It was a perfect day and I had the perfect lobster roll. A ton of lobster, four claws were found and quickly devoured. Melted butter was poured over the top and went everywhere, sopped up and consumed with great delight. The atmosphere was cheery and lovely, with quite a few people enjoying their own rolls. We stopped by on Thursday, 6/18/26, at 4:15 pm. There was no line to order and we only waited a few minutes for our food (a full hour and fifteen minutes less than we waited at the place across the street). A lot of reviews are from people who came here because they didn't want to wait in the long line for the place across the street and they said the lobster roll here was good. We wanted our review to be fully informed, so we got a lobster roll here and we also got one from the place across the street. While the line across the street is absurdly and unnecessarily long, we've determined now that that place is famous for a reason. Prices are the same, high $30s. The actual lobster was fine at Sprague's, comparable to the place across the street. The butter though was not even a competition. I don't know how they do it, but the butter from the place across the street was just so much better. Sprague's butter just did nothing for the lobster roll. It was clear and just looked like clarified butter. Do with this information what you will. read more

I'm surprised at a 4.1 overall, to be honest. A lot of people find Sprague's as an alternative to waiting in line at Red's. I choose it. I grew up in Wiscasset. Red's is good enough but more for the tourists imo. They have "the story" "the hype". It too is a good lobster roll but It was far too expensive for me when I lived there and - while I've been a few times, as an adult, I actually prefer Sprague's. No 45-60 minute wait. The lobster roll is good and a lot less money. Fair price. Good amount of meat. Love the steamers and chowder. Staff is friendly. There is limited parking but plenty of places to sit. Food is cooked quickly and served hot. Plus - there's ice cream on the dock too. read more

I was in Maine for a half marathon in Portland and decided to do some sightseeing and on my way to the lighthouse, I saw Sprague's. I was like, I'll be back. Saw my lighthouse and to my delight, Sprague's was still open! What I love about this place is the outdoor seating. I was there the first week of October and it was still quiet warm. Sprague's is right on the water so the sunset views was breathless. They are CASH ONLY...but they do have a very expensive ATM onsite. It was almost closing time so I ordered a whole lobster an fries. There is a $2 rental for the lobster cracker thingy but really I didn't need it! The lobster was really good and meaty. The fries were home cut and plentiful! I can't tell you enough about how nice the family/staff is. I think dad is still working at the lobster steaming station. They really left an impression on me on how NICE people from Maine are. Definitely a different vibe from New Hampshire. If I'm ever back in Maine, I'll definitely stop at Sprague's Lobster again and try their other dishes. read more

I make a yearly pilgrimage to Wiscasset/Edgecomb for my personal Lobsterfest, and Sprague's is my home base. Frank, Linda, Alicia and the rest of their wonderful family (and friends) serve excellent lobster and crab rolls, with the same lobster as that place across the street, but the difference-maker the rolls that are butter-crisped on both sides, giving them some delightful added crunch. I get them with mayo and butter on the side and add as I like. (I read the review that said that they "only serve clarified butter"...really?) I usually get the lobster dinner, once or twice per day. A lb of steamers or mussels, a whole lobster, Cole slaw, corn and dinner roll. Absolutely delicious food at its peak of freshness, served dockside beside the Sheepscot River where you enjoy spectacular scenery in the company of other really nice people with a similar taste in great food. And they serve the delicious locally-made Gifford's ice cream for after your dinner. I've never been disappointed, and I've already made my reservations for the same condo next year when I will enjoy Sprague's once again. read more

AMAZING lobster roll!! On our drive up to Bar Harbor, we drove through Wissacet and saw this spot right off the main road. We pulled in and saw the massive line across the street - for what exactly idk because this was a delicious lobster roll - we got it with hot butter on the side. Roll With the Punches For our antepenultimate lobstah roll here in Maine, we decided where else to try but the famous Red's Eats! Yes, Red's Eats which has been featured in just about every food magazine and in any food show where the subject of sandwiches and/or lobster rolls are mentioned. So, we got in line and waited and waited and within ten minutes the massive line hadn't budged an inch. So we quickly scoped out "this other place" across the street, and noticed the solid Yelp reviews. Well, we were sold and off to Sprague's we went. The Good: *Entire place is all outdoor dog-friendly seating w/ umbrellas. *Unlike Red's, Sprague's has actual riverside views. *The service at the counter was friendly and a little sassy, but a good sassy. *Unlike Red's, there was practically no line here at Sprague's and, what little there was, moved very efficiently. *Cheese fries use a queso instead of melted shredded cheddar--and they were fantastic. *Lobstah Roll was fantastic and was made even more fantastic with their great ambiance on the river's edge. The Meh: *Just like Red's, they too are cash only. *Street Parking only, but we didn't have an issue finding a spot. *Seasonal (Spring - Early Fallish) The Ugly: *Of course since they're cash only, some clever young entrepreneur put an atm machine nearby which was convenient--except the bloody thing didn't work!! Aarrggh!! Now I had to cross the highway not once, but twice. This ain't no easy highway to cross either. Believe you me... 0_o *I don't know what the deal with their chowder was that day, but it was straight up watery like soup and not a nice, thick chowdah. I can't believe this was their variation of a chowder. Something must've definitely gone wrong and we'll Chalk it up to a snafu. We drove through on a Monday and while Red's was on my list, this place didn't disappoint. They are smart for being open on Mondays when Red's isn't! I'm guessing they are very similar in taste. By the time we parked, ordered, ate, and left we saw the same person that was at the end of the line at Reds in the middle of the line so theres that aspect. I really enjoyed the little line to the fresh clams and lobster shack! I got a crab roll that was good and a pound of steamers- my husband and friend got the fish and chips and enjoyed it. As I am on team "make fun of Red's and never go there," I must instead be a Sprague's loyalist. Really good chowder-- my complaints about most chowders is that they often use either emulsifiers, are generally too thick and gooey, and/or that they use a sort of cloying chicken stock base, but Sprague's seemed to be the real deal-- it was more of a cream or milk base, but full of flavor and good bits. Burger was OK but nothing exciting. Got our food super fast and everyone was great (it was NOT very busy). Will definitely update if I return for other stuff! There is a lot to choose from when you pull up to Spargue's. The restaurant is in a separate area, with a dirt parking lot. There are several shacks with a few shops, the steaming shack, and shack where you order. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CASH!! They only accept cash, which seems a bit outdated and a potential loss of sales. I know I would have ordered a lot more if I didn't have to pay in cash. A bit lobstered out and not wanted to spend my only cash on one lobster roll, we switched it up and got the fish and chips, chowder, and crab roll. Everything was very fresh. The crab roll was sweet, fresh and was just as good as the lobster roll at half the price. We would have liked to have both a lobster roll and the crab roll, but once again not enough cash at the time. The area was beautiful and made our eating experience even more enjoyable. FANTASTIC! Why there are people standing in line across the street is bananas when this place is right here! Look at they gorgeous lunch! The bread on the lobstah roll was toasty and soft. The clam chowder was loaded with clams and potatoes. It had a very delightful brothiness to the chowder rather than the thick heaviness everyone makes it which was a wonderful surprise. This California girl also had moxie for the first time... it tastes as if root beer and Jager had a baby... I actually enjoyed it! I can't praise this place enough. OK let me start by saying I did not have a lobster roll. The line across the street at Red 's was incredibly long. So we came here to see what the options were. There was maybe three people in line. I thought about getting lobster roll, but decided a couple burgers would hit the spot. People around were commenting. that their lobster rolls were very good. But on to the burgers. I got a cheeseburger and a hamburger special. They were very reasonably priced. I asked them to cook the burgers medium rare which they did. The staff was super friendly. The food was ready quickly. I believe they grind their own burgers fresh daily. At least that's what a sign said. The buns were soft and fresh. So for under $20, I got a hamburger and a cheeseburger special and a drink. My belly was full and I was happy. The view off the deck is also very nice and they had plenty of seating on very sturdy wood picnic tables.. Yes, I can highly recommend this place! read more

The 4.0 stars must be for the lobster roll, certainly not the fish and chips. I didn't think to ask what kind of fish it was, assuming it would be haddock since everywhere else up here is, but the fish stick style cut pieces (except for one small thin filet) were just ok at best. Very bland and too much breading to fish ratio. It was the first hot day since we've been here and just didn't feel like standing in the sun for almost 2 hours at Red's. CASH ONLY. There is an ATM on site but make sure to get your money before getting in line or you will lose your place. Lobster rolls are usually $35 each and whole lobster dinners are about the same. Be sure to get enough cash. Nice location on a pier with a water view. Picnic tables aren't particularly comfy but work. Parking can be problematic and once you've pulled in there's no left turn, which may require going back across the bridge and making a U-Turn. And traffic can be quite heavy in season. They have chowder, lobster dinners, lobster rolls -- the usual lobster dock fare. I wish the clam chowder would have been a bit thicker but the taste made up for it in spades. Probably the best I've had. The cole slaw side was sweet and delicious. We got two lobster rolls, which were piled high with fresh, sweet meat and just as good as Red's across the street but without waiting in line for two hours. Just wish they'd be a bit more generous with the drawn butter. The ordering system is unique. They give you a number and you wait to be called.
