They have events almost all nights and I want for their open mic story telling. Loved the vibes and you can see it's been loved for decades. Support them and visit them if you find an event you like. This is a wonderful gathering place in a nice peaceful neighborhood. They have a well-stocked bar with a small amount of bar munchies like hot dogs and fried cheese sticks (mmmmm!). They host a monthly burlesque show called Tease Tuesday on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, and it's usually an eclectic, creative, funny and fun evening. They also host live music nights, some electronic music nights, and a variety of other creative events. We walked in here and planned to order some drinks while we waited for our reservation next door. We had about 20 mins to kill. The hostess was snobby and told us we had to make reservations for the performance that was happening later. We asked if we could just go to the bar and didn't plan to stay long since we had 20 mins to spare. She said the bar was not allowed to take walk ins. She went as far to tell us that the performers had to get paid which we didn't say they shouldn't. No one was playing yet. The place looks like a cute hole in the wall. But I doubt we would consider going there any the future . read more

The venue itself is not good. The menu is super limited and consisted of dips or soups that were around $10 each for a small bowl of mediocre food. Really not worth it. We tried the chicken enchilada dip and the spinach artichoke dip & it really seemed like a joke when they came out 45 mins later. We mistakenly came hungry thinking since it's a "cafe" they would have a dinner menu. We ended up getting fast food after because between 3 of us, the two small dips for $20 weren't enough food and weren't even good. Don't be us. Eat first. Alcohol is also very expensive and probably not worth it. The place is small but gets crazy packed. So, don't eat the food. Probably don't drink their overpriced alcohol. But come for the show. We saw Nerdlesque & it's amateur setting, no crazy theatrics but was hilarious. They have some super talented, creative, people and that made everything else worth it. They also had a dance party after so that was cool too. They have a tiny lot so arrive early but not too early because they don't open the doors more than a few mins before. We expected them open an hour early but nobody was ready and made it known we were just in the way so we sat in the car and waited because there isn't anything else to do in the shopping center. Theres no full nudity but everyone had pasties & it was hilarious. These are real people, real bodies so don't expect supermodels up there. Do expect to laugh & be impressed at their performances. I'd contemplate going back for another show. read more

Disclaimer: this review has nothing to do with the show we saw, nerdlesque. It was fantastic and deserves a much better rating We went to the red light cafe for a burlesque show, and we were super excited to try something new. They overbooked the place to the point that people were having to stand the entire 3 hour show. The place felt dirty, and staff was not very friendly. Due to the packed nature of the establishment, we didn't get our food for over an hour. We had ordered spinach artichoke dip (which was obviously microwaved to a ridiculous temperature) and chicken enchilada dip (it was literally soup). Neither of these were very good, and I'm honestly not sure if the menu is always so limited on choices or only that limited during events like that. The show saved the night for us, but I think red light cafe would benefit from revamping their menu along with their organization for such events. It's such a fun concept, but it has poor execution. read more

I went to Red Light Cafe last night for an event. This review is about the venue and not the event. This location seems dirty like they don't take the time to deep clean. I understand the owners have owned the place for 9+ years. Seems they are due for a refresh. Maybe go with a theme that does not look like leftovers from a garage sale. The quality of the food is poor. Stuff you can quickly make and serve. No real depth to the menu. It tastes like the stuff you can expect at a gas station. The bar is good but they are charging prices I see at local 5-star venues. The staff is good. They are friendly and offer good service. This is not a ding on the service at all. Went for the first time as a Birthday night out to Tease Tuesday. What a fantastic night out. The Burlesque was a blast, the performers were just amazing. Avery - the MC was a riot. The cafe itself is a cool place, with a dive bar feel without the sticky floors. I really liked the atmosphere and I'll definitely go back for other performances there. read more

What a cute little venue. I have lived nearby and NEVER heard of this place. So they must not do the greatest job at advertising. A friend invited me to a flamenco event tonight. We looked up the menu and saw it was just snacky/appetizer sort of food so we decided to eat dinner before arriving. Plenty of parking at Amsterdam Walk area. The venue is a bit small, but it makes for a nice semi-private, intimate experience! The stage is also small, but it worked for this show. There is a bar that offers various drinks. Many patrons were taking advantage of it, but I did not so I cannot comment on the drinks. Two unisex bathrooms in the back - not in the greatest shape, but gets the job done. I would totally see a show here again if there was something interesting! read more

We went for a burlesque show which was so much fun. I will be going back. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that the website says it has entrees to we planned on eating there during the show. It has a few appetizers and a couple of sandwiches. That is it. To me that is not a dinner menu so we ended up eating elsewhere after the show. Since the main reason for going was the show I would say it was a 4 star experience though. read more

A few days ago, as I was sla^H^H^Hworking at my cubicle, I got this message from Yelp: Bonnie P. thinks you might be interested in this upcoming event Octave at Red Light Cafe Interesting. I gave it some thought and then decided to accept. Now, ordinarily I don't usually go out on social stuff - and usually the events I marked in Yelp I don't get around to going anyway. But since I got a personal invitation, I made my mind to go. Now I never heard of the Red Light Cafe. Obviously, there is some salaciousness with the name itself (apparently inspired by the name of the street it is on; at the moment, I get blurry visions of scantily clad women in my mind's eye, which I am furiously blocking out right now.), but despite that, it appears to be a while known and reputed institution in Atlanta. Of course, the cafe name itself brought the usual images of turtle-necked fashionistas, typing away at their Macbooks and railing against the Military-Industrial complex while sipping away the espresso. Yeah, I don't go out that much to these places. Which shows when I came by to the place (after fighting my way through traffic). First thought: Dark. Then somebody came up to me and said: "Papers please." Then I got beaten up. Actually, no, that is not true. The guy just asked me to pay the cover charge (and also asked me which group that I am seeing). Thank goodness for cash. The place itself is actually pretty neat, if not a bit small. The stage itself is right in front (and it is red!), the seating area is in the first half of the cafe (hooray for seats! No repeat of the Loft*), then there is a bar area, and then an area way in the back where the Octave group is getting ready. Paintings of various artists adore the walls on both sides. As for the food. . . . didn't try it. Looked at the menu, wasn't too enthused (wasn't really hungry anyway), so I had a ginger ale (which was a bad idea - stupid soda made me burp and wizzy). As for Octave, it was a great performance from the women, singing various acappella versions of classic songs and current hits. I am definitely going to try to keep an eye on this group whenever I can (thanks, Bonnie!) Overall, it was great atmosphere and ambiance. I'll definitely come back here for future performances of various groups - assuming that I am in the mood to get out of my Bat Cave. :) *That is the subject of another review. If it were only for the Thursday night Bluegrass nights, I'd give this place five stars. While the bands booked tend to be top notch, I mainly go to participate in the jam sessions. Last time I went the cover was $3 if you bring your instrument but that has been a while. You can't beat that. Thursday nights draw some pretty good musicians from all over the metro and you can definately learn from them. There are usually several jams going on at once and they tend to move outside once the band takes the stage if the weather is nice. The staff is pretty laid back and the crowd seems to be a good mix of young and old. If you're into Bluegrass or folk, this is one of the best places in the city to go for it. read more

Tease Tuesdays at Red Light Cafe is definitely a secret that not many people in Atlanta aware of. Tickets for the show were $7 (Goldstar) and the show lasted a few hours with a 10-minute intermission. It was general admission but the seats were very close to the stage. This is the second time I have been here for the show and it never disappoints. Everything from dope poets to strip teases to comedy. A great show! The cafe itself could stay a little tlc but I think it also gives the place some character. I will definitely be back! read more

I didn't try the food; I came to listen to my friends play music and to get a drink. The atmosphere seems to be centered around the establishment being used for concerts. There's dim, quirky lighting throughout the restaurant with plenty of focus on the stage near the front door. The tables and chairs are nothing fancy, which lends to a super casual vibe. It feels like the kind of place where no one would mind sharing a table with you. There's a couch seating area and a bookcase in the back near the bathrooms! My husband and I chilled out back there with some books from the shelf and enjoyed the singer/songwriter artists who were playing up front. It was a very relaxed time, and I really enjoyed it. The bartender who helped me was very friendly and gave me a tip on what kind of drink I should ask for. I really appreciated her help, and I really appreciated how kind and understanding she was. No "I'm better than you" attitude anywhere. All the other staff were very friendly, and they seemed to really know how to handle the crowd. They were making arrangements with the bar stools to make sure there was enough room for everyone No complaints whatsoever! read more

I went to Red Light for the first time last weekend to see a friend's band play. This is a small little spot, which is great for watching a band if you like an intimate setting. There was a great crowd and the music was fantastic (except for the second band.. you know who you are) The food here was less than desirable - we had the chili queso dip and it was more like water something chunky dip for $8 BUT.. we went for the music and beer and both of those were excellent. This is a small gem tucked back in the Amsterdam Ave cove that I think you should definitely check out. read more

I went here to see a girlfriend of mine perform with her acapella (spelling?) group - Octave - here on Saturday night. 5 stars for their performance - 3 for the venue. It's just a room at the end of a strip of shops. Good acoustics, kind of drab place. The stage is right when you walk in the doors and is pretty tiny too. Just random tables and chairs scattered around, you have to go up to the bar to order food and drinks, and the selection is pretty scarce. My hubby's burrito was sub-par, but my blue cheese iceberg salad wedge was good but nothing to shout about. Would I go back? Only if another friend of mine was performing there. read more

The building itself is a little "divey", but I do like the way they set up their tables and chairs, it feels like theater seating. The Red Light Cafe is an exceptional venue for performance groups, and they offer terrific hospitality and fantastic general service. The beverages are well made by seasoned bartenders, and the atmosphere is one which welcomes patrons and gladly provides them with a place to enjoy a night of entertainment. The staff go out of their way to assist their patrons, oftentimes even going as far as aiding and cleaning up after inebriated, non-paying customers who often wander in from the club across from this location. They also look after the talent which performs in their venue, accommodating as best they can and safeguarding them from offensive or aggressive patrons. This is one of the few locations in Atlanta where I've felt welcome and taken care of. I highly recommend it! read more

A funky little venue with decent bar. It's got a real dive feel, meaning it could use a good cleaning and you feel dirty going to the bathroom. I wouldn't trust any drinks more complicated than a call drink or a beer. But you should know that as soon as you walk into this place. I did not eat, but came prepared not to. Despite the menu saying they serve entrees, there are only sandwiches and chips. So don't count on having a real meal. The event was an open mic night, which was organized fairly well. The usual guitar players and comics running the gamut from decent to baffling. Does the hook from vaudeville still exist? Did I have $5 worth of entertainment? Yes. The flamenco performers were great. But the venue and mgmt falls way short. The show was way oversold. We were held outside in a mob of other ticket holders as "V.I.Ps"' were allowed to get all the good spots. Although we were one of the first of the mob let in, we barely managed to secure a table. It was in the back of the room and we could not see. When my wife got up I was harassed constantly by standing customers desperate for her seat. The food must be ordered at the bar and it took forever to prepare. Nothing to write home about either. Melted brie and cold carrots out of a plastic bag??? Too bad... I liked the show but we left at intermission, tired of the place and trying to peek through heads and bouffant hairdos and get a glimpse of the stage. I don't think we will go back again. read more

I must say, I am a fan. I have passed this cafe many times while coming to Amsterdam Walk. I came across an event here I wanted to attend. The space is so intimate and homely. There is an area in the back where you can lounge with a sofa. They had a very small menu. I was hungry and ordered the Shrimp Corn Chowder for $10. The serving was not large and it was full of raw onions and under cooked potatoes. Overall, I enjoyed the atmosphere and the space. I can't wait to attend my next event. read more

Went here last night night to hear a friend's band play. The space is tiny. There's a small stage in the front, about 10 tables, some couches and a small bar in the back. There is no table service here. When we walked in, the door person told us that we'd have to go to the bar to order drinks and food. Good to know. No big deal. I was kind of surprised to find out that the bar only served beer and wine, no liquor. The food menu was also very limited. We didn't try anything, so I don't know if it was good or not. The music sounded good, but the place felt very cramped. We got there early enough to get a table and were sitting at a 2-top that was against the wall. There were a lot of people standing and even though I was sitting, I felt like I was constantly having to move my legs out of the way of people passing by. All in all, a cool little spot, but get there early if you want to be comfortable. And eat beforehand. read more

This is an interesting little bar/restaurant. We came here the other night for the bluegrass night and just came in to listen. There were very few people other than the ones playing in the group there. We ordered a beer and sat listening to them play for a while. Extremely talented individuals. They all knew each other, so I am not sure how welcoming they would be, probably pretty friendly though. It has a really casual vibe with nothing too fancy. Some people in past comments complained about the bathrooms, meh, they were not super snazzy or anything, but they weren't noticeably gross or anything. In fact, I actually don't remember anything that stands out about them at all. Neat little place. Beer was a tad expensive... about $7 for a beer, but since we came just to grab a beer and listen to music, I guess that's not so bad. I didn't try any of the food.
