Red Front is known as an institution in Troy. I was unsure what to expect when I came upon the restaurant. It is a bit run down from the outside but don't be scared off as I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in. It appears much refreshed on the inside and welcoming. It is a casual gathering place, so do not expect fancy. If you're looking for a pizza and some antipasto salad with wings then this is your place. I found the sauce on the pizza to be on the sweet side, definitely different so just a heads up. Of course its all personal preference so it's neither good or bad depending on how you like it. They are known for their sheet pan C.O.B aka cheese on the bottom pizza which stands out and was good. I also enjoyed their antipasto salad and the vinaigrette was tasty. Lastly, as I looked around they seem to have a loyal following and I dare say many regulars. They are crooks. I went in an asked if they could donate 3 sheet cheese pizzas if I bought 3 for a benefit a family member was having. Which they agreed to. I went in a few days later to pick up an order which at that time I paid for the 3 sheet pizzas. Which cost 70$. When I got home a looked at my receipt I noticed I was charged $88. When I went back to see what the extra $18 charge was, I was told it was for the pizza I had picked up when I paid for the other pizzas. I told the waitress I paid cash for that pizza I picked up that night. I paid $18 for my pizza plus gave the waitress a$4 tip. And was double charged for a 10 cut pizza.I was told the owner was in Florida a she would have her call me , which she never did. So I say folks watch your bills if your paying with a credit card... I have heard so much good versus bad things about the COB, and when my friend invited me out to try it, I was in. The place is definitely outdated, feels like it has probably been this way since the beginning. My friend has been coming here her whole life and it is nostalgia to her. I was happy to tag along with her since I am always the one picking the restaurants. I also want to add the service was fast and friendly. The place was pretty crowded, but our drinks and food came out very fast! We decided to get the fried ravioli to start. They were good, average fried eats. The marinara served with it was good, and a bit spicy. Overall, you won't be disappointed with those. OKAY - The COB. I liked it! Maybe I was a hint ravenous during my visit and was excited to eat, but I don't really understand all the hate. I was literally nervous I would hate it, because I hate sweet sauce, I've had some really bad ones, but to me, this sauce was not 'overly sweet' at all. My friend said it pretty good, that for someone who eats pizza a lot, this is a nice change. Is it the 'best pizza ever'? absolutely not. Is it good - yes - and I would have it again. My family grew up with Red Front in Troy, NY. The food was always delicious. Yesterday I ordered a six cut ham and pineapple pizza and a small antipasto salad. It cost me $36!! They didn't tell me the salad was for two people and cost $16. They didn't tell me the pizza was a thin crust, which my husband doesn't like and costs $14. Their pizza sauce was tasteless as was what little ham they put on it. If you're going to raise your prices, don't you think the taste should reflect that price? Had slice sirloin,Medium rare was closer to well and it was .The best thing about the meal was the baked potato! Prices were higher than advertised .Where else in the area when you order a entree you don't get a house salad or a cup of soup down .potato was hot Meat was cold and on the fatty side not a choice cut but more like a Select or Canadian grade of meat Maybe there Pizza is good don't know .My Girlfriend had Chef Special that was pasta in clam Sauce with seafood 3 shrimp 3 scallops and 3 clams very small portion.again price was wrong and not that benefits the customer.Will not be stopping in anytime in the future. read more

My Lemon Picatta was watery. The cocktails were great and the pizza which they are famous for was excellent my friend said. SADLY I can't eat pizza anymore but when I could I did go there many times for their C.O.B. and their stellar wings. I'm just really sad that my Lemon Picatta was off. I did not ask for a refund because they were swamped. Their food is generally really amazing but I don't suggest ordering the Lemon picatta. This place is an institution in Troy, and you would never know that it is where it is unless you're from the area. The food is terrific, and it's literally one of the best antipasti in the area. I'm a pizza snob and I generally don't love niche pizza, but Red Front's COB (Cheese on bottom) is really damn good. Their sauce is sweet and I'd hate it on pasta, but on their pizza it's almost like a treat to eat. You can get it well done, but regardless it will be good. I've been a customer at Red Front for over eight years and have had largely positive experiences. Their wait staff is kind and works hard. This review has nothing to do with them. Tonight, I ordered the same chicken cutlet sub that I've ordered over 30 times. I usually receive a chicken cutlet sandwich in return, but tonight, I did not. I was first surprised to be charged $15 for the sandwich, which (I think) the last time cost $12, but that didn't bother me. Things are getting more expensive, and I am happy to pay more for good food. I also tipped a couple dollars because again- the wait staff is great. But when I got home (10 minute walk), I realized I did not receive a chicken cutlet sub. I received a McChicken. A $15 McChicken. I first wrote "glorified" McChicken, but McChickens have the same amount of food and higher quality chicken on them than this sandwich, so I don't want to insult McDonald's. I called to voice my issue, and while the wait staff was empathetic, they offered no solution, so here I am. I have never left a negative review on a product that I've bought or a restaurant that I've been to. I usually have better things to do. I would prefer to email them than to angrily yelp my complaint, but I cannot find an email, so here I am, being that guy. I will reiterate once more that the wait staff is great, but if this is what they are being forced to serve, then this place is going downhill fast. This is your typical Troy hole in the wall Italian joint. I hadn't been inside in 20 years and my mom hadn't been in since college, but she said not much has changed since she visited 40+ years ago. It was kind of dark inside, very casual and a bit of a dated look. This probably isn't the spot to go if you are looking for a swanky and romantic ambiance. Red Front is famous for it's COB (upside down) pizza. I have not had that style pizza since my visit years ago, so I was very curious to try it. My dad and I split a 6 cut pizza, this was plenty for the two of us. The COB pizza had the cheese on the bottom and sauce on the top. The sauce is really tasty and a bit sweeter. The crust had a nice texture to it. My mom wanted the antipasto salad and it was HUGE, probably something you could split as an appetizer between 4 people. My husband and I used to pick up the regular pizza (cheese on top) from here in 2014 before we moved and we LOVED it. So delicious! Red Front has a really nice selection of Italian-American classics on the menu. I think most vegetarians will be happy with the food choices. read more

A Troy institution for many years, this bar has a dated look to say the least. One of my dining partners explained there used to be a horrible red carpet that was removed. Smart choice by the owners. The new floors look nice! The Red Front is famous for the C.O.B. which is a pizza with cheese on the bottom. I have seen this before so it is not completely unique. We ordered one with fresh garlic. Essential this is a Tomato Pie like the ones found in Utica, NY. The crust was nice and crispy and we ordered it well done. Unfortunately the sauce was so sweet it was impossible to get past. The garlic cut it down a bit but the overly sweet sauce was so overpowering I just could not imagine eating it again. I was glad I got to visit a piece of Troy history. I would have no problem meeting someone for a drink here but the pizza is a solid pass for me in the future. read more

The total is better than the sum of its parts. Philosophically, I'm fine with cheese on the bottom (COB) pizza. I've had it before and I've enjoyed it. I just don't particularly care for it here. Perhaps because the tomato sauce is just so darn sweet. However, when thinking about the COB pizza as a "dessert" pizza, and ordering it with ricotta on top, the experience improved dramatically. I preferred the corner pieces of their rectangular 10 cut pies. But these are pizzas that demand toppings. While it was impossible to distinguish between the crumbled sausage and the crumbled meatball on our two meat pie, the well browned bits of meat elevated the pie. And I was pleasantly surprised to find juicy red peppers on our onion and pepper pie. The onions were thinly sliced red onions too, and these classic flavors were right at home on a soft, comforting, oily crust. All of these savory toppings provide some balance to the aggressive sweetness of the sauce. Everything else was totally solid. And that's a rare thing. Chicken wings were all crispy, and well sauced. Between the medium and hot wings, at Red Front I preferred the hot, which seemed to carry more of the classic sauce. Even the mozzarella and melba fell within the top half of the form. The breading was delightfully herb free (which is important for pairing with raspberry sauce). And the sauce was chunky, instead of the odd syrupy melbas I've encountered elsewhere. The beer selection isn't going to win any awards. But for tavern-fare, it's more than adequate with a seasonal Sam Adams selection, a Harpoon IPA, and even something from Brown's down the road. Looking at any of these things on their own, and Red Front would look like a three star joint. But taken as a whole, the place is more special than that. It's a comfortable, neighborhood spot, with plenty of parking, warm service, and fairly-priced food. It's been serving the community comfort food for generations, and it's clear to see why it's beloved by many. Without a doubt, I'm a fan. read more

Back in the day, Red Front was our favorite place to go for pizza after hockey games. I grew up eating their sheet pizza, which has a soft doughy crust with tasty toppings, cheese, and sauce. Different styles of pizza are offered including cheese on top, cheese under sauce (COB), or white pizza (butter, cheese, & garlic), in 6-cut, 10-cut, and 24-cut sizes. Besides the great pizza, they also serve appetizers, chicken wings, salads, Italian dinners, steaks, seafood, prime rib, subs, sandwiches, hot torpedoes, and Pepsi beverages. The prices are moderate, most dinner entrees range from $8.50 to $18.95 and several dinners come with vegetable and potato or pasta. The restaurant has a very classic/old time atmosphere and is divided into a bar area (handles takeout orders) and separate full service dining room. Never answers the phone on days it states that they are open. Love the pizza but can never order it

First off, I got the spaghetti with a meat sauce and some meatballs. It was delicious. My only 2 complaints was that their spaghetti noodles were too thin. Seemed like angel hair to me. The other issue was the bread looked like sliced sandwich bread that had been bought from a store and taken out of the bag. I guess I was expecting a loaf of French bread having said that, it was delicious bread. The atmosphere was very intimate. The lights at one point were dimmed as it got dark out. Unfortunately, I was eating with a male friend and I would have rather the lights stay nice and bright. All in all, I had plenty to eat and it tasted very good. read more

The sausage which was fine ground was now big round chunks of a processed sausage that rolled off the slice. Also, if you want good food, run. $15 for a sandwich that was dry, cold ( I ordered toasted) and bland. The Red Front Restaurant & Tavern has been a local favorite for 55 years. Location is in downtown Troy, NY near Russell Sage College. I had visited here many times in the '70s. This is my first visit in about 40 years. Things really haven't changed much in that time. Same bar, w/ a few more TVs, Quick Draw. Loyal patrons from the past still frequent here. And now their families & grandkids visit. We arrived around 6:30pm and luckily found two seats at the bar. This place is always full on Friday & Saturday evenings. Locals in there usual spot on the corner of the bar having wings, pizza, & dinner specials while playing Quick Draw. The three bar high tops were also occupied. Bob, the long time bartender, took our drink order: a wine $5.50 and craft draft beer $6.00. He gave us a menu and the three specials for this evening: Drunken Chicken (vodka sauce) $18, ravioli & scallops in a spicy red pepper sauce $17, & broiled chicken w/ spinach & pasta $17. Fifteen appetizers on the menu, 12 of them deep fried. Note: the usual soup and or salad w/ meals are a la carte here. Meals come w/ good Italian bread. Dinner was 20 minutes on a very busy evening. My wife had her Friday go-to broiled scallops w/ baked potato. She said that the scallops were excellent. She would have liked a vegetable w/ her meal. I had the linguine w/ red clam sauce. Five whole clams and chopped clams on the dish. I was disappointed that this dish was so greasy. I ordered red sauce b/c I didn't want the usually too oily white clam sauce. The best offerings from here are pizza and their unique COB (cheese on bottom) pizza. This is want keeps people coming back. The pizza is extremely good. Also lotsa take-out pizza & wings the entire time we were there. Just ordered from here and figured I would write a review while waiting :) The pizza from Red Front is yummy..slightly browned cheese, a thick but not *too* thick crust that I really enjoy and a great sauce. I also like that it's square because I'm a fan of corner slices! If I want a red sauce pizza on the thicker side I usually order from here. Most of the time I'll also add on an app. like an order of fried ravioli or mozzarella sticks .. because obviously this is all about being healthy *wink* and those are usually tasty. Most likely not homemade and just fried up, but I still like it and the fact it comes with a side of their delicious red sauce, or raspberry sauce. I was invited here before I looked at the reviews and wasn't expecting much. Let me say that after reading the reviews, and as a first time customer I think the trick is what you order. We ordered several pizzas, including the COB, the fisherman's platter, the breaded wings, and calamari. The BEST pizza was the works.. salami, bacon, tomato, peppers, sausage, mushroom and extra cheese.. wow. I typically don't love pizza (long story short I OD'd on pizza when I worked at a pizza place in college) but I ate this deliciousness the following day for breakfast and lunch. The French fries were undercooked, but the clams in the fisherman basket were amazing.. as was the blue cheese I can only assume was homemade. The service was good, our server was accompanied by a few others and they were working hard. Oh and even for a little "hole in the wall", they still carried Prosecco.. winning!!! This places cheese on bottom (cob) pizza is 5 star but that is about the only thing. I came in from out of town to be with my family, we called day of to let them know we had group of 19. They told us "more than hours notice would be preferred". Ok, fair. Then upon getting there we were placed in dining room at 3 separate tables and were told no tables could be pushed together. Mind you we were in a large dining room with no one else at the time. So the point of being with family and sitting together-- was disappointing. The attitude received from the waitresses when asking the first time about pushing tables together was horrendous and rude. The room was freezing, everyone kept their winter coats on. At the end of the night we asked for separate bills by table, and were told no, and then charged additional service fee. Furthermore, when leaving we were told if we wanted to make a reservation and sit together next time we needed to mention that over the phone when making reservation, however I thought that may be implied when making reservation we would all like to be seated together.
