Today, I could smell the fresh baking bread from way down the block and thought to myself I need to go in there again how do I pass that up? This place is really cool. Not from the area and needed to find pastries. I found this gem from their yelp reviews and also stuck with the recommendations. Almond croissant did not disappoint!!! It was AMAZING! Along with the Kouign Amann! I also purchased the chocolate cream filled pie cookie, another hit! I wish I lived closer but will definitely be back when passing through. Yum Yum Yum - every time we get anything from here, it is decadent and delicious - comforting even. Our kid loves baguettes and was so happy we brought her one. The Placid Baker is a gem in the Capital Region that I hope remains for a very long time. Today, I ordered a veggie quiche which I had outside. The crust was perfect. The Placid Baker was a bakery I knew I wanted to visit months before coming to Albany. What drew me was their pastries - very reminiscent of the pastries I see in all the patisserie windows in the Bay Area. Coming in, I felt that their selection was fairly limited, and the service seemed very curt and impolite. Regardless, I was intent on purchasing an almond croissant to share with my boyfie. My one gripe was that all the almond croissants looked very burnt. However, when we sampled our first bite, I was ecstatic to find a generous amount of almond frangipine sandwiched in between beautiful layers of lamination. While I wouldn't say this was the BEST almond croissant I've had, it definitely was a standout of all the food I tried while staying in Albany for a week-long trip. Overall, I wouldn't sleep on The Placid Baker, though I wish they had a greater selection of items to try. Perhaps add more sandwiches with housemade sourdough to the menu? read more

I wish I lived closer to the Placid Baker, so I could go there for my bread every week. Everything I've had from here has been delicious, their bread loaves, chicken salad sandwich, fresh flavorful pizza, and, of course, their star item the almond croissant. There is often a line, but it moves quickly as the staff is very efficient. The seating area is tiny, but I've never not gotten a spot when I wanted one. If I would own a bakery, I would die for the baker who makes that almond croissant. It was so not so sweet and crispy; I might dream about it tonight. This place isn't that big and I think they focus mainly on baking. I can tell they make pastry in the morning and bread later in the day. Ambiance is like a bakery factory and a decent place to sit. The biggest and probably the only thing that matters is the bakery part. We had the chocolate croissant and almond one. I might just come back to Troy for those. My one sadness about Albany is that the pastry scene is virtually non-existent. WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO GET MY CROISSANTS?! Luckily, The Placid Baker is here to save the day! Amazing treats! We came in from out of town, as usual looking up bakeries and cafes - The Placid Baker was a total win! We came for the Kouign Aman beauties - so tasty! Great balance of flakiness, sweetness and crunchiness! I love it. We got several other creations. Tried the butter crossaint right away - may very well be the best I had, and we usually get them anywhere we go, being from NYC and traveling coast to coast. I'm looking forward to try the other pastries we got as we get throughout our day in the area. Definitely recommend!!! I stopped in last weekend during the Troy Farmer's Market "just to look around," but when I saw homemade granola, I couldn't resist! It turned out to be some of the best I've ever had! It's incredibly tender, not-so-sweet, and speckled with pepitas, almonds, pecans, and raisins. It's perfect in its own but will also hold up well in your favorite yogurt. The Placid Baker has been around for about 13 years and maybe nine or ten years ago I tried a loaf of bread from them at the Troy Farmers Market. I never made it to their current location on Broadway, even though I had heard they made damn good macarons, until today. A group of us had decided to stop in for lunch on one of their "pizza Wednesday" events. Apparently, that is the only day they make large pans of pizza for sale at the Broadway location. Note: they do sell pizza slices on Saturday at the Farmers Market. There were four varieties of pizza available at $3/slice. 1. Cheese. 2. Roasted Red Pepper & Artichoke. 3. Caramelized Onion & Mushrooms. 4. Garlic Scapes, Tomato & Goat Cheese. While we were waiting for all of our group to arrive, staff advised that we should place our order quickly as there was a limited quantity of pizza and they might sell out soon to the incoming lunch patrons. Since the slices are good sized, we asked that they be sliced in thirds and we ordered three slices each of numbers 2, 3, & 4. This would allow each of the expected eight of us to sample all three varieties and still have room to try something sweet. The pizza dough is thick, but it is light and airy with a good flavor. It also has a nicely bronzed bottom that has a crispness. I can't be sure I had a favorite because I enjoyed the flavor profile of each. Maybe, just maybe, I'd lean a little more strongly for the wonderfully caramelized onions with the mushrooms. With room for dessert, we shared some almond croissants, macarons, and cream filled chocolate cookies. The croissants were buttery and flakey but a bit more over baked than I prefer. The almond filling was tasty, but the consistency was more fluid than I expected. Both the macarons and the chocolate cookie were real treats for me. The meringue shells of the macarons were light and airy, with just the right amount of texture to protect the filling and still offer some resistance as you bite into it. The chocolate cookie had the chewiness of a fresh fudge brownie with the delicious cream filling between the two cookie layers. There is no doubt that I need to return for the macarons and maybe try some other sweets. I suppose I could also consider trying a sandwich if it's not Wednesday. read more

Wow. What an amazing place! I went here on Tuesday with a friend who touted their turkey sandwich and the "best almond croissant in the world." Naturally, we had both at our visit and OH my goodness -- she was not exaggerating. The turkey sandwich (I had it grilled but you can get it cold) was perfectly balanced and the ingredients were great. Also, being a bakery, the bread was the star of the show in my mind, but it did not upstage any of the other ingredients. The almond croissant was out of this world. I almost don't want to dare speak of its deliciousness so it doesn't become a thing on tiktok or something... but I digress. It's amazing. You should just go try it. The owner, Tom (who is also the namesake of the famous turkey sandwich) was incredibly accommodating and patient and is one of the reasons I will definitely back!! read more

Finally made it here! The bacon egg and cheese croissant sandwich is fantastic: Smokey bacon, sharp cheese and super-silky egg with a little bit of nutmeg on a really excellent croissant. The Kouign-amann (my favorite pastry!) is similarly excellent. I'm really excited to come back soon and try out some more of what they have to offer, particularly some of those beautiful-looking fresh breads. read more

Is it me or has The Placid Baker gotten better? I came here to meet a friend for lunch. I had been in before, but only for specific treats. A baguette here. A croissant there. A macaron. Maybe two. A cold brewed iced coffee, to go. Amazingly, after all of these years, I finally came in for lunch. And it was terrific. My logic was that if I had a vegetarian meal that I could justify dessert, so I had the white bean, artichoke heart, and feta tartine. Honestly, I was expecting something a little bit different, since tartine is simply the fancy name for an open faced sandwich. What I got were a couple of delicious crostini on top of a salad. But it mattered little. It was delicious, and satisfying. More importantly, it left me room to have a pistachio financier. I fell in love with financier pastries on my first trip to Paris. These, I thought at the time, were the adult response to cupcakes. Small, decadent, and sweet. They have no need for icing or sprinkles. They are completely delicious just as they are. Leave the greasy kids stuff for the little ones. The Placid Baker version totally was able to scratch my itch. I do want to try a couple more sandwiches and some of the savory treats in the case before giving Placid Baker the fifth star. But if those savory corn muffins with the egg on top taste half as good as they look, it's going to an easy upgrade. read more

I came to check out the options for a light mid morning snack right before noon time. It is more of a bakery-cafe as a handful of tables are situated alongside its storefront for patio lovers and another handful of tables within. I was disappointed to see the items in the case including what seems like 2 types of macarons (very uneven in shape and did not have the prominent feet), some brownies, cookies, scones, cinnamon roll, and 4 kinds of croissants: chocolate, almond, plain, and ham/cheese. I went for the ham/cheese croissant ($3.25) and while the croissant itself was nicely layered and crisp, carrying a light buttery flavor, it only had a sliver of ham and melted cheese inside. It was tasty and lived up to my croissant expectations taste and texture wise, but I expected more filling to it for its price. The Placid Baker has daily lunch menus including quiches, sandwiches, and soups that might be worth trying. Good but not a great or impressive first time, but I have hopes they will have more of a selection next visit if there will be one. read more

Stopped by the booth at the farmer's market and grabbed a slice of artichoke/olive pizza, some kind of cheesy scone/biscuit thing, and a pastry with nutella as the main ingredient. I really wanted to love this place, since I'm still looking for a good bakery in the area, and it's very promising so far. Unfortunately, the pizza was cold and underwhelming in terms of flavor and texture. The biscuit was alright but kind of dry. The nutella pastry was the last thing we bit into and it was the saving grace. I am going to stick with the sweets here from now on because it was phenomenal in every way and not too sweet at all. I wanted to give 3 stars but the memory of this pastry is not letting me! Would definitely visit their actual storefront to try other things, and maybe have an actual meal with soup. High quality ingredients, small batch approach, and a seasonally focused menu make this place a gem. At first the prices seemed slightly high, but once I tasted the quality and craftsmanship, they seem spot on. The interior is small, very much a cafe style place. It has exposed wooden structures, open kitchen, staff in street clothes and not uniforms, and a small selection of imported and local products. The lunch menu is small, usually with two animal protein options and a vegetarian option. The options change based on market availability, so it's sad to realize your first love is no longer in rotation, FYI. The French macarons here are have a great crisp shell and a chewy interior. The filling has been consistently decadent and smooth. Occasionally I've gotten one or two with a slightly hollow shell, but I have yet to find better macarons in the States. The other pastries live up to their classic nature - croissants with a crispy and flakey exterior, but chewy and buttery on the inside. They have an ever changing assortments of cookies, biscuits, and muffins. Some of the savory biscuits have an egg on top, and if you ask, they'll warm it for you. Pricy, but you get what you pay for in a very French feeling place. Don't forget to look up - the lighting fixtures are worth seeing. read more
