Excellent bed and breakfast! Very clean and welcoming! Smells great! Very friendly staff! Highly recommend!

I want to support independent inns across the country. That's why I stay in them and avoid corporate hotels. This one was a terrible disappointment, unfortunately. Here are a few of my chief complaints: 1) There was no one to check me in when I arrived late after a long flight from California. After standing in the empty front room for a while, I saw a small sign saying to call a number to check in. I called twice before an insolent teen in sweatpants finally showed up to give me my key. 2) The inn adds a daily "tip" for room cleaning on top of an already high bill. (This is one of the more splurgey places to stay in the Black Mountain area.) If that wasn't rude enough, no one ever came by during my three-night stay to clean/tidy the room. The toilet bowl had dirt marks all over it when I showed up and there they stayed for the duration of my visit. No one made the bed. 3) Internet did not work. 4) Breakfast begins late -- at 8.30am -- because the chef has to take his five children to school. Seriously. So if you're staying there for work, as I was, you have to get breakfast elsewhere. That being said, after a lengthy argument with aforementioned insolent teen, the chef prepped me some breakfast items before he left for the night and left them in the fridge. That was very sweet of him. read more

My husband and I had a very pleasant stay at the Red Rocker Inn. We were visiting relatives in Charlotte and decided to go to Black Mountain for a couple days. The accommodations were perfect and we ended up having dinner at the Inn both nights. Food was very good as well as the service. I loved the idea of not having to drive to dinner or having to wait in line somewhere else. After about 930pm, the Inn was perfectly quiet and we slept so well on the comfortable bed in the Music Room. Black Mountain is a very cute town full of little shops and eateries. 20 minute drive to Asheville and the Biltmore Estate. Thanks for a wonderful stay at your Inn. Today was a special day! We surprised my best friend's husband who is going to be 80 years old this month in Asheville NC! So we wanted to go somewhere special for dinner and Covid safe. So the Red Rocker Inn gave us our own little room to dine in! The house was built in 1897 and is very quaint. There are red rockers on the lovely porch. The staff all wore masks and were very friendly . Our waiter John made sure that the food that my friend ordered was gluten and sugar free. She had the navy bean soup and trout broiled high and dry. We had the homemade meatloaf, mashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts. Our other friend had the homemade pot roast, red potatoes and green beans. Everything was delish including a delicious warmed biscuit, that was served with butter and apple butter. It was a beautiful day completed by this wonderful dinner with our dearest friends! read more

What a beautiful little B&B 15 minutes from Asheville, NC. So quaint and comfy. The room we stayed in (Garrett) was cute on the 3 floor, had a claw tub and fireplace. But next time I'm staying on the ground level because of my knees and all the stairs. I've gotta walk plenty more stairs tomorrow at the Biltmore. Anyway, very cute and glad we have the opportunity to stay for a few days to relax and enjoy ringing in the New Year!!! read more

So I live in Raleigh and watch this show called NC Weekend on the public television network there (btw great show to watch if you need any inspiration for North Carolina day/weekend trips!). A few years ago they featured Red Rocker Inn so I jotted it down for a future stop. Fast forward to this weekend when I decided to go to Asheville. I randomly thought about Red Rocker Inn and decided to stop by for dinner on my way home to Raleigh. One of the best decisions I made that weekend. First of all, the B&B is gorgeous! I only saw the lobby and the restaurant but everything was perfectly arranged and decorated. It had such a homy feel to it so I can't imagine what the rooms are like. Secondly, the food was amazing. I got the apple butter pork chops with asparagus and grits. Probably the best pork chop I've ever had. I regret getting a side salad because I couldn't finish it all! The portions were huge. I got a slice of coconut cake to go and I'm currently devouring it at a truck stop in Mocksville. I will note that the service is on the slower side so don't come here if you're looking to get in and out quickly - but if you're looking for a fantastic meal in Black Mountain and aren't in a rush, check out Red Rocker Inn for dinner! (Funny story, there were 5 of us eating as I was getting ready to leave. The table in front of me was commenting on another persons dessert at another table. They overheard and went around and shared their pound cake and ice cream with all of us. So it was a fun crowd - most people were staying at the B&B. Mike and Katy Cys are the new owners and have recreated the made a warm and cozy atmosphere that we remember while serving a delicious breakfast! We had an enjoyable visit with them. The restaurant is housed in a lovely vintage home. It has a wonderful porch with red rockers, a living room entrance with appropriate furnishings and a charming glassed porch with white table cloth settings. Unfortunately it was understaffed and incorporated a young waitress who could benefit from more training. The brunch crapes were good yet the berry pie had underdone crust. I have many memories of the Red Rocker. My cousins worked there, we've had birthdays and anniversaries there, and we make a point of going back every time we visit home. Sadly, after my recent visit, we won't be going back. Service was slow or nonexistent. My elderly parents stood at the waitress stand for ten minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge our presence, despite being on time for our reservation. We had to ask for silverware multiple times, no one even asked if we needed refills, our salads came without dressing, my meal had obviously been sitting under a heat lamp because part of it was warm but the rest was ice cold, our waitress disappeared for long periods of time, and our desserts took forever. We eventually asked a different server for our check. Meanwhile the manager sat at another table, chatting with the guests. Good for them, pretty bad show for us. I hope the Inn turns this around, because we've been going there forever, and would like to see it continue. read more

I kknew rri had new owners, didn't think they could be worse than old ones, but, i was wrong. I was very upset with my stay. I fealt unimportant and didn't make me feel welcomed. Food was great and I believe man's name was Dave, he's the only reason I'm not giving u one star. He was helpful and did everything in his power to make our stay better. This was a quaint little dining space attached to an inn that was quite bustling. Our server was a fella named Prosper, how cool a name is that?! He was great at his job! Very kind, friendly, and knew the foods well. I had the special flounder and shared the fried tomato appetizer with my date....all of it was quite delicious!!! I believe my date had filet or some form of steak, he enjoyed it quite a lot also. We shared a GAINT slice of the most incredible coconut cake!! My partner took me here for my birthday and we had a great time. The scotch eggs were really good and the bacon wrapped asparagus was a nice touch. I got the pork chop and my partner got the stuffed trout. Both were delicious, the trout was light and flaky, and the pork chop was amazing. I would definitely recommend the pork chop. We are locals, so we often forget about the awesome B&Bs in our area. We took our children for breakfast, and we all had such a special time. The Inn looked beautiful! Let me state up front that I have been an enthusiastic Red Rocker Inn patron for the last 20 years, the last 10 of which have been run by the meticulous, do-it-all-well innkeeper owners Jenny and Doug. Everything shows attention to detail from their 99.5 sanitary rating, to the charming 17 themed rooms, to their delicious southern style meals. In this review, I'll be addressing the breakfast buffet, which is included with a room rental or runs $10-13 otherwise. While its headliners (including Apple Oatmeal Pancakes and Turtle Cheesecake French Toast) change daily, its regulars (Slowcooked Cheesy Grits, Hashbrown Caserole, homemade biscuits, crispy slab bacon, banana bread and homemade granola) are nothing short of fantastic. If you are fortunate enough be able to try the mini Apple Oatmeal Pancakes you will find them to be incredibly moist and brimming with freshly diced apple. It's one of my favorite breakfast items anywhere. Be warned that the Slow Cooked Cheesy Grits could be a meal within themselves as could the Hashbrown Casserole, so special care must be taken not stuff one's self on these tempting side dishes. Fresh quiche or other egg dishes round out the menu, but Doug will also take special requests and will prepare eggs order, and as expected, he does it quite expertly. Everything else is great also from the coffee to the freshly made apple butter. Service is warm and friendly led by always smiling Jenny. Although I've never had a reason to complain myself, they aim to please and will go to great lengths to do so. If a person leaves here unhappy, they just can't be made happy anywhere. I give this 4.5 stars rounded up, only because the trees have grown since they described room, and you cannot see the mountains as implicated. Breakfast buffets are amazing and lots of options. What a great evening! The service was great, the location perfect and we LOVED the food! A really nice selection of entrees - we chose the pork chops and pot roast. The pork chop was cooked perfectly, and the apple glaze and onion straws set it off perfectly. IMO, 'pot roast' is a misnomer - these were deliciously tender huge slices of roast beef in a yummy sauce - not shreds in a brown sauce as so often is the case. Both were outstanding. The true star of the evening was the coconut cake - get it to go if you must, but don't leave without it. We sat on the porch (pre and post dinner) to chat and enjoy a glass of wine, and our waitress provided outstanding service throughout the evening. We dine out often, and don't rate restaurants 5 stars unless they deserve it. Cannot recommend this Inn more highly! read more

We were unaware of the change in ownership going in, being that our last visit was approximately 4 years ago. That being said, we could tell something was different from the time we arrived. Although the restaurant was not that busy for a Saturday evening, we were left waiting in the lobby for a good 10-15 mins before being greeted by anyone. Once seated we were surprised to see open tables all around. The smell of home cooked meals and biscuits that before made our mouths water was absent, which was a true disappointment and a sign for things to come. They were out of several items on the menu, to which the waitress stated "they need to update it". However there were no specials or items that needed to be added to the menu, leaving us limited options. The food we selected ranged from unseasoned to over salted, the biscuits were not fully cooked and assumably from the freezer. The filet my significant other chose was burnt on the outside and rare inside (he ordered med rare). We had been craving the experience we first had with the Red Rocker Inn for a long time, only to be completely disappointed by the changes implemented since our last visit. The Red Rocker is truly a classic establishment for great Southern mountain hospitality and incredibly wonderful dining. The entire B&B plus dining experience far exceeded expectations. Arriving for a two night stay during our attendance at an event nearby, we made a dinner reservation and we're pleased with the prompt and cheerful service from the entire staff. My wife had Salmon Scallopini and I opted for the special Seafood Skillet. Fried green tomatoes for the appetizer set the bar high. Reese's pie for dessert completed a memorable dinner during our visit. The lodging accommodations are comfortable and tastefully finished for the themed decor. We also enjoyed the casual opportunity to mix with other guests solely through our own choosing and not due to any programmed requirements. Quiet, comfortable, casual and timelessly charming. I have not been here to stay but I have been to dinner a few times. The atmosphere is cozy with the tables in sections to make it feel smaller. There are fireplaces for the cold or just the look when it is hot. You don't have to stay here to have dinner but you should call for a reservation because they will make the most awesome biscuits. They make as many as they need for the reservations and few extra just in case. But you don't want to miss them, they are worth an extra call in advance. The food is great. They have veggie options and make everything fresh and you can taste it. I have had multiple options and never been disappointed. We have always gone in groups and everyone says wonderful things about what they had. I do want to say, save room for dessert. You don't want to miss this. The coconut cake is so light and moist and delicious that you will wish you had it for the main course. When there is blackberry cobbler I am so excited, I drool. I kid you not. Fantastic food, humble hospitality, and awesome accommodations My wife and I recently attended my Homecoming Reunion at Montreat College. We decided to stay at The Red Rocker Inn, and we were so glad that we did. Although this is a Bed and Breakfast, they also have a well-respected restaurant that is open to the public. Our breakfast(s) were incredible; we stayed 2 nights. From the scrambled eggs with asparagus, to the breakfast potatoes, to fresh fruit and biscuits and gravy with sausage and bacon. The Amish oatmeal and banana bread were terrific as was the apple butter. They have a crack kitchen crew with great culinary skills. The second morning brought incredible Spinach Quiche, carrot cake pancakes with Vanilla Syrup - in addition to delicious repeats of the day before, all hot and fresh. We had 2 mornings of this fantastic food - included with the nice accommodations. My wife and I stayed in the Anniversary Room. Although it had a claw-footed tub, there was also a walk-in shower. The bed was quite comfortable, but did require a small stool to get into the bed since it was taller than a normal bed. With the elevated bed, you are further away from the cool floor in the winter. Everything was clean and neat. The bed, the room, the bathroom, the shower. It was obvious that the staff care about every detail - the room, the food, the service. They even provide complimentary water bottles, Cokes, plus snacks in the afternoon. The chocolate chip cookies were delicious. During our stay, the place was quite full of guests, but there was no delay in getting food. As I mentioned, the restaurant is open to the public, at least for dinner. The menu choices are not limited, and are as good as you would find at a fancy restaurant. Remember, this is a Bed and Breakfast, at least that's why we stayed there. If you are traveling through, or to the Black Mountain or the Asheville area, and prefer Bed and Breakfast accommodations rather than the standard hotel/motel, be certain you check out Doug and Jenny Bowman's total package - Bed AND Breakfast. I believe you will be glad you did. We sure were. In fact, we would probably stay here again, should we come through this area again. read more

Had a lovely stay at the Red Rocker Inn. Service was nice. Food as good. Accommodations comfortable.

As a retired professor/consultant for restaurant/hotel management of 30 years my advice is to never stay at the Red Rocker Inn unless there is absolutely no other place to stay! I will explain the reasons why I feel this way. First the good news: The staff and owner were quite friendly. The room was comfortable. The breakfast options were among the best I have seen as we usually only stay at B&B's and Inns; the Eggs Benedict and Omelet were very good. And it was available until 11 am. Now the bad news: The price paid for each room night is overpriced given, for example, there are no television's in the rooms. The room was warm and there is no way to control your own temperature - you are at the mercy of the thermostat set for the Inn. There is ONE television in the drawing room on first floor and it does not have cable. Unless you want to sign in to one of your streaming accounts (leaving it open for the next guest if you cannot close it) - no television for you. The access to the Inn is ridiculous! You have to hold open the storm door, which has a VERY strong spring, and try to climb up three stairs to the main door which also has a spring on it. It is a difficult thing to do if you are trying to hold open both doors and enter with your luggage, etc. I literally rescued two elderly guests who were stuck between the storm door and main door trying to get up the stairs and enter the property! Yes, the breakfast offerings were very good BUT be prepared for a very long wait to get it. On our first breakfast, there were only three other couples having breakfast. It took 30 minutes for our breakfast to arrive. Also on the first day the server had her infant son helping out; kind of cute but not really as he was interrupting the couple next to us and others. The quality from one day to the next was inconsistent; one day the yolks were a little runny for the Benedict (perfect) and the next day cooked to medium. On our last day, the owner served us breakfast. We got biscuits, butter and apple butter from him to start. Were we supposed to have been given biscuits the first two days? Beware hidden fees and expenses. There was actually an automatic $10.00 gratuity each day! What? I have never seen that fee! I hope that is going to the staff and not in the owner's pocket as that would be truly unethical. Beware the bathtub when taking a shower or bath. There is no handle to stabilize yourself when getting into or out of the bathtub! Perhaps they will be installed after someone sues them for slipping and falling - which by the way, is the reason behind a majority of law suits against hotels and the reason you only see walk in showers in newly built hotels. I will leave it at that; hope whomever is reading this gets the picture. read more

The Red Rocker Inn is a beautiful Inn. Unfortunately, we cannot say that the stay was as nice. Our stay was on a Sunday night, so no dinner service was available. They did have out chocolate chip (awful store bought) cookies for a late-night snack. When we retired for the night, we found our room (Music Room on first floor) extremely cold. I went to the check in desk and pressed the "Ring for Service" button, but no one responded. I then called the owners phone and was only able to leave a voice message. Again, no reply. Our room had no heat coming into it at all and that night we were very uncomfortable due to it being cold in the room. We had every blanket on the bed, to no avail at keeping us warm. The next morning the owners didn't even acknowledge our problem until check out. They said that housekeeping should have had a space heater in the room as they knew of the problem. They didn't even mention why no one was available during our stay to assist us. We traveled with friends who stayed in a room next to ours. They did have a space heater and were told not to run it with anything else in the room. It would blow a breaker. I'm glad they didn't as no one would have been available to reset it. As for breakfast, coffee was served after 8:00am, one pot for the entire breakfast room. Several tables tried to get coffee but none came. The food was just okay except for the hash brown casserole which no one at our table could finish. We stay at Bed and Breakfast Inns often. We've never had an experience like this, the hosts were distant and not very friendly. The reviews for the Red Rocker Inn looked great and we were excited about the stay. They must have been for the previous owners as the new ones lacked the warmth and experience to run an inn. We reached out to the owners before writing this review by sending an email about our experience, and did not receive any response. read more

Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at this quaint inn in Black Mountain, NC. My wife had the salmon and I had the pork chop. We shared a bite of each others and both were wonderful. The service was attentive. It reminded me of eating at one of the great turn of the 20th century inns I got to stay at with my grandparents so many years ago. read more

This place is wonderful! We have visited 3 times and always a good experience. Old and charming but all in working order.. Comfortable beds, plush white towels and amazing breakfast along with the rocking chair front porch and comfy living room areas make this a real treat. The owners obviously love what they do and it shows. When you arrive they show you around the place, explain things and walk you to your room. Cookies are available in the dining room - homemade and delicious - until 5:00. When I walked into get some and they were gone, the owner noticed and went to the kitchen to get some for me. Haven't tried out the restaurant yet but might do that next time - menu looked great and prices reasonable for what they were offering. read more
