Just returned, finally, post-pandemic. We loved it again! The barbecue was outstanding; we, loved the atmosphere on the lower level. The man who brought the food was friendly and professional and the beer was great. We didn't sit at the bar but the people at the bar seemed to be having fun. I've been a Redbones fan for more than 25 years, so I excited to visit while back in town for the weekend. This visit was pretty disappointing. My wife and I ate in on a Sunday lunchtime. The place was fairly empty. We were given plastic silverware and our meal came in takeout boxes. I've been here years ago for their key lime pie and it was the best key lime pie I've ever had. It is unfortunate to say they don't have that any more! I wish they would bring it back. This time around, we came for the bbq and I got the ribs and brisket plate and I was so disappointed. The food was dry... beyond dry. The ribs were a spice rubbed rib so I could understand it being a bit dry but it wasn't exactly tender either. The meat wasn't fall off the bone and using the bbq sauces they provide didn't help as much as I hoped. The sauce added some flavor but it did not help with the dryness. The brisket was terrible. Looks like Redbones used to be a great spot back in the day. Clearly, things have changed based on the recent reviews. Should have read the reviews before ordering last night.... I ordered Chicken Wings, and a 1/2 rack of Ribs with fries & collard greens. Chicken wings were TINY. There was more bone than meat. Ribs, lukewarm, and looked like it was re-heated from the day prior. Another day or two, and it would have been jerky! Fries, soggy (from the oil). Collard greens, but watery. Overall, the flavor was sub par, the food was probably microwaved, and would definitely not order here again. read more

I used to go to Redbones almost once a week. I used to compare every fried pickle to Redbones fried pickles. I returned to Redbones recently, for the first time since they reopened post covid. The fried pickles have a thick layer of breading, are not the same, and are not good. The BBQ sandwiches are no longer served with slaw and pickles on them. The plates are takeout containers, offered with plastic utensils. All the employees looked unhappy. I understand saving money to have the business bounce back after covid, but everything was cut too far and Redbones is now relying on its name and reputation, not the current state. Good bbq. I got into Boston late and walked around the corner from my rental and ordered some bbq. I ordered the bbq belt since I wanted try it all. The brisket was excellent, juicy and tasty. The baby back ribs and St. Louis were also very good. I really didn't like the beef rib it didn't have such a good flavor, the sausage on the other hand was the hidden gem with tons of flavor. Redbones commits what I think is often a crime. They are trying to do too many things at once... This is especially silly when it comes to BBQ. That being said, their BBQ is 'inoffensive', and I mean that in the best possible way. All of what I've had there is a decent version of what it is supposed to be. They have a great beer selection, and their fried foods are quite good. The highlights there are the fried okra (it's fresh okra), and fried pickles. To be specific, fried pickle slices. This is not gross, watery fried pickle spears. I tend to haunt the downstairs area, as it is usually feasible to grab a couple of bar seats. Tim is one of the better bar tenders. Down side, if you want to study downstairs with some beers and need the internet, they dont want to share their wifi. read more

Finally made my rounds at this place. My friend and I went on a Saturday afternoon. This place is so authentic and really felt like a good BBQ joint. This place has been running for 30 years and I love all the vintage images posted around. There are 3 portions of this restaurant. There's the dining area, the bar area, and the downstairs lounge area. They also have nights where they play blues music on certain nights. My friend and I shared the Barbecue Belt and the Fried Chicken Dinner. The Barbecue Belt consists of: 2 St. Louis ribs, 1 Texas style ribs, 2 baby back ribs, beef brisket, and 1 sausage. My favorite from the belt was the St. Louis ribs because it didn't even need sauce. With the Barbecue Belt came with 2 sides and we got collard greens and mac and cheese. Both sides were great. Fried Chicken Dinner came with 2 pieces of fried chicken, boneless, mashed potatoes, fried okra, 2 biscuits, butter and peach jam. Everything on this plate was absolutely amazing. We also got their beignets. It comes fresh in a white paper bag with 4 small ones and it is SO GOOD. The service was very good and the food came out reaaaallly quick. My only comment is that sometimes the meat itself is quite dry (as if it's just been sitting there for a while and drying out). Portions are nice and generous and sauces are delicious. I was a huge fan of the fried okra bites (which paired nicely with the ranch) because they were tender, crunchy, and perfectly fried!! I absolutely loved their mashed potatoes as well! How did they manage to make it so fragrant and buttery?!?! I was bamboozled. The fried chicken pieces were just okay- I think they lacked flavor. The outside was crispy and delicious but the inside was bland and a little dry. We also ordered a side of brisket and we loved it SO much!! It was so tender?! flavorful?! and amazing?? Would 10/10 get it again. Definitely utilize the sauces they have at the table! I enjoyed dipping the brisket in the sweet sauce and the spicy sauce. The service was attentive despite the bustle. As a born-and-raised Southerner, I have high standards for anything claiming to be BBQ. I moved to the Boston area for college, and I've dedicated many meals trying to find a decent replica of the cuisine I grew up eating. Redbones didn't disappoint. I went with a group of friends (seven of us in total). Luckily, we made reservations and were seated immediately. I'd highly recommend calling ahead if you have a larger party. We were seated downstairs, which has a really fun, funky atmosphere. Our waitress was really pleasant, and the service was quick. We shared some cornbread for an appetizer. It's your standard, run-of-the-mill cornbread. Nothing about it stands out, but in my opinion, that's the way cornbread should be. I ordered the pulled chicken sandwich with a side of mac and cheese and biscuits. The chicken is a little sweet and mustard-y. It's just the right balance between saucy and dry. The mac and cheese is really thick and creamy (and a little reminiscent of Velveeta.) As a self-proclaimed biscuit connoisseur, I was underwhelmed by the biscuits. They were a little too dry and bland. The only redeeming factor was the peach jam, a true gem. A friend ordered the ribs and gives them a mixed review. They are dry, so if you like your ribs saucy, she'd recommend something else. However, the quality of the meat was good. The side of swiss chard wasn't anything to write home about, but the roasted veggies are phenomenal. The food is a little on the pricer end, but the serving sizes are more than generous and make up for it. If you're looking for good barbecue in the Somerville area, Redbones is the spot. I have regretfully have made a decision that I will never come back to this place ever again. I have been going to Red Bones for such a long time(Pre-Pandemic) and I have ordered a couple of times maybe (Post-Pandemic). I had just found out that the inside dining room had finally been open again and could not wait to go back....Boy was that such a let down. The Hosts( Poor excuse of ones) were just sitting at the host stand in the corner behind two tables (One younger girl wearing a New York baggy hoodie, and the other was a younger dude wearing headphones on his head leaning back in the chair on his phone). They finally after a few awkward stares at us decided to give us the eyes of "can I help you?" but never verbally greeted us, and once I said "Could I get a spot for 3 please?", the young guy just careless pointed at a seat in the corner. ok strike one dude.... we were sitting down and not a single instruction on what to do or anything. after about 10 minutes maybe? we finally got the young guy to come over to us, give us the look for us to order (again no words really just a glare) and when we order he just gave this careless kind of way to himself and walked away, STRIKE TWO BABY. Another party next to us sat down happy to be back just like us and had the SAME REACTION to the service as us throughout the place, including the confused look as to why everyone had to go containers and plastic cutlery, which might I add is their standard...no more plates or actual silverware. when we finally got our food it was still pretty decent from what I remembered but the portions were terribly smaller and the Sweet Tea was just Iced Tea. Pork slab is perfect, not fatty and it is not too smokey, nor drenched in burnt sauce. They have a nice selection of sauces to dip on the side. The sides are pretty standard and nothing special. However, this place is all about the meat. They've branched out beyond company lunches and holiday parties... they've a couple of food kiosks at Harvard Stadium on game day. No one likes a keyboard warrior, so for the record I called the business, offered to bring back the bad food in exchange for a new dinner prior to this. We received hard brisket that we couldn't pierce with a fork. For anyone that has ever had Redbones, that is not their typical brisket. We also ordered the St. Louis ribs, which look exceptional. My issue is with Redbones' customer service and their unwillingness to take accountability for poor food quality. The individual on the line was perhaps trying to be helpful, explaining she was texting her boss to find out what to do. The boss' solution was to tell me to take it up with UberEats, since I paid them for food. I paid UberEats to deliver food that Redbones prepared and, as we learned, doesn't stand behind. For the record, we've always had excellent food from Redbones which I also reiterated to the person I spoke with. I was still advised to "call Uber". I understand that Uber charges restaurants fees, but restaurants also agree to those business terms in exchange for volume. For my last night back in my hometown I just had to see my friend from high school and her fiancée. Before heading over to see a movie I recommended that we go to RedBones. You see living in Los Angeles I've had some pretty awful BBQ. I had remembered how much I loved the BBQ in highschool and how it use to be packed from wall to wall with BBQ addicts. It was a rainy and slushing evening and we were on somewhat of a crunch because of our movie time. We arrived and had no reservation. We were seated I would say within 2-3 mins. There weren't many people in the restaurant however, I wouldn't call it empty if that makes sense. Drink orders were taking and we all decided to get alcoholic beverages especially because the prices were fairly affordable for cocktails. I was impressed to see they had a full bar menu and some creative libations. I got the special manhattan. The menu can be a little intimidating at first but just remember dinner special has about a quarter of meat included (example: 1/4 ribs, 1/4 brisket etc...) this is enough for someone who just wants an individual meal and only wants one meat. We ordered the following Brisket Dinner and added 1/4 baby backs for an additional cost. For sides Pinto beans and mac & cheese. Pulled pork dinner with mac & cheese and collard greens for sides. I chose the Barbecue Belt! Which is a large portion of beef and pork ribs, sausage, brisket and sides mac and cheese & collard greens. The meat is was all very flavorful and cooked extremely well. The two sauces on the table sweet BBQ and Hot BBQ are very good. The Hot has a sharp bite that sneaks up on you. I ended up mixing them together with a little bit more of the Hot and it was the perfect BBQ sauce for me. Everyone enjoyed there food and it made amazing left overs the next day. No problems getting the food packed up and we got extra BBQ sauce to take with us. I think it was worth it. Why I don't give it 5 stars: Collard greens were cooked to the right consistency but they were kind of bland and I ended up having to add my own seasoning when I went home. They would do well with adding smoked turkey and garlic/onion powder. Mac and Cheese I'd give 2.5/5. It was a decent basic mac but even the addition of a sharper cheddar would have kick it up a bit and also it need something to elevate it.
