Must try if you're in the area. Walked into a bright and welcoming dining experience. We were lucky enough to snatch two seats at the bar and the fellas behind the counter were amazing, the perfect amount of attentiveness to all their guests during a busy Friday afternoon rush. Thought we were being basic for getting the pizza but it was the perfect start, the dough was warm, soft, & crispy with soppresata in every bit. For our main dish, we shared the Wild Fluke & Clams and it was delicious! The fish was light and flaky with the right amount of sauce. All the flavors complimented each other really nicely. Somehow we'd missed trying REDD in the former 2 Vine space. On a beautiful fall evening, we decided to try their patio. Aside of being an absolutely gorgeous outdoor space, we had a spectacular meal. They have a nice assortment of Zero Proof cocktails, so we tried the Spicy Boy (still a bit spicier than expected) and Norma Jean (perfect). We shared the Panzanella Salad and Smoked Trout starters. The salad was amazing with the perfect dressing and a nice assortment of fresh tomatoes. The smoked trout was thoughtful and a lovely bite. To be honest, we had a tough time narrowing the starters down because everything looked so wonderful. For entrees, we also mixed it up ordering the Maine Lobster Risotto starter for an entree and also the Bouillabaisse. Both were absolutely outstanding. Our one very minor quibble was that the broth on the bouillabaisse was so spectacular, we wished that they provided either more toasts or some fresh bread to continue enjoying the broth. We were sad to leave some behind on the plate. In all, this is a wonderful high end Rochester restaurant that we're sorry took us so long to try. There are many things we wanted to try but were conscious of ordering too much. We'll definitely be back to rectify that. read more

When someone asks "where to eat in Rochester," Redd is 9 times out of 10 one of the places mentioned, so I had to check it out. With "classy" attired, my husband and I had a spontaneous Friday night dinner at Redd. We made reservations about 30minutes before and were seated on the lovely patio outside on a cool upstate NY summer night. We had Calvin as our server and while I was already in a good mood for a fancy night out, his warm, colorful, and impressively detailed sharing of the daily specials put me in an even happier mood. Everything sounded tasty and so we went a little crazy, getting 3 starters (glazed pork belly, lobster risotto, gnocchi), and 2 mains (seared scallops and halibut) for two people. Worth it. Although Rochester is near a body of water, we often miss ocean seafood (sorry trout!). And we also hadn't eaten out in a while, so I couldn't choose and decided on getting everything that caught my attention. Of the starters we got, the glazed pork belly was the star - crispy, fatty, so tasty. The gnocchi came next with the tasty savory sausage. The lobster risotto was tasty too, but I think in my mind I was expecting orzo instead of risotto (my bad!) so my expectations were a bit smothered. As for our mains, the seared scallops were (surprisingly) well cooked - near raw in the middle and crispy on the outside. I say surprisingly not to downplay the restaurant, but more so to emphasize how difficult it is to sear scallops well to have the balance of not overcooked but also crispy. The halibut was also very tasty. For drinks we had a Champagne Papi with indigo gin (fancy!), and a bartender's choice drink with a bourbon base. We got a modified "Last Word" and went down a fun rabbit hole of exploring the history and variations of the cocktail. With 3 starters we'll have to make another round to comment on dessert, but definitely a fancy night out in little ole' Rochester. read more

First time here tonight for a birthday dinner and I was over the top impressed. Having worked in the service industry for half my life, I will say I've never seen the level of service I saw tonight anywhere in Rochester. From the server assistants, to the bartender, the host and our server, Jess, it was great. We all shared appetizers and dishes family style, which was great as we got to try half the menu! I love Redd! This restaurant is top notch! I have an amazing every time I come. The food is amazing and the service is more than perfect! I had the pleasure of sitting at the bar the last time I dined in and I watched the staff work sooo hard to make sure that everything was presentable and that the guest had exactly what they asked for. They even gave us hot moist towels to wipe our hands after we had our wings. The ambiance is dimmed and relaxing. It is a nice place to unwind after a long work week. The bartenders did an amazing job with the cocktails, I tried a variety of them... all of which were delicious. Needless to say, my bf and I really enjoy our time each time we are here. Had a wonderful birthday dinner for our first time at Redd. We were surprised with Thai chili glazed chicken wings complimentary which was a nice surprise! They were crispy, sticky, sweet and spicy which made for a perfect bite. In addition to the wings we ordered the tuna tartare. If tuna tartare is on the menu, I'm getting it! It was very fresh and flavorful. As for entrees we ordered the bee sting pizza and scallops. We were in heaven with every bite. The bee sting pizza had a nice crisp and the chili oil had the perfect amount of heat. The scallops were cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. To complete the meal we were also given a plate of chocolate chip cookies. All in all we had a great experience and will definitely return. My husband has been eager to try Redd for awhile and we finally made our reservations for New Year's weekend. Quick rundown, the shining star of the evening was easily the lobster risotto and this should remain a staple on the menu indefinitely. I had two drinks and my husband had two drinks. The spicy margarita was spicy, like lots of pepper in the actual drink. It will warm you up. The Holly McClane was our server's favorite and personal recommendation. It was okay. The wood fired pizza was wood fired pizza and nothing to write home about. Our main entrees, though much anticipated both fell short of our high expectations. The eggplant dish is the only vegetarian (maybe vegan?) option on the menu. You need to really enjoy curry to enjoy this dish. Why was there only one thin slice of eggplant? My husband's entree was the NY strip. He said it was just okay and can recount other local restaurants that offer a better steak. The server was nice. The atmosphere was cool, but maybe a bit open for our liking. We could lock eyes with the tables adjacent to us and did at one point. We saw several families dining on a Saturday evening. The manager was very kind, greeted us and inquired about our visit. Upon returning, we would probably skip cocktails and I'd have the lobster risotto as an entree. Overall good dining experience. Reddd had an excellent ambience when we visited and we were imperially greeted by an impeccable hostess followed by our waiter as well as waiter in training. It was my father's birthday and they offered us several items including the chicken wings and the cookies as compliments of the chef. My entree was impeccable. I had the chef special, the pad thai, and I can safety say that was the best Pad Thai I have had in a very long time. For desert we had the cheese cake and the crambulle, and although I am not a desert person the desserts were both excellent and tasted divine. I can't wait to come back soon. read more

Main takeaway with review of dishes to follow: In my opinion you can find better upscale food in Rochester for a price that matches the flavor. At Redd I believe you're paying mostly for ambience-- to be amongst a "fancier" crowd of Rochesterians and to have the staff perform the rituals and etiquette of a "fancy" restaurant. I had high expectations after hearing so much about Redd. But it was truly pretty mediocre for how expensive it is. I had the lobster risotto to start, and it was good but kind of lemony and not very flavorful. The arancini appetizer special was really good, probably the best thing we got, but isn't on the regular menu. I got the bouillabaisse dish for my main and it was disappointing. The mussels tasted off, very fishy and strange. I usually love mussels. My partner got the scallops and he said they were pretty good but the cauliflower/raisin/almond mash under them was not very good. read more

There were 7 of us for dinner on a Friday night. We started with some drinks and appetizers. The waitress took time to explain everything to us. We picked a bunch of apps. I went to REDD on Saturday night, located by the Little Theater in the old spot where 2Vine was. They have had their summer menu out for a few weeks, and we made our reservation three weeks in advance. They book out pretty far ahead. We ordered glasses of the Eschol Cabernet Blend ($18). It was very smooth, and the pours were generous. They had a specials menu but we stuck to their normal offerings. We had the gnocchi cacio e pepe and pork belly for starters. The gnocchi had a slight kick. The pork belly was delicious and had great texture. For the mains we ordered the caramelized scallops and the rigatoni bolognese. The scallops dish was very balanced flavor wise and texturally. The cauliflower bits with the capers and raisins made each bite well rounded, and all the elements of the dish complemented one another without being overpowering. It was a light and refreshing entrée. The rigatoni, however, felt short. It was extremely salty. The people next to us complained of another dish being too salty as well. We didn't say anything to the staff, but maybe the staff was heavy handed with seasoning last night. The noodles were hand made but the texture was off. I would order something different next time. For four glasses of wine, two small plates, and two entrées our bill came to $189, which is pricey but not unreasonable for the type of establishment. read more

Though not stuffy or fancy in an exclusionary way, Redd is a legitimate fine dining experience from the service, to the ambiance, to the food. The menu itself could have been better and I look forward to returning when it changes and livens up a bit. But almost everything we had was excellent, and we sampled most of the small plates. Redd has become my new favorite restaurant in town. Their food is consistently good. I've visited a handful of times and each visit has resulted in a great meal. This includes the 2 times we ordered take-out during the pandemic. Items that I've ordered repeatedly include: tuna tartare w/ avocado and their chicken wings. Both are amazing to share with 2 or 3 people. As for their mains, I really like their vegetarian ravioli, one of the best pastas I've ever had (vegetarian or not). My fiancée loves their halibut with tomatillo sauce. Their scallops are great, although portion-wise, I always feel like scallops are too small to be a main. Their peau de creme dessert is also to die for. Service has always been on-point and their wine selection fantastic. I came here last Thursday with Ms. Garibaldi. What a shame. My strip was tough. Served with onion rings? Would have gone to burger king. It took 3 hours from the time we walked in to get our food (on a Thursday). The strip comes pre-cut. Mine had 3 ends (something doesn't add up). Absolutely amazing! This is the 4th or 5th time I've eaten at Redd and every time I'm so impressed! We were promptly seated and our server was very attentive and patient while we waited for the 4th in our party to join us. Drinks were tasty and innovative. The food was incredible. We got the bee sting pizza (can't miss!) and wings. The wings were saucy but still had a good crisp and not dry at all. We then got the steak that was cooked perfectly med rare, scallops, bouillabaisse and wild fluke with curry, jasmine rice, mussels and clams. Everything was great. They apologized because the bouillabaisse was taking longer than expected, even though it only arrived about 3 minutes after our other entrées. They gave us chocolate chip cookies at the end of our meal, as a thank you for being patient. And then they ended up, taking the bouillabaisse completely off the bill! This was top-notch service. The menu has been the same for years, but the quality has gone down. The dining area is like sitting inside of a dishwasher with the amount of silverware clanging together from the front of house staff non stop. I had to request to get a wine list, was not offered any insights into any of the wines, and had to pour it myself. I ordered the bolognese this time, which was not tossed, came already with cheese on it had far to much sauce with far too little flavor. We got there and the place was booked but fortunately there were 2 seats left at the bar that they kindly directed us to. The bartenders were a riot.. served us within minutes and made some pretty damn good drinks for my boyfriend and poured a fat glass of wine for me while answering every question we had and laughing at our vulgar jokes. Stopped in for a weeknight dinner. The restaurant is nice, contemporary and comfy. Lots of rich tradition of Redd, his local roots, his mother, and his style/influence in the menu offerings. What a local gem. We ordered a tasting of starters among the three of us, and were very satisfied. Brussels salad: very good shaved Brussels, perfectly poached egg on top, and frisée. All very shareable and delicious. The bacon, croutons and vinegarette were all a nice combo. Priced at $14. Lobster Risotto: I was scared of the truffle oil, which is usually the kiss of death for a dish, but they pulled it off. It was creamy, had a few nice hunks of lob meat, and everything went together nicely. Not my favorite, but very good. Priced at $19. Pork belly: rendered nicely, I would have personally liked it more crispy. It was over seasoned with sweet and salty. It was a rather large portion for the starter category, priced at $15. Octopus: the chips were really good, I could have made a meal of them. The potatoes were good too, as was the dressing they were tossed in. Octo was tender inside and crisp on the outside. Sunchokes: these were ALMOST PERFECT, the root of the choke. Sliced nicely, cooked perfectly, but completely under seasoned. A touch of salt would have made a tremendous difference. The front house was very pleasant, and knew the menu cold. They could use a little help in being more attentive and anticipating customer needs (drinks, plates, when trying to leave and pay, grabbing checked items, etc.). I watched our wonderful server walk past our table on several occasions without a glance of eye contact to our party to see if we needed anything. Maybe we were double sat? REDD is one of few establishments that will serve me my drink of choice...black cherry old fashion. I have been to Redd 7 or 8 times for various reasons. Entertaining out of town guests, grabbing a drink after 8PM, celebratory dinner etc. So far the place has been remarkably consistent in that it has been good in every way. Always professional in food prep and service. Cocktails are quality, not fake, so is the food. The ambiance is cool with a good energy. Not too noisy nor dead. I am pleasantly surprised with my experience in this fine establishment. I wouldn't be shocked if "REDD" stood for reliably executing dashing deliciousness. I can tell that this place is managed with pride. The inside of the restaurant was elegant. My group and I walk in and we are greeted with a huge smile, our coats were checked in and we were immediately directed to our booth. We had two wonderful waiters and were both very professional and cared for our comfort and satisfaction. We started with fresh bottled water and cocktails. Service was extremely efficient, so my drink " how to disappear completely", was delivered in a glass bottle full of wood smoke and was poured in an old fashion cup garnished with an orange peel. I can smell the citrus vapor from the release of the peel oil. This cocktail was well balanced, and this is the theme in this restaurant. Everything was consistently well balanced. My group and I ordered 3 starters and 4 main meals. For starters the tuna tartar was fresh and decorous. The mixed elements of crispy fried rice, the delicate crunch of the asian pear, and the tender tuna took this dish to a level I never experienced. The squash ravioli was presented with multiple ways to enjoy squash. First you get creamy squash inside a perfectly crafted ravioli. Next, you have evenly cubed squash cooked to the point where you have the perfect resistance while chewing instead of being mushy. Then you have caramelized yellow squash giving the dish a happy color and the right amount of sweetness. Last you get the crunch from the buttery hazelnut- just beautiful. After that we have the lobster risotto. This dish was light and buttery. The lobster was done perfectly. Unexpectedly, we were treated by the chef with more of his heart and soul. We were surprised to receive four dishes to try on the house, three of which are not even on the menu yet. For average joes, we sure felt special. First, we got the cheesy buttery shrimp and grits (off menu). I am not a fan of grits at all, but oh my, I fell in love with this artwork. There were crunchy bits all over that gave this hearty dish a crunch. Even with the cheese consistency of a grilled cheese sandwich, it was light on the palette- super dish! Then we were greeted with delicious, crispy, tender, glossy chicken wings (In the menu). Even with a simple dish like this, the talent in the kitchen elevated those wings to new heights. I felt I was on cloud 9. Amazing how one has the skill to get a chicken wing crispy on the outside and maintain the protein juicy and tender on the inside. It gets more impressive when the restaurant manager casually walks to our table with the chefs fish and chips (off menu). As if I wasn't impressed with the skills shown with the wings, this fish was on point. The batter was golden and crispy while the fish was flaky and tender. The fries were tossed with salt and herb and not overpowering. TLC did not fall short on the fries by the way. Every single fry was crispy as a pringle on the outside and soft as baked potato on the inside- no clue how, perfection. At this point we thought the generosity curtain was closing, but no, we were wrong. The chef also blessed us with Holy lentil ( off menu and I added holy). This lentil had a subtle smoky flavor, buttery lentil and crispy prosciutto for a crunch- Yum! OKEY, feel free to take a break, I didn't even get to the main dishes we ordered yet. We welcomed the main dishes like homecoming. One out of the four dishes was the NY strip steak. The presentation was beautiful. The steak was perfectly cooked medium rare, and seared to perfection obtaining that satisfying crust on the edge. Most importantly, it was juicy and tender. The caramelized onion sauce and crispy kale was such a compliment to the dish. The mushroom added a bonus umph to it as well. Next, I wouldn't underestimate the grilled chicken here. This plate was full of bold colors and the flavors followed suit in their own ways. The chicken thigh was juicy and the shallot- balsamic jus paired nicely on my palette as I was dancing with the stars. The herb potato puree was so light and airy . Last but not least the Halibut. People! This dish made me tear up a little from authentic tasteful joy. The fish was cooked with love and passion like Jon Favreau from the movie chef. I mean, it was seared enough to have a crispy crust and a juicy, flaky fish. The Crispy sage and prosciutto just boost this dish to other dimensions. This dish did not cease to impress. The butter squash island surrounded by lobster butter was paradise, and such a great place to dip the crispy fries from earlier. FYI, the fourth dish was another order of the halibut dish. What's impressive is that the dish was literally identical in texture, taste and presentation which proves consistency in every dish.
