Poor customer service or store policy. Although I live in California, sometimes I visit the Reno area to visit friends. Being able to shoot more variety of guns at the range has been one of the activities I enjoy much more in Nevada as opposed to CA. Usually Big 5 had been my go to places in Northern California when it comes to purchasing basic store goods as customer service has always been on point, prices are generally good, etc. My experience shopping at this particular location was unfortunately subpar. This specific location wanted to check my ID when I attempted to buy some ammo on sale. When I showed him my California ID I was immediately told they can't sell it to me. I am curious, is this a store policy or personal decision? Places like Scheels, Sportsman Warehouse and local gun stores/range (which usually has higher ammo price that I try to avoid) only cares about buyer's age, not where they come from. Yes, I understand that California has an ammo background check but that's in California. Did this specific store associate or Big 5 as general decide to enforce the California Gun and Ammo law across the entire country? In that case, why don't you post a sign that says Big 5 will follow CA Gun and Ammo law. How about even impose a background check on ammo purchase in Nevada? It's hard to believe that Big 5 would discriminate a California ID when it comes to ammo sales although that the ammo is to be purchased and used in the state of Nevada. Even if I were to bring it to California, is it that even Big 5's business to worry about what I do with it? One of a freedom being an American is our right to bear arms - even when certain law restricts our right in California, at least Nevada is still the free state. Apparently, it seems like this specific location doesn't believe so. And I happily took my business to Scheels and Sportsman warehouse without experiencing any issues at all. read more

A fantastic 5 Star shopping experience at Big 5 Sporting Goods today in Sparks. I went in to find my very first pickle ball paddle. The store was clean and filled with so many great things to see as well as any sports equipment, accessory, camping tents and what a wall of shoes!...so many shoes for every sport. I started with the shoe section. Assistant manager Jose, helped me find my Adidas court shoes. Next, I needed help with Apparel. Assistant Manager Andre, with his knowledge and kind personality picked out 3 cool Activ 8 sports bras for me, and They fit! How great is that! I bought them all! Then I tried on shorts and got 2 pairs to go with my new sports bras. Great looking apparel. Great prices! I can't tell you what a great shopping experience it is to find the size you need in apparel, so you can feel comfortable in your clothing when you start a new sport. Thank you Andre. I still needed a pickle ball paddle, which is why I came into the store. Haha. Mary, the awesome cashier researched for me, which pickle ball paddle I would want as a beginner. Also I told her I wanted the paddle to grow grow my skills. I chose a Gamma Odyssey. A cool green starting paddle with a good grip. Sn excellent choice for players of all levels. It is also USAPA Approved. Excellent customer service and research Mary. I love my new Pickle ball paddle and ball set. Assistant manager Daryl helped me choose my Head impulse goggles. He adjusted them for me so I knew they fit correctly and also told me these goggles would protect my eyes even from the side. Thank you Daryl. Four awesome employees helped me shop for all of my Pickle ball equipment, shoes, paddle, apparel, goggle and balls. I got a coupon in the mail for $10 off $50 purchase so that's 20%. I decided to go this weekend, and this morning I found a flash sale with a bunch of really nice stuff for really inexpensive prices. The main thing I wanted was the 14 foot trampoline. Add listed a regular price of $329 and on sale for $229. $100 off, but for Saturday only it is listed as $189. It has enclosures to keep my kids safe, water weight bags pads around it. Everything I want with a 250 pound maximum that's enough for two or three of my kids to play at the same time. There is also a nice three day sale going on and an official football that is $35 on Amazon is on sale for $20. And counts towards a $10 off for $50 coupon so if I pick up more stuff, but football will only be $14 for me. I really like their sales as my children are all very active in sports (in case you didn't know). Football, wrestling, Judo, baseball, rollerskating, cross country, track and field... They are even talking about doing a triathlon this summer. So having big 5 sending me weekly coupons, really helps a lot. Another example is I canopy. The list price is $130. It is on sale for $89, but for today only with this one day coupon, it's $49. Now I am aware that the list price can be a bit inflated. And the sale price of $89 is pretty decent, but $45 for a 10' x 10' canopy is just A good price. I always check and make sure the price is actually good. Looking up a 10 x 10 Yolie canopy on Amazon the cheapest one I could find was $149. So yeah... Really good price. I have gone through quite a few canopies at pyramid Lake as the wind is very hard on them, so it's not as devastating when your canopies only cost you $49 LOL. read more

We had an EXCEPTIONAL experience yesterday at the Big 5 on N. McCarran in Sparks! We had done research on inflatable kayaks and saw the Intex brand ranks consistently among the top rated. Additional research indicated that Big 5 carries a variety of Intex kayaks. The moment we walked in the door we were welcomed warmly by Kevin, Sales Associate. He showed us where the Intex kayaks were, and we bought the one that we wanted and an electric pump. Because we had signed up online to Big 5's app we got 10% off both items. Kevin thanked us sincerely for coming in and accurately answered a couple of our questions. From beginning to end we had an AMAZING shopping experience. This was our first visit to this Big 5. We Will most definitely come back and look first to Big 5 for any planned sporting goods purchases. Great work, Kevin. You are an outstanding ambassador for Big 5! read more

PFD FTW! (Personal Floatation Device for the win!) Stopped in to Big 5 to buy life jackets in anticipation of a day of boating fun. They had an extensive, albeit somewhat crowded, section for water-related accoutrements. Water shoes, PFDs in all price ranges, swimwear, etc. Prices were reasonable and it was convenient to stop in and grab just what we needed. Now for my PSA about PFDs: make sure you have them and respect the water. A member of our party did end up out of the boat and in the water, but the life jacket helped avoid tragedy! read more

Up early to hit this Big Five for Black Friday sales. Well stocked and clean store. Best part was customer service from Daryl. Personable, knowledgeable and professional. Asked him where to find something I saw in their sales ad and he didn't just describe the area it was located, he walked me to it. The quality of the items I have purchased from this store has been very good. The service has also been good. When I have needed assistance, I have found that the employees are knowledgeable and able to assist. When I am in this store I feel that there is far too much merchandise out on the sales floor, which makes it feel cluttered (my opinion). It is sometimes difficult to locate the items I am looking for as a result. Not my first stop when looking for sporting goods, but I have been able to find the items I need at this location, that I was not able to locate at other sporting good stores. read more

I forgot about this gem of a store for a while. Came in last week looking for a cheap foam roller since I heard it helps with muscle soreness. Found a simple one for $18 and was happy to purchase it. I went in earlier today to buy some gloves for weight lifting and found very nice Nike brand ones for only $15. Also saw some tents on my way out that I was interested in. I used to buy my shoes at another place I won't name, but it's a store famously known for its footwear. Until that store made me mad a couple of years ago, that is. I went over to Big 5, and started buying my shoes there. Great selection, great prices, fast helpful service. I hate shoe shopping, so it's a bonus when I can be in and out of there in ten minutes. They even offered to throw my smelly old shoes away--I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but they were happy to do so. I just passed my second anniversary of happiness with this store. We had to get a fishing license and they just closed. We knocked on the door and yelled that we needed a fishing license. They opened the door and sold us a fishing lisence. What a life saver. Will not return after our experience today. Went in looking for a basket ball and thought let's shop local, so we went up at big 5. Get to the register with the basketball and the price is double what the sale sign said. They have us go back to make sure we grabbed the right one, we did so we took a picture of the sign and bring it back up. The manager looks through their ad, looks at the model number and even goes back to check the sign her self. As if we had taken the picture some other time, really? She gives us a bunch of excuses, the signs went up early, the ball is tagged wrong...blah blah. Really lady this is silly. She finally changed the price considering none of those issues are the customers fault. Bad customer service! read more
