Came here to try their lunch specials as we were craving sushi one day. Extremely cheap lunch menu. We split 2 rolls and got one lunch dish each. There was quite a long wait for overall service throughout our visit which was slightly irritating but it seemed like there was only one waitress to man all of the tables. By no means were they super busy, but I understand it given the short staff. The food was decent, we got the shrimp and avocado roll, which I didn't care too much for and the spicy salmon roll which was also just "ok." It did just enough to satisfy the craving we had. For the meal, I got the drunken noodles which I absolutely would not recommend. I wasn't a fan of the flavor at all, and usually, drunken noodles are spicier than I received. There wasn't any spice to this at all, and they added bok choy, which I've honestly never seen in drunken noodles before considering I ordered a Thai dish. My boyfriend got the Mongolian beef which was definitely better than my dish, but still overall pretty mediocre. Both meals came with either a soup or salad, which was just a garden salad with ginger dressing. Meh. Overall, I would visit again if we're going for a quick/cheap lunch, but nothing more than that. read more

Great sushi! Now I don't have to drive all the way downtown (SS or DC for that matter) for great sushi! Nice TV's at the bar and a couple micro brews on tap as well as Kirin. This is a surprisingly elegant restaurant for the location with great food. It is definitely a welcome upgrade for 4 Corners and glad to have this little golden nugget in the neighborhood. I will definitely be back and would love to try the other Chinese/Thai selections on the menu, but I can't seem to get past always wanting sushi! This is my second visit at this restaurant and I only came back to give this place a second chance, which I sincerely regret. I ordered the Terriyaki Bento Box (3 shu mai dumplings, a California sushi roll, terriyaki beef strips with vegetable stir fry, and white rice). The portion size was reasonable, but the quality of the food was less than basic. The terriyaki was "terriyucky"- dry and flavorless beef, coated with a brown sauce that tasted more like water than even a basic bottle of terriyaki sauce you can purchase at your local Asian market. The vegetables on my plate were a basic arrangement of snow peas, carrots, and water chestnuts. Similar to the terriyaki, they were also flavorless and watery - almost as if someone defrosted a bag of frozen vegetables, and threw them on a plate, without adding any seasoning. The only redeemable factor about the dish was the Shumai dumplings which were rich and savory to the bite. My only regret about the dumplings was that they didn't serve more of them. At the end of my meal, I received a fortune cookie that said, "You will make a change for the better". I wish I could say the same about the impact of this restaurant on the Silver Spring community. read more

If you like bland food, this restaurant is tough to beat. I can honestly say this was the blandest, most flavorless food I've had in a really long time. I came here sometime in June with my husband to treat my mother and mother-in-law. For starters, we had crab wontons. Not only were the wontons burnt, but there was barely any crab meat in them at all. For dinner, my husband and I each ordered the Bento Box dinner. It comes with a good variety of food, however the tempura shrimp tasted like sticks of oil. The batter was too thick and they had no seasoning in them whatsoever, not even a little bit of salt. The accompanying California roll was mediocre and just as the rest of the food, lacking basic flavor. My salmon was burnt and dry. Out of all of the meals/ dishes ordered between four adults, only one sushi roll was ok. Everything else was a huge disappointment. Overall, the service was fine. Our waitress was nice, however, we were left without water to drink for a pretty long time. It's a shame that the food had no flavor, because in theory, the menu selections sound decent. read more

This was my first time at this place as I am visiting from outside the area. The menu was great and all of the food was delicious! But, the staff was less than desirable. It seemed like they were more interested in hanging out with each other than tending to the guests. Also, I ordered drinks of their cocktail specialty menu and no one knew how to make them! They were trying to figure out the ingredients, and then figure out where to find the ingredients behind the bar. My salad and sushi appetizer came out before my drink. All-in-all it wasn't a bad experience and I'd definitely go again; all it would take is a good server and readily served drinks to bump this up to a 4 star easily. read more

I had the lunch special for $7.95. I had an avocado roll and a shrimp tempura roll. The avocado roll was pretty good, but I wasn't a fan of the tempura roll. The shrimp tasted greasy and was a bit bland. It was also sort of small. I also had the miso soup, and didn't like the taste of it at all. The service was fine. Dined here on Oct 17. Food (4): Had some sushi as an appetizer and sesame chicken for the entree. Sushi rice was a little under cooked, but the fish/veg tasted fresh--overall, good. The entree was tasty and a portion large enough for two. Service (2.5): Granted this was the second night they were open, service was lacking. It appeared 5 tables were sat, with a mix of 2-4 customers per table. It was about 10+ minutes until we had our drink/food order taken. Water refills could have been more frequent. It was clear that servers didn't have dedicated tables, and perhaps there was only one true server pulling double duty as a hostess. Ambiance (4): Very nice decor and a classy step up from what's expected given the exterior and surroundings. There are plenty of tables, a sushi bar, and a full bar. We will definitely return in a few weeks. Hopefully the kinks with the service will be smoothed out. read more

I am sorry to say my husband and I have not had good experiences with Red Maple, at either Silver Spring location. The food is excellent. However the service and staff courtesy level is low. We were going to the Four Corners Red Maple once a week right after yoga class. We got there in plenty of time before the kitchen closed. Yet the waiter, who waited on us every week, would look at his watch when we walked in as if we were unwelcome. He was cold and never acknowledged that we were becoming regular customers. We tip well and were so disappointed by the unfriendly wait staff that we stopped going. When I went into the Red Maple on Grubb Road, I got a similar reception: very cold, aloof and unfriendly staff taking a carryout order from me. You just get the feeling that they don't want your business or don't care about keeping your business. There are so many other places to dine; you'd think Red Maple would be more welcoming. read more

I come here a few times a year with my work unit. Tonight I made the mistake of coming with my wife and kids for dinner. Several parties came and went between when we ordered and when we got our food. We asked the server about our order and he went to kitchen to inquire and said it would be right out in 1 min. 15 minutes later when the food finally came, the order was wrong (and was indicated by our check) too spicy when we ordered not spicy (kids with us). Sushi roll still missing. The server explained that it was his first day. I get it, but maybe they should have paired him with an experienced server. The food is great. With deep fried sushis lots of sweet sauces its not 100% authentic, but I dont think they aim to be either. I think their menu is an Americanized Asian menu and I think they've pulled it off right. This is my first time eating here but my in-laws love this place. The food was excellent and I would suggest getting the Philly roll. The service was decent enough as I was kept informed about our food and my glass was never empty. The reason for the three star rating is the wait time. It took way too long to get a seat and in fact we had to ask twice to be seated. Luckily the people waiting to pick up food were pleasant to talk with. After we finally sat down we placed our order right away. It it still took over 40 mins to get our food. Ladies and gentlemen, I am officially announcing the end of the Doomed Quest! Now I need to apologize because this review is severely overdue (think: criminal negligence). Since discovering Red Maple in Silver Spring last November, Ms. Classy and I have been patronizing this establishment as much as three times a week. After many disappointing experiences, we have found our 'go to' Chinese place. We checked out their menu, which they offer Ms. Classy's standard in which she judges all Chinese food: Crispy Shredded Beef. I'm a General Tso's fan, and usually opt for the chicken, but here, I have the luxury of ordering General Tso's Shrimp! I know this may sound like nails across a chalkboard to a Chinese food 'purist,' but a purist I am not. It's good and doesn't kill my wallet so that's all I need (aside from this ashtray, this remote control, and this paddle game, that's all I need). If you haven't guessed by now, the food is very good. Depending on our hunger level, we usually select one (or both) of the following dishes: Crispy Shredded Beef, and General Tso's Shrimp. The General Tso's shrimp has become our favorite. On days where we order only one entrée, this is it. The thick sauce is full of a mix of sweet and spicy flavor and we try our best not to let a single drop go to waste. The breading has just the right amount of thickness and crispiness, and the shrimp is cooked to perfection. I also enjoy the broccoli, with some of that tasty sauce drizzled over the pieces, of course. I've been to many places where the steamed broccoli is a bit too steamed, but they get it just right here. The Crispy Shredded beef is a larger portion size than the General Tso's shrimp. These thinly sliced, thinly coated, and fried pieces of beef are covered in a savory sweet and sour sesame sauce that, like the other entrée, we absorb as much as we can with the rice as to not let any go to waste. If you visit during lunch, portion sizes are more sensible, and prices are more cheapskate-friendly. Unfortunately, their lunch menu doesn't offer or two favorite entrées, but they do offer General Tso's Chicken. You also get a soup or salad to start, and I opt for the miso soup. The sauce and breading on the chicken is just as described for the shrimp, and the chicken is well-cooked and juicy. Red Maple also offers a full sushi bar, which we have yet to try. We're just so thrilled that we found a place that serves awesome General Tso's Shrimp and Crispy Shredded Beef that we cannot make ourselves expand our horizons and try something different from the menu. read more

I cannot believe I haven't written a review for this place yet! Since moving to this part of Silver Spring, I've eaten here at least 6-7 times, for both lunch and dinner. It's so easy to overlook as you're cruising down Colesville Rd and it looks as if there's no parking, but there is plenty in the back. They have both Chinese and Japanese (sushi) menus. The Chinese food is always fresh and delicious, not at all like a typical greasy spoon takeout place. They have so many different signature sushi rolls and I try to try something new each time. My favorite at the moment is the Golden Roll, which is spicy tuna, salmon, and mango topped with eel and avocado. Their prices are extremely reasonable as well. Oh, and they have a full bar which includes some super yummy cocktail options. Service is always quick and good as well. Can't wait to go back! read more

My husband and I went to Red Maple for dinner tonight. It just opened and normally I don't like going to places right when they open, but we've been anxiously awaiting it since the signs went up (near by sushi!!!) so we figured we'd give it a go. First, they've redone the old, somewhat sketchy Fajita Coast interior quite nicely. It's clean and quite upscale looking, without being snooty. There's a nice looking bar with a few big TVs, which will be good once they can start serving liquor (they don't have their license yet). There is a sushi bar and a bunch of small tables throughout the place. The menu is mostly Japanese (huge selection of sushi rolls), with some Chinese and Thai type dishes included as well. We both got "spicy vegetable and tofu" soup, I got a few sushi rolls, and my husband went for their smaller sushi combo and some spring rolls. The soup was awesome. It wasn't at all spicy, but it was so vegetably and tofuy that I didn't miss spicy at all. A huge variety of fresh, crunchy veggies and big hunks of tofu crammed into the cup with a tasty clear broth on top - the broth was practically an afterthought ingredient, there were so many other things in there. My rolls (California & Philly) were very fresh and delicious. Good ratio of ingredients. My husband enjoyed his sushi and the spring rolls were light and crispy. Overall we were very impressed with the food. Looking around at what other people ordered, the non-Japanese dishes looked really good too. Fresh steamed veggies and good looking meats. I'll probably go that route next time. The service wasn't phenomenal but they just opened, so they get a pass on that one from me. All the servers were very friendly, but you could tell they aren't quite in sync with things yet. I imagine things will get smoother as the weeks go on. Went there for the first time today. It's actually not bad. It's definitely not the best sushi I have ever had and the hot and sour soup was a little bland, but nothing was bad or gross. The prices are pretty good too. I would go here if I was having a quick craving for sushi and thai curry and beer. So, my room mate and I order take-out from here frequently since it's close to our house and Spring Garden is tastier but further away and more $$$. There's some definite pros and cons to this place. So let's start with pros: Pros: Sexy-ish atmosphere, very nice and dim, backlit bar area with TVs, but not a sports bar...more classy. Good date spot. Online ordering is great/convenient. Prices are pretty decent for the quality/amount of food you get. I love their sushi and so do my friends. If you eat-in, which I do on occasion, the presentation is creative and impressive. My friend and I had dinner with cocktails, two appetizers and a bunch of sushi and walked out with a combined check of $25 or so. That's awesome. Cons: There is a permanent smell of fish!! Yes, I know that they serve a ton of fish dishes/sushi, but so do other restaurants and grocery stores and I don't get a nostril full of it. You park and enter from the back, near the kitchen, so this could be the reason. Parking is very limited and you have to be mindful to park in the allotted spaces or the owner of the Greek restaurant will tow you immediately. The wait time is also not great. We made the 'mistake' of ordering take-out on a weeknight dinner time and waited AN HOUR in the waiting area as they made our simple orders of sushi. The worst part of this place is that they do not deliver!!! At all!!!! No delivery. Please deliver!!!!! Also, it's alwayssss empty in there. For a restaurant that doesn't deliver, they either do 90% take-out, or they are really not attracting customers. *Personal complaint* Hope you enjoy basil because ALL of their thai dishes have basil sauce! read more

I would give this 3.5 stars if I could. As other reviewers have noted, this restaurant joins a glut of other Asian restaurants in the Four Corners/White Oak area. We now have 3 very similar sushi restaurants within five miles of our house. I will say that Red Maple is definitely the best of the bunch in terms of atmosphere. It's eerily similar in design to another relatively-nearby sushi spot, right down to the glowing sushi bar. Red Maple seems brighter, cleaner, and more family-friendly, however. We shared the sushi and sashimi platter for two, which is served on this ostentatious boat-shaped platter, complete with a net sail. It's a bit much, but kind of fun! Definitely go for it if you're dining with children. My 9 month-old son was fascinated by it, and I can only imagine how much more exciting it would be to a kid who actually understands the concept of a boat. The fish was good, but comparable to the other sushi bars in the area. Everything tasted fresh and good, but nothing particularly stood out. In another similarity to its competition, the service was only so-so. Our waitress delivered drinks quickly but then took quite a while to come back to take our order, which was silly as there were only three other parties in the restaurant at the time and at least twice as many servers, hostesses, and bartenders just sort of standing around the kitchen door. Once our order was taken the rest of the service went smoothly enough, but, again, wasn't notable. The prices are very reasonable. Sushi for two (with a soup and a salad), an appetizer, a side of rice, a beer, and a soda came to less than $60 before our coupon discount. Red Maple has been sending out coupons for 20% off in the Val-pak mailer the past couple of months, so bring that in if you can find one and it ends up being a really good deal. Overall, I had a good experience here but I can't decide if it's worth the drive when we have a very similar spot even closer to home. read more

Was in the area on Wednesday evening, and decided to go for some sushi. It was already close to 10 pm, so Red Maple was the only viable option, since it's open till 10.30. And boy was it a lucky coincidence. Walked in and the bartender seemed a little rough so we decided to get a table. Turns out the same guy was also our server. Not a bad guy, but just had a bit of a gruff demeanor. We ordered the sapporo roll, the titanic roll and the salmon roll. From the entrees we got the Chicken in Szechuan style. The chicken was a little bland and lacked salt. The star of the show, however, was the Sushi. Both the sapporo and the titanic rolls were excellent, with a very nice flavor palette and fish that was fresh and flavorful. The salmon avocado roll, was in comparison, quite average. Overall, I think Red Maple has some of the best sushi in the area, and for that alone i would go back time and again. read more

I would recommend opting OUT of the Chicken and Shrimp Bahamas - the ingredients were not well incorporated and it was not at all served with pineapple fried rice, like the menu says. More like white rice with some chopped up yellow objects in it. Thank goodness we got other food to go along with it.
