After seeing this place on a food network show, we decided to stop at it on our way for a vacation at Bar Harbor. I read lots of reviews and many people said it wasn't worth the wait or it wasn't better than what you can get at lots of other locations. We decided to give it a try anyway. I have to say we weren't disappointed. The lobster rolls were amazing. They had so much lobster in them and were really tender and sweet. Food wise we were really happy. The downside was that we waited in line for two hours. Our timing wasn't great as a tour bus had just got there and unloaded right before us. Had we known the line would move so slowly, we probably wouldn't have waited since the temperature outside was in the mid 40s; which we also didn't dress for. There is some outdoor seating but after a two hour wait in what felt like freezing temps, we decided to eat in our car. lol All in all, we would go back if we head that direction again because it was that good. read more

The line was awful, and took a really long time! The music was great! We went because my daughter is celiac, and the reviews were great. We screwed up, because we went on a Monday, and they are closed. We actually drove all the way back there a few days later. Sooooo worth it! Red's is known as one of the best lobster rolls in Maine. It has been featured on Good Network and visited by several celebrities. We were told there is always a long line . When we arrived there was a line, and there were approximately ten people ahead of us. The line moved very slowly. We were not aware they only accepted cash or check, fortunately we had cash on us. We ordered lobster rolls, lobster kabob, lobster plate and fried mushrooms. They have patio seating. The lobster rolls were huge. The lobster was fresh, but we all would have preferred if it was cut into smaller pieces to fit in the bun. The lobster kabob was classified as an appetizer and it was much smaller than anticipated. The lobster platter was described as served in lettuce with lemons and tomatoes. It actually was on one piece of lettuce, but the portion was generous. The lobster rolls were $38 and the plate $40.75. The quality of the lobster was very good, but the buns could have been bigger and better. This is easily the best lobster roll I've ever had (and I've tried a lot). So fresh. So meaty. It's honestly as much meat as three lobster rolls from other spots. You could probably get away with splitting it with your partner if you try other stuff on the menu. Also tried the whoopie pie and Maine blueberry cake and I recommend both. Between three rolls, two desserts, one fry, one blueberry soda it came out to 141. We arrived around 2:30pm on a Thursday and waited approximately 1.5 hours (a good benchmark is the end of the fence by the outdoor seating area is where we started). Only downside...the wait. Bring an umbrella (but they were passing some out anyway, how nice!!). Bathroom situation is a port o potty a minute walk away. Otherwise..head over to Jodie's across the street get a cold one and use the bathroom while someone holds down your spot in line. I will recommend this spot to everyone visiting Maine! 8-5-25. We drove an hour and a half from where we were vacationing to visit Reds. Mostly because of all the social media attention it draws. Well it didn't disappoint. Definitely one of the best lobster rolls I've ever had. Be prepared to wait on line though.......I probably waited an hour and 20 minutes to get up to the counter to place my order. So maybe take a snack with you if you're really hungry so you don't get hangry waiting in line like I did . The lobster roll was a bit expensive ($36.00), BUT you do get probably twice the lobster meat as any other place serves you. It's a NICE portion that's served chilled on a buttered bun with a side of melted butter. I really liked it this way because nothing masked the flavor of the lobster......and if you do choose, add your own butter or mayo to your liking. I just added a little salt which was perfect. We also ordered the fish and chips (fried haddock with sweet potato fries), which was very good but the fish batter could've used a little more crunch. The grilled haddock sandwich with cole slaw and melted cheese on rye bread was really good. Reminded me of a reuben sammie but with fish. The fried shrimp platter with french fries were just o.k., as was the chicken nuggets platter (but who comes to Reds for chicken nuggets anyway)? Fried scallops were decent as well. The real star of the show here was obviously the lobster roll.....so whatever you do, make sure to order that. All the other food is good, but not a standout. The staff there is friendly and they are working hard. It seems like the line never really dies down. I like the system they employ......only after ordering are you allowed to sit down and occupy a table. This works great because there is no "holding tables", especially if you come with a large group. So you sit down after ordering and your food is brought out to you, then once your done it allows everyone that's been waiting in line to ensure they get a seat to enjoy their food. Yes the wait is crazy but it's so worth it. Pro tip to get the coleslaw and add it to your roll with the butter... *chefs kiss*. Will shout out the staff too because even with the constant line, they are checking in on everyone, offering umbrellas for the sun while you wait and even giving delicious samples. We have been coming to Maine since 2014, at least once a year and most of the time twice a year and we always make Reds our first stop after flying into Portland and driving up the coast and then again in our way back to the Portland airport at the end of our trip. We were driving up the coast from Portland to Booth Bay Harbor at the end of September and decided to stop at the iconic Red's Eats for a lobster roll. We were not on a schedule, so we had all the time in the world. It happened to be a very unusually warm day and the wait was about 90 minutes. We met some interesting people and had some great conversations while waiting our turn. I am so glad we did this! Lobster is my favorite food and my lobster roll was by far, the best I have ever eaten. There was so much tail meat! I was worried about the seating, but that was not an issue. There is plenty of seating and an abundance of "overflow" seating at picnic tables just across the street. We savored a freshly made whoopie pie for dessert and it was out of this world. So delicious! I took the trip up here from Portland after my car rental service recommended it. Definitely the most fresh, stuffed, and tender lobster roll I have ever had. It was certainly unforgettable-- sweet, fat, and juicy! While I'm not a local, it was definitely the best lobster roll of the trip, and a highlight for my tourist wants. The scallop is also delicious. Note that the breading for it is sweet. The service is kind, but note that the wait can be REALLY long, especially when we visited on the weekend. 4.75 stars. I was planning on doing a trip all across Maine to find the best lobster roll but after going here the idea became laughable. This is by far the best lobster roll I have ever eaten, and it's not even close. Another reviewer noted that they can't stress enough about how perfectly cooked this chilled lobster is and I have to agree. Adding in a melted cup of drawn butter from local legend Kate's only adds to the decadence. The chunks of lobster are massive and delicious. You will definitely have massive amounts of lobster fall outside of the roll, and you won't care because you will dunk it in the aforementioned butter and be very happy. A word of advice: make sure you show up very early. You do not want to wait as this line takes forever to move. It might not seem so hot, but waiting in line in the Maine sun was surprisingly difficult. Your experience will be negatively affected if you have to wait over an hour and most people will have that experience. Don't be like most people. The very first spots in line have a little bit more shade so it's okay if you are waiting there. We also tried a lobster kebab and it was fantastic. I got the craft soda option and it was a better Instagram picture than an actual experience. If it weren't for the massive wait and the plain fact that I don't live anywhere near here, I would note that their hot dogs sound pretty awesome as well. I didn't have enough room to try their wild blueberry cake or whoopie pie, but I imagine those are quite good as well. Worth the wait. First off the service was phenomenal! The day was hot so they passed out free umbrellas and ice pops. They served the gluten free items first and were attentive they were on a different tray! The gluten free bread was homemade, thick, and delicious (definitely best homemade sandwich bread we have tried). The lobster roll came with hot butter , but was not a regular butter... Kate's butter of Maine... I swear this may a big difference from regular brand butter . The fried lobster kebab was outstanding. The lobster roll very outstanding. The quantity of meat, the claw and tail mix was perfect blend and price was not bad for 36.00 with the size, quantity, quality compared to other lobster rolls I have eaten in Maine. I must say that I have eaten lobster rolls at most Massachusetts famed lobster roll locations, different areas of Maine from Portland to Bar Harbor and many along the way... Lobster rolls all areas of Rhode Island, Some Connecticut. This was a top of list one at Reds... I was think the butter set it high on rankings. The other great thing at Reds is I believe the two woman I met working there assume sisters and daughters of the late Red... I feel torn about leaving this review, but man, as a native Mainer I have to. In all my years of stopping at Red's to grab a lobster roll knowing there would be a wait, I always planned on an hour maximum, and I don't think I ever waited longer than 45 minutes. I realize that I usually stopped by on my way back to Massachusetts on a Sunday, but still. My husband waited in line for us on a Saturday night while I kept our dog busy, walking her around and hanging out with her near the water. We definitely could have gotten a decent lobster roll closer to where we were staying in Sabattus, but we thought a drive to the coast and eating at Red's would be nice (plus, my husband never had Red's before and I wanted him to try it at least once). The line wasn't too bad when we joined. Only just around the corner near the back (right before the wine bar), so I figured an hour max. God I was so wrong. It took TWO AND A HALF HOURS. why? Like what on earth would make it take that long? If the line had wrapped around the block and gone much further down Railroad Ave, I'd have known to stay away and we would have left. But you know when you commit to something and you have to see it through? An hour into the wait, that's what happened to us. So, like idiots, we waited. No food in the universe is worth that long of a wait, and I still don't know why it took that long. It's been visited by celebrities. It's definitely a tourist attraction. So, the bottom line is ... if you want to sample their food, you will have to wait in line for 2 hours or more. That being said, the lobster roll is great! Is it the best I ever had? Not so sure. One of those rare places that's a tourist magnet yet lives up to the hype and even exceeds it. Lobster Roll: Gigantic, overflowing with meat that's cool, fresh, firm, slightly snappy, slightly sweet, and very minimally dressed, on a buttered, griddled hotdog bun. Hot butter served on the side for drizzling, but I skip it because lobster this good doesn't need it. It's also a surprisingly good value at $36, give or take with seasonal variation. Fried Clams: Very good. Crunchy, slightly sweet, and substantial under the batter. Fried Scallops: I like getting the dinner to get a little taste of scallops in addition to the lobster roll. This also gets you coleslaw (creamy, crunchy, nothing exciting) and fries (thin, crisp, nicely done). As for the scallops, no crunch on the batter, but jumbo, sweet, juicy interior that made up for it. Fish and Chips: Lots on the plate, with each of the three pieces both wide and thick, surrounded by crisp batter that didn't dominate the fish. White, mild fish that felt fresh and had a nice moistness, as good as any seafood shack anywhere other than the legendary Bet's Fish Fry in Boothbay, who makes the best ever. Accompanying fries long, dark, crisp, and tasty. Hot Dogs: I haven't tried these yet, but at one dollar each, worth a look someday. And they looked good on a neighboring table. Red's is popular and right on the main drag, so lines can be very long (I counted 60+). Get there early to wait significantly less and in significantly lower temperatures than the sun-drenched latecomers. That said, the gracious staff often hands out sun-guarding umbrellas, cups of ice water, and even some fried treats as samples. After you order, they escort you to the deck, which is laid back, shady in spots near the shrubs, and closed off to seat-campers. After you receive your food, they check back often to see if you need anything. Professionally run and delicious. Red's Eats has been featured on "Somebody Feed Phil" and many others have visited this establishment. When we arrived, the line looked quite manageable. It was deceiving though, as it still took an hour before we ordered. It could be because it's a way to manage the food orders and seating availability by slowing the line. Thankfully, they have umbrellas for guests waiting in line. Without it, I would've been miserable. Cash or check only. There is an atm if needed on the side. After all this wait, I was a bit skeptical on how much better can it be than other lobster rolls I've had. But it's true, it has the best lobster rolls. It came out with a heaping pile of succulent lobster meat. It was enough for both my bf and I. We also had fried clams. They were delicious as well. I regret not ordering a full pint of them. We were traveling through the 'Prettiest village in Maine" to Arcadia National Park and took a halt at the famous Red's Eats compelled to try it based on its high praises on the internet. We were not disappointed and realized it pretty soon as we saw a person running frantically ahead of us to be 1 place ahead of us in the line. Here is the summary of our experience there: 1) Ambiance 6/5: It has a small counter with a big line and some seating behind the place where you can enjoy the breeze and a little view of the sea while enjoying their famous lobster rolls. Their fame can be judged from the long line. 2) Service 5/5: Even though they are super busy and brimming with customers, their service was pretty quick and they made sure to check on us to see that everything was good. 3) Food 5/5: Here is the summary of the food we had: The mood was set right from the moment they handed over their fried tempura shrimps. Although I am allergic to shrimp, I tried it, and boy they were amazing. Not to be missed. This just set the right tone for us. So watch out for free servings if you are lucky while waiting in line. a) Lobster rolls: I personally am not a fan of lobster but my mother-in-law likes them and she loved it here. It was soft and juicy. Totally worth the hype. b) Fried clams: They were delicious, soft, and spongy. I liked them, especially with the dips and the fried they were served with. c) Fried shrimps: If you have not read my above fandom for it, here's me loving it again. Ted's is the bomb!! Best lobster roll we had on our visit to Maine and it wasn't close. 2-3 times as much lobster piled high and toasted bread was perfect. The onion rings are incredible as well! Not sure what the hold up was but we finally got to the order window at 12:10, ordered 2 lobster rolls for $36/ea, and they brought them out at 12:15. That's 45 mins to serve 7 parties, all couples and a party of 4. It's a pretty setting by the water albeit alongside a busy exhaust filled road. All that said - best lobster roll we've had all trip. I followed the Netflix show - somebody feed Phil and visited this place. There did seem to be a down time for the place, whether it would be Sunday or Wednesday afternoon, you can count on being in the long line. After 25 mins in the sun, I got impatient, wondering how good could this be, tho the reviews by the fences are top notched. When I finally get to order, the crew was very nice and helpful. It took us less than 45 secs to order and 5 mins later, my order came to the table. I have to say that the lobster roll looked fantastic and the lobster meat was covering the whole plate and I copied barely see the buns. Sides, even fries, are $7.00. The worst part of the experience was the terrible, understaffed service. I stood in line on a Friday at dinner time with about 8 other befuddled people. None of us could figure out if the place was still open. We saw folks moving around, but couldn't figure out whether they were cleaning up and closing or still open. Not a person was waited on, no one explained to us what was going on To me the worst sin is lack of communication. So there we stood in a clump for 15-20 minutes not sure whether to leave or stay. Oh this place is a must to visit when you go to Maine. This place is a bomb!!!! The lobster just melt in your mouth and the flavor is outstanding. The service is outstanding. There's three ladies who work and no matter how busy they are, they have always a second or two to ask the customers how's everything and with the smile always. The line to order is long but the service is still outstanding. I don't mind waiting if I know that I will get an excellent food and service. The place is good, very authentic quality to attract people. Even though the line is long, there always be a table available to sit. When people are done eating, they go so other people can sit.
