My daughter and I ordered from this establishment tonight, as I have a handful of times before, and everything was perfect except for the pizza. I'd ordered a C.O.B. pizza on the phone an hour prior. When it got delivered it was perfectly on time. Upon opening it, I realized it was a regular cheese pizza and immediately called the restaurant back, asking for what I had originally ordered. There was no real problem here at all until I called the store. The young girl on the phone as well as the owner proceeded to argue with me about what I had ordered. I'm not sure if the phone had broken up during the call or what, but their behavior was extremely unacceptable and aggressive. I even remember saying something like "sh** happens" and having a very nonchalant attitude on the phone. I hate to say the customer is always right, but I feel it was inappropriate how I was treated earlier tonight. I know what I said during my order, and really all I wanted was a genuine apology. I, however, have no clue how or why it turned into a competition of "who said what", but I did eventually receive the correct pizza, albeit extremely uncomfortably. Do better! read more

I was horribly disappointed. A friend who enjoys eating recommended it. I went at 5:30 on a Saturday night for their prime rib special and they ran out. It was a big birthday for me and I was hoping for a lovely evening. I expressed that to the waitress and asked once they told me they had no more prime rib (which my heart was set on )to make a simple compromise. She was lovely and no fault of her own the management was not willing to compromise. So, the first thing was partially my own fault. I've heard about this place and their COB pizza for like 2 years and finally decided to check it out. However, I thought that ALL their pizza was done in that style. I ordered a 6 cut with meatballs. I was surprised when I opened the box to see a round pizza. Figuring out that I had been mistaken I dove in. My God...that sauce. They should change their name from Red Front to Bullet Club because it was just too sweet. It essentially tasted like ketchup. Like, there was no spice to it or anything at all. Just sweetness with a hint of tomato flavor. I don't think I can even go back to try a COB pizza if that's what they're putting on it. My second issue was with the meatball topping. It tasted very bready. Lots of filler with little actual meat,and like the sauce, no seasoning. I suspect this place is another in the long line of Capital Region restaurants that people have fond memories about but just aren't very good. I've been going to this restaurant since childhood, 50+ years. I loved their COB pizza, no others like it anywhere. But after my most recent experience, never again. The place was disgustingly filthy. All tables (and chairs) were covered in crumbs and debris. Mind you this was shortly after opening on a Tuesday evening and no one else was in the place yet. Since they are closed on Sunday and Monday, this mess must have been left since at least Saturday. No one was making an effort to clean off the tables, they were even seating people without cleaning them off. The floors were so sticky you could feel your shoes sticking. We were bombarded with house flies and fruit flies. And to top things off there was no cheese under the sauce on our pizzas! I might have sent them back except for the fact that I could not wait to get out of there. And it's sad, but I'll never be back. read more

Being from Central New York, the famous Cheese on the Bottom (COB) pizza doesn't blow my mind. In fact, this was the pizza that I was raised on and the only type of pizza that I knew for many years. So when I moved to the greater Capital Region, I was a bit confused over the intrigue for this type of pie and have avoided it altogether for the past decade. After having a few drinks up the street, pizza was on my mind. On the recommendation of some friends, I settled on the Red Front. After a quick scroll through the reviews I decided to order a large COB with sausage on one side. I must say that I'm glad that I came back around on the COB pizza. Not only did the pie transport me back to my youth but reminded me of how comforting pizza can be. The sauce at the Red Front is sweet, there are no two ways about it. It reminds me of the type of sweetness that is found on the famous Tomato Pies in Utica. The bottom crust was thick and crisp. I was surprised that they chose to toss the toppings on top of the sauce, as I'm accustomed to everything truly being at the bottom. That certainly didn't take away from how good the pizza was and how great it was on the second day. I added an order of medium wings, which were pretty good but not great. There was a time that it was a no-brainer where I'd end up if I was looking for pizza in Troy. The pepperoni COB pizza - Thick, served on a sheet. 3 pepperonis in a row down the middle per slice. That makes 30 pepperonis per large pie. I'd actually rather not be able to do the math. I prefer my pepperoni scattered for optimal sausage-to-bite ratio. The tomato sauce on the pizza was sooo sweet. I ate a slice, took home the leftovers, and enjoyed it later with some jarred, briny Spanish olives. That REALLY balanced it out and I enjoyed it more this way than how it was served in the restaurant. The wings were tasty. They were bigger than your average wings. Honestly, I always get suspicious when the wings are that large. Anyway, the bleu cheese was extra garlicky and garlic is always a wonderful thing. $5 for three cute, little cannoli. Crusty crispy outside and a fresh, creamy, not overly sweet filling. Simple is best and this was the perfect way to complete a huge, classic tavern meal. The ambiance was warm - literally and figuratively. It's a sweet family place, a nice stop for a meal and a wonderful reason to get out of the cold. I hadn't been to Red Front in over 10 years and wanted to try it again because I always remembered the pizza being great. I placed a to go order by calling after visiting their website. I clicked "order online" and the page stated that Troy orders needed to be called in with a number listed below (see picture). So I called and placed the order. When I got to the Troy location they didn't have my order. That number listed was for Clifton Park. I had to wait 20 minutes for them to cook my order. Not horrible but annoying considering I called the number listed under "call Troy" on the website. We get home and the pizza is barely cooked. The dough was raw in the middle. Needless to say that if we want pizza in Troy again we will be going elsewhere, like Defazios! What a disappointment!!!! read more

We got the COB and have tried the garlic and mushroom toppings and have thoroughly enjoyed the pizza every time. The bread is chewy but with the perfect amount of crunch - so satisfying. I generally eat my pizza piping hot but I didn't this time because it was good without the heat! I can't imagine how much better it would be if I ate it at the restaurant! Not good, guys. Not. Good. Everything was clearly reheated frozen bulk-stock shit. It honestly freaked me out. To be fair, maybe my expectations were too high. This place has been around for a long time -- that's what the folks at the booth next to us were saying to the waitress -- and times are tough and if frozen meatballs make people happy, that's cool. But the frozen garlic bread bummed me out (it was still real real cold in the middle) and the $13 spaghetti was super blah. They'd do so so sooo much better if they just made their own food. I heard a lot of hype about Red Front and it did not live up to it. I ordered a cheese pizza and it was not very good. First off, there was hardly any cheese on the pizza and the sauce tasted weird. It was really sweet and I didn't like it. The crust was doughy and undercooked. Also the sodas were disgusting. So a quick story. My father lived in the Troy area about 30 years ago, and would come to Red Front with his mentor at the time. He fell in love with their pizza back then, for its spicy sauce and crispy underside. My husband, daughter and I ate dinner here the other night. I have had their pizza in the past as takeout (which was delicious) so we thought we'd give it a try. We started out with mozzarella sticks as an appetizer. Not bad, tasted like your normal frozen mozzarella sticks. We were delighted that they give raspberry melba sauce and marinara with them. I ordered the lasagna, my husband ordered a cesar salad, and french fries for our daughter. If you love cheese, and only cheese, you will love the lasagna. Personally, I thought it was lacking flavor, couldn't really tell there were noodles due to the amount of cheese and it was majorly lacking ricotta and meat. It was a huge piece, which I barely touched due to not really caring for it. Was disappointed that it did not come with a salad or bread. Just a big, over-cheesed piece of slop really. My husbands cesar salad was pretty undesirable as well. Lacked flavor, very little chicken, looked like it came from a cafeteria. My daughters french fries we're good, if you found one of the few crunchy fries. Most were soggy like they had sat in a to go container before being served to her. We will likely not go back to eat here. Perhaps takeout pizza but the chances of getting anything else are slim after that meal. Very disappointing. read more

A great hometown feel. It reminded me of my local pizza place from back home, actually. However, the pizza was sub-par. I'm from New Haven county in CT and we have the best pizza, so I am quite picky. I think the owners are Italian, but the pizza is Greek style. This was a bit of a disappointing experience, based on everything I had heard of this place. First and foremost, service was great. The waitress was friendly and prompt. Great. I had heard so much of their "cob" pizza, where the cheese is under the sauce. This is a lot like the Utica pizza places like O'Scugnizzo's. You would think the 6-cut pizza would be small, a "personal" pizza of sorts. It's a pretty decent size, though. Also great. What was not so great is the pizza itself. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't great. The sauce was a bit too sweet, and overall it just tasted a bit off. But we went for their fried chicken which they really need to put more marketing to it is crazy good!!!! We didn't want chain fast food fried chicken. This came up in local search. Troy, New York - how is it that this city has yet to develop some really solid restaurants? Been here off and on for over forty years, and the place is stuck in a time warp. Red Front, is another of so many Troy establishments that is stuck in that time warp. From the crazy entrance vestibule, where one door pushes in and the other pulls out. Certainly does not meet current fire code regulations to have two doors that operate in opposite directions as the egress from the building. This particular Saturday night, there were only a few customers in the place, but all seemed to be 'regulars' who were very familiar with the staff and the food. They seemed to be enjoying themselves. But overall it was a very quiet restaurant except for the one customer who thought he could yell across the place to his old pals. As for the food, this was our first time trying a COB (Cheese On the Bottom) pizza which apparently the Red Front is famous for. The waitress told us that it would be sweeter than a regular pizza, and she was absolutely correct. It turned out to be much sweeter, and very rich. Not my personal preference. The traditional pizza we got, in my opinion, was better tasting than the COB pizza, but everyone has their own preferences obviously. The toppings on the COB were light. A word of caution to new customers - the pizzas were much larger than we expected for the description of them and the price of them. In other words the prices are lower than what you would expect for pizzas of this size. Waitress was attentive. All-in-all it was an "OK" meal but we won't rush back. We will go on to another Troy establishment in our Don Quixote search for that perfect Troy restaurant. read more

This has got to be the best pizza place in Troy. Yea, sure, if its after midnight on a weekend,and you been drinking, then you go to I Loves, but if you want a nice sit down place for dinner, that has great pizza/Italian food, you come here. I been here a few times while going to rpi, and then went back recently (Jan 2010) , and it's still as good as I remember. The service is always nice. You might want to reserve if you are with a big group on a weekend. The pizza is so good here,I usually don't bother ordering anything else. I tried every type of pizza here. We always get the cob style (sauce on top, cheese on bottom). If you never had that you should definitely give it a try, its pretty good. We usually get one 10-cut for every 2 people. Depending on how hungry you are, that might be too little, so you might want to get some appetizers too. The crust is medium sized, soft, never burned (unlike some other pizza places I been too). We have lived in Troy for a good while, and drove/walked by the Red Front on numerous occasions simply to dismiss it because of its simple, straightforward appearances. Finally we went on a whim after walking around beautiful Downtown Troy whilst apartment hunting. I had heard that the then Mayoral candidate Lou Rosamilia was holding "Office hours" at the Red Front so I figured it had to be at least decent. We both ordered beers which were $6 a piece. For the surroundings and the neighborhood, I thought this price to be a bit on the exorbitant side. For our meal we ordered a straightforward house salad with peppercorn dressing. The salad was average, but the dressing was spectacular. They also poured it on to boot. Any establishment that satisfies my unusually high appreciation for ample salad dressing is good by me. Our main dish was the chicken parmigiana that was sufficiently breaded and covered in a tasty, sweet tomato sauce and a good amount of mozzarella cheese. The food just oozed the feel of homemade cooking. That, combined with the surroundings made for a comfortable, easy going experience. The bill totaled $36 including tip for 2 beers, the house salad and the chicken parmagiana. Would recommened for friends, and will definitely go back. read more

This Pizza is incredible. As recommended by a friend I ordered the cheese on the bottom pizza. Oh My Goodness it is incredible. I love the taste of the sauce on the top, although the cheese could have been a little more melted. I'm curious also to try it with other toppings but standing alone it was very good. I'd definitely recommend it. As a wing fanatic I obviously also had to order the hot wings. They were pretty good although not my favorite. I'd return for the pizza and probably not so much the wings. The blue cheese was really delicious though. I'm going to try the buffalo chicken pizza because the wing sauce they used was very good it was the texture that was a bit off for me. This place is dangerously close for my health. I also appreciate that they are open until 10 on a Sunday. Thats really rare for Troy and I absolutely appreciate it. This place reminds me of years growing up, going to the local family joints where my dad could have a beer and the family would have a good pizza. Pizza is good. I lived next to this place for 4 years and enjoyed the ambience. The same old woman posted at the bar drinking her martini was charming. However, on several occasions they just fail at everything else they do. I ordered a small take out order for my family and they forgot the soup for my mom--it was the only thing she was having for dinner. The woman who fixed the order was totally unapologetic about it. The eggplant sub used old eggplant. my last day in town I went there while I was moving out of my place, and it took over and hour. The family of three who was sat before us finished a meal and left before we got ours. The place clearly forgot to cook our food and still charged full price. Again, unapologetic about it. This is probably shame on me for giving them so many chances. Maybe I'm not used to some strange culture or bad service that red front exemplifies. Again, pizza is good. We were recommended this restaurant for great pizza. COB is cheese on the bottom. The crust wasn't too thick.I prefer a round pizza but this was really good. The sauce was borderline too sweet. It was a very simple tomato sauce, nothing really done to it. We had meatball on our pizza. The meatballs were crushed up and sprinkled all over, although a bit skimpy. However, the best part here was the wings and homemade blue cheese! These wings are a bit pricey, but omg they were amazing!! Big meaty wings, lightly breaded with a nice sauce that wasn't too spicy. The blue cheese was excellent!!! It had a nice flavor, possibly including garlic powder. I'll order these wings and sauce in a hearty beat!! I love this place! We go there once a week for the cob pizza (sliced sausage and red peppers), the stuffed shells, the chicken drummers, or chicken piccata. It's all so delicious! If you're lucky enough to catch them on a night where they have NE clam chowder, that is a favorite of ours too. It's a comfortable place with great food and has a good price point. Didn't expect to like it so much. Ordered because it was getting late and my options were limited. Ordered the chicken piccata with linguine and butter sauce for take out. In one container was two medium/small pieces of breaded chicken with butter sauce and capers. In another small box was linguine and red sauce. I didn't get why there was red sauce on my pasta when I ordered a dish with butter sauce. I expected either butter sauce on the pasta or no sauce at all and extra with the chicken. Even though they had different sauces, I decided to get out a plate and put the chicken ontop of the pasta. Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I like my chicken dishes like that unless the chicken is cut up smaller. So far not very impressed, everything changed once I started eating. The chicken was perfectly breaded and cooked just right. The tanginess of the capers blended perfectly with the dish. As soon as I tried the red sauce, I see why they probably serve it with everything. It was delicious. Not greasy or burnt like a lot of places. Pasta as cooked perfectly as well. maybe it wasn't what I was expecting at first, but it was just right. Way to go red front! The bottom of the chicken was slightly burned, which they covered up by drowning the dish in sauce (which is admittedly pretty good, although a bit spicy which is great for me, but not for those who have sensitive taste buds like my girlfriend.)
