We are from San Diego and have gone to Boothbay almost every year for the past ten years. Bet's is by far our favorite for fried haddock! Some years we have missed her because of her limited hours. We are really hoping she will still be open when we get there on Sept 30 this year! Go there and tell her Steve Campbell from San Diego said hi! read more

If you are wanting a restaurant, this is not for you! If you want real Maine Fish & Chips this is for you right off the boat from a family that has fished for generations! It is a little outdoor walk up corner spot with picnic tables all outdoors! The fish is not fishy and lightly battered crispy! Food is not grease or oily. How does she make this magic happen? She does! Bet's sauce, dill & lemon is super yummy! Yummy yum, don't be a dumb and go get some! It's a locals spot that is shared among those who know! Now you know! read more

The great Yelp reviews lured us in, and the fabulous haddock sealed it -- Bet's is a wonderful home to a really scrumptiously tasty fish 'n chips. It's just a tiny little shack on the side of the road (we missed it first time around and had to circle the roundabout), but do they ever serve up the right stuff! They serve a huge -- really huuuuge -- portion of fresh, crispy haddock with homemade tartar and lemon dill sauces. It's not a plate of fish, it's a BOWL of fish, And it comes with crunchy fries, also a big serving. We think that may ruiined us for anyone else's haddock for a long, long time. There are picnic tables for your dining and a small parking area. Oh, it's also cash only, so come prepared. Our thanks to all the Yelpers who have recommended Bet's; we're delighted to join the crowd. read more

The place to get some of the best fish and chips you will ever eat! Fresh fish, lightly coated and fried to perfection. Served simply as "fish in a dish" or with fries that are homemade. Your choice of regular tartar sauce, Bet's own lemon dill sauce or malt vinegar. Take out place with picnic tables in the back with umbrellas for shade. Bring your own drinks or grab something from the soda machine. We'll worth the trip for fresh fish! read more

The best Fish n Chips I've had in Maine. The Closest you can get to eating fish n chips in England.

Gargantuan portion of the freshest haddock in light breading seasoned excellently. The scratch made fries are a bit squishy but delicious with malt vinegar spritzed. Their homemade tartar and lemon dill sauce are spectacular--ask nicely for both! I was ravenous and barely able to finish 1 portion read more

I've tried to eat at Bet's Fish Fry on multiple occasions. Each time I visited this place, I either arrived when it had just closed or when I arrived, they ran out of food. That's how popular and good this place is. Finally, after two years of trying, we were able to enjoy the amazingly delicious fish fry that everyone raved about. The batter was light and flavorful... And the fish was cooked to perfection. Not one millimeter was overcooked or overly seasoned. The ladies who make this food know what they're doing, and it's been worth every single attempt. I also love the outdoor seating and the picnic benches as it only adds to the experience. I look forward to trying it again. Next time I visit Boothbay, Maine. Yum! read more

Can't beat the locations right at the Common, and I love her artwork, but this is not my favorite fish and chips. The fries here have been kind of soggy and I didn't love the breading on the fish. Fish quality was very fresh and the portion was good. There are other options I prefer up 27 for takeaway or in the Harbor if you have time to sit down. read more

What a surprise this place was! We drove past this little hole in the wall with a full parking lot which speaks volumes. They specialize in fried haddock which was outstanding. One meal could feed three people and the fish was super fresh and delicious. It has a walk up window with outdoor dining. Our order came very quickly and the price was very reasonable. Highly recommend this place! read more

Been coming here since I was a kid and it's some of the best food I've ever eaten. 11/10! Best fried fish in the world, doesn't get better or fresher than Bet's read more

It's okay. Amount of food for $20 is out standing. However... Fries were soggy. Fish coating came right off the fish. This shouldn't happen on Fish & Chips. The crunch wasn't there due to batter coming off the fish. Also, the fish weren't seasoned. Not enough tartar sauce for the amount of fish that was given. Nice place to stop by to eat because locals love it. Few tables with umbrellas next to the hut. However, it's not even in my top 10 fish and chips places. Unfortunately, Gordon Ramsay's fish and chips chain restaurants were better than here. read more

We've been trying to come to Bet's for about three years, but every time we try, they've sold out of fish and had to close early. This time, we made it! The fish was amazing. I do, however, have two complaints that keep it from getting five stars: first, there was a sign which read, "No French fries today, too hot." I've worked in kitchen. Yes, it gets hot, having to constantly drop fry baskets. But it was barely 80 degrees outside. It was really disappointing to set out for "fish and chips" and discover that there are no chips. Second, there was no price adjustment given for half of the menu being unavailable. A "small fish and chips" (being a 1/2 pound of fish and a side of fries), is the exact same price ($12) as a "small fish in a dish", which is just a 1/2 pound of fish. logically, there should be some sort of difference in price. But, the food was fantastic, the ladies were friendly, and the long line moved very quickly. Hopefully next time they will feel like cooking fries! read more

Phenomenal fried haddock with tartar sauce or dill sauce or cocktail sauce. Come early so they don't run out of food. And they are closed on Sunday and Monday which meant I missed going there when I was in Maine in July. read more

When I first moved here to Ocean Point I was told to go to Bet's fish fry so I went. It was wonderful. Waiting on those lines was just a slight inconvenience when compared to the excellent food. Well, time passed by and we decided to try it again. What a disappointment! The fish was dry, the fish was bland, the service was reluctantly friendly. In your humble reviewer's opinion, the recipe needs to be rejuvenated and the owner needs to take a deep breath and pretend it's the grand opening again. We need the ole Bet's back. read more

If you are staying in Boothbay Harbor this place is an absolute must! Worth any line or long travel. The Haddock was incredibly fresh and flaky. Just the right amount of batter. Nice crispy crust. Perfectly tasty fries. Comes with tartar and dill sauce. I am a malt vinegar fan and they put it in spray bottles which makes it easy to coat your fish. Picnic area is nice and clean and offers both sun and shade. If you are anywhere near this place you have to have it. Bet's simply is the best! read more

Fabulous fish done just right. Found on yelp and glad I did. Joined a couple of ladies at a picnic table for some nice conversation.

Best fish and chips ever- whole order was $18 but it was the Wednesday of windjammer festival. Whole order comes with two huge fillets- lightly breaded haddock! Plus a bowl of shoestring fries. Was fun to eat here at picnic tables. Shared two orders between the 4 of us. read more

Bet's Fish Fry - Small fish fry - Seafood Near Me - Boothbay, Maine

The culinary highlight so far from two trips to Boothbay is Bet's Fish Fry. They're open 11-2 and basically only do two things: fish and fries. The fish (probably haddock) are very lightly battered, impossibly tender and extremely juicy--not to mention the length of a football. I liked it without any additions, but they've got standard tartar sauce and a dill version too. The fries are very thin and very very crisp--with some approaching Durkee canned potato sticks texture while still being fries. A large platter with two giant pieces of fish and a bowl of fries the size of a salad bowl: $21, easily feeding two. The only disappointment: they're closed on Sundays, or we would have returned the next day. We did come back in our next visit, ordered the same thing, and were just as happy. Sure, have your breakfast and/or dinner overlooking the water--but at lunchtime, skip the views and enjoy the fried fish of a lifetime right here. read more

Bet's fish fry is one of those unbelievable small places you really don't see anymore. They have a unique specialty and let me tell you it's delicious! I was in Bath on vacation with family when a local told me about Bet's. Being a food lover I knew I had to make the drive to find out for myself. Dragging the family into the car for the 1 hour pilgrimage to Bet's I finally arrived to a very small building with picnic tables to the left and parking for about 8 cars out front. I, as I usually do over ordered and got the small fish sandwich and a order of fish and chips. Did I mention that no one in my family likes seafood but me? Nevertheless I was amazed when my name was called and the massive tray of food was given. Bet's only does fried fish. No shrimp, no clams, no lobster, just fried fish. My sandwich was a small and it was overflowing with over half a pound of the lightest, fluffiest, freshest tasting haddock I had ever had. They also had a dill tartar sauce that was amazing with it. The sandwich was on a nice fresh water roll....no lettuce, no tomato, just fish. I could eat this fish all day. Such a light and flavorful breading, not at all greasy and fried to order. The fish and chips was two huge fillets of fried haddock with a gigantic bowl of hand cut fries. Fantastic value and delicious food! Did I mention only two people work in this place? Two very friendly lady's, one taking orders and the other cooking all this delicious fish. If you are anywhere near this place you owe it to all fish lovers in your family to stop and indulge. No doubt this is the fish meal I'll be comparing every other I'll ever eat to. read more

We went here on a recommendation .. We were a little hesitant as we generally have had bad experiences at these little road side stands. Not the case here.. They do fish. Only fish. Huge portions of fish and chips that were ready in minutes and they were busy.. My pics are of one regular order ($18) and one half order ($9) and it was more than enough for three adults. Fish was fresh and cooked perfectly.. Chips were a nice surprise with a combination of hand cut fries and potato chips. various condiments from Cajun seasoning to catchup to malt were available.. Along with a side of garlic butter or dill dip. Take your tray of fish and eat in the back and one of the picnic tables .. Yum. read more

The choices are fish and chips or fish on a huge or moderate size bun - that's it and that's all it needs to be. Incredibly fresh and delicious with a little tartar, dill sauce, vinegar or just plain. The batter is light and crisp, but definitely wouldn't last a ten minute car ride, so eat it fast! Looks like the prices haven't changed since 2007 - so it's a really good deal as well. One $14 order of fish and fries feeds a family of two adults and two young children easy. Love it! read more

Had this booked marked for over a year!! Finally on our trip to Maine we had the pleasure to stop here. The ladies here are so sweet and friendly. Their shack like food stand is very colorful so you cant miss it. Theres tables where you can sit or if you take it to go, they pack it up for you. Now, on to the food...their fish(Haddock) is AMAZING!!!!!!!!! Large flaky pieces dipped in beer batter and fried fresh to order. Their chips are almost like shoe string fries a little bit thicker though. We shared 1 order of fish and chips since 1 order comes with 2 large pieces and a bowl of fries. They have this dill tartar sauce that's so addicting you must try it over the regular one. They also have the regular condiments there but honestly you don't need any it's so good. Ok PLEASE READ THIS....MAKE SURE YOU GO EARLY!!!! THEY RUN OUT OF FISH EARLY!!!! read more

Extremely frustrated with yelp. I drove three hours out to my way to go to Bet's. A friend also recommended Reds. After I made it to Boothbay, I stopped at reds, and planned to head over to bets before the 2pm close. I clicked on the yelp direction link, and it took me an hour away from bets. The address says commons, not common, this is a big issue on yelps part. I planned these three days to Maine a few weeks ago, and a big reason was to have a Bet's sandwich. I am really disappointed that I missed the 2 pm cutoff, and will not have the opportunity to have this sandwich this year. Damn you yelp! read more

We discovered Bet's last week ( thank you Yelp reviewers! ) while driving from Ellsworth to catch a plane home from Portland. We debated going out of our way, but wow, was it worth it. Wonderful, fresh, lightly battered fried fish, in sandwiches or just plain. The fries are so delicious. They serve homemade tartar sauce, and they also have a homemade dill tartar sauce that you could eat just plain. The food is prepared at lightening speed, so it it hot and juicy. It was a beautiful sunny day, and we enjoyed sitting at the picnic table to eat our food. Very clean and pleasant. Very very friendly staff. Well worth the trip from anywhere! read more
