This spot is becoming an annual stop for us during our trip to Maine. Crab rolls are not at every restaurant, and this one is definitely worth it! Maine crab (probably Jonah crab) is one of my favorites now! The mayo isn't too heavy and the crabmeat shines. I was craving fried clams, and these hit the spot too. The potato salad is great. We had just visited the Botanical Gardens and found Karen's roadside stand on Yelp. I have attached pics of the menu, but no pics of food because we ate in the car since we were enroute to Boston. We had a wide variety of items from chicken fingers to crab BLT and lobster. The only unusual thing for us (we r from PA) was having pineapple in coleslaw. Service was good...poor Karen had multiple orders she was juggling. We loved the smell of the bacon on her grill! There were umbrellas on the picnic tables which kept us cool in the July heat. Food tasted fine, but surrounding parking and eating area unkept. Picnic tables not cleared. Could be a cute place with some work.

This was recommended to us by one of the local fisherman who assured us it was the freshest lobster and crab around. He was absolutely right! We had a lobster roll and a crab roll. They were both so tasty and delicious and you could definitely taste they were fresh! Karen was very attentive and super enjoyable to talk to. Hub and I made a trip back to Booth Bay, Me, it's about 5years since we were here. What the heck was I thinking, it is a beautiful place to vacation. Once arriving, this place had me at hello. One of my memories 5 years ago was eating at Karen's Hideaway roadside stand. We got settled in at our Campground and the next day we made a bee line to Karen's for the best ever Lobster Roll in Booth Bay, bar none! A roadside stand and you eat your meal on picnic tables with umbrellas and enjoy the wildflowers and cool breeze. You can get small and large Lobster Rolls with either potato salad made with cheese and bacon or slaw made with pineapple, both are just delicious and made fresh daily, nothing like I ever had and a tip just so you know, the slaw recipe is Karen's hubby's mother's recipe, a family affair. We both got large Lobster rolls, hub got his with light mayo and I got mine naked with drawn butter, both with that wonderful potato salad and fries, piping hot. Talk about pigging out and not an ounce of guilt!! It was so fantastic, we ate both of the lobster rolls. They have a bunch of other menu options, crab roll, hot dog, hamburgers and shrimp and clam dinner's. Can soda to drink and Utz brand chips. We got a free tour of the live lobster tanks and Garry even posed for a picture for me. What a nice man with a a great gift of gab, lucky us! Very pleased with our first visit here, I must say that the atmosphere and surroundings are lacking but the lobster roll was quite good. The roll was the typical, standard sized, buttered and grilled NE style hotdog bun. The chunks of meat were a bit on the large size which made it hard to chew at times. They were available with mayo or butter. We got one with mayo and found the balance very good. The lobster meat was excellent and flavorful and definitely worth the visit. If you are a tourist, please do not judge places like this by their looks...they can be very rewarding. read more

Was in Boothbay for a week and ate at Karen's twice. First time I had the crab roll. Very different from crabmeat I've had before, but the flavor was delicious and the amount of crabmeat was generous. And the potato salad was sooo good. Second time I had the lobster roll and 2 servings of potato salad. The crab and lobster were dressed with a just right amount of mayo after we ordered. Very fresh tasting and delicious. I eat a lot of lobster when I visit Maine and Karen's lobster rolls are wonderful. read more

Had the lobster BLT. After the first bite, I loved it so much that I told my wife I was going to divorce her and run away with this sandwich. Easily the best I've ever had. Funky little shack on the side of the road, but definitely worth the stop. A couple of old-timers on the picnic bench's behind the restaurant swore by the crab roll. This was a last minute decision as not many places around the area were open at the time we were there. Karen was so sweet and very friendly, the food was prepared fast. My fiance got the steak bomb, half of the meat and cheese wasn't even in the roll once we got to the car, I got the crab BLT... DELICIOUS. The bread was toasted perfectly, it was amazing. I did feel awful stomach cramps the entire rest of the night, could have been unrelated I suppose but I'm going to assume it was from the crab as my other two friends who also got the seafood also didn't feel well. For years when we visited Maine we would always go and stand in line at Red Eats for a lobster roll. Don't get me wrong they are good but Karen's are spectacular! Don't judge this book by its cover. This place looks old and weathered on the outside but you will not find a better lobster roll. The large is on a sub roll which you need to contain the massive amount of sweet juicy meat. As of this posting the large was $30 and comes with chips and either pineapple slaw or loaded potato salad. A small is $20 and comes on a hot dog bun but treat yourself and go for the large. Better service you will not find anywhere. Karen let us try a whole cup of her crab meat and it was delicious. She makes a sandwich called the " Big Sexy " which is crab salad sandwich with bacon. The inn owner where we stayed said it was like a pound of crab meat. Kind of regret not trying but I don't regret the epic lobster roll! Looks like Red's has some serious competition! read more

Karen's was recommended by a local Boothbay Harbor resident, and I grabbed a lobster roll on the way out of town today. The question is, and it is probably relative, what makes the best lobster roll????? In my opinion it involves the selection of lobster meat combined with the prepared condiment and, finally, the choice of the "roll." Karen's place is a little, roadside joint that no one would probably pay attention to. Why should you, since there are so many of these little places dotted along the roads in Maine? Since it is not possible that one, normal person can sample ALL of these little joints around Maine (if I was unemployed and wealthy, I would certainly consider this a very delicious pastime), I can only provide my opinion about Karen's as compared to other lobster rolls that I have enjoyed throughout Southeastern Maine. Karen's Lobster Roll (I ordered the "small" which was only $11.00) contained all joint and tail meat (see photo). The mayonnaise was very, very light; in fact, you can order the lobster roll "naked" which contains no condiment whatsoever. The top-sliced roll was toasted and buttery. You can select a "large" lobster roll on a hoagie for just a few dollars more; I only assume that you will get even more choice pieces of lobster meat! By the way, this little roadside joint has a nice setting of clean picnic tables along with light music as well as bathroom facilities. If your mouth is watering for a lobster roll on the way into Boothbay Harbor and you just can't wait to check into your hotel, please stop at Karen's - you won't be disappointed! read more

Mayo to lobster ratio, toasted bun, chunks of lobster versus little pieces and of course price Karen's delivers in all aspects. Stopped on our way out of boothbay harbor on a whim. Don't let the outside fool you - this place serves excellent seafood. We got the pick 3 lunch - piece of haddock with fries and onion rings ($10) and the haddock club (also $10). Huge portions of fish on both plates, easily double the size of a sandwich I got yesterday at a different place. This is definitely your typical local spot. We decided to grab some lunch on our 1st day in Boothbay. The owner here...I assume Karen is really sweet. We ordered 2 lobster rolls and sat in the yard area with picnic tables to eat. This food shack offered burgers and sandwiches too. While the lobster rolls were good the cole slaw is slammmmming! I would not recommend Karen's hideaway. My son and I stopped a few weeks ago, parked the car (there was no one around). We walked to the window and stood there for at least five minutes, the lady inside was counting on her fingers and never even acknowledged us standing there. I understand she may have been busy but it takes two seconds to look up and say I'll be with you soon. After another five more minutes went by we returned our car and drove away! Awesome Lobster!! As far as I'm concerned, Best Lobster Roll you will find in Maine. The owner steams the lobsters in ocean water and picks the meat herself. Fresh lobster!
