I am pleasantly surprised with my experience in this fine establishment. I wouldn't be shocked if "REDD" stood for reliably executing dashing deliciousness. I can tell that this place is managed with pride. The inside of the restaurant was elegant. My group and I walk in and we are greeted with a huge smile, our coats were checked in and we were immediately directed to our booth. We had two wonderful waiters and were both very professional and cared for our comfort and satisfaction. We started with fresh bottled water and cocktails. Service was extremely efficient, so my drink " how to disappear completely", was delivered in a glass bottle full of wood smoke and was poured in an old fashion cup garnished with an orange peel. I can smell the citrus vapor from the release of the peel oil. This cocktail was well balanced, and this is the theme in this restaurant. Everything was consistently well balanced. My group and I ordered 3 starters and 4 main meals. For starters the tuna tartar was fresh and decorous. The mixed elements of crispy fried rice, the delicate crunch of the asian pear, and the tender tuna took this dish to a level I never experienced. The squash ravioli was presented with multiple ways to enjoy squash. First you get creamy squash inside a perfectly crafted ravioli. Next, you have evenly cubed squash cooked to the point where you have the perfect resistance while chewing instead of being mushy. Then you have caramelized yellow squash giving the dish a happy color and the right amount of sweetness. Last you get the crunch from the buttery hazelnut- just beautiful. After that we have the lobster risotto. This dish was light and buttery. The lobster was done perfectly. Unexpectedly, we were treated by the chef with more of his heart and soul. We were surprised to receive four dishes to try on the house, three of which are not even on the menu yet. For average joes, we sure felt special. First, we got the cheesy buttery shrimp and grits (off menu). I am not a fan of grits at all, but oh my, I fell in love with this artwork. There were crunchy bits all over that gave this hearty dish a crunch. Even with the cheese consistency of a grilled cheese sandwich, it was light on the palette- super dish! Then we were greeted with delicious, crispy, tender, glossy chicken wings (In the menu). Even with a simple dish like this, the talent in the kitchen elevated those wings to new heights. I felt I was on cloud 9. Amazing how one has the skill to get a chicken wing crispy on the outside and maintain the protein juicy and tender on the inside. It gets more impressive when the restaurant manager casually walks to our table with the chefs fish and chips (off menu). As if I wasn't impressed with the skills shown with the wings, this fish was on point. The batter was golden and crispy while the fish was flaky and tender. The fries were tossed with salt and herb and not overpowering. TLC did not fall short on the fries by the way. Every single fry was crispy as a pringle on the outside and soft as baked potato on the inside- no clue how, perfection. At this point we thought the generosity curtain was closing, but no, we were wrong. The chef also blessed us with Holy lentil ( off menu and I added holy). This lentil had a subtle smoky flavor, buttery lentil and crispy prosciutto for a crunch- Yum! OKEY, feel free to take a break, I didn't even get to the main dishes we ordered yet. We welcomed the main dishes like homecoming. One out of the four dishes was the NY strip steak. The presentation was beautiful. The steak was perfectly cooked medium rare, and seared to perfection obtaining that satisfying crust on the edge. Most importantly, it was juicy and tender. The caramelized onion sauce and crispy kale was such a compliment to the dish. The mushroom added a bonus umph to it as well. Next, I wouldn't underestimate the grilled chicken here. This plate was full of bold colors and the flavors followed suit in their own ways. The chicken thigh was juicy and the shallot- balsamic jus paired nicely on my palette as I was dancing with the stars. The herb potato puree was so light and airy . Last but not least the Halibut. People! This dish made me tear up a little from authentic tasteful joy. The fish was cooked with love and passion like Jon Favreau from the movie chef. I mean, it was seared enough to have a crispy crust and a juicy, flaky fish. The Crispy sage and prosciutto just boost this dish to other dimensions. This dish did not cease to impress. The butter squash island surrounded by lobster butter was paradise, and such a great place to dip the crispy fries from earlier. FYI, the fourth dish was another order of the halibut dish. What's impressive is that the dish was literally identical in texture, taste and presentation which proves consistency in every dish. Being far from home, we wanted our last dinner to be amazing before we headed back to Colorado. Our starters (tuna tartare & pork belly) were delicious and we actually had time to eat them before the entrees arrived. I had the butter poached halibut, and it was probably the best halibut I've ever had. We also enjoyed our drinks! The service was great & we felt very taken care of. We actually had reservations elsewhere but when we arrived the vibe didn't seem to be as fun as we were hoping our last meal in NY would be. Super glad we left and stumbled into REDD! It is finally here and it is AMAZING! An incredible food experience here in Rochester that I already can't wait to get back and try again. We had 8pm reservations and cozied up in one of their gorgeous booth spaces. My date went with a Manhattan (lovely) and I ordered a delicious Dolcetto d'Alba by the glass, and it complimented every single thing I ate this fine evening. And we ate all the things! As for the food: if you do not order the Maine Lobster Risotto...I don't know what to say. You NEED to order the Maine Lobster Risotto! I thought I had eaten pretty delicious risotto in the past and just...no. This is the best. Dining companion and I totally pulled a Ron Swanson as we were eating it - "just give me all the Maine Lobster Risotto you have." Everything we ate was beyond, but this was, uhm, BEYOND beyond. Order this. $15. Take my money. We also went with the lettuce cups, which come with chicken and eggplant in a soy-based sauce with the perfect amount of kick. These were delish as well, and it is fun to go all in with your hands in a *fancy* restaurant. Next came the prosciutto pizza and the physical discomfort as we needed to finish every bite. Fresh and light prosciutto accompanied by a mess ton of arugula. Crust was perfectly charred and totally withstood the cheese, toppings, and oil without doing that sad pizza slice flop. I guess we got over our physical discomfort pretty QUICK as we went ahead and ordered the chocolate cake for dessert. This piece of "cake" is like a big hunk of fudge...but SOMEHOW still light and decadent and SHOCKER we ate all of that, too. This cake is dense as hell, more bitter than sweet, and topped with some balancing sea salt. This space is so beautiful, every person we encountered was basically the friendliest and most helpful person I've ever met, and the food is just nuts. Never mind the fact that we had a beautiful dinner for two (recap: two beverages, risotto, lettuce cups, pizza, cake) for $83 before tip. Redd is by far one of my favorite restaurants in Rochester. From its cocktails to his delicious meals, it hits the spot every time. This modern American restaurant not only boast a unique (ever changing) menu, but it also has a fabulous wine selection with a salmonella on site. As a wino, I appreciate this so much! As mentioned, their menu often changes with the season but some of my favorites include: Lobster Risotto appetizer, Glazed Pork Belly appetizer, the Cod main dish, and homemade ice cream dessert. The menu has been the same for years, but the quality has gone down. The dining area is like sitting inside of a dishwasher with the amount of silverware clanging together from the front of house staff non stop. I had to request to get a wine list, was not offered any insights into any of the wines, and had to pour it myself. I ordered the bolognese this time, which was not tossed, came already with cheese on it had far to much sauce with far too little flavor. Keep in mind, we only did appetizers and a pizza, but after trying them we had enough... -Lobster Risotto:meaty lobster, small portion in that large shallow plate, but VERY citrus forward... why? -Mushroom Pizza: delicious presentation, crispy crust, but VERY salty... why? -Onion rings: Just why? I don't recall this being a delicacy in Cali. Nonetheless, you're not missing out on skipping this. This place hit every note for us on our Friday Date night dinner. Off the beaten path (for a city), Amazing parking options, and quaint charm, and apparently a Michelin starred chef. Walking up to the front door was stunning as the outdoor area is just gorgeous, will surely try and eat on the patio before summer is over. We showed up about 30 min early and the friendly hostess was able to seat us right away. Ambiance is on point with a modern, slightly rustic and open feel. Scott was an exceptional waiter with ample knowledge and great suggestions on the menu. We had the pork belly, gnocchi, duck confit, and corn pizza and it was all delicious. The two cocktails were also very tasty and the glasses were so classy. Music was fantastic. Vibe was great. All what we look for to wind down after a hard work week and set us up for the weekend. My boyfriend and I went for our anniversary and got several drinks, appetizers, entrees, and desserts. The server even surprised us with a free "chefs special" appetizer. I have been to Redd 7 or 8 times for various reasons. Entertaining out of town guests, grabbing a drink after 8PM, celebratory dinner etc. So far the place has been remarkably consistent in that it has been good in every way. Always professional in food prep and service. Cocktails are quality, not fake, so is the food. The ambiance is cool with a good energy. Not too noisy nor dead. Redd has quickly become my new favorite Rochester restaurant. First off, the atmosphere is unique, clean, fresh, simplistic, but very modern and the indoor space is spacious. There is also a large gorgeous outdoor patio. The drinks and food were AMAZING. The tuna app doesn't look like much, but is so flavorful! Given the atmosphere, I'd expect a more experienced wait staff. Not to say they were bad, but I just expected more. The overall service was consistent and friendly. The Yumminess: Hmmm. Well. I guess I expected it taste better. It looked fantastic! Everything was cooked to perfection. I expected to have a "Ratatouille" moment. You know that scene! I closed my eyes in preparation and I did not have that moment. I wanted it to but it was missing something. A dash of salt? Some type of heat? More seasoning? I just do not know. Perhaps a combo of all three? It was sufficient. I was no longer hungry but I was far from satiated. I think they would benefit by offering some type of bread/cheese platter as an appetizer. All their starters seemed like meals. I'm sure the portions were small but one does not think of gnocchi as an appetizer usually. For dessert I had a single scoop of vanilla ice cream with chocolate cake and fudge or something mixed in. Sigh. Again. No moment. It's ice cream! All ice cream makes me close my eyes. This one was off. I think the cake or something was too dry. I don't know. I didn't finish the scoop. Check Please!: Price point was good. I got the halibut and scoop of ice cream for $39. Top notch from the first step in the door till the last one out. Friendly, engaging staff. Tough place to get into but lucky to get seats at the bar. Bar staff was great and excellent t at getting what people were looking for. I had a Fitzgerald that is sort of a refreshing gin based take on an old fashioned. First time trying this and was awesome. Started with some oysters. So good. Can't remember where they were from but light and fresh. Main course was Halibut done with romesco, artichoke confifit, grilled lemon, basil, snap pea, spinach, pine nut gremolata. Sounded delicious, looked delicious and was completely delicious to the last bite! The wood fired pizza looked amazing. This was the second time I've eaten at Redd and it will probably be the last. The food was so disappointing. I ordered the pork belly which was hard and not tender, almost impossible for pork belly if cooked correctly. The sauce had no balance and was overly sweet. My main dish was the special of Beef Stroganoff which was also mediocre. The meat was tough and should have been potted more for tenderness. The positives were that my dessert of pot de créame was good as was my cocktail. Service was also good. The positives simply do not outweigh the mediocre food, especially at the prices. read more

Enjoyed a delicious dinner 3/27/24 with a friend for my first experience at REDD. I had ordered a Cosno off the mocktail menu and enjoyed the NA take on a classic. My friend ordered the same shortly after and it took 20+ min to receive the mocktail. We started out with the tuna tartare and split the specialty wood fired pizza (which was to die for). Everything we ordered was spot on and with each bite I enjoyed everything a little bit more. The ambience was top notch and gave a sophisticated yet relaxed vibe. From drinks, to dinner, to dessert nothing was lacking except the service. Our server was very inattentive and left us waiting for the next step far too long. Had we been waited on better, we would have ordered more but we were approaching 3hrs at the restaurant. All in all, I would return but would be weary of coming during a time constraint. read more

Hands down, one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Definitely the best meal I have had in the last year or two. Jeff took care of us and made sure we understood both the wine and food menu well. He knows his wine, and made us feel very welcome. It was super busy - all the tables were spaced far enough apart, and the staff were all following the Covid guidelines to a tee. It was nice. We had the Pork Belly and Lobster Risotto for appetizers, and the Bolognese and Halibut for dinner (We shared everything). That Bolognese was so damn good. If somebody had to define the style or aesthetic of Redd in one word it would certainly be, to me, hipster. To me, that can be a signal that your dinner will be more fascinating virtue filled back story than actually enjoyable food but I'm glad to say the food went beyond my expectations and left nothing to be desired. The Rigatoni was a perfectly executed plate of fresh hot food that was somehow more savory and satisfying than I expected without trying too hard or including anything for the sake of just being different. My friend had the Coq Au Vin and enjoyed it very much. Our server was attentive and pleasant without going over the top. What more can be said from my 1 visit? The glazed pork belly was hands down the best I've ever had. Get it. We also had the mozzarella pizza, the freshness of the tomato sauce and basil made it. We enjoyed the halibut with risotto. YAS to everything here at Redd! We sat outside and felt nice and safe. And just wow. Blown away at the level of scrumptiousness of the food. Absolute bliss. The tuna tartare was a unique fresh delectable starter, loved the crispy rice sprinkled over the top. The smoked trout appetizer was smoky, with a creamy aioli, on crunchy bread. The chopped salad was nice and crisp with a vinaigrette dressing so light but flavorful. The scallops with cauliflower made you want to eat all your vegetables! Redd is a beautiful restaurant, clearly very popular in Rochester. As an out of town guest and a walk in, I appreciated the courteous staff who found me a table. Service was excellent. The menu was sophisticated and my food was very good except for the main dish - scallops - which was just ok. The scallops themselves weren't high quality - smallish, probably wet (versus dry) scallops and possibly thawed from frozen. They were cooked well (although salty) but the preparation couldn't quite make up for the ingredients. The other dishes and desserts that I ordered were outstanding. Everything we ordered was fantastic: the pork belly with apple slaw, tuna tartare with avocado, and halibut entree. However, a few items really stand out and would be my top recommendations: the smoked trout over crostini, pork belly buns, and seared scallops entree. I'm also not typically a dessert guy, but the chocolate chips cookies were great - thin, crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. Redd is one of the best upscale American restaurants in Rochester if not the best. The Chef, Richard Reddington, has put together an inspired menu in this downtown restaurant. Tucked behind the Little Theater, there is plenty of parking. In the good weather months, outdoor dining is available. You should reserve early if you want to request outdoor seating. The Spring Menu offerings are divided into Starters, Wood Fired and Mains. The "Spring" menu suggests that the menu varies with the seasons. The Starters were large enough to be shared by two. We had the Pork Belly and the Chopped Salad. The pork belly was cooked perfectly, a little crispy with a decadent glaze. The salad, perfectly seasoned. The Duck leg confit was served on a bed of "fried farro" with Enoki Mushrooms, shallots, and a pea puree. The skin of the duck was crispy, and the seasoning was excellent. The desserts were equally delicious. We shared a custard tart and a chocolate pate. We both liked the tart the best but ate every bite of the chocolate. Went to Redds for mom and dads 63rd anniversary and it was a real treat. Outdoor seating was very pleasant and our service was benchmark. Always there to refill water glasses, ask if we needed anything and even brought us a treat from the kitchen. As for the food, the presentation, seasoning and ingredients were all cooked to perfection. The portions were generous, enough to take some home. Very impressed and we will definitely be back. If you are coming to Redd planning to have an in depth conversation, please be aware that you will constantly find yourself losing track of the subject matter while continually being distracted by incredible flavor after flavor. When you enter Redd, you walk into a beautifully modern open space with a sophisticated and classy bar to the left and both tables and booths to your right. It's decorated with gastronomy books from across the world, which is translated directly into the menu filled with a variety of Asian, Italian, and American infused cuisine. The specialty pizzas are so uniquely delicious they are unlike any pizza you've tried before! The combination of toppings blended with the cheese and varied sauces and will make you savor every last piece (not to mention the pizza crust!). My personal favorite was the mushroom pizza but my friends argued for the brussel sprouts pizza and the prosciutto pizza! We also had the pleasure of trying the pork belly, tuna tartar, scallops, wings, and chicken Cesar salad. The pork belly is (and I reiterate other comments here) a MUST HAVE. So so melt in your mouth delicious. Shout out to the tuna tartar, scallops and wings as they were all also so good that you really can't go wrong. Finally, the atmosphere really brought the whole dining experience together. The restaurant owner and the General Manager even introduced themselves and asked how our food was in between also delivering food to a variety of tables which we thought was really cool! In conclusion, Redd definitely lives up to the reputation! Chef Reddington and his entire team have done a wonderful job of mixing elegance while exploring a variety of styles and tastes.
