What a beautiful restaurant! Did you ever have a long day and want to drink a big glass of red wine with dinner? The Scarlet Knife put a check in all the boxes. I walked in with no reservations. I noticed the space is very large with multiple dining rooms. I'm tired, I asked for a table close to the open kitchen. Once seated, I'm given a large, leather menu. There are lots of great entree choices but after I review all the selections, I'm going with the SK Bistro Burger. The entree also has a wine pairing suggestion, a Cabernet Sauvignon. It's like they read my mind, I'm sold! I'm starting to read about the restaurant, they have a large wine cellar and was recognized by Wine Spectator with an award for excellence. My bistro burger arrives, I can see this is a well crafted burger. From the pretzel bun to the thick burger patty, Scarlet Knife served me a great meal that I would typically order at The Capital Grill. My only issue, the onion straws were cold. I scraped them off and continued with my meal. I'm just passing thru town, Scarlet Knife was a fantastic spot to dine and have a generous pour of award winning Cabernet Sauvignon. read more

Scarlet Kitchen has been on our must try list and I was happy to find they had availability for Easter brunch and were serving their typical brunch menu. We arrived early and were seated promptly; water was poured before we even had napkins on laps. This surprised me, as reviews indicated that service could be slow and this was a holiday. But this started a constant service of someone checking in on us every 2-3 minutes (I am prone to exaggeration for a good story, but I assure you this was true. I kept checking my watch to confirm). We put in an appetizer order (deviled eggs) that was served within a minute or two. These were well seasoned and tasty, ice cold from the refrigerator. It's not that they didn't taste fresh, but they were served to us so quickly that I know that they were prepared well in advance and only the warm pork belly was recently prepped. Our meals were served as the appetizer was finished (I was still chewing). At this point, we were 10 minutes into our seating. Our meals included steak and eggs, which I incorrectly assumed would require a little bit more time. Not true! Our plates arrived, piping hot and tasty enough...but boy did we feel rushed. Our server, the manager, bussers, and other attendants stopped by our table every few minutes. I recognize this was a holiday, but there was not a steady stream of people coming through the doors and plenty of open tables were available. Our conversation was repeatedly interrupted with these check-ins and we all took great care to eat the meal as slowly as possibly to stretch things out. At this point we were on track to be out the door in 30 minutes. As a table we made a decision to order dessert and we were able to savor and dawdle long enough to get us to one hour. $180 later, we finished our Easter visit out in the parking lot where no one was pushing us out. (I will note that several families arrived after us and completed their meals in 30ish minutes. What's special about brunch when it's that rushed?) I wish I could review the food better, but my taste buds hardly had time to register the experience. Entrees were hot but clearly prepared well in advance and kept at the ready under heat lamps or in warming ovens. The dessert was cold and sweet as appropriate, but had that prepped yesterday feel to it. This is not what I expect from a restaurant that markets itself as a fresh farm to table establishment. My wife and I were in search of an upscale restaurant for an anniversary dinner. The Scarlet Knife was one of the restaurants most recommended. We finally got to eat here this weekend, and it did not disappoint. First, the ambience of the room is exceptional. Modern, sleek, a hint of wood. Gorgeous bar. A second bar area facing the open kitchen, and the lighting is perfect for a quiet dinner. We were immediately brought to our table. Then, after our server, Danielle, took our drink order the host stopped by our table to tell us we had made two reservations. She had fixed the issue with the service, and we did not have to worry. We had both set up a reservation and it was kind of them to fix that for us. My wife had one of their craft cocktails. It was amazing. She loved it. I had a basic gin martini with a blue cheese stuffed olive. Also, on point. She chose filet tips, and I chose the wild boar special. Both were amazing! It was my first experience with wild boar. It was exceptional. It came with a lovely raspberry sauce, sweet potato puree, and rainbow carrots. We had concert tickets, so we missed dessert, but it looked amazing. When checking out I accidentally left my credit card behind. Within an hour they had called both me and my partner to let us know. We checked the website and realized they did brunch the next day. We enjoyed our meal so much we made a reservation for the next morning. The brunch was spectacular, too. We loved our experience with these guys, you would, too. read more

The restaurant looks amazing and is extremely well appointed. If looks were the only factor this restaurant would be a five star. I was really looking forward to coming here for brunch based on some of the dishes that were being featured and some of the hype we read online. I hate to say that the hype was more than the delivery. The service was slow from the start. Over 10 minutes to get our drinks and then we were informed 15 minutes later that the kitchen was out of mushrooms so we had to make a substitution on our flatbread. I noticed that 2 other tables were seated long after us and after we were informed of no mushrooms but they placed their order and they were informed 5 or 10 minutes later that the kitchen had "just run out of mushrooms " so I call shenanigans on the actual "just run out of mushrooms " Anyhow, we received our order of brunch flatbread, brûlée French toast and a side of Thick cut Bbq bacon. The food looked good and was ok, I didn't like the fact the French toast was one large piece of bread 3 inches thick and not cut, but the thick cut bacon was paper thin and almost burnt. I really wanted to like this restaurant and I really don't because of the food. I have experienced far more delicious meals here in the Albany area that were the same price range but when we left we felt the value was not worth the price. we arrived on a Friday evening at 6pm with reservations for 6 people for my birthday. My sister had called earlier in the week twice and left a message, asking what to do regarding bringing their own cake to the restaurant. Nobody called back. She simply wanted to know policy. After we were seated, my niece asked what to do with my birthday cake that she brought. The waitress said she'll be right back. The next thing that happened was unexpected and very upsetting. The head chef came out and confronted my niece rudely saying that we can't have our dessert because they have a pastry chef and we charge $35. They didn't understand that we had called twice and left messages requesting information about bringing in a cake and no one had the courtesy to ever call us back. He insulted her and spoke in a condescending manner to get and made a scene, though she was polite and calm. We decided to leave and we had a great time at Saki instead. Went to the Scarlet Knife tonight for the first time for dinner. First I want to say the place was elegant, the design and the layout was way ahead of what we have locally. It lets you sit at a bar and watch your food be prepared or you can sit at booths or high top tables. Looked like they also offered a separate dinning area which looked busy. The service was right on and food was prepared perfectly. I was surprised that some of the same side dishes were less expensive than some of the local places. We loved our birthday brunch on a cold, wet Sunday. Was it pricy? Yes! Was it worth it? Also yes! We started with some cocktails. My Bellini was refreshing if not extraordinary. I had the Crab Hash and it had the real crab taste that is so different from Surimi. The potatoes and hollandaise sauce complemented it well. My son had Lobster Scrambled Eggs. My husbands's Porchetta Surprise was a blend of thinly sliced porchetta, creamed leeks, spinach and sourdough. The Eggs Benedict was a classic and well made here. Everything tasted fresh and the poached eggs were cooked perfectly. Since we were celebrating a birthday we decided to go to the dessert room afterwards. We had it to ourselves. The desserts are over the top decadent and delicious. The Golden Ticket had one of my favorite flavor combinations: hazelnut and chocolate. Emerald Eruption is a mix of pistachio and chocolate with chocolate lava cake. My son had the Sunlit Berry Brulee a lemon blueberry mix that was rich with cream. Service was good throughout. We went to Scarlet knife to celebrate my son's graduation this week. I had never heard of this place, but a friend recommended strongly that we give it a try and it did not disappoint! The location at first was a little surprising, but having found some amazing restaurants in similar settings before we walked right in and were immediately greeted by the staff and taken to our seats. The drink menu was perfectly suitable for what we were looking for on an early summer evening. Small plates were absolutely delicious! We ordered the truffled potatoes which melted in your mouth, quite literally, as well a the filet bites which came accompanied with this beautiful cream. Entrées were likewise plentiful, despite the higher price tag, and were very satisfying. The dessert experience requires an entirely new paragraph. When we found out, they offered special desserts in their dessert room. We were all in! This room has a more intimate feel with little alcoves for the guests to more quietly enjoy dessert together. My daughter enjoyed the golden ticket while the rest of us went for James and the giant peach which is prepared table side with a bourbon peach flambé. Ok- found this beautiful place on yelp - and decided to try it out since I was in town for a few days- alright- gotta say the first impression wasn't great. I sat down at the bar and had to wait almost 10 minutes for one of three employees to even acknowledge me. I literally was ready to walk out when I was finally acknowledged - that's frustrating. I quickly ordered a local IPA, a charcuterie board as well as a bowl of asparagus soup - to be fair, the charcuterie board came very quickly. Cheese was local, fresh, and plentiful. Oh, did I mention? Delicious! The same was true of the asparagus soup. Needless to say, it was a nice meal. But the true demerits were simply not being acknowledged for such a long time once I sat at the bar. When three employees walk past you at the bar and not one acknowledges you? Not a good sign. I'm not a brunch person, so don't judge this review as being by someone who knows from where they speak. I typically sleep late and don't have a huge appetite when brunch is usually being served. A bowl of cereal is adequate around noon to start my day. Two days prior to experiencing brunch at the Scarlet Knife I had a late morning appointment that offered me the opportunity to have my first meal of the day at 1 PM at a well respected diner that I last enjoyed nine years earlier. Since I ordered a breakfast meal at that diner, it might be interesting to contrast it with our 1 PM brunch at the Scarlet Knife. Among the most notable differences were the SK's atmosphere, architecture, live music, portion sizes, and prices. The totally open kitchen, modern light fixtures, well-spaced tables, and high ceiling, help to contribute to a fine dining experience. The only negative in my opinion is the slight echo due to the lack of sound absorbing material. While the restaurant was only about 10% filled while we were there, I'd anticipate the noise level to be annoyingly high when they approach full capacity. My wife started with a Kir Royale ($15) while I had my first cup of an apparently bottomless Sumatran coffee ($4). We also ordered a bottle of Saratoga Still Water ($8). The menu had a number of interestingly described dishes causing each of us to have a difficult time making a final decision. My wife ordered the Crème Brulee French Toast ($16) with house-made cinnamon swirl bread, Vermont maple syrup, caramelized sugar crust, and raspberry crème fraiche. We both agreed it was delicious and would have liked it even more if the bread had been soaked longer before cooking. I decided to have the Jumbo Lump Crab Hash ($24) with shallots, scallions, poached egg, hollandaise, and home fries. I did not experience much crab flavor, but it was still tasty, and the egg was cooked perfectly with a yoke that ran over the home fries, some of which were nice and crispy. Neither one of us left feeling as if we had overstuffed ourselves like we felt when we left that diner two days earlier. But we did feel adequately satisfied to last until a light dinner later that evening. Service from Peyton was friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. I came here today with my son for Mother's Day brunch. The eggs beni was awful! It had no flavor and came out iced cold. The waitress immediately took it back to be reheated in the oven, but upon its return, it was still only luke warm at best. I love eggs beni, but this had zero flavor. My son ordered over-easy eggs and a steak medium-rare. Instead he received fried eggs (cold) and an over-cooked steak (extremely well- done). We both agreed that our meals were very bland and unfortunately, there was no salt or pepper to be found. The golden ticket dessert sounded amazing, but ended up being an overpriced snickers bar with a tiny scoop of ice cream on the side. Very disappointing experience to say the least, and it truly pains me to give the Scarlet Knife such a bad review as I used to be in the food and beverage industry and understand that the were extremely busy today. I will say that our waitress was amazing, and the overall ambiance of the restaurant was nice, but next year we'll be saving $130 (not including the tip) and we'll just be eating at Denny's. Went here for a group event recently. The person who described this restaurant in their review as "Cheesecake Factory cosplaying as fine dining" was spot on. My first impression arriving was, "wait a minute, isn't this the old K-Mart that they turned into a strip mall?" Yes, yes it was. This immediately dampened the "fine dining" feel as I walked up from the enormous parking lot. Clearly, this can't be changed now but it does take away from the experience. ​ The design of the restaurant overall reminds me of a hotel lobby. The event room has a "gallery wall" filled with art that is either generic Marshall's wall decor, or if actually from local artists, is totally uncredited and unlabeled. Not sure which is worse - calling a room filled with fake art a "gallery" or failing to give credit to artists. I had to take away points for this because it really bothered me. The "gallery room" has several giant vents/fans on the ceiling that blew cold air on us for the full hour of our meal. I spent the meal with my coat on and woke up with a cold the next day. The service was excellent. The hostess and wait staff were attentive and prompt. As for the food, let's start with the positives: nicely plated, pretty to look at, and arrived at the right temperature. Everyone's food was consistent which is not an easy feat with a large group. The courses were paced well. The negatives? To my taste, the food was completely bland and uninteresting. There was nothing that stood out as exceptional or worthy of the high price tag. There were few items on the menu that I couldn't have made myself at home for a lower cost and a better eating experience. Could have been seasoned and spiced better. To my mind, "fine dining" means that setting, and food are all absolutely top notch. I would say only one of those three (service) made the cut. ​If the prices were lower, I might recommend this restaurant for group events and larger parties since the service is so well done. I had been here once before during their opening and I enjoyed it then, but WOW has it improved recently. It's really a hidden gem. Top notch food. T - my bartender had impeccable service and he was even training a young man on hospitality details that I really Appreciated. He also did so with respect and explaining "the why". I meant to take photos of my food, but it didn't last long enough. The new Burger on their menu was serious.... I'm a burger guy. It had a lot going on but the big beefy char flavor was so damn good! Hard to put into words unless you've eaten a lot of good quality beef before - the real ones will know what I'm talking about. I did a take a phew photos of their drinks and drink list which were insanely good. Like seriously balanced, refreshing with top quality garnishes which create an experience more than simple "a cocktail" The circulators of management checking to ensure you are having a great experience was also a nice touch. A small detail that is often overlooked post-Covid! If you haven't been....go. If you've been.... It's different than it was the first time I went - in a good way. I also saw that they are doing a charity event with Ronald McDonald House coming up which was the icing on the cake for me. Great food. Great service. Great detail. Great space. If I could give a 3.5 I would. The food was good but the overall experience was not the most enjoyable. We went to scarlet knife for valentine's day. My boyfriend made reservations for 8pm and we were hard pressed to get there on time. When we arrived, there was a long line to be seen by the hostess and we ended up waiting around 10 minutes before talking to anyone. We were then told to go sit at the bar to wait to be seated... which would've normally been fine but (1) we had a reservation, (2) the bar was full, (3) we were told it would be a 10-15 minute wait. We didn't actually get seated until around 8:30 and I could tell my boyfriend was a bit upset because he'd planned a special night for us that was seemingly going awry. The hostess was also not very warm or friendly. I assume she'd been dealing with upset customers all night but still, it makes sense people would be upset about not being seated on time for a reservation. We also tried our best to remain positive and keep smiles on our face since we know that the staff most likely had a hectic night. Once we were seated, the night improved a bit. Our waitress was super sweet and helpful all night, definitely imrover my rating of the service. Our glasses were always kept full by nearby servers and the food came out in quick succession. Since it was Valentine's day we were given a prefix menu (there was no way to opt out of this which was a bit sad because my bf had been looking at their regular menu when booking). The food was yummy though. I got a caesar salad, short rib, and a strawberry dessert. My boyfriend got bisque, fish and risotto, and a peanut butter dessert. The starters were underwhelming. They had a great herb butter that comes out with bread though. Our main courses were tasty. Both of us agreed the fish and risotto dish was phenomenal. The short rib was good but not anything extradorinary. Our desserts were really good and a nice portion as well. Overall the food there was a 7/10, but for $200 I felt that it could've been a bit more impressive. The ambiance of the main room was beautiful and there was live music. Unfortunately, they placed couples in a room off to the side that was a bit lackluster. I started to write a lengthy review but I'll summarize it as: - Horrendous front of the house service (which I blame management for, not individuals) - Very long waits from seating to eating - Overpriced food and inaccurate descriptions - Drinks were great--kudos bartender! However...the past two times I've been has been extremely disappointing, especially since we brought friends along and it was a huge let down. The service was VERY slow and unorganized. The first time during brunch it took an hour for us to get our drink orders and then a half hour to get our drinks brought out to us. The food was great but service was not. Last night we went for the Valentine's Day special and you would think that since it was a prefix menu, they would be prepared and well staffed.... Nope. Again service was terrible. Our waters were never refilled and it took a long time to get our first drink. What about the second drink you ask? Well there wasn't one because we weren't asked. Not sure what's happening with the staff/service for this place but after a second time experiencing poor service, we will not be back for a while to dine in. I have waited almost a month to write this review, mostly because my experience at this restaurant was not good in any way! The atmosphere is corporate and not friendly at all. The surroundings amplify the background noise, which becomes intrusive to any quiet conversation. Except for the steak that my wife ordered the food was no better than what you get at a third rate restaurant: my Cezar salad was not fresh and tasted like a green salad, the bun on my burger was cold and the 'caramelized' onions were deep fried! My wife's vegetables were old and probably just heated in the microwave just before serving. Overall, our meals were subpar, but very over priced! read more

The execution of each dish is perfection and the flavors are exceptional. For brunch I always start off with the pastry basket which comes with a mix of warm pastries to share. The crème brûlée french toast, truffle croque madame and the lobster scramble are delicious. For dinner, I enjoyed the French onion short rib (my favorite) and ribeye. Attention Kmart shoppers!!! A new modern farm to table restaurant just opened 3 weeks ago in the 12189, actually in the former Latham Kmart, left end where the Garden Center was. There are no Kmarts open anymore in the area. The place has a modern atmosphere with nice overhanging bar lights, table seating, booths, bar seating, wine rack glass wall, and seating up at the chef's table with a great view of the action in the kitchen. There is an outside garden patio with fireplace. They will have a dessert room too. They also have live music in the bar area, usually on Friday-Saturday evenings. I made an online reservation for a later seating around 8pm since I had a lot of things to do. I was seated at a nice table next to the Christmas tree and given a dinner menu and drinks, cocktails, and wine menu. My server Lee arrived promptly and went over the "Blue Light" Specials (without the blue light) such as the Lamb and Swordfish. The dinner menu offers small plates, large plates, salads, and soups. Some plates offered here change often may include French Roast Chicken, NY Strip Steak, Gnocchi, Crispy Seared Striped Sea Bass, Braised Short Rib, Charcuterie Board, Cheese Board, Beef Carpaccio, Oysters, Flatbread, and others. The desserts here are house made by their pastry chef. I ordered 2 Small Plates including the Chorizo Shrimp ($18 plus tax,) and Raviolo ($18 plus tax). Both small plates were nicely presented and very tasty. The 4 shrimp were very firm and the dish had a good mild spicy flavor, seared Ecuadorian pinks, house made chorizo, smoked paprika garlic broth, arugula, toasted crusty bread. The Raviolo was a fresh pasta pouch filled with house made ricotta & fresh yolk, with jumbo lump crab, asiago cream, crispy leeks on the outside. I saved room for dessert, but 2 of the items were already sold out including the Campfire Song ($16 - Chocolate sablé tart, southern pecan filling, salted bourbon caramel, dark chocolate, brown butter ice cream) and The Violet B ($20 - Almond Daquoise, huckleberry jam filled cream cheese mousse, meringue, almond ice cream, candied almonds). I decided on the Apple Brioche Pudding ($16 plus tax) which was enough for two people, two soft thick pieces sweet apple cinnamon brioche bread, custard, apple jam, brie, candied pecans, and whipped cream. I was also given 2 complementary macarons. The check was brought over as I finished and it was $56.16 with tax and before tip. Overall, this was a great meal, just enough food so I didn't need to go boxes. I saw some of the large plates at the next table and the portion sizes were good. The service was professional by my server and Chef Josh came out to say hello to customers. As I mentioned, the menu changes often, so I would definitely return here with my family. As others have mentioned online, the food here is priced on the higher side for the area, which makes this place the most expensive eatery in the Watervliet, NY zip code and is actually similar to Saratoga Springs and Downtown Boston prices. I will say, you get what you pay for here for a fine dining experience in a non-pretentious casual modern atmosphere and using locally sourced ingredients. I can't wait for the dessert room which is great for people who want to just get dessert and after dinner drinks. Went for our Anniversary dinner. Caesar salad was bland but the rest of the food was good . Because it was our anniversary we wanted to go to the dessert room for the apple flambé . This is where it all went downhill . We waited and waited and waited . Finally asked another server if they could help us . A woman came over to take our order and then we waited too long yet again. The desert room needs an overhaul in service if you are going to offer that . I left hungry because I ordered lightly in order to save room for dessert . 200.00 still without dessert. Great Caesars Ghost - this place exceeded already lofty expectations. If I am being honest, the notion of a 5 start restaurant opened by a CIA graduate in a former KMart plaza was a tad perplexing, but once you get past the location - my god what culinary gifts await you. The service was 5* all day - our service, apologies as I didn't retain her name, she was awesome. Knew when to interject and counsel - amazing. The food - stop it a amongst the best we've had in the capital district. Every dish; presentation was wonderful and the flavors even better. If you are looking for a comprehensive wine list - they got it. They even have a dessert room!!! Seriously - I saw some folks in the past, including the Times Union tipped about prices, perhaps they have come down - but I didn't find the prices here any more than any other fantastic restaurant I've been too. In fact; I would counter, the meal was top level, any city, so for the price paid, I can argue it was a deal. Food was OK. Service was well below par. Sat at the bar. Had to ask for water. Had to ask for place settings (silverware) . Had to ask to take away our appetizer plates. Friday night anniversary dinner date. Made a reservation through open table for 630pm. Greeted by a nice open floor plan, open kitchen, huge empty bar and a guitarist playing nice dinner music. Seated right away in a nice big booth. They have a huge outdoor patio with umbrellas, a bar area and a huge fireplace. Service was good a little on the slower side however we were out for the night kid free so it was nice. Loved the drink selection, a lot of variety. However, my drink came with a paper straw which I was very turned off by, $10-15 for a drink that if you don't drink it fast enough your drink ends up with small paper particles in it. The apps were tasty and hot the spot after a long day. They came out with complimentary bread basket that had different types of bread. Dinner was the French onion short rib and I wish I could have eaten more of it but filled up on apps and drinks. The short rib was cooked perfectly fell right apart, mashed potatoes were buttery and oniony. They do have a dessert room, which was interesting. I get the concept but not for us. The overall experience was pleasant, food was on point. I'm just surprised more people weren't in the establishment. If you're in the area I would totally suggest trying this one!
