Cob sausage - A large rectangular pizza with a thin crust, topped with tomato sauce, cheese, pepperoni, and mushrooms, is in an open pizza box placed on a granite kitchen counter. The pizza appears to be partially eaten or sliced, with some slices missing. The background includes a power outlet, a paper menu, and kitchen items such as bottles and glasses.

I hope the staff was just having a bad night. I used to love this place, but tonight I paid $25+ for a very sad 24 cut pizza. Paper thin, not like it has been for years. Some slices had small holes in them it was so thin. Assuming new management or owners. .

I have heard so much good versus bad things about the COB, and when my friend invited me out to try it, I was in. The place is definitely outdated, feels like it has probably been this way since the beginning. My friend has been coming here her whole life and it is nostalgia to her. I was happy to tag along with her since I am always the one picking the restaurants. I also want to add the service was fast and friendly. The place was pretty crowded, but our drinks and food came out very fast! We decided to get the fried ravioli to start. They were good, average fried eats. The marinara served with it was good, and a bit spicy. Overall, you won't be disappointed with those. OKAY - The COB. I liked it! Maybe I was a hint ravenous during my visit and was excited to eat, but I don't really understand all the hate. I was literally nervous I would hate it, because I hate sweet sauce, I've had some really bad ones, but to me, this sauce was not 'overly sweet' at all. My friend said it pretty good, that for someone who eats pizza a lot, this is a nice change. Is it the 'best pizza ever'? absolutely not. Is it good - yes - and I would have it again. Try the COB, judge it yourself.

COB and Antipasti

This place is an institution in Troy, and you would never know that it is where it is unless you're from the area. The food is terrific, and it's literally one of the best antipasti in the area. I'm a pizza snob and I generally don't love niche pizza, but Red Front's COB (Cheese on bottom) is really damn good. Their sauce is sweet and I'd hate it on pasta, but on their pizza it's almost like a treat to eat. You can get it well done, but regardless it will be good. People that don't appreciate things that go outside the box, than that's on you, so don't hate... appreciate. K. Thanks. Bye. C.O.B. Sounds like a billboard top 100 hit just like the pizza!

a chicken burger with lettuce and tomatoes

I've been a customer at Red Front for over eight years and have had largely positive experiences. Their wait staff is kind and works hard. This review has nothing to do with them. Tonight, I ordered the same chicken cutlet sub that I've ordered over 30 times. I usually receive a chicken cutlet sandwich in return, but tonight, I did not. I was first surprised to be charged $15 for the sandwich, which (I think) the last time cost $12, but that didn't bother me. Things are getting more expensive, and I am happy to pay more for good food. I also tipped a couple dollars because again- the wait staff is great. But when I got home (10 minute walk), I realized I did not receive a chicken cutlet sub. I received a McChicken. A $15 McChicken. I first wrote "glorified" McChicken, but McChickens have the same amount of food and higher quality chicken on them than this sandwich, so I don't want to insult McDonald's. I called to voice my issue, and while the wait staff was empathetic, they offered no solution, so here I am. I have never left a negative review on a product that I've bought or a restaurant that I've been to. I usually have better things to do. I would prefer to email them than to angrily yelp my complaint, but I cannot find an email, so here I am, being that guy. I will reiterate once more that the wait staff is great, but if this is what they are being forced to serve, then this place is going downhill fast. Sad to say my tenure as a customer here is over.

This is your typical Troy hole in the wall Italian joint. I hadn't been inside in 20 years and my mom hadn't been in since college, but she said not much has changed since she visited 40+ years ago. It was kind of dark inside, very casual and a bit of a dated look. This probably isn't the spot to go if you are looking for a swanky and romantic ambiance. Red Front is famous for it's COB (upside down) pizza. I have not had that style pizza since my visit years ago, so I was very curious to try it. My dad and I split a 6 cut pizza, this was plenty for the two of us. The COB pizza had the cheese on the bottom and sauce on the top. The sauce is really tasty and a bit sweeter. The crust had a nice texture to it. My mom wanted the antipasto salad and it was HUGE, probably something you could split as an appetizer between 4 people. My husband and I used to pick up the regular pizza (cheese on top) from here in 2014 before we moved and we LOVED it. So delicious! Red Front has a really nice selection of Italian-American classics on the menu. I think most vegetarians will be happy with the food choices.

The C.O.B. Holy sweet tomato sauce batman!

A Troy institution for many years, this bar has a dated look to say the least. One of my dining partners explained there used to be a horrible red carpet that was removed. Smart choice by the owners. The new floors look nice! The Red Front is famous for the C.O.B. which is a pizza with cheese on the bottom. I have seen this before so it is not completely unique. We ordered one with fresh garlic. Essential this is a Tomato Pie like the ones found in Utica, NY. The crust was nice and crispy and we ordered it well done. Unfortunately the sauce was so sweet it was impossible to get past. The garlic cut it down a bit but the overly sweet sauce was so overpowering I just could not imagine eating it again. I was glad I got to visit a piece of Troy history. I would have no problem meeting someone for a drink here but the pizza is a solid pass for me in the future.

I haven't been to this original location on 4th St. in Troy for a few years. The family operation is nearly 100 years old. Remarkably, it's very much as I remember it. A tiny place with three tables. Some of the seating looks like repurposed church pews. The youthful staff, friendly as always. They were running into some delays as orders came pouring in just before dinnertime. They'd have to check to see if they could fit our order for a big pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, onions and peppers. They squeezed us in! Since the wait would be between 20-30 minutes we kept ourselves busy by checking out the desserts in the self serve refrigerator. I picked out a slice of "hangover" (alcohol) cake and I devoured it before our meal arrived. It was so delicious and naughty fun to eat our dessert before the meal. The pizza was fantastic when it arrived. I prefer crisp crusts-- this one was not-- but it was awesome just the same. My friend and I were so hungry that we consumed half of the pie before I realized that we hadn't photographed our delicious pizza. The remaining half was boxed and taken home to be enjoyed for a couple more days. The staff was so ready. They came to our table with the box and we settled up our bill. A lot to be said for tradition and quality. I've also visited DeFazio's in Albany, but I have yet to visit the relatively new restaurant up the block. Thanks, DeFazio's, for another great meal.

I'm going to start out with a tip. Ask to have your 4-cut pizza cut into 12 slices. (Easy math…read moreconversion if you get an 8-cut instead.) I've never been to Detroit and only had Detroit style pizza at one other restaurant which just so happens to also be local. I read that the chef at that other restaurant was originally from Detroit and was therefore quite knowledgeable and experienced in making the Detroit style. I've enjoyed the pizza there enough to have returned several times. So, I was anxious to try Uncle Dom's when I heard about it last week. After all, it's about 25 miles closer to home. I've Googled Detroit style pizza in the past and learned that it "is a rectangular pizza with a thick crust that is crispy and chewy. It is traditionally topped with Wisconsin brick cheese that goes all the way to the edges and caramelizes against the high-sided heavyweight rectangular pan." Uncle Dom's meets that criteria! (Actually, I don't know if the cheese was from Wisconsin.) Google also tells me that Detroit style is 1 1/2" thick. I mention this because Uncle Dom's is slightly thicker than what I've had elsewhere, is awkward and messy to eat when served in Dom's standard size cut (see my above tip), and you're likely to get sauce on your nose! At the pan's edge of a slice, Dom clearly hits the 2-inch mark (see photo). The dough at the center may be 1 1/2" but the generous amount of toppings, especially the delicious sauce, cannot help but kiss the inner top of the takeout box. All that dough is delicious. It has a great flavor on its own, but the caramelized melted cheese at the edges takes it up another notch. Chunks of ham and pineapple on the Hawaiian, blend great flavors with the sauce and dough. Sautéed peppers and onions along with a nicely fenneled sausage, also go great with Dom's sauce and (Wisconsin?) cheese. Love that sausage! Note: Beware of the prices shown on the webpage. They are out of date. My Hawaiian was not $14 but $16, and the Sausage, Peppers, and Onions was not $14 but $18. Both pizzas were well worth the higher cost.

Don't judge a pizza by its bar…read more What you might call a dive bar, I could call a culinary exploration. Located in Eldorado bar in Troy, some might call this place a dive, dumpy, a hole in the wall, but I found it to be a homey and comfortable setting. And, it is exactly what it's not trying to be, an excellent pizza spot. You could randomly stumble in here after a night on the town expecting crappy bar food, and find truly excellent Detroit style pizza. Uncle Doms was a last minute addition to a local pizza tour. We came late, the bar was pretty empty, and we quickly snagged up 6 seats at the bar. We came for pizza and ordered some beverages for our wait. The bar was well staffed and we chatted up the bartenders who were all raving about the pizza, rightfully so. The menu is simple, Detroit style pizza is what they serve. We opted for a large 8 cut plain cheese pie, double cut for sharing. It came in about 20 minutes, cooked fresh and delivered hot and beautiful. Detroit style pizza is a thick cut pizza cooked in a deep sheet pan, cheese covered to the edges to give you the most delicious and burnt cheesy crust, topped with sauce. This pizza was amazing. The crust, while thick, was so light and airy with a crisp and buttery bottom. The cheese and sauce were heavy, but paired perfectly with the thick crust. This pizza is crave worthy, balanced and very unexpected. Highly recommend checking this place out for a casual beer and pizza night. It's seriously unexpected and down right delicious.

Naturally it seemed like the perfect place for dinner! We decided to split a traditional cheese pizza and the chicken parm which turned out to be the perfect amount of food for the both of us - and some leftover. The pizza was great! Thick crust, classic marinara, and a generous amount of mozzarella. The chicken parm on the other hand was a disappointment. The chicken itself was too thick and dry, although a good portion size. The pasta was a complete miss. Flavorless, bland, and undercooked. The dish was also topped with cilantro which I thought was odd. For $27 and one of the more expensive items on the menu I was expecting it to be a lot more flavorful. Our service was sadly also not good. Our waitress was also a bartender so she got busier throughout the night with people at the bar. We ordered and she checked in on us once. We were waiting around awhile trying to catch her attention to get the check, but after 15mins another waitress ended up helping us out. We came on the slightly earlier side for dinner, but it was still a Friday night so by 6pm the place was packed and very loud.

The shop was running a lunch special offering a free soda with every two slices ordered. I was so happy. The young man behind the counter was friendly and so helpful. I had a bit of a wait because there were a couple of customers ahead of me. They were friendly, too. They got into a conversation with me and they made me laugh. Other customers who were seated at tables and already eating could hear us chatting. I could see them turn around in their seats and smile at us. It's an old style pizza shop. It looks as though it's been there a long time. The decor reminded me of the pizza parlors that I visited as a child. When it was my turn, my total bill came out to about $17. My slices were warmed up in the oven and smelled so good when they came out. The aroma filled me with anticipation on the ride home. The pizza slices were still warm when I got home. My husband immediately took a bite and declared the pizza to be great. I enjoyed my slices as well but I wish my bbq chicken slice had a bit more chicken and a bit less bbq sauce. Nevertheless, I was still delighted with my take out lunch choice. I do love pizza. I'll be back sometime to try more of the menu.
