For my drink, I ordered one of the red blends and it was very good for sipping along side a board of charcuterie and cheese My small group opted for the "pick three" option for a board. We ordered the manchego, smoked duck breast, and the pâté. It was a superb plate. The manchego was salty and funky, offered with dried apricots. The pate was rich and fatty, offered with whole grain mustard, pickled onions and cornichons. The smoked duck was offered with a blueberry-mustard compote. Also all accompanied with some nice fresh bread. Each flavor served a purposed and made for several tasty bites that piqued my interest. For a pre-dinner stop, I was very impressed. Also, sad to see this location absolutely empty on a Saturday evening. Ambiance- indoors is dimly lit and romantic which makes it a great atmosphere for an intimate date. The back is a converted outdoor setup which is perfect during the winter because it is well insulated yet feels outdoors. Meatballs and garlic bread: delicious and strong flavors. Small portion though. 3 Cheeses and 3 Meats: I enjoyed the ingredients. This went very well with the wines we ordered. White Bean Hummus: fresh ingredients and nice finger food Prosciutto and Provolone Stuffed Peppers: We really disliked this dish. It was a bit odd. I love the fact that they restore and reuse historical pieces in the design. We popped in on a sweltering summer night recently to indulge in their Tuesday special. I had a delicious Riesling to sip alongside my incredible build your own smashburger, the toppi g choices were amazing. I settled on pickled onions, bacon, cheddar, and a regular bun. My husband chose a gluten-free bun, and the American, which is made with American cheese, tomato, ketchup, and he added carmelized onions. We shared an order of their loaded tots, which were to die for. The owner, Vic, was there to greet people and help out , he is always very friendly and warm. His Sommelier/Bar Tender is very knowledgeable and helpful when deciding what type of wine or cocktail you should choose. Lucas Confectionery is absolutely adorable. I was introduced to Lucas while attending a wine tasting that was hosted within the bar. From the moment we approached the bar, I knew I would love everything about the space. I couldn't get over the exposed brick and the wood paneling throughout the bar. Lucas doesn't have a lot of sitting inside but it's very spacious. The bar can easily hold a large number of people that opt to stand. Lucas is not a place that would visit for a sit down meal because the sitting isn't conducive to a sit down dinner. Lucas does have outdoor sitting on the back patio that has ample tables. Since it was just starting to warm up when I visited Lucas, the outdoor patio didn't have too many people outside but I could easily see the place getting very busy on a warm summer night. After visiting Lucas, I see this place a great place to host an larger social event such as a networking event or company holiday party. read more

This will definitely be the new "hot spot" in Troy. We arrived shortly after they opened on a Thursday evening and by the time we left, around 7 pm, the place was just about full. During the recent Victorian Stroll event there was a line of people waiting to get in. The restoration of the interior speaks welcoming to you as you enter. The staff are warm, friendly, and knowledgeable. The carafe of water brought to our table was infused with the flavor of cucumber and some other flavors that I don't recall. It was very refreshing. The wine bar is the first in the area with wine on draft. Being a wine bar the only beer is in bottles, but there are at least some good craft beers available. We started with a couple of glasses of wine, a Pier 41 Red Blend from Red Hook Winery in New York ($12) and a Vinha do Mouro from Quinta do Mouro in Portugal ($11). Both were nice, but the one from Portugal was really nice. From the Small Plates section of the menu we ordered the Kalamata Olive Tapenade ($4.50). I'm not a tapenade fan but my wife is. She said it was delicious. I tried it and found that I agreed with her. It was certainly the best tasting tapenade I'd ever had. The Cheese & Charcuterie menu offers four choices - a selection of 1 item for $5; 3 items for $12; 5 items for $20; and our choice of the Monger's Choice ($23) - a selection of cheeses & charcuterie of the kitchen's choice along with suggested appropriate pairings. Our Monger's Choice ended up including 4 cheeses, 4 meats, a mix of olives, Marcona almonds, little pickles, whole grain mustard, honey, and at least three other items that I don't recall. The recommended pairings with each cheese were wonderful. The flavors just burst in your mouth. The cheeses on our slate were Shushan Snow, Red Hawk, Pleasant Ridge Reserve, and Shaker Blue. The charcuteries were Spicy Capicola, Applewood Smoked Magret Duck Breast, Bresaola, and Duck Salami. Service was excellent. Several servers and the owner stopped by occasionally to check on us and to answer any questions. They were all very knowledgeable. Lucas Confectionary is located in downtown Troy. It's a very spacious venue, with a semi outdoor seating area. The vibe is casual, and the hostess tells me I may seat myself, I choose to eat in the garden. It's a lovely day outside. I place my order, the house bread as an appetizer, with a cheese pizza as my entree. Seems like a lot of bread, but the menu isn't very extensive. I don't count that against them as the main focus of this restaurant is the wine selection. My house bread arrives, and it is amazing! Perfectly crusty outside, warm and soft inside, served with a creamed butter, with braised garlic and crispy rosemary. It's fantastic. I move on to the pizza which has now arrived. It looks like it will be just as good as the bread, sadly it's not. The pizza tastes really cheap and basic. The cheese is rubbery. I was expecting the pizza to be way more flavourful. I'm disappointed. This restaurant gives me the communal feeling of a tapas place, and the portions are very generous. It's a great place to go for drinks with friends, or happy hour with coworkers. I'm not a fan of the dog friendly policy here, however if that's your thing you'll likely enjoy. Overall, I would visit again, I will just stick to the bread and wine next time. I'm not a huge wine person, so really nice $14 glasses of natural wine -- the main attraction here -- are generally wasted on me. I DO love tinned fish, but my somewhat frugal heart balks a bit at the prospect of spending $10 for what's essentially gussied-up sardines on toast. Enter: the happy hour. It's every day they're open from 4:00-6:00, and features their (very tasty!) house wine for $8 a glass and 50% off of all of the tinned fish. For how pretty the space is (very early-2010s industrial chic, but the beautiful bones of the building and nice mood lighting means that it's way more welcoming than a lot of its similarly subway-tiled cousins) that makes it, in my opinion, one of the nicest happy hour deals around. Eh, I don't feel the love here like many others do. When I walked in I felt like they were trying to hard with the "ambiance", it was way too dark, I couldn't see the menu and I have very good vision so we can't blame that on my old ass! Menu choices where minimal, which is fine but if you're really hungry you may want to go elsewhere to start. No one came to our table so we all went to the bar to order, there were 4 of us. It was a ridiculously slow process. We ended up just having a glass of wine (which my wine was very good, selection was decent) and a sweet treat. I would go back if I was invited to join friends but I don't see myself suggesting a return anytime soon. Maybe it's just me, just wasn't feeling it. That said, I always suggest trying things for yourself (unless I have a horrendous experience, in that case I'll warn you), check it out and see what you think. read more

I had an interesting experience here to say the least my first time out. We arrived on a Saturday night around 9 PM and the place was relatively unoccupied and boasted an amazing ambience. Chic decor, romantic lighting, and hip music at just the right volume greet you. There was no hostess or signage indicating the seating policy so after an awkward moment we sat ourselves and here is where things went downhill. The curated wine list and small bites are super appetizing but several items are re in foreign language, etc. Our server failed to materialize for 15-20 minutes and offered no water or insight into the menu choices. When our hummus finally arrived, the accompanying bread was very stale and our waiter seemed indifferent to this news when he finally appeared a half hour after dropping the food off. Our wine choice (a bottle of rose) was fantastic and a high note in an otherwise awkward experience with the service and kitchen. We originally intended to eat dinner but found the service so excruciating we found another option for supper and aborted mission. I hope this was an off night and we will have better luck next time read more

I wanted my 500th review to be something special. The Lucas Confectionery is a form of madness. A man and his wife buy a run down building in a run down city. The guy spends a year pulling down drywall to expose brick, long forgotten windows, and even a skylight. Then he fills it with reclaimed bits of this once great town, including the tabletops which are made from marble that hung on the walls of an adjacent building. Even their espresso machine was rescued from the basement of the owner's favorite local Italian restaurant. After he figured out how to restore it and bring it back to life, he had the good folks from Blue Bottle Coffee come up and train the staff how to make amazing coffee. It has a Brooklyn sensibility using Troy ingredients, and it succeeds at being a third space. You can do whatever you want at the Confectionery. Sip coffee and hang out on your laptop? Sure. Have some cheese and wine before dinner? No problem. Come for a civilized dinner of great meats and cheeses? It's on the menu. A night out on the town with round after round of drinks? You bet. Stop in for a bite of something sweet to close out the night? Absolutely. Is the Confectionery perfect? Not quite. If it weren't one of my favorite places in the Capital Region, I would give them four stars. However that's for pretty nitpicky stuff. Still, it's the nitpicky stuff that truly separate the best from the rest of the pack. You know, the little things like polished glassware that sparkles without any unsightly spots, and drinks served at perfect temperatures. But here, there is no rest of the pack. And that's okay. For a region of this size it's amazing we have a place like the Confectionery at all. I'm thrilled people have found it as delightful as I do, and continue to flock to this marvelous spot. At the same time, I'm dismayed that it's so crowded all the time. You'll find me there early in the week, or maybe on a Friday morning when they open early for coffee. On the weekend? That's when it gets crowded. Most people don't seem to mind, but I think the place is at its best when I can have it all to myself. I guess I'm selfish that way. read more

A guaranteed hit. Troy is over-run with bars with more beer taps than a yellow lab bitch has teats. So finally somebody wakes up and says, "gee, maybe I should do something different." In this case, the somebody is Vic Christopher and his lovely wife Heather, and they have done something not only different, but passionately so. What we have here is a wine bar with enough style and spunk to be a smash hit on the lower east side of NYC. Drop it in Troy, for God's sake, and it's so good you fear the locals won't know what to do with it. But fear not, on tonight's grand opening, the place is completely packed, the wine is flowing fast as the two lone Square-equipped iPads can ring the sales, and EVERYBODY is smiling and cheerful. I predict more than the usual percentage of patrons will go home and make babies tonight. It's THAT kind of smiling. I'll leave it to future reviews to extol the virtues of the wine list and menu, to wax eloquent about the venerable antique espresso machine, and the depth of Vic's attention to the minutest detail in decor, not to mention his obsession with all things historical Troy. For now, I'm calling this a monster success that is going to attract a more age-diverse clientele than the typical Troy brew pub. I think it's got legs for the long run. I walked into Lucas to find a beautifully decorated space. Word on the street is that these folks helped revitalize Troy. It was my first visit and I was super impressed by the adorable walkable neighborhood. Who knew! Per the recommendation of Daniel B, I went for wine and cheese for my afternoon work session. A glass of wine will do a body good for some productivity after a long drive. I opted for the Vino Verde. The wine was mineral-y, light with a hint of sweetness to balance it out. I paired it with a light snack - their charcuterie board - 3 for $13. Cremont, chorizo, and prosciutto. Fun fact: house-cured meats! Infinitely more delicious. The cremont was a creamy Brie-like textured cheese, but lighter in flavor. None of those things logically paired well together but I wanted to sample each of them. Go for the chorizo! I also did a little poking around as I went back to the bathroom to find a beautiful back patio with greenery woven through the open beams, which added to the romantic, bright and airy space. The walls are stocked with large glass jars of sweets - caramels, candy corn, lollipops... all are just out of reach but are, in fact, available for purchase. There is also a full chalk board (on the left when you enter, easy to miss) of desserts for sale. I didn't get to try any of the confections, but I had two wines which were both superb. Our waiter was a standout guy. He listened to what we liked and gave us recommendations. Actually, he told us exactly what we would want. We didn't question him and without fault he gave us quality drinks and decent prices. He also stayed much past closed to care for us. I'm tired of great wine and cocktail bars that are too small with too few bartenders and servers for the amount of interest. There was a scene there which gave me a glimpse of this lovely place. So what do I do, I turn to trusted google to find more information about it. It must have been a year ago or so when I watched it on Netflix. It always had lingered in my mind from then on. I had a great time with my friend here however there was a delay in our order. But, nevertheless our waiter/bartender redeemed himself so much that I am hesitant to give a 4 star instead of 5. Even apologizing with treats to compensate. If I've got friends visiting from out of town then at some point you'll probably find us at Lucas Confectionery because I love showing off this little business. I keep coming back here because of the ambiance. Day or night, it's always a unique spot where I find it easy to relax, chat with friends, and sip some delightful wine. There's a beautiful amount of exposed wood and brick, Edison light bulbs strung up thoughtfully, vintage gold mirrors, Troy themed details and reminders of the confectionery that once stood like glass bowls filled with sugary goodies. The patio is a gorgeous area with a fountain and a retractable roof. All this is super charming. Their website has some great pictures so you don't have to take my word for it. I've only ever ordered wine and the Monger's choice. I've never been disappointed with these fancy finger foods. They're perfect for sampling and splitting between people. One thing that does bother me is the multiple times on Friday and Saturday nights when I've awkwardly waited for the host to acknowledge my existence after I've entered the wine bar. Sigh. I have been to the Confectionery several times in the past 1.5 years that I have been living in the Capital Region. I'm always partial to cheese and meat, which are excellent here! I have also enjoyed their selection of wine and beer, and the servers are always helpful in selecting a good drink. I have also taken part in their grilled cheese night, which was a great price for fancy grilled cheese :). My go-to is always the Monger's Choice though. It's a great deal ($26) if you split it with two other pals, and it's pretty much never a disappointment. I don't really know how you can ever go wrong here. It's a super romantic atmosphere but also group-friendly. I love it when we get seated out in the back patio, which is open even in the winter! A drink can only be as good as its equipment and its equipment used as well as its operator. The Confectionary knows its machines. They know the grind they need to pull that perfect shot. They have their dairy down. They know. And you will too. Sit back and relax in the comfortable aesthetic of personal intimacy. Bring a good book, your laptop, or a copy of The Times. Are you a wine or beer person? A curated selection of wine by the glass is touted and what the Confectionary is best known for. Tell them your mood and they match that with a glass. Always changing and always interesting, you need to come weekly. Their beer selection has slowly grown and is blissful; the amazing drafts and bottle selection is unquenching. Yesterday evening, two colleagues hosted me at LC in celebration of my play's closing night. I ordered a house white and the cheese charcuterie. I was cutting into the blue cheese and spotted a hair! It was positively revolting. I notified the bartender who apologized but stated "This has never happened before." I wrote to restaurant today who reiterated the remarks.
