DeFazio's has exploded in popularity in recent years because of rave reviews from pizza purists. It's critically acclaimed as not only one of the premier pizzerias in the Cap District, but some (me) say it's a top ranker across the country. And that ranking is well deserved. You get a strong familial feel walking into DeFazio's. If you're lucky enough to meet the Boss himself (he will actually be wearing a shirt that says "Boss"), he will give you a history lesson on the pizzeria, his family, and the state of pizz-ology Nationwide. He proudly proclaims that he is still The Sauce Guy around these parts because he has to keep up the quality control. There's something special about eating at a restaurant where the owner cares that much about the product, and they want you to as well. I encourage you to take the plunge and order the General Tso's pizza. It sounds insane, I know. But if you grew up eating this stuff, it will take you back to a time where you were traversing a mall food court and eating free samples (funny enough, that was the inspiration for this pizza). A lot of chicken-based pizzas will have red sauce as a base, but this is actually replaced with the Tso's special blend which has a beautiful sweet-heat to it. If you're coming here for the first time, it's nice to also balance a pizza like that out with a classic. Maybe a cheese or something similar. That way you can try out the red sauce and cheese in its purest form. I had the pleasure of walking through a cheese packing session that was going on in the restaurant, so I got to see that raw mozz up close, maybe 20 pounds of it. At that moment, I felt as though I was approaching enlightenment. When fully melted on that 'za, this cheese has the ideal mix of density and squish. DeFazio's has a special place in my heart. Your time here will make you feel like you are in a pizza sitcom. And you will leave with a feeling that you may have just had some of the best pizza of your life. read more

We were in the neighborhood.... Honest. We were a bit hungry, too. DeFazio's, one of the region's premiere pizza parlors was only a few blocks away. I haven't been to this original location on 4th St. in Troy for a few years. The family operation is nearly 100 years old. Remarkably, it's very much as I remember it. A tiny place with three tables. Some of the seating looks like repurposed church pews. The youthful staff, friendly as always. They were running into some delays as orders came pouring in just before dinnertime. They'd have to check to see if they could fit our order for a big pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, onions and peppers. They squeezed us in! Since the wait would be between 20-30 minutes we kept ourselves busy by checking out the desserts in the self serve refrigerator. I picked out a slice of "hangover" (alcohol) cake and I devoured it before our meal arrived. It was so delicious and naughty fun to eat our dessert before the meal. The pizza was fantastic when it arrived. I prefer crisp crusts-- this one was not-- but it was awesome just the same. My friend and I were so hungry that we consumed half of the pie before I realized that we hadn't photographed our delicious pizza. The remaining half was boxed and taken home to be enjoyed for a couple more days. The staff was so ready. They came to our table with the box and we settled up our bill. A lot to be said for tradition and quality. I've also visited DeFazio's in Albany, but I have yet to visit the relatively new restaurant up the block. I had a pepperoni pizza and the hangover cake. The pizza was delicious and so light and airy. I didn't feel too full afterwards. The hangover cake was really good and really rich. Every part of this place is different! Upstate NY's BEST PIZZA BY FAR. Italian bread crust, 75+ year house made sauce and cheese. Making everything from scratch, the sausage, sauce, dough, cheese, pasta, desserts, etc. this should be on the top of everyone's list of places to try. If I lived closer I'd come weekly! Haven't been here in years. Totally forgot my sister had gotten me a gift card for xmass, soon as I saw it I got excited for some pizza! We got the meat lovers, and the fresh mozzarella, which is a margarita style. The meat lovers was perfect.! very good Pizza. The margarita however, could've used more cheese and was very floppy almost wet. But still good.! The sauce was spot on! will be back sooner than later EDIT! I just realized I was overcharged! I ordered a fresh mozzarella specialty pizza, and the meat lovers specialty pizza, both 16 inch, how did my bill come out to $62 and change!? The total should have been $52.76! Food was good.Husband told server he likes a little spice but...Linguini with clam sauce was very very spicy as well as the greens & beans soup. There was a charge for the bread which we should have taken home. Only real complaint was the noise. Very loud but that seems to be the way it is lately everywhere. Hands-down, the best pizza in the Troy in Albany area. The place has been around for a long time. It's kind of a hard to find spot, but it's worth the search. I most certainly would recommend it to anybody in the area. I haven't been to the one that they did made as a "restaurant" so I'm not sure about their pizza but the actual pizza place in South Troy is probably the best in the area. I am unfamiliar with the Troy area, however I will travel when I'm told by many what a gem this establishment is. It is family owned and generational. My only mistake in my haste was not calling in or going online to place my order in advance. No matter, as I am happy to wait for delicious wood fire pizza made to order any day of the week. On this visit, I stopped in their local neighborhood just to try a large regular pie as well as a Fra Diavlo pie. Well, needless to say I was loving their cheese pie which was so simplistic yet made with wholesome ingredients and homemade sauce. Their Fra Diavlo had homemade Italian sausage, hot chopped peppers, cheese and sauce and was wow! I look forward to trying their pesto pie and eggplant Florentine pizza on my next drive over. In this instance, I really wish I had a second stomach hmm hmm.... This cozy yet quaint pizzeria has so much to offer. They have pizza and pasta and many other house made items. I have to admit that I was inspired to come here by the Dave Portnoy review, and it was definitely worth the drive. I ordered a fresh mozzarella pizza. The crust was crispy and left flour on my hands, as good crust should. The sauce was smooth perfection. The cheese slid right off of the pizza, but was delicious. The service was good, I received the pizza at a normal time. My only problem with the ambience was the size of the restaurant and the amount of seating. Overall, Defazio's Pizzeria was amazing, and I'm giving it 5 stars. read more

I came here for a lunch meeting. My client raved to me about the pizza here. Now honestly I hate rave reviews because then I expect something that maybe is just not the same thing someone else would expect. This place is definitely a Dive. It's a little hole in the wall place that appears to be family owned and operated in not a great part of town. The girls at the counter were cute and you can smell the wood fired pizza oven from outside. It's awful inside, unclean and unkept. The one person bathroom (closet conversion) didn't have a working light. You have to use the bathroom and find the soap and wash your hands in the pitch black. The pizza was decent, though it lacked seasoning. I was particularly impressed by the fresh sliced mushrooms. Most pizza places serve you water logged grossness from a can. On my way back from snowboarding I always try to make a pit stop to grab some grub and so I had to pull up to DeFazio's Pizza! Let me tell you.. Their Pizza is so delicious. Seriously.. I'm from NYC and I know good Pizza and I'm telling you this Pizza is off the hook! I ordered the 12" which was perfect for 2 people. Cheese to sauce ratio is perfect. Not too cheesy or too saucy.. The crust is nice with a little crispness.. All together you can't go wrong. The service was great. I mean it's a Pizza shop yall. You just sit down and order. The staff was very nice and accommodating though. As far as ambience, it's a small Pizza shop. Not many patrons other than the staff who works there. No loud music. No pizza by the slice! Food was good, pizza was artisan personal type brick oven. No crunch but the crust was good, toppings were decent overall. Tomatoes on top the arugula prosciutto wasn't my favorite. Service was a little slow and had some problems handling the 4 ppl I was with. One of the best meals I have had in far too long. The restaurant was great. Love the vibe. Good service. Great food. The Caesar salad was very good and we split it 3 ways and a whole other serving to bring home! It's huge lol! The pizza was what I expected and remembered. Very good! We also shared a pasta dish which was awesome. I tried the famous hangover pie. VERY rich but that is what I expected. I got it to go. It def needed that ice-cream with olive oil and to be split with other people haha! So make sure you order it and eat it at the restaurant and get the ice-cream! I will def get that next time but eat it at the restaurant. Don't get me wrong it was great and what I expected! All around good! My girlfriends and I only get together a few times a year and it was SO nice to have a great experience and a place that allowed us to take time and catch up (no we did not camp out all night we have all worked in the industry when we were younger) I can't wait to go with my family I know they will love it! Stopped while at the farmer's market for a slice of breakfast pizza. Loved that they had the option to pay through Paypal, because I forgot my wallet in the car. The slices are big. They have convection ovens to heat up your pie if you want to eat it immediately. I got the spinach and cheese. DeFazio's is absolutely amazing I ordered the 16' sausage pizza and it was an absolute beauty and was pretty big. The sausage was perfect, the sauce was delicious, the crust was good and for $21 I couldn't have had a better lunch. DeFazios delivers an "Old World Pizzeria" experience; making their sausage and all pizza ingredients in house. Dave Portnoys 8.2 pizza review and rating is extremely high if you follow Dave's Reviews. His recent review prolly has elevated the pizzeria into a national trajectory which already was in a local ascension in the greater Albeny area. My wife and I were blown away as DeFazios pizza is something you don't want to miss. Make no mistake, you should make a reservation as there is very limited interior dining space. Ordered DeFazio's for a pick up today. You have to order early, sometimes the day before. So called first thing for a 4pm pick up. The girl takes the order but doesn't ask my name, so I asked if she needed my name for the order and she said "oh yeah." Didn't think much of it at the time. I drive all the way out there to pick up all the food and get told "no we don't have your order." And they just stand there and stare at me like I am in the wrong. No apology, no "give us some time we will get it done for you." NOTHING! They offered no remorse, no "let's make this right." It was the worst customer service I have ever experienced. read more
