoes. I bought a pair of Coleman Hiking Boots, the price was exceptional. I got a pair of slippers with traction, excellent for Reno with snow and ice through the winter. They are lined and keep my toes warm without the need for socks. I got another pair of every day shoes, they are nice. But my favorites are Rug Exp Journey Plus 4336228, they have Velcro closures. Excellent for a young man of 63 earth years. Well I had a little issue with them today. I took them to the store and spoke to the Manager. He was very polite. Asked me my size and got me a new pair to exchange for my current pair. The woman that rang me out on the exchange was very nice. I told her I had just polished the old pair, hehe. Well now I have a new pair. Nothing like a new pair of shoes, soft and comfy. Got a very nice coupon for Big 5 and, needing new shoes, and having had good experiences with them in the past, headed to this outlet, closest to my home. It is non-imposing building, sitting well back from South Virginia, not far from the Atlantis Casino. Inside, a manager greeted me, confirmed the coupon was good and off I went, to the shoe department. Craig, the salesperson, was overwhelmed with about 5 customers simultaneously, but he was always professional, courteous and willing to head back into the stockroom for a customer who wanted to "try just one more pair". Took me about 45 minutes to settle on three pairs of good quality footwear, including Dr. Scholl's and Nike. There is a very good selection of all types: Women's, Men's, Children's as well as great signage indicating not just sizing but also widths - there are many Extra Wide offerings -as well as type of shoe, purpose, as in walking, training, etc., and which are on markdown.
