Was it worth the wait? Probably not. But was it delicious? Yes. Arrived at 10:45am on a Friday, they open at 11:30. The line was already 3/4 of the way down the block. Finally got to the front of the line to order at 12:15 and was served my food 10 minutes later. $38 for a sandwich is steep and it's cash only so you have to carry a lot of cash if you are feeding a family/group. They were already out of the local honey soda since I guess they're getting ready to close for the season (it's mid September). The lady who took our order when we finally got to the counter was nice. After we ordered we sat down at a table to wait, it was a nice day out and you could kinds of see the water. We didn't have a problem finding a table, so there is probably the perfect amount of tables correlated to the somewhat slow single cashier ordering system. The lobster roll was piled high and delicious. The lobster is cold but tasted very fresh. Got it with some warm butter and some lemons. I prefer a warm lobster roll, but this lobster roll was just outstanding. Huge and fresh and tons of meat, including plenty of tail meat where most other places only give you mostly claw meat. It was loaded so high, I had to take like a third of the meat off just so I could fit the sandwich in my mouth, and then I ate the lobster on its own with a fork. Easily the best lobster roll I've ever had. But again, not sure if it was worth the 1.5+ hour wait. I stopped here on our way from Portland to Bar Harbor for a few days, and I actually had the opportunity to stop here again on the way back but opted not to because 90+ minutes is a long time to wait for a sandwich. A bit conflicted on what to rate this place. After a 1.5 hour wait, from getting in line to getting our food, I was ready to rip it to shreds. However, I have to say the lobster roll was really truly good. And after having a lobster roll across the street (we got one roll from each place so we could be fully informed), I have to say Red's was just better. It's all in the butter. The butter at Red's was poured from a kettle that had been warming on the stove. It was delicious. The roll was around $37 and very generously overflowing with lobster. We also got sweet potato fries ($6.95) and the blueberry cake (can't remember how much it was). The sweet potato fries were nothing special, but the icing/dip/whatever it was that they came with was amazing. The blueberry cake was dry and actually not good, maybe a step below average at best. There really is no reason for the line to take as long as it does. Maybe it's a sign that their menu is too big. They need to stick to the basics and nothing else. We went on a rainy and cold Thursday, 6/18/26. Upon getting in line, I thought it wasn't too long...it still took 1.5 hours to get through! Absurd. The wait should not be part of the attraction. It shouldn't be something they're proud of. Tighten up the menu, move in an assembly line, and prepare orders with a little more of a sense of urgency. If they can get it together, I would happily rate them 5 stars. TL/DR: Stick with what they're known for. Get the lobster roll. And that's it. Not worth the wait really. I'll lead with that. Dead ass serious about that!! If you read no more, listen! We waited 1 hour 50 mins in line. If it had been mind blowing that would have been cool. It wasn't great even, it was just ok. It is cool to say I've been here I suppose, but I have no intention of coming back. It's a roadside shack with a bunch of folklore tied to it. We saw it driving in, saw the crowds standing in line, and wondered WTF was going on. Later that day we met a man that said "we had to eat at Red's while we were here". He touted it as life changing. People really do love it though. The guy in front of me drove an hour to get there, to wait two hours in line, to drive back another hour home. That's insane. My three stars is a personal stand and a reminder to myself and is not necessarily the experience you may have. You may just love it and tell other unsuspecting victims. It's not a negative thing on them totally, it's just that I don't like people enough to stand around with strangers for hours, all who are slightly bitchy because the wait is so damn long. Once you order, off to the deck & they bring your food out. Delivery was pretty quick & there was ample butter, as well as a bag for leftovers, & hand wipes. Everything was delish - and, given current market prices, not crazy expensive. OMG not 5*s I give them 20*'s This is the most incredible lobster shack anywhere in the United States. Yes the lines are long, sometimes 2-3 hours before it's your turn to order your meal. Today I ordered an appetizer lobster pop. It was ok nothing to write home about but I also ordered scallops , onion rings, lobster roll, excellent iced tea & excellent iced coffee. We picked an outside table & waited for our order to be delivered. It only took 10-15 minutes to have our order delivered. Red's doesn't weigh their lobster all they do is pile it on so high you can't see the buttered grilled hotdog roll. Served with a side of hot butter to dip or pour on the lobster. I couldn't finish my roll so I took home some leftover lobster that I weighed at home. It weighed 4.7 oz more than what a normal lobster roll weighs regularly. I can safely say there was around 16z of fresh tender lobster meat. No chewiness incurred. Look closely at the pictures & start making plans to visit Red's Eats in Wiscasset Maine. We chose to go visit when they 1st opened on May 6th so the line we stood in was only 10-12 people deep. We will go back in October before they close for the season. There are really only 3 negative things about this shop and those are the parking, the waiting/line, and it being cash only. OPENING DAY 2026 I was lucky enough to be in the area on opening day and knew it was finally time to try the famous Reds Eats as a native Mainer. Since it was opening day on a wednesday and i arrived around 1:45 i only waited in line about half an hour so i cant speak on wait times during peak season. I do know however that i would wait in a longer line to eat this food again because it was more than worth it. First of all the customer service is exceptional- i dont think i have had a better more friendly experience. They give you sampled while you wait in line and during my time they were handing out their beer batters fried shrimp and wow even that was amazing! I waited while it was cold and rainy as well so the hot shrimp was a wonderful surprise. I watched ever interaction the employees had with every individual party and the never wavered in politeness or excitement. They treated everyone with the same respect and really took their time catering to them. Now onto the food, i ordered the sweet potato fries with the house made maple aoili, a side of cole slaw, and of course the lobster roll which was a market price of $38 on opening day. The food came out so fast, the wait times are not because they don't get food out in a timely manner because they were an excellent well oiled machine in the kitchen. This lobster roll is absolutely STUFFED with lobster. I had at least two tails, two claws, and then some in my one hot dog roll and i couldn't even pick it up. Let's just say i fork and knifed it until i could take a bite of the roll which i am not complaining about at all! Comes with hot butter on the side which i liked more than just being dumped onto the roll beforehand. Pro tip- get the side of sweet potato fries because the house made maple aoili it comes with is also fantastic when you dip your lobster roll in it! Plus the fries were perfectly hot and crispy. Cole slaw was a great addition too for some crunch! I love being able to look out into the water as you sit outside, and i was even bundled up in a jacket but i wouldn't change my experience for anything! This is by far the best price point for any lobster roll you'll get in Maine when we are talking about quality and quantity. Traveling with friends and someone recommended stopping at Red's Eats for a late lunch on the way to Bar Harbor, ME. Fantastic decision! Be aware, even though we were there on a Thursday and well past the normal lunch hour, the parking was still tough to find and the line was very long. In the end, it took more than an hour to get to the window to order. Once we ordered we sat on one of their deck areas and the food was delivered to us within 10 minutes. That being said it was absolutely worth the experience and wait. We got to chat with one of the owners. Very nice conversation. The lobster rolls and the plated lobster were generous in portions and tasted fantastic! The homemade tartar and cocktail sauces are great. And the staff? Super nice. There is one downside. And I kinda hate to talk about it - I don't mean to pile on - because everything else was great. But if you're going to Red's, allow LOTS of time in your schedule, because fast is not in the vocabulary here. As a Mainer, I've seen plenty of lobster rolls, but I've never seen one overflowing with lobster like this. They easily give you 10+ ounces of lobster for $38, which is impressive. The service was excellent. Everyone was very friendly, and they even handed out free popsicles to people waiting in line, which was a nice touch. One thing that disappointed me was the lobster roll preparation. My boyfriend ordered the mayo lobster roll, and I ordered the butter lobster roll. I expected his to be the traditional Maine-style lobster mixed with mayo and mine to be warm lobster tossed in butter. Instead, both came with cold lobster meat, and the butter and mayo were served on the side. I understand this probably helps them serve customers faster, but it wasn't what I expected. The line was another drawback. We waited about two hours, which we knew going in, but I'm still not sure the experience justified the wait. I also found it a little uncomfortable eating while a long line of hungry people watched, knowing we had been standing in their shoes not long before. On the positive side, the whoopie pie from Love & Lemon was the best I've ever had--super moist with thick, delicious filling. Overall, I can see why Red's is popular, especially for first-time visitors and tourists. The food was good and the portions were generous, but I probably wouldn't return during peak tourist season. I'd consider coming back during a quieter time of year when the wait is much shorter. If you're looking for a similar Maine lobster experience without standing in line for 2-3 hours, I'd recommend Dry Dock in Portland. The food and drinks are excellent, and their lobster rolls are some of the best I've had. You can get them cold with mayo or warm with butter, and they use a seasoning that complements the lobster without overpowering it. The rest of the menu is great as well. I waiting in line for about an hour- no sitting or getting distracted- just stand and watch others eat their giant rolls. It was almost too much to bear. Finally ordered and was surprised to see that the day's market price of the sandwich was only $36...it may sound like a lot but I swear there were two whole lobsters on the bread. They sandwich was served with the best melted butter I've ever had...I poured it over the top of the sandwich and really was in heaven. I don't know why, but I ordered a side of onion rings which were fantastic but I could barely get to them after all the lobster meat. This is the sandwich I'll be dreaming of. read more

Still great though not as great. Some of the portions appeared to be smaller thought the prices are still good. We don't eat Lobster but looking at the prices, the Lobster Roll, despite being humungous, is $38. I still don't get why the line moves so slow though it appears the person taking orders is multitasking - again is it lack of available workers, available room inside the kitchen (I have seen many of the small roadside stands make the logistics work) or by design to make passers-by see the long line and want to stop? unsure but the food should speak for itself. We make sure to stop by Red's every time we are in Maine. The lines are usually super long but it's so worth it. The lobster rolls are A+. Kate's butter takes it to the next level. The employees are super nice. Give it a try, you won't regret it. read more
