I have walked by hundreds of times so I finally stopped in. The music was cranked. It was a little early for the beer garden. It brought me back in time to the Charley's at Kenmore Square. I beat the Harvard student and tourists so there were plenty of seats. I sat at the bar and had a double cheeseburger and fries for 16.00. You can't beat the price. It came out after about twelve minutes. The fries were cold so they must have been on the warmer. The burger was medium rare so I was pleased with the burger. I would return. read more

This place is great! Old school diner vibes with the booths and bar stools. Came here on a whim Friday night for some dollar oysters. They're two dollars now, but still a good deal. The oysters were great though, better than some places I've paid double the price for. We saw they had a special for lobster rolls (2 for $35 as of the day I'm writing this) and couldn't say no to that. Yes it's lobster salad not pure lobstah pieces, but we were still very pleased for the price and felt that we still got a decent amount of lobster on our rolls. We also got clam chowder which was phenomenal, actual clams in the chowder. We came for the oysters and will be back to try the rest of the menu and catch a game. They've got 4 or 5 TVs so you can catch a game while you're eating here. Funny thing is what we ordered isn't even what they're known for, I think people come here for the burgers and beers, not oysters and lobster rolls. I'll try that next and report back. read more

Charlie's ups the game!! I'll be the first to admit it, haven't been here in a longgg time. Imagine my delight when I ordered the chicken and waffle. It was not the bland stuff you get in a lot of places. This was a crispy spiced chicken and a waffle with wonderfully spiced maple syrup. I've never had spiced maple syrup before. I am now a fan. Charlie's Kitchen is your typical local/college bar type of place. The vibes are very relaxed and lowkey. Compared to most places in Boston, the prices are definitely a lot more reasonable. Just know you might need to call out a few times to get service. My friends and I didn't have anything to eat, but I'm guessing it's pretty standard bar fare. The food is undercooked and over priced. $11 for 5 mozzarella sticks and $13 for 6 wings. They only offer curry, bbq, and Nashville hot as their choices for sauces, all of which belong nowhere near a chicken wing. The romaine lettuce the food is served on is dusted with something that makes it look like somebody scraped a grill onto it. Keep walking, Cambridge doesn't offer a lot for bars in my opinion, and this certainly isn't the spot. read more

Went to Charlie's Kitchen after 9pm on a Friday for super cheap oysters. If you go between noon and 5pm or after 9pm, it's 50 cent a piece for the first dozen (per person) and then $1 a piece. It's a fun casual spot to hang out with friends, or grab late-night beers, but make sure you have reasonable expectation before you go because it's not high quality oyster and not comparable to other seafood spots in the area (think Waypoint). It's decently fresh, but nothing special, and some of them have sands on the bottom of the shell. We didn't try the food, but the overall vibe of this place reminds me of night market in Asia (think Bangkok). They have a beer garden in the back that was pretty crowded, and an outdoor patio seating area facing the bus stop on Eliot St. I can see why some people call Charlie's a Harvard square staple or a gem, and others call it a tourist trap. The waiters were nice and the food came at a reasonable time but it took them a while to notice us when we were trying to get the check. We came on a Friday at 2PM and the place was pretty much empty so the waitresses were too busy talking to notice. FOOD/DRINK: - Oysters = Came here for the $1 oyster deal they have during the week. They were fresh but surprisingly small. We were okay with the size though since it turned out the 1st dozen is just $1 for 2 oysters. If it wasn't cheaper we would've been much more disappointed - Fries = Part of the deal that got us walking into this place was the $2 fries you could add when you order their oyster deal. The side was pretty small but again, the price made it okay. - Clam Chowder = It was pretty good at first try although it could do with a bit more clams. But as I ate more of it, the more I felt it was too salty for my taste. It also did not seem to sit well in my stomach afterwards OVERVIEW: - The 50cent deal per oyster is enticing but I'd rather pay $1 per oyster in other places doing oyster deals than to come back since the price difference is not significant enough. Review #1022 Another solid 3-star establishment in the Harvard Square area. They have multiple TV screens here. When I visited on a weekday, one was playing Jeopardy and the other was playing a movie. I would totally give this place 4 stars but the booth tables can barely fit 4 grown adults here. It is very cramped, and I didn't even have room to stretch or take off my coat. It was kind of chilly night, so I left my jacket on. If you are seated the booth, be sure not to hit the person at the booth behind you! Good selection of adult beverages here.
