My husband insisted we come here, and it's not like we're in Maine everyday, so if it means waiting in line for two hours, then that's what it means. I'm currently not eating gluten or dairy, so the lobster roll drenched in butter has no appeal to me. TO MY SURPRISE, they have locally sourced gluten-free bread (3 types!), AND they put the butter on the side, so the customer gets to control that factor. I have been searching for the best lobster roll and I think I found that at Red's Eats! The lobster roll was nothing like I have ever tasted before. The picture above doesn't do the roll justice. They even call their lobster roll the "Roll of Fame." There was over 1 1/2 or 2 pounds of lobster meat on the roll, it was over flowing the roll. The lobster was fresh and it was served on a buttery grilled roll. The thing I liked most about the roll was that there was no butter, mayo or lettuce on the roll, it was just the lobster meat. The buttery roll added a great butter flavor to the lobster when you bit into it. On the side of the roll they give you the butter and mayo, just in case you want to dip your lobster in either. You have to eat this lobster roll with a fork at first, with the meat overflowing the roll it is hard to take a bite. I did dip some of the lobster meat into the butter but you don't have to if you don't want to because the lobster meat is so fresh. My husband and I watched an episode from Andrew Zimmern's List on travel channel and it featured this place. We were both excited because we loved lobster rolls but always wanted to try it out in Maine. Since this place was in Maine, we thought "perfect". They don't open until 11:30. Today they opened a bit later than that. Right when we arrived there was a line. Probably 7-8 people on front of us. I guess we were smart to come right when they opened. If we waited longer we probably would have regretted it. Another yelp review said it best, this place is a bit overhyped. There really isn't much to it. YES they give you tons of fresh lobsters on the lobster rolls but really......I was disappointed. There was nothing else on the roll besides lobster meat. No condiments, no lettuce, no pickles on the side. (Yes i know, i come from boston and that's how I gotten used to eating lobster rolls). For $27 i expect the roll to be a bit more........hmm.......appealing. We ordered crab cakes and there was only 2 peices. Fries were good but you could tell it was the frozen kind. I do give credit to the kindness and attentiveness of the staff there. They saw I had a dog and brought out a nice bowl of water for him. I thought that was the sweetest thing. Hence, the 3 stars. But after a disappointing visit, my review prob would have been a 2 stars. Take note: if you generally eat simple you'll love it. My husband was insistent we come here due to reading about this place and raving about the ratings so we headed towards Portland rather than straight for Bar Harbor. Coming up the road, we see a short line at this shack. It's exactly right before a bridge so we had to make sure made a turn in town before crossing the bridge. We had about a 15 minute wait on a Monday afternoon about 6pm...this was early August so still peak season for the summer. Not as long as we were imagining. We ordered a small order of fried scallops, fried Maine clams, and 2 lobster rolls and the $1 hot dog for our dog. The lobster rolls were completely over-stuffed with lobster and we got sides of mayo and butter. They were so big we both wished we had just split one. As the other items were filling too. The lobster rolls were very very meaty but the meat lacked a strong lobstery flavor. I saw them haul huge plastic vats of lobster meat so I wonder of the freshness. In hindsight, this was the least favorite of all the lobster rolls we had on this trip even though it had the most. The fried scallops were watery and very flavorless just like the ones you cook from the grocery store... and if you've ever had a fresh scallop, you'd know these were probably previously frozen. Very disappointing as these were pretty pricey and scallops, if fresh, are something I would eat over fresh lobster. The fried clams were nice and sweet and I thoroughly enjoyed these...ate them all. One complaint is all their fried food batter was on the thicker side and greasy. Same with the scallops. Would I stop if I came back? I find myself evaluating this place on what is instead of what could be. The lobster roll at Red's is a simple, loaded with lobster, no frills roll. They provide butter on the side for those who would like to add butter. If you are looking for a unique spin on a lobster roll, then go to Bite Into ME or Eventide; however, if you are looking for a roll loaded with lobster, give this place a shot. But be prepared to pay for that roll as the prices are in the $26+ range. If looking for something on the side, the Fried Mushrooms are the secret winner on the menu. The Fish & Chips and Haddock Sandwich are also both good items. Diclaimer: we have been here a couple times; however, have only done so at the beginning or end of the season. The rating is based on waiting 15 minutes to order instead of the 2+ hours seen in the summer. We are sure you have heard much great word of mouth info about Red's. i am not a lobster roll aficionado, and cannot give an informed opinion as far as comparison to other lobster rolls, so I will just give you the hard data. Arrival time : 11:55 AM on a Monday in late May, so not peak tourist season. By the time we were done eating, the line had probably doubled (by about 12:30 -12:45) Wait time: Approximately 45 minutes total from getting into line to receiving our food. Price: $30 for one lobster roll. Went over to Sprague's, the seafood shack across the street, and saw they were selling a lobster roll for $26 - but I cannot comment about the relative amount of lobster in their roll. I will say that Reds gives a very generous amount of lobster - definitely too much to be confined within the roll as a sandwich, at the beginning. Can't give an accurate weight of lobster on the roll, but based on the volume and assuming it's about the density of water, it seems like it would have had to have been at least 6 oz. read more

Well there's not enough I could say about this place! The only thing is the wait, which is long because it's so amazing, but it is so worth it. I was there on a rainy Friday in during July in Covid and the line wrapped around the building - it took about an hour from start to finish. But if you know that and are prepared for that and realize what a treat you're going to get at the end, it's all worth it. The staff were amazingly kind; for example, they came out with umbrellas you could borrow if you wanted one, and they came out with a sample of the most amazing fried shrimp I've ever had in my life. As the sun bore down on us on an 80+ degree summer day we were given an umbrella to provide some shade and our dog was offered a cold bowl of water while we stood in line. We waited more than 1.5 hours just to order even though the food came in 5 minutes. While the food was good no lunch is worth a 2 hour wait. Especially standing by the side of a noisy road with hardly another social distancing. People started to get gabby near my face. The maddening thing is that the line would be shorter if the place had a better system! One staff did the order taking AND the order assembling while others seemed to stand around checking the status of the five tables. They were totally nice and friendly so the frustration is not against them. But the establishment could easily make the process a lot faster and more efficient for the customers. It led us to think maybe they did this on purpose to create a line like some marketing gimmick. Without the epic line, they might be just another lobster shack. My family and I vacation in Maine every-other-year, and once we get started, one of the first stops before we even get to our destination is Red's Eats. We really like it and started to come after seeing a piece on Red's Eats on the Food Network. Most times when you do get here, there is a line which can be a wait of over an hour to as little as five minutes. It really is a lobster roll of the dice. In the summer heat, they will come offer umbrellas and ice water to cool you down and the sun off your body. But, there are not a lot of umbrellas so you have to be quick or patient to get one. The menu has the lobster rolls, of course, and some non-seafood items. My favorite are the whole-belly fried clams which come by the 1/2 or whole pint. I can honestly say that I've not had any better fried clams anywhere. My family has also had the fish and chips and hot dogs. Everything is always good. Prices can fluctuate with the clams and lobster, but it is reasonable and can climb high if you have a larger order or want some to go! It is also cash only but they have a MAC machine onsite if necessary. On the side of the building, they offer ice cream and shakes. The seating is first come, first served, and there is no restroom except for a port-o-potty at the grass section of tables. We came here on a whim, and decided to visit Acadia on labor day weekend. We looked up what are the must eat places in Maine, and this placed popped up. I knew how long the line was going to be, and despite reading the reviews about people waiting up to two hours I still wanted to eat here. We did wait a long time, but we had water and umbrellas to block us from the heat. It was well worth the wait! I've had cold lobster roll before, but never fresh and warm =D. We got there 15 minutes before it opened and were 30-40 people from the front. It took 1.5 hours to get our food. I don't know if it was a staffing issue but that's what it was. On our way between Portland and Bar Harbor we had to stop at this famous lobster shack! We endured a two hour wait on a warm Monday afternoon toward the end of August. Here's the full scoop - The wait is LONG, but we're from Virginia so we had to try it while we were in Maine. Due to Covid, they line is socially distanced, masks are required, and there is no seating available at Red's. There are a handful of picnic tables overlooking the water near the restaurant where plenty of people were enjoying their lobster rolls. In addition, during the long wait, Red's employees went down the line offering water and a small sample (fried shrimp). They also have water bowls for dogs. In addition, they are a CASH ONLY shop. They have an ATM machine out front, but just an FYI. Now for the FOOD. The lobster rolls cost $23.95 a piece and contain an INSANE amount of lobster. They "pile high" and they don't lie. I had to eat the top layer of lobster with a fork before even seeing the bread. I felt like it was about a pound of lobster and my husband said he believes it was two lobsters. Either way, it was a lot, and I couldn't finish mine and my husband who usually sweeps up after me couldn't do it either. That's saying something! The lobster roll was delicious and you most definitely get your money's worth, but I'm not sure if they are worth a two hour wait. Flavor wise, it didn't taste drastically different from other lobster rolls I've had. 1 lb of lobster on a toasted roll...I don't need to say much else about the food. There is a wait, but what you wait for is the food to be made to order, which means it doesn't get much fresher. There was still plenty of brine taste in my lobster, something that a lot of other places lack. Then there's the customer service. My card was having issues in the atm (it's cash or check only) and I went back over to cancel my order. The owner wouldn't allow that to happen and gave me a name and address to send a check to. I ended up getting my worn out card to work, but if that doesn't scream customer service, and family establishment that is passionate about the food and people they serve I don't know what does.
