I ordered the fish fillet and black bean sauce lunch special. Normally this would just be a short review about how the restaurant met my expectations and is local enough for me to become a regular. But this is going to be a long review, I've got a bone to pick with you guys. The main fish component from what I ordered tasted great and was the correct proportion size. The fried rice that came with it was kind of basic but also tasted good. The issue I have is I've never gotten too little rice from a Chinese restaurant ever until you guys. Normally a lunch special will come with almost twice as much rice compared to the main dish. But you guys use a container where the rice amount is smaller than the main dish. This boggles my mind. I can understand if I felt like there wasn't enough shrimp in my lunch special, there's obvious cost of issues for expensive ingredients there. But you should never give a customer any reason to dock you for one star for not serving enough rice. Good quality rice is so cheap, even if you're putting work into frying it. I can understand some customers are into their low-carb diet, but I'm a big guy that likes to eat Chinese after working out. I'm going to ask about an extra rice option next time I order. read more

I have to admit I was skeptical because I didn't think there could be authentic Chinese food in Brea haha. But I saw the good reviews and gave it a shot and I'm so glad I did. I was craving steamed (not fried) fish and was so happy to see it on the menu. It had a soy sauce and had ginger as well. The flavor was amazing and reminded me of what my mom used to make when I was a child. The fish itself was tender and flavorful as well. It came with a side of srice. Looking forward to trying more of their dishes! I really like that you can order easily through the Yelp app. Update 1/26: tried their vegetable chow fun and it was perfect, exactly how I used to eat it growing up in the Bay! Absolutely delicious Chinese food with great selection and even better pricing. The employees here work their ass off and it is very busy usually so you might wait a little but it will be very much worth it. Try the king pao tofu, beef or chicken. We had Red Lantern cater a church lunch for us, and everyone loved the food! We ordered the Orange Chicken, Teriyaki Chicken,and Crispy Beef along with chow mein and fried, white, and brown rice. The Teriyaki Chicken was the biggest hit! The food was great in quality and in quantity! We had enough for everyone to eat until they were full and then take home leftovers! Ordered from this restaurant for the first time. Good and bad. I'll start with the bad. Sauces were mixed up on orders - one was supposed to be Orange Tofu and the other Sweet and Sour Chicken. But the tofu had the Sweet and Sour sauce on it and vice versa. Also, paid extra for broccoli in the Tofu, and there was such a small amount, it was sad. Now for the good. My boyfriend and I ordered take out tonight , kung pao chicken and sweet & sour chicken with white rice. This should be enough for 2 people but we are still hungry. Having lived 15 yrs in Hacienda Hts where a new Chinese restaurant opens every 15 seconds, and taught ESL Asian students who gave me their recommendations on "great" Chinese food, (bottom line? It's all in the Anglo taste buds subjectively), I'm establishing my "creds" as an American with a taste for healthy Chinese food. It's not easy to find it; let alone close to my home in Brea. However, joy unbounded, today I tried Red Lantern for lunch. The waitress spoke English well, and was very attentive, sharing with me that their chef is from Hong Kong and the owner from China. The veggie eggs with homemade orange sauce were outstanding. The lunch special off cashew chicken was the best I've had in years plus the citrus-based salad dressing was delightful. Cheap, highly salted, MSG-laden buffet-style Chinese crap that passes as food is not my thing. This place is definitely NOT that and you pay for that benefit nutritionally and fiscally. The littlest rug rat and I were on our way to visit grandma and needed some lunch. My child is not a picky eater and if there is one genre of food this kid consistently loves, it would be Chinese. I was breaking multiple laws as I drove down the street scanning for a place to eat while at the same time consulting my bookmarks and the Yelp mobile Nearby function. Red lantern popped up and the results seemed encouraging. We need something fast and reasonably priced, so I figured this would do the trick. We went with two lunch combos and at $6.99 each, with soup, egg rolls, fried rice and a main; that is a pretty competitive price. My son had the egg drop soup which I would content was much better than the sweet and sour soup, which was meh! The surprisingly bad part of the meal were the egg rolls. They tasted like they were dipped in chemicals or plastic. It is pretty hard to mess up an egg roll and these we horrible. Seriously, not even worth a second bite... And, now, for some good news. The mains of chicken cashew and Brocolli and Chicken were very tasty. They weren't overly salty, the vegetables seemed fresh and the sauces complex. I struggle to rate this place between a two and three star. We ordered take out tonight since this place was near to my house in Brea. We ordered garlic chicken, chow fun, and Szechuan beef. My wife is from mainland China so we are used to eating quality Chinese food and we understand that you can't get that at takeout places, but we expected better than what we got. They cut corners to try and save a few dollars (typical Chinese thinking Americans are stupid) and 90% of the vegetables were onions! Not even Panda does that. Only 1 or 2 pieces of squash. No broccoli as the picture shows, no carrots, no snow peas, no beans. Just all onions! NOT ONE SINGLE PIECE OF GREEN VEGETABLE! Unbelievable! They use so much oil it's almost unreal. The chow fun was so greasy that we had to throw it away. I have never seen chow fun this greasy. I have never in my life eaten worse Chinese food than this. Plus, they charge as much as regular Chinese restaurants when this is fast food Chinese worse than any I have ever eaten. Do yourself a favor and stay way from this place. It's total garbage. I have a belly ache now from eating this greasy food. Oh, I forgot to mention the Szechuan beef tasted exactly like our garlic chicken! There was no Szechuan flavor at all. They used the same exact sauce they used in the garlic chicken to cook the Szechuan beef! Can you believe that? If you read the reviews, 99% are Americans who don't know any better. This is my favorite chinese restaurant in brea. Good food. My favorite is the fried pork chops... Not too salty and not bland. The chow mein is awesome too. Pretty much everything I ate here was great! Ever since the place had new owners, the food seemed to improve quite a bit and looks a lot busier inside than I have ever seen before. They earn their high points from using fresh vegetables, meat with all the weird junk cut out, and not overcooking everything into homogenous muck, like so many other places. Red lantern is like any average booty call. It's not the best you've had, but it's there when you want it, it's convenient, they'll be at your door within an hour, and it will leave you satisfied. This is the best Chinese food I have ever had. I was talking to our friendly server to learn how they would classify the type of Chinese food it is or what part of China do they represent. Because I have had similar Chinese food but not all place serve the same taste. I was told that it was really catered towards American culture, so if you are looking for authentic Chinese this may be not for you. I absolutely loved the taste. I generally like to order Kung Pao Vegetables, Schezuan vegetables or Flat noodles with Schezuan sauce. If I were to rate their sauce I would say their Kung Pao and Schezuan sauce are tied at #1 place and Brown sauce is at #2 spot. Obviously everyone's taste is different, so some of you may rate it differently. But I would be surprised if you don't love any dish you order with either Kung Pao or Schezuan sauce. Our server has been very friendly with us the first few times she was a little shy, but now that she has seen us quiet a few times, she was very mixing and gave us amazing service (very accommodating). This place definitely breaks the "old Chinese lady taking order" stereotype. If they were only closer to me, I would be there few times a week.
