The steak and cheese we went for was unbelievable. Great. Walked in, was so excited to belly up. Get a couple beers at the bar. Sit down. Ready to go. Our bartender greeted us like we didn't belong. We went for the steak and cheese and she never mentioned it. She was an older woman. We were appalled on the confusion when we walked in. There was no one at the bar the entire time we were there. But we were approached a few time with negative and bad attitude. My brother asked for an iced coffee. Let it be known it was brunch. " she told him she couldn't make that happen " after an hour of waiting for the special "steak and cheese ". That was fire but also not in the menu and not told to us about on the special. During a confusing right and wrong conversation with the bartender we found out there were actually specials that she was never going to show or speak to us about. Little hide and seek. I liked it. The best part was when we asked to put the golf on the television "I have to ask the manager." That never came to fruition. We finally found the guy after 3 rounds of testimonies. Let's remember there is no one else at the bar. Finally we are finishing up and my brother has half of his steak and cheese left. "Can I take this in a box "? The bartender says. "Give me a minute I'm busy ". The answer she gave for every single small request we had at this great restaurant. Water. "Give me a minute ". Order food "give me a minute " can we close out "give me ten minutes ". Thankfully this awesome younger guy was right there at every move when we needed him. Well, I saw a picture of the dry aged burger of a yelp review. The picture drew me into taste this burger . I made it a destination lunch intent. Beautiful bar counter, long bat for seating and many tables inside and outside nice covered seating . I ordered the burger and the description of ingredients drew me in further to taste this burger . Foscia bread, Muenster cheez, onion jam, aioli. The roll was perfect softness but toasted. Nice thick dry aged beef burger, the melted cheese , onion jam, aioli mayo all worked together and a dip by me in ketchup. I did get a dry aged beef taste vs a regular beef burger... but not enough to say it was a differentiator . This was an outstanding burger . I consider this one of my top favorite burgers in Boston area. I ordered the hash browns and they were left off my plate, but eventually arrived . They took the hash brown costs off my bill... I ate the hash browns after the burger was gone . These hard fried potato blend was outstanding taste . I would have like a drizzle of pink sea salt or custom made ketchup blend. When you serve a terrific burger, outstanding g hash browns... why not a chef blend of a honey ketchup with special ingredients or spices. Even the pickle was great and just enough and tasted like a slice of a grillo's type dill pickle not a jar Heinz pickle . The Maine lunch beer pint was a perfect beverage pairing. Overall excellent lunch, great service. Nice vibes as a restaurant in a high end Hotel with elegant appearance, seating, well dressed groomed staff. Fantastic Service from the greeter to the manager to the Bartender felt important and well serviced. I sampled a couple sparkling wines prior to ordering, as well as was provided a recommendation of some of their best appetizers. The ambience is fantastic. I sat at the bar solo on a business trip. I ordered an Aperol spritz, which was perfect. I did go for the whipped ricotta and black truffle toast. Josephine's to me is a 4.5-5. The food is always reliably good whether for lunch or dinner. The pies are always delectable along with the mozzarella stick appetizer! Crispy, no sogginess. We have also enjoyed their Rigatoni vodka and over the course of several visits have enjoyed several other appetizers. They have a good wine selection and a full bar. Service has always been relatively attentive and the ambiance is nice/modern. It is attached to the Cambria. I would say give it shot, the outdoor seating on a nice day is enjoyable too and I've brought my dog along on those days. Also very good pick for a family friendly restaurant. read more

For dinner and drinks, this is a great restaurant in the neighborhood. The ambiance for a cocktail party was great, and the hamburger sliders and cocktails were top notch. In particular, there was an orange mezcal cocktail I loved. For brunch, it was good but not great. The pancakes were good, but the eggs Benedict wasn't as good as I hoped. It was trying to be too many things. I think it would be better if the veg was on the side and not on the egg, and the Benedict sauce could benefit from having more flavor, maybe a little more spice. The coffee and cappuccino was also mediocre. The service was friendly and the location convenient, right next to the Cambria hotel with an indoor entrance between the two. The server doesn't really come to your table nor do they have communication with their peers. Plates are forgotten and meals come out staggered after a significant amount of time waiting. We've been to a lot of Italian restaurants - and they're all usually pretty good. But Josephine's was absolutely exceptional. From the moment we entered, we felt welcome as the menu and offerings were explained. We ordered the broccoli rabe and the chicken parmesan. The rabe was super-flavorful, perfectly prepared (slightly chewy), and a garlic aioli. The chicken parmesan portion was huge, enough for 3+ people. The spicing made this the best chicken parmesan we've ever had - by far! Both dishes were absolutely delicious as was the white wine. We were treated to lightning-fast service, friendly staff, an exceptionally nice waitperson, and an immaculate dining area. The restaurant was nicely decorated, with lots of space between tables. I've been to Josephine a few times now. Most times I'm able to grab a seat at the bar for a light meal / just drinks pretty easily. The space is really nice and open, and especially open in the summer. The food is decently good. I've never had anything I didn't like here. It definitely doesn't blow you away but it's good! They also have martinis on tap, but I don't really know the benefit of having them on draft or if it's just gimmicky. Most recently, we tried their torched rice pudding which was really nice (good contrast of the warm torched sugar top with the cool rice pudding underneath). The pastas are also pretty good, my fave so far has been the carbonara. Would definitely go back and recommend. read more

I always seem to struggle w/ finding parking in Somerville, in general, but we did end up finding a street parking spot eventually LOL. They had so many dishes we wanted to try on their menu but we ended up just getting 5 dishes, for two people: -fried artichoke hearts ($12) -whipped ricotta w/ black truffle honey ($14) -i think we're alone now pepperoni pizza ($23) -thatcher street's finest deep dish (salami, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, peppers, onions) $36 My favorite was the fried artichoke hearts! OMG, they were TOO good. The other appetizer we ordered, the whipped feta, was also amazing but I wasn't too big of a fan of the pink peppercorn. The lemon aioli sauce for the fried artichokes was to die for though! Now, onto the pizzas. The "i think we're alone now" is a hot honey pepperoni pizza, which was tasty but we couldn't really taste the hot honey, at all? The thatcher street's finest was a deep dish pizza w/ salami, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, + onions & was HUGE. Since it came last, as it took the longest to cook, we each only ended up eating one slice each. This was definitely a very hearty and overall, enjoyable meal. Girl, I like you but I can't visit you that often. So. Much. Cheese. Josephine offers thin crust and deep dish pizzas and damn they are tasty but sometimes they will literally clog your arteries. Burger is also legit, and the standalone meatball - yum! I'm not a fan of arrancini, but if they are your thing, you can get those two. They're sort of known for their negronis, but the full cocktail list is solid. Love the vibe inside and the large patio. Michael Scelfo is the chef behind Alden & Harlow (hot take: I don't love it there), Longfellow, and this place. I see the thread but also appreciate the simplicity of this menu. Shrimp cocktail came with half a lemon with OLD BAY seasoning!! Genius! Big shrimp, two sauces were great too, horse radish cream sauce and a classic cocktail sauce which was a tad sweet for me but I'll get over it because I'm all about the lemon and old bay. Cesar salad! Big salad! Wish we shared one. Big garlic croutons with a bit of rosemary and you could taste good olive oil on those. Dressing was very lemony and there was a hefty amount of cheese. I'd say even if you're someone who prefers a creamy Cesar you'd probably still like this because there's a lot of cheese which added great texture. The food is good, the drinks are great, but not when the bar is full of dirty plates and glasses and the bartender is so overwhelmed that she can't make eye contact with anyone. So excited about this addition to the Somerville restaurant scene! I'm a big fan of Waypoint and Alden & Harlow, so I knew I had to try Josephine when I found out the same chef is behind it. First things first, the space is stunning. The decor is super chic, and it's not a small space, but it still manages to feel cozy and intimate. There's a huge bar stretching across one side of the room. They were running a bit behind when we arrived for our reservation, so we grabbed a spot there while we waited. I was immediately sold on Josephine when I opened the drink menu and discovered draft martinis with a whole list of fun customizations. My husband and I both went with draft dirty martinis; I opted for the blue cheese olives and he chose the pecorino and calabrian chili olives (which were definitely our favorite). Warning that the blue cheese ones are extremelyyyy smokey, so if you're not into that, I'd skip 'em. The martini itself was great, I'd definitely order it again. Once we were seated, we ordered the Burrata & Smashed Avocado (the puffed rice and calabrian chili on this...chef's kiss) to start followed by the Joseph's Dry Aged Burger and Carbonara. For a pizza place, this spot makes a darn good burger, the focaccia bun was unreal. The carbonara was nothing special unfortunately, I'd probably skip it and check out some of the other spaghetti or pizza instead. There was some confusion with our check at the end of the meal, they actually had to correct it twice, but ended up giving us a small discount as a result so I won't hold it against them. Would get again! I'm always going to order cocktails with buzz words like fat-washed olive oil gin. What we ate: - Jo's Shrimp Cocktail: This is the only dish I wouldn't get again. It came with a 50/50 sauce, which I had never heard of. One half was cocktail sauce, but we were unable to identify the other half. While the shrimp and sauce were tasty, the value was not there. You only get 3 large shrimps for $22, which doesn't feel like enough. - Mozzarella Sticks: Fried to perfection served with delicious tomato sauce. - Garlic, Fresno Chile & Good Olive Oil Spaghetti: We're typically order red sauce , but I'm glad we tried this. Surprisingly posh and dateworthy digs on Somerville Avenue just outside Union Square. Long bar. Lots of booths. Outdoor dining. Connected to a hotel. Parking not as tough as you might think. Two visits: a weekend brunch and a weekday lunch. Smoked Wings: Very tinted red color and deep wood flavor with spiciness from the rub and a very light coating of sauce. Visibly overcooked, with extra crisp exteriors, shrunken size, and pretty dry interiors. Bones pulled out of the flats easily. Decent flavor otherwise, but having no moisture beyond the sauce was rough. Unfortunate about the dryness. More unfortunately, this was my appetizer on my first visit, but delivered well after the entree. Melon Salad: Elegantly plated and beautifully presented, a feast for the eyes. High quality ingredients and tasty. Good use of olive oil, puréed peppers, herbs, abd seasonings. This was for my wife but I can see getting that myself too. Mushroom Wood Fired Pizza: Not as leopard-spotted as hoped, but good looking crust, and the mushrooms (my nemesis) actually seemed doable: crisp and vinegar soaked. Crumbly Fontina cheese. Surprisingly, no tomato. Nice finishing oil. This was also my wife's (she of little appetite), but I tried a slice and really liked it. Great balance of flavors, great contrast in the crust between crunchy exterior and chew interior. Neither fluffy nor dense; more of a midground density. All things considered, a win. I later saw an egg yolk carbonara style pizza with cubed guanciale (bacon) that looked great, so it was the target on the next visit. "Cacio-Nara" Wood Fired Pizza: This unusual number has reggiano crema, egg yolk drizzle, and candied black peppercorns, with the option to add guanciale for an xtra $5. This was the pizza I saw the previous time and well worth the extra $5, though that egg yolk drizzle was equally responsible for the wow factor. Imagine peppery pasta carbonara in pizza form, will all of the crunchiness, silkiness and fattiness, but with the wood cooked chewy pizza crust. It's a must-try if you love bacon, experimentation, or both. Dry Aged Burger: This was the main draw on the two visits that got me in here, and both times it impressed, starting with a pleasing visual. Char from grilling, cooked to requested temperature, great color, thin melted cheese, creamy condiment. Roll was a focaccia, I believe cooked in house, and different on the two visits: a higher quality version of an English muffin on visit 1 and a more traditional focaccia with aromatic rosemary on visit 2. This burger felt as good as it looked, with pink, flowing juices both times. Taste was very solid, not as strongly aged in flavor but nicely gamey and very good beefiness. Not much seasoning, but overall very, very good. Definitely not top 5 all time in Boston but probably top 10 all time and easily top 5 among burgers available now. Two square logs of fried potato on the plate joined the burger on the weekend brunch version. Service on both visits was well intended but a little distant. Weird how an app would come out so much later than the entree, but things happen and aside from that one app, the food was not only good, but different, creative, and excited. Great spot with friends or date night. We got the pork ribs with hot honey (flavorful, not too spicy), warm focaccia with canned anchovies and homemade butter (anchovies went well with the bread and not too fishy), hashbrown sticks had the perfect crunch, deep dish spiced roni (never disappoints and makes a great leftover) - deep dish takes 30 mins to make, so put it in first before your other orders, if you're hungry, their chicken parm was cooked to perfection but they are huge (can feed 4). If you have room for dessert - their olive oil cake is delicious (dense, can be shared). Our server was very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. It's a clear gentrification of Somerville and it really hurt me to see this overly priced pizza/Italian restaurant right next to good ol' Wings Over. *record scratch* so how'd I end up here? The flavor was great and not fishy at all. However, the crust was way too doughy and was not charred enough on the bottom. The carbonara also had incredible flavor. It was creamy, fatty, rich, and salty. I just felt like the portion size was half of that of any other Italian spot. The service and flow of the restaurant was also a little strange. I felt like our group was kind of ignored.
