Stopped by Foothills Grange in Black Mountain otw to Asheville and absolutely loved the setting. The location is great, the outdoor seating area is awesome, and the overall vibe feels like a perfect place to grab a drink and hang out with friends. That said, the food itself landed a bit in the middle for me. I ordered the smashburger Carolina-style (asked for no raw onions) and unfortunately it still came with raw onions. My bigger gripe was the burger itself... the patty was noticeably smaller than the bun, which feels like a bit of a crime when it comes to smashburgers. Flavor-wise it was fine, just nothing that really stood out. I genuinely wanted to love this place because everything else about it is great. I did like Foothills Grange overall, but I'd probably recommend it more as a spot to grab a drink and hang out rather than a destination specifically for the food. read more

We love to stop in BM on our way into Asheville. We were roaming and I decided I wanted a beer and remembered visiting Grange a couple years ago. It's such a cool spot. It was cold so we sat at the bar but the outside patio and window are really neat. The have good food and a nice beer selection. We got the tallow fries and ranch and YUM. Great spot to enjoy a nice crisp beer or two. Overall a pretty cool spot with an "order at the counter" type feel. Plenty of rotating beers on taps and your domestic bottles. I came and worked from inside the place on a Saturday early afternoon. It was quiet inside, with most the activity happening on the spacious patio area. They've got a short list of no frills food options as well. I went with a burger, and it hit the spot. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way for the food, and rather treat it as a convenience here. Second time visiting. Very nice outdoor seating downtown, very kid and family friendly venue but pricing is pretty high for what it is. Yesterday, 3/24, visit first time for lunch. Went to restroom and there was no soap or hand towels. I brought this to attention of staff and (she) replied, "I know, we're out, it's Tuesday our deliveries..." Doesn't health code require soap and towels? How are staff washing hands if they are "out?" Regarding service and ambiance, a cool inside despite open windows, and I only had to wait about 15 mins. I got the Carolina Burger (consisting of chili sauce, slaw, onion and mustard) on a GF bun with fries. The flavors of the burger worked well together, but the bun was room temp but not heated (which I understand if it was to avoid cross-contamination) and the ratio of meat to toppings was a little off, so I probably should have ordered a double patty. We stopped here as we explored Downtown Black Mountain. We arrived as it began to rain lightly and began by trying our luck at opening the safe on the patio area. As we tried, the thunderstorm picked up and it began to rain much more heavily. I didn't have any luck opening the safe but enjoyed trying. The place has a cool concept. They also have an indoor area where you can sit at the bar or at one of a few tables. They have some outside covered areas. It looks like they have a food truck onsite but we did not check that out. It was raining hard so we didn't fully explore the outdoor area but did go inside and noticed the charming interior. They had cool neon signs and even had one mounted on the ceiling which felt like a cool idea. They have a small amount of swag and a large bar area for sitting and relaxing while enjoying a cold drink. read more

One of the best burgers in Black Mountain--maybe THE best, once you factor in the outdoor, kid-friendly, adult-friendly, vibe that the Grange affords its patrons. I still have yet to try out the other burgers in black mountain, so I can't say that it is authoritatively the best, but it was damn good. It's a fun spot to set up shop and enjoy a burger, fries, and a beer (They have an EXTENSIVE draft list, which is always changing and offers a variety of options for folks who like to dabble). The only thing better than the burgers themselves here, is the outdoor aura that the venue provides--an oasis right int the heart of Black Mountain with good music piped in. Updated, second try at the Grange, same order -Carolina Burger, fries, and a beer. Within 6 minutes of ordering, my burger and fries arrived piping hot. That chili is so good hot, the slaw was on point for flavor delivery in the Carolina burger, mustard and onions as well of course. Again the tallow fries were amazing. Originally the Foothills Butcher Bar located just two (2) streets to the West on Black Mountain Ave recently renovated an old ice house and relocated to Broadway Street (Hwy #9) just across from the Berliner Kindl German resturant and the iconic mural on the Black Mountain Brewing building. All their burgers are freshly ground and hand packed daily in their own butcher shop "Foothills Butcher Shop" still located on Black Mountain Ave and their hand cut fries are absolutely delicious! Service can be slow at times as they get pretty busy during the summer and fall peak tourist seasons with visitors to Black Mountain and the Swananoah Valley but don't be too discouraged if you see a crowd or long line ... the delicious food and ice chilled micro brews are worth the wait! Very dog friendly and walkable to free public parking on State Street to the East Love their loaded chill cheese fries and Foothills Poutine fries and all their classic burgers and sandwiches on the menu. The locals love this spot- they supposedly have a butcher shop! That being said- I was wanting more than a burger or hot dog the first time this place was highly recommended, however- later during the week we landed back in Black Mountain and enjoyed the open air seating. They have a bar, a small indoor seating area and a huge "yard" with tables, picnic benches and additional seating with a fabulous mountain view! You order at one spot and the food comes out from the food truck on the side- beers and drinks are available at the ordering counter. I don't know if Christmas Eve was an off day but this was possibly the worst burger place I've ever been to. First of all I paid over $80 for 3 burgers , a chicken sandwich and fries, one beer and soft drinks and some chilly cheese fries which I can only describe as cheez whizz with fake chile. The burgers were dry and my chicken sandwich was over cooked (the breading was almost black) , thin and lacked flavour. They were also out of hot dogs. I don't mind a limited menu , especially if the food is good but it was terrible in all respects and very overpriced. The best thing was my can of beer. We will not be returning. read more

We are locals and have eaten at the Grange at least 6-7 times since it opened. It's a great atmosphere, especially for kids. The unfortunate thing about the Grange is the food. It's not good. When they opened, they had a few kinks to work out with the food but, overall, it was decent. The veggie burger was in particular, quite tasty. This year, the food quality has tanked. I've been there twice in the last few months and each time have left with a stomach ache. Every food item is either heavily fried to death - referencing the chicken sandwich which was so fried the chicken ran away - or dripping in grease. And, the lovely veggie burger is gone. You can substitute a veggie burger for any of the standard burgers, but not the same. I said to my husband, "I don't think my stomach can eat there anymore." We will go for the atmosphere and the drinks, but the food is unfortunately, off the menu. read more

Overall, the ambience and food were quite good. This place has a pet-friendly, kid-friendly atmosphere where adults and children alike can enjoy one anothers company along with a beverage and some pretty good food. Unfortunately, all of these positives rapidly dissipated for us when dealing with the staff. We had a party of 4 adults and one child and had a bill of $98. We specifically ordered one of four hamburgers with no mustard for my 7 yo son. When picking up our food, we asked which burger had no mustard. The kitchen worker at the window said he didn't know and literally shoved the food at us through the window. He informed us that the cook may know. Ok, no big deal... I simply asked the cook which burger had no mustard. He informed me that he had 10 orders going and quite rudely told me he didn't have time to deal with me. COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL to the core. As we were walking off, the cook tells the kitchen helper not to let customers get to him (as in the customers don't matter). We then asked to speak to a manager. Apparently, no manager of any measure was on-site, and therefore no one was willing to even really acknowledge that there was an issue. I for one don't know how you run an establishment with no one at all in charge. Such a promising place with such terrible customer service. Someone should clue the staff in on the fact that without customers they will no longer have a job. 2 stars for front staff, ambiance and food quality. read more

Waited 48 minutes for food (takeout for 4, no warning it would take a long time, plenty of tables available). Our burgers were so overcooked they were dry and grainy. As we waited all we heard was the kitchen staff complain about customers, no sense of urgency, grill wasn't full. It's a shame because the ambiance is cool and it seems like the meat they use is likely good (based on their marketing) if they didn't ruin it from leaving the burgers on the grill forever. read more
