My wife and I went to Marisa's Place for pizza after listening to a review on TikTok purporting it to be the best pizza in the area. Skeptics that we are, we needed to see for ourselves. We walk into the place and they have a small pizza counter. The bar and restaurant are through the double doors to your left. I don't recall any type of seating at the pizza counter area. I think that's for pickup or if you want to stop in for a couple slices to go. I would imagine they do some slamming slices business during lunch. We walk into the bar area and four people are seated at the bar enjoying their pizzas. We were debating whether to wait to be seated or sit at the bar when the bartender/waitress asked if we were looking to be seated. Yes, we are. She asked if we had reservations. We did not, but she said that was fine. We were seated in the back which was pretty dimly lit. Ambiance. I usually gauge a pie's taste by a plain pie, but I saw they had cupped pepperoni so we had to order a pepperoni pie because I don't know of any other place near us that has cupped pepperoni. We also got the meatballs for an appetizer. For drinks, plain water. Extra water was brought to us in a bottle that was chilled... no ice. Very nice touch. More water that way. The water tasted really clean too. Special mention needs to go to the bartender/waitress who held down the fort all by herself maintaining the bar area and serving out the food to table customers as they were coming out. One group came after us and then another group of six were seated across from us. I don't know about the first group, but the group of six had reservations. We got the meatballs, which come with three as an appetizer. We each took one and my wife asked me, "So, what do you think?" I thought there were really good meatballs. A lot of times they're really dense and the meat tastes weird. These were soft, moist, and very flavorful. We even were eating the sauce out of the bowl afterwards. Really good sauce, full of tomato chunks, not sweet, and not acidy either. It was just perfectly tasty. The group of six with reservations, who got seated AFTER us, got their pizza first. I told my wife that it pays to have reservations. We were cool with that. We know for next time. We got our pie soon afterwards and had to take pictures. It did look really good. The pepperonis were about the size of nickels, perfectly cupped. The crust had the char that I always look for. This looked really promising. We both grabbed a slice, folded it and took a bite of heaven. The bottom crust is thin and crunchy. The sauce and cheese tasted fresh and not plasticky like some cheeses can be. The pepperonis added a nice flavor kick to everything else going on. I then went for the gold. My teeth sank into crust the crunch reverberating throughout my skull. Wow!!! This crust was light, airy, and crunchy. This pie was firing nitro on all cylinders!!! I was so blown away. Even my wife said, "I never saw you enjoy a pizza so much. It was like you were back in NYC." If that isn't an endorsement for Marisa's, I don't know what is. We took half the pie home because I wanted to same some for tomorrow's lunch. We finished the meal with a shared slice of NY Cheesecake. Not as creamy as NJ Diner cheesecake, but definitely hit the marks for a good NY Cheesecake. Hands down the BEST basic standard NY cheese pizza in the capital region. Light, flavorful, sublime undercarriage, cheesy, great sauce, crispy, I could go on and on. Zero flop the whole way through. Service is a little slow but well worth it. Very classic and old style place that will have you become a loyal customer instantly. 99% takeout spot so make sure that's on your radar. Also, most likely there will be a pretty long wait if you're ordering. They're always insanely busy and can only do so much with limited pizza workers. Be patient! Top top spot!! read more

You know it's good when a woman with an Italian accent answers the phone!! They don't do online ordering and they are about 20 minutes from my house so I don't order as often as I like. I got 2 extra large pizzas to go. One with half olives and half sausage and one cheese. I also snuck in an Italian blood orange soda while I was waiting. The smell walking out was so heavenly that a lady walking behind me had to comment how good it smelled!! Stuck in traffic I could not resist a hot slice on my way home. So delicious with tangy, garlicky sauce and oozing mozzarella. Hot crispy crust too and perfectly foldable like NY pizza should be. Next time I want to try some Arancini too. Is it a bit of a wait? Yes. Is the old school ordering a bit inconvenient? Sure. But it's quality and that can't be rushed. I've been twice so far. First time I got two terrific cheese slices. New York style with thin, crisp crust and a flavorful sauce. Second time I got a cheese slice again, but also a 'Marco Polo,' a slice with crushed plum tomatoes instead of sauce, and grated cheese instead of mozzerella. This time the cheese slice had a bit more cheese on it than I like, but the latter was wonderfully rich. Marisa's Place looks like a mere take-out joint at first, but when you walk in, there's a door to the left that - surprise! - opens up into a cozy bar. The family and I went to Marisa's for a quick bite to eat. We had made a reservation for 5:00 pm but were running late. We called to explain and the reservation person was very accommodating. Upon our arrival we were quickly seated. The menu is not extensive and is pizza oriented. This was not our first visit to the restaurant and I opted to try the chicken parmigiana entree - served with a small portion of spaghetti or penne and a salad. My daughter ordered the cheese ravioli while my wife ordered a salad. As an appetizer we ordered the fried calamari and bruschetta. The calamari were excellent, I have had them before and have never been disappointed. My wife and daughter enjoyed the bruschetta. The appetizers could have been a meal for us. The entrees arrived hot and looking delicious. My chicken parmigiana was excellent, while I originally wished the pasta side was a bit more substantial, by the time I had eaten every morsel of the chicken, I was glad that it had not been any larger. The chicken was moist, the marinara delectable, and the cheese perfectly brown and tasty. The spaghetti were al dente and just enough to accompany the chicken. My daughter was very satisfied with her cheese ravioli and my wife really enjoyed her salad. My side of salad was excellent as well. We all ordered gelato as dessert. I had the chocolate and it is one of my favorite desserts of all time! One thing to note: The pizza Margherita, while fantastic, comes with a sliced tomato on the top. I wasn't aware they had a dining area and when I asked if it was busy was told "you can look yourself" and as I did do was abruptly told "you can return that menu I don't have a back up". Felt like I was bothering them with simple questions. We ordered the Large Florentine (for 2 of us). The first topping is a layer of fresh tomatoes, topped with spinach, artichokes, sun dried tomatoes, garlic and olive oil. All the ingredients were fresh and properly proportioned, so no one flavor overpowered the others. It was delicious and I regret not trying a salad, which I suspect would be excellent. The ordering process was efficient, we called early in the day and for a 6pm pickup; they only took our name and number (very trustworthy, they didn't ask for a credit card). When we pulled up at 6pm, our name was displayed on a monitor hanging in the window. We paid the the super friendly staff, took our delicious pizza home and declared this our new favorite pizza place in Albany area. We froze the leftover slices which will no doubt taste great when we heat them up. After hearing many great things about Marisa's Place, I decided to see what the hype was about. With that knowledge, I ordered a sausage and pepperoni pizza and mozzarella sticks. To get underway, I started with the pizza which was a New York style pie. The pizza was very good, but had some flaws. To elaborate, the flavor was excellent and the sauce was really tasty. In addition, the pepperoni was sliced perfectly and they loaded the pizza with it. On the other hand, I didn't love the sausage as I prefer actual pieces of sausage instead of the slices. Additionally, while the crust had great taste, the bottom of it was a tad soggy. However, I enjoyed pizza very much and it is one of the best in the Capital Region. Succeeding, I tried the mozzarella sticks and they were fantastic. To explain, the sticks were definitely house made and were breaded to perfection. Moreover, the cheese was fresh and had the perfect pull you want in mozzarella sticks. To top it off, the sticks were paired with a delicious homemade marinara sauce. When you've eaten all the (homemade) mozzarella sticks, and everyone is still fighting over the marinara... When you tell people you're not a big fan of calamari, and then you wind up being the one who ate more of it than anyone else... When you came here for the pizza, and you realize the pizza was your 5th favorite part of the meal... ... then you know you've stumbled upon a good place to dine, even better when you can come with a group among whom you can order a variety of foods to share. I could not stop raving about (or eating) the items we ordered. That started with the mozzarella sticks and the calamari, but it also included the wings, crisp and with great flavor. The pizza was very good, and I enjoyed the toppings and sauce on their vegetarian pizza, but I wasn't as big of a fan of the cheese pizza or its crust. But again, the sauce and toppings are what make the pizza great here. We had a bit of trouble getting our table set up at the start, but that was because there was a lot going on there at the time. The beer list wasn't huge, but I was able to find things I liked. Definitely save room for dessert, in this case their peppermint cannoli. It's pink, it's delicious. My husband frequently gets pizza from here. I usually get something like a veggie pizza or a white pizza and it's all fantastic. But tonight we ate at the restaurant. The restaurant side is super cute, cozy, and romantic. I got the chicken penne ala vodka and my husband the rigatoni. Well, I guess I may be the odd man out on our group's experience at Marisa's place. As part of a group of nine, so far the reviews are coming in higher than I would prefer to award. Let's start with where I agree with them. Their house-made Mozzarella Sticks were definitely excellent. Even though I prefer mine with Melba sauce, I recognize that if the breading is going to have oregano and other herbs mixed in you need to skip the Melba and go with a red sauce. Marisa's serves their Mozzarella Sticks with a very good marinara that goes perfectly with their sticks. The Cannoli are also a highlight here, especially the seasonal ones made with peppermint. They must fill the shells to order because they are so crisp. Even their regular cannoli with chocolate chips are worth saving room for. I also want to take the opportunity to point out how good our service was. We were not the only large party there. A birthday party for a four-year-old was ongoing when we arrived and it took up one whole side of the dining room with their twenty-five-plus people of all ages. The woman overseeing the bar area, which was also busy, apparently was also responsible for waiting on our group and I saw her numerous times attending to the birthday party. She never lost her cool and we never wanted for service and attention. I did observe another woman who occasionally appeared to clear some plates and deliver the candle-lit birthday cake, but I couldn't help to admire how composed our server was. As for the rest of our food, nothing really stood out to me that would make me want to rush back. The wings were about average, the calamari was very slightly overcooked (although served with that good marinara sauce), and the pizza did not do anything special for me. I thought the pizza dough was lacking in flavor and heavier than I would have expected considering its reasonable thinness. The end crusts were dry and chewy, not in a good way. The dough and the crust are the heart of the pizza for me, so even though the toppings we chose for our three pizzas were acceptable, I felt, overall, I could not rave about their pizza. Craft beer selections on draft are limited, so most of our party ended up choosing a Sierra Nevada Haze IPA. read more

Well for starters, you must get the mozzarella sticks - you must. We dined in, which is a different experience as opposed to grabbing a slice. I need to come back to try the slices in the near future. Everything here was good, and definitely home made. We stuck with some tavern favorites for our meals, but the pasta dishes coming out looked pretty stellar as well. Starting with the Mozzarella Sticks, wow. These are home made, crispy, flavorful, top notch. Most places just serve the frozen variety, so these are a huge stand out. The calamari was also good, and went fast! The marinara served with both was delightful. The wings were surprisingly good, but a little inconsistent. The medium were spicier than the hot, because they were sauced more heavily, and the hot wings were the crispiest, because they barely had sauce on them. The garlic parm wings were nice and crispy too. The pizza was good, but I think their slices would be better. Everything was a little heavily topped. My favorite was the plain cheese, but I am not a topping lover. The sauce and crust was good, but it was a thicker style pie, not really NYC style like you will see next door. Still good, just being picky. Save room for cannolis - trust me. Freshly filled, crispy, delicious. It was a great night, with great people. The pizza is so good here. It's just the hours that are soooo weird! First of all, A PIZZA PLACE THATS CLOSED ON SUNDAY!! Super Bowl Sunday is probably the biggest pizza and wings day of the year but Marisas for some reason decides to be closed! Then they're open from 4-9 on some days so getting pizza for lunch isn't happening. As for the food. Nice thin crust just like I love. Reminds me of NYC. Lots of good flavor in the sauce too. I got extra cheese and that wasn't the best idea for such a thin crust because the pizza was falling apart. Wings have a good flavor to them but it's probably just Red Hot. Having tried food from this dump before, my buddy convinced me to try it again on Derby Day. He assured me my initial impression was wrong. I got news...it wasn't. First, as usual the pizza had to be ordered in advance. Now this is pizza we're talking about so that alone lets me know all I need to know about this place. He was told to pick it up at 4:40. Not 4:20. Not 4:30. 4:40. This obnoxious directive was compounded when, arriving at the appointed time, we waited another half hour for a single pizza and some wings. Let me tell you, the food was not worth the wait. Now for the pizza. My first bite made me wonder if this slop wasn't made at Jiffy Lube instead of a pizza oven because it had more grease than the bearings on a semi tractor trailer. The crust, if you can call it that, was a slimy, doughy mess saturated with the aforementioned grease. The pizza was so underdone I hesitated to eat the sausage for fear of catching a dose of trichinosis. The sauce (I'm thinking Ragu from the jar) along with the undercooked topping, slid off the soggy crust which is just as well because you wouldn't want to eat it anyway. Given the attitude of management (order ahead, arrive when told, "we're closed on Sunday") you'd expect at least something edible. When a glob of this glop slid off on the floor the dog ran over, took a sniff, and walked away. He was the wisest one in the room. Then there's the wings. With my first bite into these clearly once frozen wings from Price Chopper, I could only think that someone needs to tell the royalty running this dive that you are suppose to change your frier grease more than every three months. Message to owners: You do understand they feed pigs with old frier grease right? All I can say is after eating just a little of this garbage (I wasn't as smart as the dog) I went to the medicine cabinet for a dose of Imodium. The long and the short of it is, if you want to be treated like you're being done a favor by a pizza parlor making you a pizza, and don't care if you overpay for swill then this is your place. If you want edible pizza, then go someplace, anyplace else because there's plenty of pizza out there. Hopefully Costco will open soon for some really good pizza. Given Costco will be down the road from this slop joint, I suspect very soon instead of having to order ahead and arrive at the appointed time, this place will be begging people to buy a pie. This place is suffering from an identity crisis. I came here for a slice of pizza and some wings on a Saturday afternoon. The right door was broken, so I entered by the left door. I walked into a dark bar with loud club music blaring. I thought I was lost... is this a pizzeria? Apparently, the answer is yes. Per the friendly bar tender, last June they expanded into a restaurant next door. Though the menu features only basic Italian dishes (spaghetti, lasagna, meatballs, eggplant, etc.) they seemingly are trying to pull off fine dining. There are dark wood tables, etched Italian glass decorations on doors, and a wine list with bottles as high as $60. But the food isn't fine dining. The bartender told me that they were going for a "NYC mood" so they intentionally kept it dark (neon around the bottom of the bar), loud (so you couldn't hear much else), and crammed tables. Had I closed my eyes, I could have been in the middle of A Night at The Roxbury! But, I came for the pizza and wings. They had six or so pizzas available by the slice to go, but if you wanted a full pizza you had to sit in the restaurant. I wanted wings, which came off the menu so to the dining room I went. I ordered medium Buffalo wings and a slice of sausage pizza. The pizza came out immediately, and the wings followed 22 minutes later. The pizza was fantastic. 6-stars, if that were possible. It is likely the best slice of pizza I have had in the Albany area. The crust was perfect and crisp and burnished on the bottom, the cheese was stretchy and not overly abundant, and the sauce was ever so fresh with a sharp acid tang. The sliced sausage was MIA in flavor but there was plenty on the pizza. In essence, it was the perfect, foldable, NYC slice. The wings were just okay. They were cooked crispy to the point of being almost dry, and they were sauced on the plate. Thus, some wings had little to no sauce. That wasn't a bad thing here, as their "Buffalo" sauce tasted nothing like real Frank's Hot sauce and it was so thick it clung to the angled sides of the plate. It looked like orange pudding. I got a lemon-pistachio cannoli to go, and it was pretty good. A nice crisp shell held the thick lemon filling with hints of pistachio flavoring and chunks of nuts. I enjoyed it though it was a bit sweet. At $5 though it wasn't cheap. In sum, when I want pizza and wings I don't want to find myself in a dark restaurant struggling to hear my friends over the din of loud club music. I want a counter or perhaps a table (maybe dirty with crumbs or having a slight rock), enough light so I can see what I am eating, and the Rat Pack in the background. I don't want this. Marisa's is the best pizza we've had in years, including the last 10 years we were in Brooklyn. Granted, 2 of those years were pandemic years, and we just didn't go out, and we never went back to Totonno's after it burned down, and we gave up on di Fara's when it became such a hipster lawn-chair tourist production, but our neighborhood spots were good. Two of them were, anyway (we also stopped going to Beverly after the crust fiasco). Anyway, Marisa's is heaven, full stop. I dream of the day we feel secure going out to a sit-down-inside place and trying everything else on the menu. Their crust is magnificent, their sauce is spectacular, and the topping ingredients are truly lovely. But you do have to call early to get the take-out slot you want; no crying and whinging that you had to wait two hours for your pizza. It's also not cheap, so no complaining about that. Read the instructions on the website, then respect the owners enough to do as they say. Do it. Do it now. Call them. They're only open 4 days a week, and we're lucky to get them that much. Technically, this is Guilderland, but it's still in Albany county. So if you want to call it the best pizza in Albany, I'm with you. It is. Maybe it's not the best pizza in the region. It really depends on the day, and on the pie. This is what happens when a product is made by hand, it's a variable product. And I'm okay with that. Most recently, I came in for a slice. I perused the pies and found one that looked appealing. As they were putting it in the oven to warm it up and make that bottom crust super crisp, I asked what was on the thing anyway. They had a good laugh at that. The thing is that when you trust a pizza shop, you don't really need to know what's on it to know that it will be good. This slice was from a white pie. It had ricotta on the bottom, and was topped with eggplant, roasted red peppers, kalamata olives, fresh mushrooms, sauteed onions, mozzarella, torn basil and a bit of balsamic. Man, it was delicious. Sweet, savory, juicy, salty, cheesy, earthy, rich, sharp, acidic, crunchy, and creamy. It had everything going on. Of course, I paid for the pleasure. That one slice set me back a bit over $4, but it was a meal in a slice. It's very clear that this shop takes pride in what they do. So do them the favor of eating the pizza at the shop. Sure, there are only a few small tables, but good pizza should be spared the death sentence of those dreaded cardboard boxes. read more

This is my go-to neighborhood pizza place and I'm so glad because their food is delicious. I won't waste too much on how good the food is because the other reviews convey that just fine. COVID is new though and everyone is working within the strict guidelines to still serve its patrons. As of this writing, there are obvious changes to the ordering process and hours. To start, they're only open Wednesday through Saturday. I called in my order and was given a time slot like most places. When I arrived, I waited in my car until my name showed up on a monitor in the front window (1 person at a time) at which time you're allowed inside. They have a table set up with the credit card machine and Purell. They will get your order, charge your card and you're good to go. As I was leaving, they were already cleaning the machine and table. Service is gold star as usual and now with safety precautions being followed as best as they can, I feel VERY comfortable ordering during these uncertain times. read more

I decided to test Daniel's claim of Marisa's being the best pizza in Albany; I concur. Not only was the pizza delicious with a perfect crust and sauce/cheese/dough ratios, but they were generous with the toppings, the prices were reasonable, and the service was top notch. They take credit cards, there are a couple small tables to eat in, and amazingly even the takeout pizza doesn't get soggy. After close to half an hour in the box, the crust still had a nice crunch to it. This might be my go-to pizza shop going forward. They even have ample parking. read more

The pizza is very good!!! However the whole pickup process is just plain nuts. Very inefficient. I called on a Saturday and was told 2 hours for a "pickup slot". So 730pm was our time and we arrived at 7:15 and sat in an empty parking lot til 7:45, and then went in to find out my pizza was sitting on top of the oven. They forgot to let me know it was ready. Really!? Empty lot, cooks barely working and told 2 hours for the 7:30 slot in the first place. How ridiculous. Whomever designed this process really should re-examine it. read more

Ordered a large pizza at Marisa's Place this evening --it looked like a medium size. Last time I will be buying a pizza from here. I'll go somewhere else for a large pizza. Not worth the money. Saw the 4 stars and thought, heck yes! Pizza places are hard to come by, especially ones that really offer a nice pie with awesome sauce, topping, dough, etc. I ordered the vegetable pizza. The pizza itself looked amazing and I couldn't wait to inhale 4 slices. But upon chowing down on my first slice, I knew this style of pizza wasn't for me. The bottom of the pizza felt rubbery when you bit into it and there was no real flavor from the toppings/sauce. They do average 4 stars so obviously people like their pizza but in my opinion it did not deserve it mainly because of their dough. Every bite felt rubbery and I had to tear off my bite instead of just biting through it...make sense? Definitely worth a try if you have not had it, but I think there are better places. read more
