Well, i have never visited before but read and always heard good reviews. I was visiting and drove intentionally to evaluate for myself. I thought this was going to be a tourist trap type visit. All the reviews, history, lines for waiting in mid October. Well waited 30-46 minutes in cold . Finally ordered lobster roll and a fried lobster Kebab. The lobster roll came with hot butter , but was not a regular butter... Kate's butter of Maine... I swear this may a big difference from regular brand butter . The fried lobster kebab was outstanding. The lobster roll very outstanding. The quantity of meat, the claw and tail mix was perfect blend and price was not bad for 36.00 with the size, quantity, quality compared to other lobster rolls I have eaten in Maine. I must say that I have eaten lobster rolls at most Massachusetts famed lobster roll locations, different areas of Maine from Portland to Bar Harbor and many along the way... Lobster rolls all areas of Rhode Island, Some Connecticut. This was a top of list one at Reds... I was think the butter set it high on rankings. The other great thing at Reds is I believe the two woman I met working there assume sisters and daughters of the late Red... I feel torn about leaving this review, but man, as a native Mainer I have to. In all my years of stopping at Red's to grab a lobster roll knowing there would be a wait, I always planned on an hour maximum, and I don't think I ever waited longer than 45 minutes. I realize that I usually stopped by on my way back to Massachusetts on a Sunday, but still. My husband waited in line for us on a Saturday night while I kept our dog busy, walking her around and hanging out with her near the water. We definitely could have gotten a decent lobster roll closer to where we were staying in Sabattus, but we thought a drive to the coast and eating at Red's would be nice (plus, my husband never had Red's before and I wanted him to try it at least once). The line wasn't too bad when we joined. Only just around the corner near the back (right before the wine bar), so I figured an hour max. God I was so wrong. It took TWO AND A HALF HOURS. why? Like what on earth would make it take that long? If the line had wrapped around the block and gone much further down Railroad Ave, I'd have known to stay away and we would have left. But you know when you commit to something and you have to see it through? An hour into the wait, that's what happened to us. So, like idiots, we waited. No food in the universe is worth that long of a wait, and I still don't know why it took that long. The food is good, yes, but many places in Maine have overstuffed fresh lobster rolls, so I HIGHLY recommend not waiting in this line like we did. Food is made in small the small shack and surfers are very nice and friendly. Lobster roll was absolutely delicious. Not sure it's worth the 2 hour wait, but if you want to learn more you can read on ... First, as you may know, there is a lot of hype surrounding this place. It's won several awards. It's been visited by celebrities. It's definitely a tourist attraction. So, the bottom line is ... if you want to sample their food, you will have to wait in line for 2 hours or more. That being said, the lobster roll is great! Is it the best I ever had? Not so sure. But what it does have going for it is a healthy portion of lobster ... meaning so much lobster meat in and on top of the roll that you can barely see the bun ... all at a very reasonable price (compared to others). One of those rare places that's a tourist magnet yet lives up to the hype and even exceeds it. Lobster Roll: Gigantic, overflowing with meat that's cool, fresh, firm, slightly snappy, slightly sweet, and very minimally dressed, on a buttered, griddled hotdog bun. Hot butter served on the side for drizzling, but I skip it because lobster this good doesn't need it. It's also a surprisingly good value at $36, give or take with seasonal variation. Fried Clams: Very good. Crunchy, slightly sweet, and substantial under the batter. Fried Scallops: I like getting the dinner to get a little taste of scallops in addition to the lobster roll. This also gets you coleslaw (creamy, crunchy, nothing exciting) and fries (thin, crisp, nicely done). As for the scallops, no crunch on the batter, but jumbo, sweet, juicy interior that made up for it. Fish and Chips: Lots on the plate, with each of the three pieces both wide and thick, surrounded by crisp batter that didn't dominate the fish. White, mild fish that felt fresh and had a nice moistness, as good as any seafood shack anywhere other than the legendary Bet's Fish Fry in Boothbay, who makes the best ever. Accompanying fries long, dark, crisp, and tasty. Hot Dogs: I haven't tried these yet, but at one dollar each, worth a look someday. And they looked good on a neighboring table. Red's is popular and right on the main drag, so lines can be very long (I counted 60+). Get there early to wait significantly less and in significantly lower temperatures than the sun-drenched latecomers. That said, the gracious staff often hands out sun-guarding umbrellas, cups of ice water, and even some fried treats as samples. After you order, they escort you to the deck, which is laid back, shady in spots near the shrubs, and closed off to seat-campers. The food was excellent, however you need to be prepared to stand in lines on the sidewalk next to busy route 1 for long periods before placing your food order. Our recent experience on a Thursday afternoon was an hour and 20 minutes standing in the hot sun. The establishment does provide you a hand umbrella for some relief. Unfortunately watched an older lady have heat issues requiring local EMS to send an ambulance. So, not a good destination for folks with kids, pets or intolerant to the sun or boiling heat. Odd thing was that there were often empty tables in the seating area even though the order line moved at a snails pace. Also seemed odd that the person taking the oders and your money was also putting orders together for the wait staff which slowed the ordering process significantly. Red's Eats has been featured on "Somebody Feed Phil" and many others have visited this establishment. When we arrived, the line looked quite manageable. It was deceiving though, as it still took an hour before we ordered. It could be because it's a way to manage the food orders and seating availability by slowing the line. Thankfully, they have umbrellas for guests waiting in line. Without it, I would've been miserable. Cash or check only. There is an atm if needed on the side. After all this wait, I was a bit skeptical on how much better can it be than other lobster rolls I've had. But it's true, it has the best lobster rolls. This is easily the best lobster roll I've ever had (and I've tried a lot). So fresh. So meaty. It's honestly as much meat as three lobster rolls from other spots. You could probably get away with splitting it with your partner if you try other stuff on the menu. Also tried the whoopie pie and Maine blueberry cake and I recommend both. Between three rolls, two desserts, one fry, one blueberry soda it came out to 141. We arrived around 2:30pm on a Thursday and waited approximately 1.5 hours (a good benchmark is the end of the fence by the outdoor seating area is where we started). Only downside...the wait. Bring an umbrella (but they were passing some out anyway, how nice!!). Bathroom situation is a port o potty a minute walk away. Sides, even fries, are $7.00. The worst part of the experience was the terrible, understaffed service. I stood in line on a Friday at dinner time with about 8 other befuddled people. None of us could figure out if the place was still open. We saw folks moving around, but couldn't figure out whether they were cleaning up and closing or still open. I came here in late October when it it was almost about to close and I came first thing in the morning and an hour before it even opened there was already like a small line however, given that I probably waited one hour versus 2 1/half hours that other people had to wait online. It was cool they gave samples during the line. I got the Whoopie pie the lobster roll and the sweet potato fries and Oliver absolutely amazing and understand the height of that the lobster roll and how they give you warm butter with it and the sweet potato fries are really good. We were traveling through the 'Prettiest village in Maine" to Arcadia National Park and took a halt at the famous Red's Eats compelled to try it based on its high praises on the internet. We were not disappointed and realized it pretty soon as we saw a person running frantically ahead of us to be 1 place ahead of us in the line. Here is the summary of our experience there: 1) Ambiance 6/5: It has a small counter with a big line and some seating behind the place where you can enjoy the breeze and a little view of the sea while enjoying their famous lobster rolls. Their fame can be judged from the long line. 2) Service 5/5: Even though they are super busy and brimming with customers, their service was pretty quick and they made sure to check on us to see that everything was good. 3) Food 5/5: Here is the summary of the food we had: The mood was set right from the moment they handed over their fried tempura shrimps. Although I am allergic to shrimp, I tried it, and boy they were amazing. Not to be missed. This just set the right tone for us. So watch out for free servings if you are lucky while waiting in line. a) Lobster rolls: I personally am not a fan of lobster but my mother-in-law likes them and she loved it here. Not sure what the hold up was but we finally got to the order window at 12:10, ordered 2 lobster rolls for $36/ea, and they brought them out at 12:15. That's 45 mins to serve 7 parties, all couples and a party of 4. It's a pretty setting by the water albeit alongside a busy exhaust filled road. All that said - best lobster roll we've had all trip. I followed the Netflix show - somebody feed Phil and visited this place. There did seem to be a down time for the place, whether it would be Sunday or Wednesday afternoon, you can count on being in the long line. After 25 mins in the sun, I got impatient, wondering how good could this be, tho the reviews by the fences are top notched. When I finally get to order, the crew was very nice and helpful. It took us less than 45 secs to order and 5 mins later, my order came to the table. I have to say that the lobster roll looked fantastic and the lobster meat was covering the whole plate and I copied barely see the buns. The meat was tasty and it was a perfect match with their hot butter. I have to say this is probably the best lobster roll you could get!! They probably used a whole lobster meat on it and it was awesome! I planned a whole trip to Maine around coming to this place so I am so happy that it did not disappoint. I got here about 1130 on Saturday, May 31 and there was a five minute wait. Lucky I know especially for my first time. Need to remember that this is not the norm especially on a sunny day during the busy season. The lobster roll was $35 and had to have had a pound and a half of meat. It served cold in a warm grilled bun but they serve you two good size side containers of local grass fed butter melted. Would I do it again...YES! And now, they have gluten free bread, which makes me so happy. Red's was first brought to my attention by one of my colleagues - we were both visiting Maine this summer and she spoke highly of their lobster roll. While lobster is not my favorite shellfish, I'm always one to try new food spots and do enjoy a roll from time to time. That being said, I wanted the Red's experience - especially in light of the fact that their lobster roll was named best in Maine, or best in New England (one of those). Anyway, my brothers and I carved some time into our itinerary to grab lunch here. Red's is located in Wiscasset - we were staying in Portland and it was about an hour drive north; that was fine by me - will travel for food. We timed it so that we got there about 30 minutes before opening since I heard the line could get long. Thankfully that worked out as there was already one forming by the time we parked. As we were waiting for them to open, I was reading up on the history of the spot as well as the notable people who have been here - most of this is displayed in the queue as you're waiting, but it's also easy to find stuff online. Red's itself is more like a stand - there's no indoor dining and you order at the window. They do, however, have a good amount of outdoor seating which you are escorted to after placing your order by a member of the staff. Relative to the length of the line I would say we were pretty close to the front when they opened, but we still waited close to an hour to reach it. I soon discovered that it mostly had to do with the fact that most of the staff was multitasking - the woman taking our order (who I think was the owner) was processing checks, staging trays, and also delegating the team. They didn't seem overwhelmed tho - this is a well-oiled machine. While the lobster roll is the star of the menu, they also have a good selection of other seafood as well as burgers and hot dogs - not to mention merch. We were there for the lobster rolls, which is what we ordered. Even though there were three of us - I heard they were big so we thought it would be best to get two and then an order of whole belly clams. It was not long after placing our order that it was served to us - and honestly everything I heard about the roll was true. I can't even begin to describe this roll - it's huge, overstuffed with what has to be the meat of one whole lobster (at least). I couldn't even see the bun underneath and it looked next to impossible to eat without a fork. The roll is Connecticut style - meaning that it was warm and served with drawn butter. Let's talk about that butter because holy crap it was amazing - I don't know what they put in it (nor do I want to) but it was some of the best butter I've ever had and complemented the lobster perfectly. I'm still thinking about it over a week later. The whole belly clams were also good, not soggy and really meaty. Overall, Red's was a total yes - this was seriously one of the best lobster rolls I've ever had, and combined with the friendly service made this a memorable experience. Wow the line was 2 hours on a Sunday afternoon. I give them A+ for making the wait as bearable as possible, including water, sun umbrella, and even doggy treat. They managed the crowd perfectly, taking you to a table only after you've ordered. The table are cleaned after each turn and the servers constantly check on you. I was recommended this place by a local I met in the plane. It was not hard to find. The parking is difficult as this place is by a residential neighborhood. Prepare to walk if you can't get lucky. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to wait at LEAST 1.5 hrs. The payment is CASH ONLY. I began my weight in a light drizzle. As I waited over an hour and a half I got rained on twice, but I was determined to chaste what was so special about these rolls. This was my fourth trip to Red's and was surprised I had not reviewed before. Located on the side of Route One, can not miss it! Parking with in walking distance and plenty of with a pool bloc parking lot down the street. Line was done tot he corner of the restaurant seating area. Didn't seem like it would take long so we jumped on line. While waiting we met some people from across the country and enjoyed conversation with. Along the way a nice young lady offered ice water as well as umbrellas to block the sun from frying. There is also much to read about the establishment including history and memorial to the original owner. We noticed many people or taking their food to go, in fact more then half the people who preceded us. Lobster rolls are $36 and we order two plus onion rings and fried zucchini. From start of line to food in front of us it took an hour and twenty minutes. Portions were HUGE as I remembered and you are offered drawn butter or mayonnaise for your sandwich. One of each for us. There was so much meat on the roll I had enough for lunch the next day. This was literally the worst Maine roadside fish stand I have ever eaten at. How does this get any good reviews??!!! I am so confused. We have a home in Maine and spend half the year here, and we often stop by roadside stands for lobster rolls and/or fried seafood and onion rings. And I've been vacationing in Maine my entire life and eating and loving lobster, fried scallops, shrimp, and clams, and of course those iconic onion rings since I was very young. And most stands are soooo good. Like I-can't-wait-for-summer-to-get-the-best-fried-seafood-in-the-world good. We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon and proceeded to wait in a line of about 12 groups in front of us for 1 1/2 hours. Not sure why. 12 groups at a well-working restaurant with take-out food should maybe take 20 minutes at most. The menu was not up to date or complete which was annoying. I had to ask if they had fried shrimp or scallops and asked the options and prices. They did have those things, but she didn't know the prices. We ordered a lobster roll, a fried scallop "basket", a water, and a small onion ring. The cost was $68 - cash only. We sat at the restaurant to eat. It was a small deck, with an upper and lower level. We sat at the upper level. Unfortunately we had to constantly swat flies while trying to eat, which kinda sucked. I did appreciate that they had a lot of umbrellas up to help stop the sun beating directly on diners. The food arrived and the lobster roll was really huge- and that is literally the only good thing I can say about it. We received it with 2 tubs of congealed butter. Probably used to be warm and liquid but were not when we received it. I appreciate lots of lobster meat like everyone else, but when having a lobster roll, I want the perfect combination of buttery, toasted roll mixed with sweet, succulent lobster meat. This was not that. I'm being honest here when I say that this roll was literally cold lobster in a standard hot dog roll and nothing else. No salt & pepper. No bit of Mayo (because the meat was cold, not warm as it's supposed to be if it's served with melted butter), no chives. Nothing. Just cold meat tossed in a roll. This roll is so far from the best lobster roll, I can't even express my confusion as to how it keeps winning awards. Maybe people from out of state who have never had an actual good lobster roll??? I have had SO MANY great rolls that blow this lazy, Ill-crafted roll out of the water. Heck, I make way better rolls than this one at home when I pick up local lobster meat from the local store. But the scallop "basket ", this was way worse. $20 for 4 scallops, covered in grease with a batter that was inedible and fell off the meat in a gross clump if you tried to pick it all up at once. And worse, it was all served on a paper plate with the frozen fries stuck in the bottom layer of grease- which made them completely inedible. See pics. This was also supposed to come with coleslaw- which it did not. And no tartar sauce or any dipping sauce either. It was the worst fried scallop I have ever eaten. We tossed 2 of the 4. The onion rings were also terrible. They were not the wonderful, thin-cut hand battered onion rings available at every roadside stand in Maine, but were a medium cut, fairly thick onion in a goopy hard, thick batter that had no flavor. I tried 2 and tossed the rest. Which I have NEVER done before in my life. I LOVE onion rings and look forward to having them as often as possible in Maine in the summer, because they know how to make them the best here. But not this place. Please, do yourself a favor and skip Red's Eats. Find any other roadside stand and you will have a much better, cheaper, and faster meal. read more
