I walked into REI expecting to shop, not to be lectured. The first thing I saw was a large sign trying to dictate values and push an agenda. Whether someone agrees or disagrees with the message, it's not REI's job to tell customers how they should think or act. I came here for outdoor gear, not political messaging. Companies should focus on their strengths--serving customers and selling quality products--instead of jumping into virtue signaling and social posturing. We recently moved to the Treasure Valley. This is our first time to this location. I'm a co-op member and I really like REI. The staff and merchandise is always top notch. Unfortunately, our overall experience this time was disappointing. While the staff was great, they did not have the sale price Merrill boots my wife liked in her size. This caused us to have to purchase them online. That in and of itself was not a problem. However, the next day REI sent me an email stating that they were canceling our order due to an "inventory issue", which essentially meant that they ran out of stock. These were great boots at a great price. To "compensate" us for the "inconvenience", they offered a 15% off coupon on a "full price" item. We wanted to take advantage of their sale; the coupon does us no good. I called to talk to a customer service agent. Anthony had a very cheery voice, however, he did not acknowledge my dissatisfaction, instead just matter-of-factly confirmed that REI ran out of stock. All in all, REI missed the mark with me this time. read more

Well that was pleasant! Needed to pick up a ship to store package from REI today. The parking lot was absolutely packed I thought to myself sarcastically, well this will be a treat! Turns out it was:) They had a head counter at the door, along with masks in case you forgot yours and hand sanitizer. There was a sign with a large enough diagram to explain to people the correct way to wear a mask. Very refreshing. While inside I didn't see one person that had forgot their nose has holes in it too. Refreshing! So like I said very pleasant! A store with a lot of the outdoor goodies we all love that encouraged everyone to respect everyone By helping keep everyone safe! read more

Tomash from the camping section went above and beyond! I came in because the gasket for my camp stove was acting up and I wasn't sure what was wrong with it. Tomash came out to my car and tested it out for me, literally on his hands and knees in the parking lot. After testing it, he wasn't quite sure what the issue was, so I decided to get a small backpacking stove just to be safe, and he helped me pick it out. My hero! Could not be more impressed with Ben in the ski department. There were two Bens in that department today, and we were working with the younger one. My wife has been trying to figure out her boot situation for awhile and he was so patient, competent, helpful, and non pushy as they come. We probably spent 45 minutes to an hour with him and he was talking through options, trying to see if we could make her current boots work, while looking at new ones etc. We ended up with new boots, while having her old pair fitting better than when we arrived and will use them as a backup. Too much to write it all but long story short. This dude knows his stuff, cares about the customer, and is truly a great representative for REI. Will be back no doubt! read more

Came here for a pair of hiking shoes for an upcoming trip to Yosemite (and for training in the meantime). The two guys that helped me in the shoe department were absolutely awesome! I explained what I was doing (training to hike half dome) and they were able to guide me to several shoe options to try on. Plus, they carry half sizes through women's size 11! Not something I can find everywhere. And, they have a railed rock where you can try the shoes two steps up and down steep terrain. I tried on at least a half a dozen pairs of shoes and they never seemed the slightest bit impatient with me. In fact, they were the complete opposite--happily helpful the entire time. I don't shop at REI frequently, but having a look around--I think that will change. They have a pretty sweet women's clothing section with great workout and outdoor adventuring clothes. Oh! And, I scored a pretty sweet sun hat for all the training hikes (as well as the big day on half dome). Awesome! Get to it! read more

Best hiking shop ever! I'm new to the area and was in dire need of new hiking boots as that's what you do in Idaho... anywho I ended up at REI and was extremely satisfied with both the service and product. Ms. Sharon helped me out and had me try on several pairs, measured my feet, and guided me through what to look for in a bomb pair of hiking boots. Oh and sweet smile as well! I ended up hiking 6 miles in my brand new boots and my feet were sad when it was time to take them off because the comfort level was FIRE! Been to this location a few times, and every time we visit staff are friendly and helpful. The most recent visit we bought shoes, and all the staff made sure we were helped with our selections. Wow, oh, wow! I love this store. They literally have anything and everything you could think of for your outdoor adventures. Came here for a compact pillow that I could fit into a suitcase, a mosquito net, and headlamp. I am proud to say that I left with those items only - although I will say that while here I pondered purchasing a pair of Chocos, a new backpack, fancy herbal mosquito repellent bracelets, and a new set of camping towels. However, I exercised self control and only bought what I needed. Totally patting myself on the back right now as I type this. (Point: shoppers beware, all of the items in this store are enticing. It would be very easy to leave with a kayak when you came here for a snowboard. Totally exaggerating - but you get the idea. However - I'm sure that kayak/snowboard scenario has happened at some point in time.) Anyways... This place is a Co-op and offers a buy-in incentive for members. (I have yet to sign up for it, although I imagine I'll cave and do it sooner than later.) This costs only $20 and gives you perks like access to member specific deals, access to their garage sale (killer deals), and an annual 10% off dividend. Closing thoughts: A store like this just makes sense in a place like Boise. With the outdoors and all sorts of adventures in our backyard, it's really convenient to have a place like this around. Their employees are friendly, knowledgable and always willing to help steer you in the right direction. I went to go get hiking boots, a sleeping bag, and a backpack. I waited at each of the designated "line starts here" signs by myself. The boots section is annoying (roped off, can't touch the boots), but at least I accomplished the task at hand. The only attention I got from staff at the other two stations was a dirty look and a "come back in 10 minutes". I left after an 1:15 with only my boots. read more

I have tried this store twice and each time the staff is rude and seems inconvenienced by having to help. Also, it makes zero sense to have to waite to try on shoes but I can go touch everything else in the store?! And God forbid your mask falls even slightly below your nose bc the staff will be sure to correct you or ask you to leave. Besides, anything REI sells at their ridiculously over-marked prices I can get online for way cheaper and I don't have to deal with rude staff. I agree with wearing masks and limiting the number of people in the store - no problem. However we had a sales woman come over to us as my kids were trying on sandals and tell us that socks were required when trying on shoes and she needs to know which ones we touched so she could "quarantine them". I'm serious. In the adult section there were two women who were trying on sandals with no socks and had an employee helping them with sizes. If you are going to make up random Covid rules, like the virus spreads from your feet but we can touch all the clothes in the store with our hands - at least be consistent. read more

REI is a great company and the Boise store has a knowledgeable crew always willing to answer questions and give friendly advice. I purchased a hybrid bike a couple of years ago from them and were happy with their assistance in finding the right size and making adjustments for the proper fit. I've also taken it in for routine maintenance and have been happy with their service. It doesn't appear that Larry Craig comes in anymore. At least I haven't seen him wandering the aisles. read more

In my search for the perfect rolling backpack for an international trip I ordered two backpacks online and had them delivered to the store. At the encouragement of my husband I also paid for a membership. The backpacks were estimated to arrive a couple weeks after I placed the order. About a week into the wait I thought, "Hm. That's weird. I never received a welcome email for my membership or any notification that my order was received." I called the corporate number and they told me that I had entered my email incorrectly when I signed up. Okay, cool. I take responsibility for that. When they changed my email to the correct one I still did not receive a welcome email or any notifications in my regular inbox or junk folder about my order. The day the store was supposed to receive the backpacks came and went. No phone call. No email notification. I called the store. After lots of confusion on the sales associate's part (including comments like, "I'm not sure why it says they haven't shipped" and "Oh, it says this order was partially filled"), they located the bags and told me I could pick them up. Oh, great, I thought. I will stop by next week when the craziness of school and work has settled down. A little more than a week later I stop by the store and again there is massive confusion about where my backpacks are. The sales associate who finally looked up the order said, "Your order has been canceled." Turns out, the one email I got from PayPal (not REI) said that I didn't actually pay for them and that REI would collect payment when I came in to pick them up. Again, my fault for assuming that I had paid in full for the backpacks and they were just waiting for me to go get them. Another sales associate (who at various times is also casually eating an energy bar or something while trying to help the first one) comes up to see if they are somewhere on the floor and finds just one of the backpacks I originally ordered plus the same bag in a different color. Resignedly I say that I will take the other color and when the sales associate rings it up, it is almost 190.00 MORE than the first bag, which is on clearance. From beginning to end the whole ordeal has been a disaster of miscommunication and on top of it they are asking me to pay 190.00 more than what I had intended to pay for a situation that is not my fault. I ask if they can honor the price of my original order and the associate radios Brad the "manager" (and I use this word loosely) to explain the situation and ask for the price adjustment. Brad simply says, "Nope." Or maybe he didn't say that. Maybe he said, "F off" or "Oh, hell naw" or "Pssshaaah!" I can only guess because Brad, in his role as "manager," never came to me to apologize for the mix up or try to make it right. In fact, as I was surrounded by three sales associates (the one who helped me, the masticating one who found the backpacks, and another who had to figure out how to refund the cost of my membership), Brad walked by, saw that I was unhappy by the look on my face (which, by the way, I am proud to say I did NOT take out on anyone in the store - although I totally understand why there is yelling, fit-throwing and general rage from other people in situations like this), LOOKED ME UP AND DOWN, gave me the side eye, then passed the whole situation by. This made me instantly realize that I was not being treated as your typical REI shopper. Maybe I should have thrown a fit. Maybe I needed to look like I just rappelled off a mountain to get stellar service. Maybe I should have insisted. But it's not my job as a consumer who was failed by a company to make it right. The sales associates were nice enough but Brad didn't stick around long enough to have that conversation. As I was waiting for the associates to figure out how to refund my membership payment, I told them, "This whole thing could have been avoided if I received a phone call or an email from the store to let me know 1. That my backpacks had come in, 2. That my order had been canceled and/or 3. That my backpacks were being put back on the shelf." The only response I received was, "Yyyeeeeeaaaaahhhh..... Sometimes we call people and sometimes we don't, so..... Sorry." At no point while I was in the store did anyone try to convince me to keep my membership or offer a solution about how to make it right. I called the Corporate office to complain about Brad and the entire debacle and even they could not honor the price I originally paid for the backpack that went missing. At best, they said they would communicate with Boise about my treatment in the store and offer a 30% discount on any full price backpack I did buy - which doesn't even begin to the touch the cost I would have originally paid for the backpacks I found online. This is the worst retail experience I have ever had. And I have been to Walmart in Florida! I will never shop at REI again and I will actively encourage my friends and family to never shop there. read more

Must admit, coming from Seattle, we're spoiled with the Flagship REI. The Boise one isn't even the size of a Walmart and we managed to get parking IN THE SHADE on a 90-degree day, right across from the entrance on a Monday afternoon. Frankly, I was skeptical I'd find anything at all. However, things changed when I met Matt in the shoe department. Last year I bought a pair of Scarpa hiking boots, and it took me more than 6 months, two sets of shoe inserts, countless sock combination experiments to figure out that the intense feet pain I experienced after every hike wasn't due to my Edward Scissorhands-like feet but the fact that my Scarpas were too narrow for me. I'd done my research and found that Keen Targhees and Lowa Renegades were good for wide feet, and armed with this knowledge felt ready to do battle with REI's shoe department personnel. Matt was right on his game, however, measuring my feet and determining that I'm a size 8 (not the 6.5 I usually am in regular shoes and in the Scarpas). He also seconded the Keen choice, as it's a brand that runs wider. Then, he proceeded to teach me how to *properly tie* my hiking boots in two different ways, so that I don't have to chaff my fingers pulling hard on the shoestrings every time I lace them up. So, like a little puppy that'd been kicked once too many times to the curb, I slowly started to trust REI and its staff again. The extra star is given for REI's over-the-top service. I'd brought the hated Scarpas in for an exchange, thinking maybe REI would give me $50 off on this new purchase, or a voucher - but they actually gave me a full refund, no questions asked (the original inserts weren't even in the shoes anymore. I probably had them made into dolls and burned them in effigy for the great pain the boots caused my feet). So, after walking into the store, expecting to butt heads with Customer Service and just wanting to try on hiking boots, so that I could buy them cheaper on Amazon, I ended up getting the boots (not on sale), a dorky hiking hat (not on sale), and a new backpack (on sale) at REI. REI Boise's service more than makes up for the limited selection, and the company's philosophy of giving back to the customers in dividends is what keeps customers going back. read more

Unbelievably RUDE, unprofessional staff!! I went in there with my family to buy full ski set-ups for three people. I was there to spend some serious money. My grown sons were called a derogatory name by an employee for no reason at all within 60 seconds of entering the store. We hadn't even done anything! Even avid mask-wearers would be shocked at how abusive these workers are toward their customers regarding mask wearing. REI has lost costumers FOR LIFE! We immediately left and are happy to spend our money somewhere else. We'll never be back. They carry high end, great quality stuff that's why it's a bit pricey! My soulmate and I are planning to begin our first thru hike in New Zealand this November. We have been doing a lot of research and wanted some help choosing footwear for me and packs for the both of us. We began in the shoe department and were assisted by a friendly employee named Eric. Eric cleared up a lot of my questions and made me feel more confident in what style and size of shoe I should go with. I thought about it over the weekend, and it is because of his advice that I have made my decision and will be purchasing from REI. After we finished in shoe department, we went to try on a couple of packs. We were both thinking about going with an ultra lightweight pack to try and save on weight for our 1,800-mile journey. When we arrived at the backpack department, we were kindly greeted by another phenomenal employee, Jake. Jake was so knowledgeable about packs from his own, personal experiences and relieved us of a lot of the anxiety we had about which packs were right for us. Jake sized me for my pack and made specific recommendations for my body type. He also reminded us of the importance of comfort and talked us into considering a heavier pack. Jake not only made us feel better about what direction to go with our packs, he also brightened our day and reminded us of the how beautiful human connection can be. We definitely were not expecting to meet such wonderful people when we entered REI this weekend, but we will be shopping here as we gear up for our future adventures to support this sort of customer sevice. Edit: They called me and resolved the issue to my satisfaction. Although I had to pry a resolution out of them, I'm pleased with the outcome and will continue to shop there. I can't say I'll be shopping at rei anytime soon again. I had to order a new garmin after the one the sold me was defective. The first ordered replacement sent in an HR+ BOX, but the actual watch was the inferior HR. Not cool. Ordered again. Sent me a USED watch. This is it. Literally covered in white shit. I yet again had to return it. That's not only two weeks (and three trips) of my time wasted, but also just plain bullshit. The refund was nice, but they can't compensate me for my time, energy, and emotions. I'm sure anyone with a fitness watch can agree, it's hard to go without. Ridiculous. read more

I've always enjoyed REI, even though I find them a bit over priced. I've been in this Boise location quite a few times and I get really annoyed. I get the vibe that because I'm young and probably look like I have no money, no one wants to help me. In the Spokane store (where I live), the employees are much more helpful. Sometimes I feel the need to beat them off with a stick. Not in Boise though, I practically had to beg to be helped. I hate that. Other than that, its a nice store. read more

Days later the outlet price was reduced, but you wouldn't give me a credit for the difference...stating we can give credits for outlet items.
