My favorite BBQ place in the Boston area, and best I have had outside of Texas! I grew up in the Midwest and love good BBQ. I was introduced to Redbones through someone at work who has family in Texas. I have so many good memories of meals at Redbones BBQ with friends and family. When you live in an apartment in the city and can not BBQ yourself, this is the best you can get! The sandwiches are good for a quick meal, but definitely recommend the dinner plates. Try their ribs or brisket. The meat is so tender and flavorful. Last time I visited at like 11pm and got the BBQ Belt, which is a pile of all kinds of bbq meats with some sides (check out the picture). It will probably increase that belt line a bit lol. If you eat at the restaurant it is very casual and slightly dirty, but just comfortable. The murals create a fun atmosphere and great service helps get people through during busy peak times. Worst experience in a long time for a place I used to love. High prices and tiny portions served cold in a box with plastic silverware at the table. Didn't know if the bartender worked here or not because he was just hanging around. The young person who was working the take out was very friendly. Music was way too loud. Now to the food. St Louis ribs had way too much rub on them and was burnt You could not taste the pork. The baby backs only come pre-sauced. And again you could not taste the pork. Collard greens were flavorless. Has lived near Redbones location my entire life and eaten there as long as its been in Davis. Love the space, the staff, and esp the food. As legit BBQ as you will get above the Mason Dixon. The pandemic threw the world for a loop and Redbones was along for the ride. In the past year we likely ordered takeout 15 times and each time something was wrong with the order. Missing items, sandwiches with no toppings, etc. Have never been the type to send things back (esp delivery or pick up), and tearing through a to go bag irritates me as a spectator in any space. The food was lukewarm and I wasn't near a microwave so that was a little annoying. It made me think the food had been sitting out for a while before being served. One of the worst meals I have had in a long time. The pulled pork was okay, but I am from Memphis, TN so I am very picky about that. Everything else was abysmal. The fried pickles tasted of nothing but a TON of salt. The pecan pie tasted like it came from a supermarket freezer and the banana pudding was a little banana, maybe two vanilla wafers, but was 90% Cool Whip Topping™. Making whip cream is one of the easiest things in the world! The worst was the biscuits. I know how to make a good biscuit but I didn't feel like cooking and The Porch (which is fantastic!) was closed. Hand to heart, the biscuits were Pilsbury canned biscuits, and not even Pilsbury Grands™! If you want to eat Southern food, wait until the Porch is open. Had a great time! Cool music, our server was super attentive, and the food was just what classic BBQ should be. We had corn bread, St. Louis style ribs- which had a nice rub, and were great dipped in their homemade hot sauce and sweet sauce. Also got the hot chicken, which had a complex, spiced, flavor. I got the sauce on the side, since our server said it was "ghost pepper hot." I preferred dipping it in the homemade sauces though. For sides, the stand-out was the potato salad. I hadn't been to Redbones in a long time. Probably 2-3 years. I used to go all the time. So it was nice to be back. Had the pulled pork sandwich platter and a Stone IPA. Chose the cole slaw and the bar-b-q baked beans. Sat at the bar. I have to say it was one of the better meals I have had there. The cole slaw was really fresh. The baked beans were good, not great. The generous helping of pork was much appreciated, and I ate it with an assortment of sauces. The key with this place is to go with an open mind. It's pretty divey, but in a really good way. Lots of great art and decorations. It even has one of Tyler Hamilton's jerseys from when he was on Team CSC. So if you're a cyclist, you'll get a dose of cycling memorabilia. I think they do beef brisket very well. And the pulled chicken is excellent. Can't remember about the ribs. It isn't the best bar-b-q you've ever had, but it's pretty good. Hush puppies are average. I probably would have opted for something else. The sides were unremarkable: the mashed potatoes and gravy were just okay, the fried okra was pretty flavorless, yet the biscuit was the most delicious thing on the plate. Wanting to try one of their desserts, I ordered the chocolate cake with whipped cream, which was extraordinarily dry and only saved by fresh whipped cream. I scraped the pasty chocolate icing off. This was my first time at Redbones. When I walked in, the first word that came to mind is "no frills": handwritten beer menu, checkered tablecloths thrown over tightly packed tables, an open kitchen with loud cooking sounds etc. I ordered the Dinner Special which, for $14.95, came with a choice of meat (I chose baby back ribs), two sides (I got mac & cheese and mash potatoes), and cornbread. I'm not a BBQ expert but in my opinion, the ribs were delicious. A great portion for the price, juicy, and just the right amount of sweet and tangy. The mash potatoes were also phenomenal. I can tell they used a sh*t ton of butter. The mac & cheese was just OK. As others have mentioned, it had a fake cheese vibe going on. The cornbread was a nice touch to round things off - both fluffy and sweet. My boyfriend got the pulled pork and fried chicken combo. I thought both were great. The pork was juicy and the chicken was both juicy on the inside and fluffy/crunchy on the outside. While not exactly cheap, the prices don't make me want to cry like they do when I go to Sweet Cheeks. We will be back. read more

BBQ is not what I had in mind for my Friday night, but after some convincing, I gave Redbones a try. Though there was a bit of a line outside, we were seated in the lower level. The lower seating is not what I expected from the fluorescent lit upstairs. The downstairs is darker with some pretty unique art pieces along the walls. It was comfortable and we had a pretty spacious table, but the walkways are a bit tight (maybe tighter after you've been stuffed with BBQ). I have to start with a disclaimer. I didn't actually get BBQ. As previously stated, I wasn't expecting to eat BBQ. I was wearing a brand new white sweater and anything saucy seemed like playing with fire. I ended up with chicken & waffles, which in no way is settling because it was absolutely delicious. The chicken was crispy without being greasy. The waffles were buttery and soft. I'm not a big gravy person but their gravy with the waffles is the combination I never knew I needed. I also tried (sampled by stealing) the mac & cheese and biscuits with jam. The mac & cheese was creamy, cheesy, and worth all the glares from stealing. The biscuit not so much. I found the biscuit a little to dry for my liking. Even the jam couldn't save it for me. The drinks were a little overpriced, especially proportional to the pretty low cost of food. Half the cost of our bill was a mostly peach slice peach sangria and pretty average hard cider. I will likely go back to Redbone. If only to form an opinion of the actual BBQ at Redbone BBQ. read more

Lot of Pros and Cons here. But overall I enjoyed it. This is one of those weird ones where all the good stuff is REALLY GOOD and all the bad stuff is like "Damn guys, really?" ... with that lets do all the good stuff first. Pros: Ribs. They offer the 3 different styles of ribs, which is incredible. St. Louis, Baby Back, and Texas Beef. Gotta go with the St. Louis though. Sauce came on the side and not smother all over the top so Thank YOU! The Rub was so subtle yet good and mixed with the soft char so well. And mixed between the meat flavor and the smoky flavor along with the Rub was almost perfection! Nothing overpowered the other. And the meat easily came off the bone. Excellent Job. Brisket was THICK Cut, none of this little deli meat slices. Super moist and great Brisket flavor, again nothing overpowering about the spices if there was any I couldn't really tell. Still that traditional toughness to a Brisket but not tough enough to really work through, just soft enough. BBQ Baked Beans were Incredible! Not the best I've ever had but I've tried A LOT! These guys are easily in my Top 10. Had a nice fruity BBQ taste to them, perfectly cooked beans, little tiny chunks and strips of pulled pork, zingy spices that mixed beautifully with the sweetness. BBQ Hash! Where has this stuff been my whole life. This is Pulled Pork with what I'm assuming cubed up yellow potatoes, maybe yukons, and Bell Peppers mixed in a sweet-BBQ-teriyaki-citusy-slow cooker-style sauce (Idk what is actually in the sauce, just that's what I was tasting). It was SO GOOD! I kind of liked the Dirty Rice, it's vegetarian though. Kind of looked like plain boring brown rice at first but the spices they mixed in was quite nice and subtle enough for this to be a small little side dish. Sweet tea was VERY authentic. Cloudy! Haven't had the cloudy stuff since back in the day. Couldn't even see the Lemon they snuck in there. Probably not as "Sweet" as most people would assume, it's definitely more of a summer tea vibe with a hint of sweetness. And Cons: Well I know it's Covid and all, but No utensils for take out customers? Especially during Lunch hours? Come on, guys. Mac and Cheese? The stuff was a step away from being Kraft. I mean I'll eat it but Damn! Just that generic cheese sauce in some macaroni noodles? All these other places are making a nice 3-4-5 cheese blend and baking it all with some bread crumbs or whatever. Corn Bread, very generic store bought mix tasting. Might actually be just that, not enjoyable for me. And lastly, the sauce. I know that most people up here know a BBQ to be thick and molasses like. Really BBQ sauce is supposed to be a bit more on the liquid side with a strong vinegar base, even when it's not a Carolina style. But my issue with Red Bones' Sauce is that I have never ever ever seen a sauce as Thick as their's. This was practically Pudding! Wasn't even that good. Luckily for them there was nothing that needed sauce but I can't get over how dense it was, just think like bottom of the bottle ketchup. But I give em 4 Stars because the Good Stuff is THAT GOOD! They definetly have people who know what they are doing back there, just wish that same passion and effort could go into All their menu. read more

I had only ever experienced Redbones through catering (mostly pulled pork and mashes potatoes) so I wasn't sure what the big deal was. However, when I finally made my way to the actual restaurant, it was so much better! The vibe is punk-rock, the music is 90s/early 2000s, and the service is odd. I really enjoyed the texan ribs (not goopy or lathered in sauce) and interestingly enough, the salmon (delish smoked/charred flavor). As for sides, the best were the roasted veggies and corn bread. So, this used to be my favorite restaurant ever! I got happy like a child on my way there, in the past. Well, covid has completely changed this place. I know that they were open for curbside pickup during the pandemic and had a limited menu but are now open for dine in and they have eliminated my favorite corn fritters, stating, get this, "too expensive and supply and demand issues". Look at the recipe. That's crazy but ok, I'll live. There's no longer a children's menu so my 10 year old had a $16.99 tiny burned, well done piece of meat with fries. NO MORE KETCHUP. They said the owner won't allow it in his restaurant!!! That's absolutely absurd. The meals come in environmentally friends to go containers. They now cater to the to go and delivery group but those meals sat on a few shelves for quite some time so not sure that food will be even room temperature by the time the poor customers get it. I guess they eliminated dishes, besides glasses. And, last but not least, they were out of most of the deserts and they have eliminated most of those as well. I ordered some sides and a beer to start. Everything is now served in small and cheap to-go plastic containers or paper containers and plastic utensils EVEN IF YOU ARE EATING IN. The waiter placed my food in front of me: my collard greens in a closed little plastic container, biscuits wrapped in tin foil and peach jam in another smaller plastic container, plastic utensils in a little sealed plastic bag, and an unopened can of beer sitting inside a glass (which is, honestly, unsanitary). I was shocked. "Oh, it's not to go," I said. "I'm eating here." But the waiter responded: "we don't serve in plates here." WTF??? SINCE WHEN??? It was THE saddest experience. The place is spread across the main dining area and bar. I had the jerk chicken with dirty rice and beans. The jerl chicken comes with rice and coleslaw. I swapped coleslaw with dirty rice, they charge extra for that. First of all my chicken didn't taste like jerk chicken and the portion of the food was small.
