DeFazio's has exploded in popularity in recent years because of rave reviews from pizza purists. It's critically acclaimed as not only one of the premier pizzerias in the Cap District, but some (me) say it's a top ranker across the country. And that ranking is well deserved. You get a strong familial feel walking into DeFazio's. If you're lucky enough to meet the Boss himself (he will actually be wearing a shirt that says "Boss"), he will give you a history lesson on the pizzeria, his family, and the state of pizz-ology Nationwide. He proudly proclaims that he is still The Sauce Guy around these parts because he has to keep up the quality control. There's something special about eating at a restaurant where the owner cares that much about the product, and they want you to as well. I encourage you to take the plunge and order the General Tso's pizza. It sounds insane, I know. But if you grew up eating this stuff, it will take you back to a time where you were traversing a mall food court and eating free samples (funny enough, that was the inspiration for this pizza). A lot of chicken-based pizzas will have red sauce as a base, but this is actually replaced with the Tso's special blend which has a beautiful sweet-heat to it. If you're coming here for the first time, it's nice to also balance a pizza like that out with a classic. Maybe a cheese or something similar. That way you can try out the red sauce and cheese in its purest form. I had the pleasure of walking through a cheese packing session that was going on in the restaurant, so I got to see that raw mozz up close, maybe 20 pounds of it. At that moment, I felt as though I was approaching enlightenment. When fully melted on that 'za, this cheese has the ideal mix of density and squish. DeFazio's has a special place in my heart. Your time here will make you feel like you are in a pizza sitcom. And you will leave with a feeling that you may have just had some of the best pizza of your life. read more

We were in the neighborhood.... Honest. We were a bit hungry, too. DeFazio's, one of the region's premiere pizza parlors was only a few blocks away. I haven't been to this original location on 4th St. in Troy for a few years. The family operation is nearly 100 years old. Remarkably, it's very much as I remember it. A tiny place with three tables. Some of the seating looks like repurposed church pews. The youthful staff, friendly as always. They were running into some delays as orders came pouring in just before dinnertime. They'd have to check to see if they could fit our order for a big pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, onions and peppers. They squeezed us in! Since the wait would be between 20-30 minutes we kept ourselves busy by checking out the desserts in the self serve refrigerator. I picked out a slice of "hangover" (alcohol) cake and I devoured it before our meal arrived. It was so delicious and naughty fun to eat our dessert before the meal. The pizza was fantastic when it arrived. I prefer crisp crusts-- this one was not-- but it was awesome just the same. My friend and I were so hungry that we consumed half of the pie before I realized that we hadn't photographed our delicious pizza. The remaining half was boxed and taken home to be enjoyed for a couple more days. The staff was so ready. They came to our table with the box and we settled up our bill. A lot to be said for tradition and quality. I've also visited DeFazio's in Albany, but I have yet to visit the relatively new restaurant up the block. I have to admit that I was inspired to come here by the Dave Portnoy review, and it was definitely worth the drive. I ordered a fresh mozzarella pizza. The crust was crispy and left flour on my hands, as good crust should. The sauce was smooth perfection. The cheese slid right off of the pizza, but was delicious. The service was good, I received the pizza at a normal time. My only problem with the ambience was the size of the restaurant and the amount of seating. I am unfamiliar with the Troy area, however I will travel when I'm told by many what a gem this establishment is. It is family owned and generational. My only mistake in my haste was not calling in or going online to place my order in advance. No matter, as I am happy to wait for delicious wood fire pizza made to order any day of the week. On this visit, I stopped in their local neighborhood just to try a large regular pie as well as a Fra Diavlo pie. Well, needless to say I was loving their cheese pie which was so simplistic yet made with wholesome ingredients and homemade sauce. I came here for a lunch meeting. My client raved to me about the pizza here. Now honestly I hate rave reviews because then I expect something that maybe is just not the same thing someone else would expect. This place is definitely a Dive. It's a little hole in the wall place that appears to be family owned and operated in not a great part of town. The girls at the counter were cute and you can smell the wood fired pizza oven from outside. It's awful inside, unclean and unkept. The one person bathroom (closet conversion) didn't have a working light. You have to use the bathroom and find the soap and wash your hands in the pitch black. The pizza was decent, though it lacked seasoning. I was particularly impressed by the fresh sliced mushrooms. Most pizza places serve you water logged grossness from a can. I'm from NYC and I know good Pizza and I'm telling you this Pizza is off the hook! I ordered the 12" which was perfect for 2 people. Cheese to sauce ratio is perfect. Not too cheesy or too saucy.. The crust is nice with a little crispness.. All together you can't go wrong. The service was great. I mean it's a Pizza shop yall. You just sit down and order. His recent review prolly has elevated the pizzeria into a national trajectory which already was in a local ascension in the greater Albeny area. Ordered DeFazio's for a pick up today. You have to order early, sometimes the day before. So called first thing for a 4pm pick up. The girl takes the order but doesn't ask my name, so I asked if she needed my name for the order and she said "oh yeah." Didn't think much of it at the time. I drive all the way out there to pick up all the food and get told "no we don't have your order." And they just stand there and stare at me like I am in the wrong. When we got the drinks, they were served in goblet glasses just about a half a drink each and we were very disappointed as in a regular Italian or any restaurant the drink would've been twice the size for the price that was charged, but we took it for granted that maybe the dinner would be better We ordered. She ordered little neck clams with a white cream sauce on fettuccine and I ordered the fettuccine with a homemade Italian meatballs and marinara sauce When our dinners came my daughter got four little neck clams in a cream sauce with very little chopped up clams I received a dish of fettuccine with four tiny meatballs, Their homemade pork and beef. I must say that the meatballs were very tasty, but very small. We decided to go all the way since we were so disappointed with our experience and at this point we ordered a dessert which was a saving grace as my daughter loves cheesecake and they had this homemade cheesecake that was absolutely delicious. Found that the drink prices were very high for the drink the meal prices were out of proportion to the quantity of the meal that you got Service was average for the menu price, but the servers were very friendly. Awesome hidden gem in Troy. The staff was extremely friendly and the pizza came out piping hot. We ordered a large cheese with their speciality garlic and herb dough. The flavor in the pizza was awesome (and I like how they sprinkle herbs over it once it comes out of the oven), but not sure the specialty dough was worth the extra up-charge. I like my pizzas a little crisper - this pizza had a little flop to it, but I would definitely come back to try another one of their specialty pies. Ordered the following: Large cheese pizza with meatballs & sausage - red sauce and meatballs tasted so fresh and had great flavor. Meatballs are cut thin and sausage crumbled - so good! Small spinach and mushrooms - this pizza ended up being my favorite! The seasonings they used to sauté the mushrooms and spinach were garlicky and delicious and they give you a great amount of the veggies Small white clam pizza - was super intrigued and had to try! If you're a big seafood fan you have to order. Packs a lot of flavor. Mini cannolis - fill them for you right then and there! Authentic and fresh! I honestly don't know where to begin. First off, we're from Los Angeles and took a red-eye flight to fly into Newark. The first thing we wanted to do was drive 2.5 hours to get to DeFazio's! Yes, we came on behalf of Dave Portnoy's recommendation. And it did not disappoint! This really was one of my most memorable restaurant experiences. - Pizza was INCREDIBLE - Hangover Cake was out of the world!! So moist perfectly throughout the entire thing. - We were eating outside and came Rocco popping out to ask how it was. We were the only ones so we got to talk to him for a while and it was such a nice conversation. So funny and cool. He was even so nice to invite us in and give us a tour of the store and recommended the Italian Hangover. - Even got to meet Rocco's son and he was chill as well. Overall, yes. We stopped by on a Friday around 3 to order pizzas and we were told the next available pizza would be around 7/8 pm! Our schedule was not that flexible so we ended up leaving. While in the car, we saw that there was an option to order ahead for pick up so we scheduled a pickup for Saturday around noon. I was very excited to see that there were vegan pizza options since I am lactose intolerant. I ordered the Vegan Margarite Pizza which has Vegan Mozzarella, Tomato Sauce, Fresh Basil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Homemade Vegan Parm Cheese and OMG it was the best vegan pizza I've ever had. I was nervous that I accidentally ate a pizza with real cheese since it was so good. The crust was cooked perfectly and the sauce was delicious. Wish I lived closer so I could try other vegan pies! My bf ordered a cheese pizza and the Italian hangover cake (thanks for the recommendation Portnoy) and absolutely loved it! Next time I'm visiting RPI, I'll have to visit again read more
