Huge lobster rolls, piled high with sweet meat. $38 market price. We had a lot of lobster on the trip so we wanted to try something else. We tried the crab roll and some fried whole belly clams. The crab roll was quite a disappointment when it came to size compared to the lobster roll. Granted it was cheaper at $23 but I figured same size. The clams were pretty good. Fresh. We ordered a 1:/ pint for $14.50. They were battered and it was advertised that way but I prefer breaded vs battered. Checked this famous place off the list. If I returned I'd probably just go for the lobster roll which is the specialty. It was a 45 min wait.

Not worth the wait really. I'll lead with that. Dead ass serious about that!! If you read no more, listen! We waited 1 hour 50 mins in line. If it had been mind blowing that would have been cool. It wasn't great even, it was just ok. It is cool to say I've been here I suppose, but I have no intention of coming back. It's a roadside shack with a bunch of folklore tied to it. We saw it driving in, saw the crowds standing in line, and wondered WTF was going on. Later that day we met a man that said "we had to eat at Red's while we were here". He touted it as life changing. People really do love it though. The guy in front of me drove an hour to get there, to wait two hours in line, to drive back another hour home. That's insane. My three stars is a personal stand and a reminder to myself and is not necessarily the experience you may have. You may just love it and tell other unsuspecting victims. It's not a negative thing on them totally, it's just that I don't like people enough to stand around with strangers for hours, all who are slightly bitchy because the wait is so damn long. Seriously, the food is not bad. It's pretty good. It's just not hours of waiting good. I did think it was pretty bland. Just cold lobster meat and lukewarm butter to dip. Fried scallops were ok. Onion rings were good. Four stars no wait, maybe. There is a physiologic thing that happens at places like this that I visit, at least for me. You keep thinking, oh it's not going to take that long, but you are wrong. The line goes around where you sit to eat (if you are lucky to find a seat) so, as you wait in line to eat you can just watch people eating their meals. Then you sit down next to the other people that are also still bitchy about being in line. It's awkward really. "Stop looking at me Margaret and get your own damn lobster!" You better be ready to be outside if you come here. Thats where you will be for a while. I would recommend packing a lunch if you do. It would be cool if the seating and area were somehow partitioned as to not have hungry bitchy people watch you eat. Alas, I am just rambling now. Just a note.... State Line Lobster in Kittery has the best Lobster Roll I have ever had! This food did not hold a candle to them! '26 - 31

OPENING DAY 2026 I was lucky enough to be in the area on opening day and knew it was finally time to try the famous Reds Eats as a native Mainer. Since it was opening day on a wednesday and i arrived around 1:45 i only waited in line about half an hour so i cant speak on wait times during peak season. I do know however that i would wait in a longer line to eat this food again because it was more than worth it. First of all the customer service is exceptional- i dont think i have had a better more friendly experience. They give you sampled while you wait in line and during my time they were handing out their beer batters fried shrimp and wow even that was amazing! I waited while it was cold and rainy as well so the hot shrimp was a wonderful surprise. I watched ever interaction the employees had with every individual party and the never wavered in politeness or excitement. They treated everyone with the same respect and really took their time catering to them. Now onto the food, i ordered the sweet potato fries with the house made maple aoili, a side of cole slaw, and of course the lobster roll which was a market price of $38 on opening day. The food came out so fast, the wait times are not because they don't get food out in a timely manner because they were an excellent well oiled machine in the kitchen. This lobster roll is absolutely STUFFED with lobster. I had at least two tails, two claws, and then some in my one hot dog roll and i couldn't even pick it up. Let's just say i fork and knifed it until i could take a bite of the roll which i am not complaining about at all! Comes with hot butter on the side which i liked more than just being dumped onto the roll beforehand. Pro tip- get the side of sweet potato fries because the house made maple aoili it comes with is also fantastic when you dip your lobster roll in it! Plus the fries were perfectly hot and crispy. Cole slaw was a great addition too for some crunch! I love being able to look out into the water as you sit outside, and i was even bundled up in a jacket but i wouldn't change my experience for anything! This is by far the best price point for any lobster roll you'll get in Maine when we are talking about quality and quantity. You will leave extremely satisfied and the experience is going to stay on your mind until you go again! I can't wait for my next chance to eat at Reds!

Arrived 10 minutes before they opened and waited 90 minutes in line on a Thursday in early June. I don't know if it is worth the wait but the $38 lobster roll did not disappoint. It was delicious. The fried clams were average. I only knock off 2 stars for all the self promotion. I don't need an employee to come and disturb my meal for the sole purpose of asking me to scan the QR code (that wasn't even at my table and would have had to get up and walk over to) so I can vote them the best lobster roll in Maine. It was so unbelievably tacky. And diminishes all the signs of winning best lobster roll in Maine when they presumably personally ask every customer to vote for them. Obviously this tactic is effective for them but the product should stand on its own, and it does.

    Lobster rolls and fried scallops.

As a Mainer, I've seen plenty of lobster rolls, but I've never seen one overflowing with lobster like this. They easily give you 10+ ounces of lobster for $38, which is impressive. The service was excellent. Everyone was very friendly, and they even handed out free popsicles to people waiting in line, which was a nice touch. One thing that disappointed me was the lobster roll preparation. My boyfriend ordered the mayo lobster roll, and I ordered the butter lobster roll. I expected his to be the traditional Maine-style lobster mixed with mayo and mine to be warm lobster tossed in butter. Instead, both came with cold lobster meat, and the butter and mayo were served on the side. I understand this probably helps them serve customers faster, but it wasn't what I expected. The line was another drawback. We waited about two hours, which we knew going in, but I'm still not sure the experience justified the wait. I also found it a little uncomfortable eating while a long line of hungry people watched, knowing we had been standing in their shoes not long before. On the positive side, the whoopie pie from Love & Lemon was the best I've ever had--super moist with thick, delicious filling. Overall, I can see why Red's is popular, especially for first-time visitors and tourists. The food was good and the portions were generous, but I probably wouldn't return during peak tourist season. I'd consider coming back during a quieter time of year when the wait is much shorter. If you're looking for a similar Maine lobster experience without standing in line for 2-3 hours, I'd recommend Dry Dock in Portland. The food and drinks are excellent, and their lobster rolls are some of the best I've had. You can get them cold with mayo or warm with butter, and they use a seasoning that complements the lobster without overpowering it. The rest of the menu is great as well. As an added bonus, it's right next to Porthole, so you can enjoy live music out on the deck while you're there.

    1. It's cash only and doesn't say that anywhere. We got a lobster roll and waited 30 minutes. It was rubbery and over cooked. Lots of meat, but not tasty. The butter tried to cover the over done meat, but it was not good. Would never come back, this is a huge disappointment.

Note: CASH (or check) ONLY (atm on site) $89 for 2 Lobster Roll +1lb of meat Side Sea Scallops (4 huge one) 2 Whoopie Pies (1 chocolate, 1 pumpkin maple) We stopped in around 1pm, about a week before the last day of the season. We were served around 230pm. They were out of several things, but still had a lot of options. As we were planning to get clams, which were sold out, we opted for a side of sea scallops & I may never order clams again. They are THAT good. Staff were as friendly as ever & I love that they incorporate things from other local business - like the rolls/bread, butter & whoopie pies. There are benches built in around the deck. As the line gets long, it's no doubt helpful. Waits vary but can reach the 3hr mark. I feel like that is partly staff controlling the flow, as seating is available only after ordering. Once you order, off to the deck & they bring your food out. Delivery was pretty quick & there was ample butter, as well as a bag for leftovers, & hand wipes. Everything was delish - and, given current market prices, not crazy expensive. Especially since we bought 10 lobsters at the lobster pound for just shy of $200 2 days later & I'd say it took roughly 2 to get the same amount of meat. While the world knows that Red's is recognized with many awards as the best lobster roll... we now know that they also have the best seafood scallops! Dip them in butter and thank me later!

This was our first ever lobster roll and crab roll in the state of Maine and boy did we make the right decision. There are really only 3 negative things about this shop and those are the parking, the waiting/line, and it being cash only. If the wait wasn't so long I think I would give it 5 stars even with those other 2 but we waiting 2.5 hours in line. With those things aside the food itself was delicious. We got the lobster roll with butter, crab roll, and onion rings. Lobster roll was packed with lobster! It taste fresh and just a 10/10 with the butter! Crab roll was also a 10/10 and packed with crab. It was fresh, rich, and delicious. Onion rings were a 5/5. Great batter/coating and fried to perfection. If you have the time please stop here! We would definitely come back.

I've been eating at Red's for 32 years and it's always such a treat to see them thriving in Wiscasset. A true classic with excellent food and genuine hospitality!

Came here for the famous Red's Lobster roll. Wait time was about an hour but it was so worth it. We ordered 7 lobster rolls, 3 hot dogs for our 2 doggos, large fries and small pepsi. $36/lobster roll So much lobster per roll you could probably make another roll with it in other places. Staff are very nice and friendly. They're very generous with their portion size. Our dogs really loved the hot dogs as well. Highly recommend anyone to drive out of their way to come here. This is a must try for the east coast.

The lobster roll here is OUT OF THIS WORLD incredible. I mean, up until this very lobster roll, I didn't actually like them. Red's changed my mind on just how good a lobster roll can be. Their fries were also excellent, and their whoopie pie (which I didn't order, but received as a substitution bc they were out of blueberry cake) was likely the best whoopie pie I've ever had. And the staff? Super nice. There is one downside. And I kinda hate to talk about it - I don't mean to pile on - because everything else was great. But if you're going to Red's, allow LOTS of time in your schedule, because fast is not in the vocabulary here. I don't mean to imply you should skip Red's, as it's really a wonderful place for great Maine food! I don't know if it's the size of the workspace they have, or just "how it's always been done" but it really felt like it took an inordinate amount of time waiting on line before we could order. Not sure there's any way they can address it, like I said it may just be the best that can be done given all the givens. But I grew measureably older waiting in the line. (But that first bite of delicious lobster roll helps you forget how long you waited.) Do I wish they could be faster? Absolutely. Do I want them to do anything that might make their food less delicious? Not a chance. So when you've got some time in your day, stop by Red's to enjoy a Maine classic!

    Hot lobster roll w/local butter.

Delicious, jam packed lobster roll - market price. Delightful staff but don't go if you are in a hurry. Line starts by 11am for 11:30am opening & moves slowly. Doesn't take credit cards so bring cash!

Red's Eats is one of the most iconic spots in Maine. It truly is a unique experience. The line was at the end of the block. They provided umbrellas and there was plenty of seating in line. It wasn't an uncomfortable wait, but it was around 1 hour and 30 minutes. If you really want to try Red's, it is worth the wait. If you simply want a good lobster roll and don't want a long wait, go to the next top rated place. Only wait in the line if you specifically want to try Red's. Once we go to the front the service was wonderful. The staff here is very kind and attentive. My wife & I wanted to order all the favorites. We ordered the following: 1 Lobster Roll - 10/10 - A wonderful must get item! A ton of fresh meat. Wonderful butter to dip in. You have to eat around the excess meat before you pick up the roll to eat it. Which is a great problem to have. 1 Crab Roll - 8/10 - Fresh tasting crab roll. Not exploding with flavor, but still a very solid roll. Definitely add butter! Side order of scallops - 10/10 - The scallops were huge and fresh. We used the house made tarter to dip and it was a spectacular part of our meal. 1 Hotdog w/ kraut & mustard - 10/10 - This is a must get for $4. It's so basic, yet such a marvelous food masterpiece. Such a high quality dog and toppings. Highly recommend. Sweet potato fries - 10/10 - These are perfect. They come with maple butter that is basically a desert. Well worth the add to your order. Onion rings - 3/10 - These were soggy and super underwhelming. I would not recommend these. Definitely a disappointment. Lob Kabob - 6/10 - it's really just not worth it. You get enough lobster with the roll and fried lobster isn't as good as non-fried. It wasn't bad, just not worth it. Clam Cake - 7/10 - A bit of a hint of clam in the taste, not overly seasoned. The tartar sauce saved it. Glad it was only $4. Overall it's a great and iconic establishment. Definitely worth the try once.

Lobster roll, grilled haddock sandwich, fries and onion rings. Yum!!!!

Ask the Community - Red's Eats

    Do they take reservations?

    They don't take reservations.

    Can you order online?

No. But if they did, there would be an equally long line to pick up!

Is this the place that Andrew Zimmern visited on Delicious Destinations?

    yes

Are lobster rolls traditionally filled with chilled lobster or warm lobster? I love them and I introduced my Mom today to them but at a different restaurant. Figured I'd ask here because Red's is the best?

Lobster is chilled. Served with small tubs of delicious sweet melted butter. I can't stress enough- the lobster is perfectly cooked. I don't understand how the claws remain so tender.

How long does the line typically take?

We waited an hour and we weren't even at the back of the line. WORTH THE WAIT!! Best lobster roll and scallops!!!

Is I the lobster roll warm or cold? Would it be good later?

It is cold. It's excellent. I can't imagine why it wouldn't be good later.

How much is a lobster roll this week?

    $30 and worth every penny

How much is a lobster roll this season?

    $36 this week

How much is the lobster roll this week?

    $24

Does Red's take cards or just cash?

Cash only. There is an ATM just outside if needed.

Will they be open in October?

I believe they're closed after Labor Day.

Is there an option to have the lobster roll without mayo? And does the same go for the crab roll?…

Yes, it is served with Kate's Maine butter that is churned daily, or you can have mayonnaise if you prefer.

How much is the lobster roll?

$26 as of the other day Worth it

How far up rthe coast is it. Past Portland?

About an hour - but I'd drive twice as far for the lobster roll. It is that good

Are the lobster rolls served hot or cold?

With hot drawn butter! They're fantastic!

When is the best time to go (meaning the shortest wait)?

Evening I believe. We went on a cloudy evening only because our planned late afternoon arrival was hampered by major traffic. Arrived around 7:30 and the wait was maybe 30 mins. We joined in line at the ice cream stand around the corner.

Will Red's still be open the week after Labor Day?

Yes! I believe that Red's is open from mid-April through Columbus Day weekend (early October). Call to check at (207) 882-6128 or email info@redseatsmaine.com.

So kind and making recommendations along with answering any questions you have. I think for the price of food you are really getting a great deal. Everything is made fresh in house from scratch which you can watch when you sit at the bar which i did. Watching orange juice wbu freshly squeezed and the donuts being put together from absolute scratch. The burger is definitely a great choice, I couldn't get over the house cut fries and the alna sauce was wonderful to dip them in. The burger was juicy and delicious and paired perfectly with the Volcanique red they had on the menu. My mother ordered the grits and eggs, this dish was cooked perfectly and had a house made salsa verde. The side of sourdough is a must get for shareable side. The house made jam was spectacular - they make every sauce and dip and spread in house and you can really tell. It elevates the meal so much. The drinks were a bit overpriced in my opinion but as someone who lives in Portland i wasn't surprised they were priced that way. The standout from the meal was definitely the sour dough donut. This was fried fresh to order and we had the seasonal flavor that was lime glazed and it was absolutely breathtaking! The crispy exterior with the fluffy inside was perfection - you have to order this. I definitely will need to come and check out dinner here. Highly recommend making the trek out!

Holy goodness!! Worth the hype!!…read more This was on my list of places to try and wow I am so happy we finally did! As soon as we walked in, i knew it would be great as you can see them working in the kitchen. I always think that shows how good the food will be if you can see them work. The food was fantastic, the donut was insane!! All of it was so tasty I can't wait to start driving up and taking everyone I know. I know I will love it through the seasons too! Everything is so fresh. The space is small but quaint so I would recommend getting a reservation! They do have a sweet bar you can sit at and look into the kitchen too. I loved the market, you can actually go and grab something to drink in there and have it for your table. The market also has quality cooking ingredients you can buy and cute nic nacs too!

Friendly staff, recommended the mix seafood, which comes in an assortment of fried seafood of calamari, shrimp, scallop, fish, also got the regular lobster and lobster stew 1. Mix seafood- The plate was huge, lots of fried calamari, couple pieces of fish, tiny shrimp, about 4-5 scallops. The breading/ batter was really good. the scallop was so good, I can order Scallop by themselves next time. 2. Regular lobster roll- 8oz of fresh tasty lobster, I think I prefer my lobster to be hot rather than cold. 3. Lobster stew- wow the lobster stew was delicious, this was my favorite, the brother was buttery, creamy, fresh tasty chunks of lobster. This might be the best Lobster stew I've ever had. Must order.

We did have to…read moreask a couple times though, and then talk to the manager, as the front of the house was sure "no one had gotten sick" but couldn't confirm that the fryers were clean. Don't worry, they are! She just wasn't aware of that. So safe gluten free fried seafood!! We got the fried clams and the fried shrimp. The portions were huge and they tasted amazing. The fries were good, typical fare. Definitely a place to go, whether you need your fried seafood to be gluten free or not!
